• Tennessee is preparing to embark on its 102nd season of varsity basketball and its sixth season under head coach Bruce Pearl. • Located in Indianapolis, Ind., the University of Indianapolis is an NCAA Division II school that is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and has an enrollment of 5,240. Last year the Greyhounds recorded a 12-16 (6-12 GLVC) record. • The Greyhounds were tabbed by the Great Lakes Valley Conference head coaches to finish fifth in the GLVC East Division and are coached by a former pupil of Bruce Pearl (see Page 2). • Cameron Tatum and Indianapolis junior Cory Zackery both hail from Lithonia, Ga., and are friends. The pair often trains together during the off-season. Tatum attended Tucker High School, and Zackery attended Lithonia High School. • The Volunteers are 15-1 in exhibition games during the Pearl era, including a perfect 11-0 in Thompson-Boling Arena. The lone loss was a 103-98 setback against Pezinok BK in Bratislava, Slovakia, during UT’s summer tour of Europe in 2007. • In exhibition games under Pearl, Tennessee outscores its opponents 103.5 to 68.0 ppg for a scoring margin of +35.5 ppg. • The Vols’ roster features 10 returning lettermen and five scholarship newcomers. Returning starters are junior guard Scotty Hopson and senior center Brian Williams. • Tennessee was picked by the media to finish fourth in the SEC Eastern Division. Florida was picked to win the East (and the overall league title), while Mississippi State was the media’s preseason pick to win the West. • The Vols’ top returning scorer, Scotty Hopson was named to the media’s preseason All-SEC first team and was a second-team selection on the SEC head coaches’ preseason All-SEC team.

Tennessee Trends • Tennessee has an all-time record of 1,471-930-2 in 101 seasons of varsity basketball. • In all nine of his seasons as a Division I head coach, Bruce Pearl’s teams have won at least 10 games in conference play. • Bruce Pearl is 22-16 vs. ranked teams at UT. • UT is 71-6 (.922) when scoring 80 or more points under the direction of Bruce Pearl. • Tennessee is 55-4 (.932) during the Bruce Pearl era when it holds it opponents to 40 percent shooting or worse. Pearl To Face Standout Pupil For Second Time As a collegiate player at Southern Indiana under current UT head coach Bruce Pearl, Indianapolis head coach Stan Gouard (pronounced: jerr-ARD) was what Pearl later called “one of the greatest players and student-athletes I’ve ever coached.” ... Under Pearl’s tutelage, Gouard helped lead Southern Indiana to its first national championship in 1995 ... Gouard also led the Eagles to two Great Lakes Valley championships, and was twice named the NABC Division II National Player of the Year ... He also was recognized as the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Most Outstanding Player and the CBS/ Chevrolet MVP of the Division II title game in 1994 ... Veteran’s Day Important To The Vols With the Vols’ regular-season opener against Chattanooga taking place the day after Veteran’s Day, here’s a look at a few members of the Tennessee basketball family whose immediate family members have served in the military: • John Fields: His parents, Bailey (major sergeant) and Regina, both serve in the Army. John’s sister, Mraquita, also is currently serving in the Army. • Jordan McRae: His sister, Kristen, serves in the Air Force and is currently stationed in Japan. • Brian Williams: His father, William Williams (deceased), served in the Navy. • Associate Head Coach Tony Jones: His father, Clarence “Sonny J” Jones (deceased), served in the Army during World War II. • Director of Basketball Ops Ken Johnson: His brother, Craig Johnson, served in the Air Force.

Pearl Predicts Physicality Vols head coach Bruce Pearl has mentioned multiple times this preseason that this is his most physical team at Tennessee ... According to senior guard Josh Bone: “We put a big emphasis on being more physical this year. Defense will be a big key to how far we go. Judging by our early workouts, we’re going to apply a lot of ball pressure on every position on the floor. It’s not going to be easy for our opponents. Guard JaJuan Smith (2005-08) was drafted in the sixth round (94th overall) by the Maine Red Claws, the affiliate of the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats ... Point guard Bobby Maze joins Lofton on the Energy roster, as Maze was picked in the seventh round (102nd overall) ... Full-Time Coaching Staff Intact For Fifth Straight Season Bruce Pearl’s full-time coaching staff, which includes associate head coach Tony Jones and assistants Steve Forbes and Jason Shay, is in its fifth season completely intact ... The group has never failed to lead the Vols to 20 wins or a berth in the NCAA Tournament ... Director of Basketball Operations Ken Johnson is in his sixth season on staff ... Mark Pancratz, who played for Pearl at UW-Milwaukee, is in his fifth season at UT and his second in the role of “assistant to the head coach” ... Fields, who played his first two collegiate seasons at East Carolina, ranks second on ECU’s career blocks list with 104 ... Last year at UNCW, he set a school record for blocks in a season with 59 ... The UT single-game record is six blocks (accomplished five times by four Vols), while C.J. Vols Must Wait For Maymon’s Debut Sophomore forward Jeronne Maymon (pronounced: jur-ON MAY-min) transferred to UT from Marquette during the holiday break last season ... To fulfill the NCAA’s transfer residency requirements, the 6-7, 258-pound Maymon has to wait until Fall 2010 semester grades have been posted before he can take the court with the Vols ... Vols Part Of Loaded 2011 Maui Field The Vols will make their second appearance at the EA Sports Maui Invitational next season ... By placing the arc on the court, officials, players and coaches will have a visual aid to determine the proper positioning by a defender to draw a charge ... Concussion Prevention A Focus In Hoops, Too The NCAA this season is strengthening the penalties for elbow contact above the shoulders ... Officials will assess either an intentional or flagrant foul on a player who swings an elbow and makes contact with an opponent above the shoulders ... If the foul is deemed to be intentional, the team whose player was struck would receive two free throws and possession of the ball ... If the foul is deemed to be flagrant, the player who threw the elbow would be ejected ... Previously, such contact called for as little as a common foul or as much as a flagrant foul to be assessed.

Legends In The Rafters Four Tennessee basketball legends are memorialized with banners in the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters ... The UT men’s basketball program had never retired a jersey prior to the 2006-07 season, but after nearly 100 years of hardwood history, Bernard King (1975-77) was the first player to earn that distinguished honor ... King’s No. 53 jersey was officially retired during a halftime ceremony at the Feb. 13, 2007, home game against Kentucky (UT won 89-85) ... During that same ceremony, banners honoring longtime head coach Ray Mears (1962-77) and beloved radio “Voice of the Vols” John Ward (1964-99) also were unveiled ... Noting Bone • Played the final four minutes of UT’s exhibition win over Brevard and suffered a fractured left wrist when he landed hard on the court following a drive to the basket. • UT’s medical staff believes Bone will miss at least eight weeks because of the injury. • Had been limited in practice during the last two weeks in October as he dealt with a strained quad. • His solid play last season was rewarded with a scholarship this past summer. • One of Tennessee’s fiercest and most physical backcourt defenders. • Could see minutes at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots (primarily at No. 2). • Played 146 minutes last season (9.7 mpg) with just two turnovers. • Is currently on track to graduate with a degree in Psychology by the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year.

Noting Williams • Posted a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) with three blocks while playing 22 minutes off the bench in UT’s exhibition win over Brevard. • Is in the best shape of his life after working with a noted “big man” trainer in California during the offseason (Frank Matrisciano, who has also trained Blake Griffin and Patrick Patterson). • His high basketball IQ and understanding of the Vols’ system has enabled him to act like a coach on the floor and help his teammates with positioning. • Going against newcomer John Fields, who is a great defender and shotblocker, in practice has helped him become a better finisher around the basket. • Has great feet for a big man, particularly on the perimeter in ball-screen defense. • Started UT’s final 11 games (eight wins) at center last year. • His 10.3 rebounds per game in the 2010 NCAA Tournament led the team. • Is currently on track to graduate with a degree in Communication studies by the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year.

Swiperboy Has gained popularity as a hip-hop artist who goes by the name Swiperboy ... Released a new track titled “Orange and White” on Friday night ... Has released multiple free mixtapes and also produced a song about former UT football player and Heisman Trophy candidate Eric Berry ... The athletic department’s broadcasting department filmed a music video for that song that was played at Neyland Stadium before football games and also has been viewed more than 310,000 times on the Internet ... He produces all of his own songs in his dorm room using a laptop computer, microphone and keyboard.
