• Tennessee is embarked on its 103rd season of varsity basketball and its first under head coach Cuonzo Martin (pronounced KAHN-zo). • After dispatching UNC Greensboro 92-63 on Friday, Nov. 11, the Vols have now won 20 straight season-openers. • ULM suffered a 60-38 loss at Ole Miss Friday in its season-opener and then dropped a 71-59 contest to Indiana State Monday. The Warhawks are averaging 48.5 points per game while giving up 65.5. ULM is shooting .330 from the field and .353 from 3-point range. • Sophomore point guard Trae Golden was named the SEC Player of the Week (Nov. 7-13) after setting career-highs for points (29), rebounds (6), assists (9), field goals made and attempted (10-14) and 3-pointers made and attempted (5-9) in UT’s win over UNC Greensboro Friday. • Senior forward Renaldo Woolridge totaled 11 points, eight rebounds and one steal in 26 minutes off the bench Friday. It was his first double-digit scoring performance since posting a career-high 14 points in Tennessee’s upset of top-ranked Kansas Jan. 10, 2010, in Knoxville. • The Big Orange shot .646 (31-48) in Friday’s opener. That’s Tennessee’s best single-game percentage since Nov. 20, 2007, when it shot .649 (37-57) in a win over Middle Tennessee. • Tennessee landed at No. 30 in Monday’s Sagarin Ratings; that’s third-best among SEC teams. • The Vols depart for Maui Thursday morning to compete in the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Championship Round Nov. 21-23 at the Lahaina Civic Center. Tennessee faces Duke Monday. • The Vols’ roster features five returning lettermen and five scholarship newcomers. Senior guard Cameron Tatum is Tennessee’s lone returning starter. • This is Tennessee’s 25th season of basketball in Thompson-Boling Arena. Over the previous 24 years, the riverfront facility has hosted more than 6.2 million fans for men’s basketball games, and the Volunteers have posted a 281-100 (.738) regular-season home record.
2011-12 TENNESSEE BASKETBALL Tennessee Trends • The Vols totaled 21 assists on 31 made field goals during Friday’s win. • Tennessee made as many free throws Friday (15) as UNC Greensboro attempted. • A total of 14 Vols played in Friday’s seasonopener, and nine different Vols scored in the win. • Yemi Makanjuola, Josh Richardson (3 points), Galen Campbell, Wes Washpun (2 points), Rob Murphy, Brandon Lopez and Dwight Miller all made their Tennessee debuts Friday. • Through Nov. 14, the Vols lead the SEC in fieldgoal percentage (.646) and 3-point percentage (.625). Noting ULM In head coach Keith Richard’s first season in Monroe last year, the Warhawks posted a 7-24 (2-14 Sun Belt) record while battling scholarship reductions due to poor APR history ... ULM enters 2011-12 with yet another APR-induced scholarship loss (for a total reduction of three) as well as a postseason ban ... Richard returns nine veterans, including starters in 6-2 senior guard Fred Brown (13.8 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.7 apg) and 6-3 senior wing Hugh Mingo (9.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg) ... Two sophomore guards who were in the regular rotation as freshmen last year are 6-2 R.J. McCray (3.0 ppg, 0.9 rpg) and 6-1 Marcelis Hansberry (3.9 ppg, 1.3 rpg) … Transfer Charles Winborne figures to be another guard who could play significant minutes this season; Winborne appeared in seven games as a freshman at Loyola-Chicago last season … While ULM boasts a bevy of backcourt players, the returning regulars in the frontcourt are Fabio Ribeiro (3.3 ppg, 2.5 rpg), a 6-10, 245-pound senior, and 6-7, 237- pound sophomore Steven McClellen (5.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg) … Richard looks for his team to take better care of the basketball this season, as the Warhawks had 311 assists and 441 turnovers in 2010-11.

Golden Earns First Career SEC POW Award Entering this season, sophomore point guard Trae Golden had just one collegiate start to his credit, and he had never scored more than eight points in 31 career games played ... After one game this year, Golden was named SEC Player of the Week following a 29-point, six-rebound, nine-assist effort in UT’s 92-63 win over UNC Greensboro ... Golden shot 10-of-14 from the floor and was 5-of-9 from 3-point range ... He also made 4-of-5 free-throw attempts and added two steals and a block in 27 minutes ... Friday’s opener marked the first career start for both Maymon and McRae, and it was Golden’s second career start. What’s The Rotation? 2011-12 TENNESSEE BASKETBALL Thompson-Boling Arena Turns 25-Years-Old The 2011-12 campaign marks Tennessee’s 25th season of basketball in Thompson-Boling Arena ... To commemorate the anniversary, the Volunteers have highlighted great moments in TBA history on this year’s tickets ... Promotions at UT home games will look back on the great players and plays in the facility’s history ... The Vols are 281-100 (.738) alltime in Thompson-Boling Arena, and the venue has hosted 71 men’s games for which the attendance exceeded 20,000 ... In total, TBA has hosted more than 6.2 million fans for UT men’s games. Friendly Confines In 2010, Martin’s Missouri State team tied Kansas for the national Division I lead in home wins with 19 ... And MSU’s average home attendance increased more than 1,350 fans per game during Martin’s tenure there ... Those figures make for a tremendously exciting outlook of what his teams could accomplish in the friendly (and rabid) confines of Thompson-Boling Arena (21,678 capacity). Openers Bring Big Crowds In 25 season-openers at Thompson-Boling Arena, the average attendance has been 17,196 ... The 2011-12 opener against UNC Greensboro last Friday drew a crowd of 17,483 to Rocky Top and was Tennessee’s 20th straight season-opening win. Grand Accomplishment Fifth-year senior Cameron Tatum is 187 points shy of becoming the 44th member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club ... Entering this season, the 6-7 guard from Lithonia, Ga., averaged 7.8 ppg in 104 career games as a Vol. Tatum Ascending Tennessee’s Games Played List In addition to his approach toward 1,000 career points, senior Cameron Tatum also is rapidly ascending Tennessee’s all-time games played list ... Tatum has seen action in 105 contests during his career ... He’ll break into UT’s all-time top 10 when he plays in his 126th career game, and should he appear in all 31 of Tennessee’s regular-season games this year, he’ll finish his career ranked second in Vols history with 135 games played.

Volunteers Boast The SEC’s Longest Active Streak Of NCAA Tournament Bids The Vols have the longest active NCAA Tournament streak in the Southeastern Conference, earning their sixth consecutive bid last season.
Summitt Recently Cleared After Wrist Injury Sophomore guard Tyler Summitt was cleared on Nov. 10 to return to full action after missing more than two months rehabbing a left wrist injury ... The Knoxville, Tenn., native underwent surgery Aug. 24, and senior associate athletic trainer Chad Newman kept Summitt in shape running steps, performing strength and flexibility exercises and doing limited dribbling and shooting work in recent weeks. Television Presence Strong Once Again Tennessee is scheduled to play 14 games on national television this season (on CBS and the ESPN family of networks) ... Another 15 contests will be telecast regionally on networks such as Fox Sports Net and the SEC Network ... That means 29 of Tennessee’s 31 regular-season game will be televised. Notes From The Weight Room Strength and conditioning coach Troy Wills on which Vols have made noticeable strides in the weight room: “Wes Washpun is one of the most athletic kids we’ve had in a while. He’s got a 41-inch vertical and recorded a time in the pro agility test that is comparable to a lot of the better defenders I’ve had an opportunity to work with in the past seven years.” ... “Trae Golden has put a concerted effort into his training, and the changes he’s made in his body and physical performance are evident. He’s lighter and stronger than he’s ever been, and he’s increased his vertical jump to higher than 35 inches, which is nearly three inches better than last year.” ... “Jeronne Maymon is by far our strongest player, with a bench press well over 300 pounds. Renaldo Woolridge is the most well-rounded athlete we have from a physical standpoint, being a top-three performer in every test. Specifically, he bench pressed 275 pounds, vertical jumps 38 inches and he ran the 3/4-court sprint in 3.03 seconds.”
Bring On The Best In keeping with recent tradition, Tennessee’s schedule once again ranks among the most difficult in the nation ... According to head coach Cuonzo Martin: “This is the type of schedule that players want to play.” ... Here are some numbers of note:

80 = The Tipping Point As a head coach, Cuonzo Martin’s teams are 12-0 when they score at least 80 points ... That’s not surprising given the emphasis Martin places on unrelenting defensive pressure, tenacity and technique. The Vols were presented with their official EA SPORTS Maui Invitational team surfboard during the Tennessee-Georgia football game at Neyland Stadium Oct. 8. Tennessee departs Thursday morning for Maui, where it faces Duke Monday.

STATISTICAL BREAKDOWN
Familiar Faces From Abroad Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin was handpicked by USA Basketball to serve as an assistant coach with the 2011 USA Men’s World University Games Team this past summer in Shenzen, China ... Several of the players who were members of that fifth-place squad will be taking the floor against Martin and the Vols this season ... Those players include: Ashton Gibbs (guard, Pittsburgh), JaMychal Green (forward, Alabama), John Jenkins (guard, Vanderbilt) and Darius Miller (guard, Kentucky) ... Prior to the team’s trip to China, it spent a week training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. During that time, Jenkins spoke highly of Martin’s coaching style ... “The way he coaches is very unique,” Jenkins said. “If you mess up, he will tell you what you did wrong and how to fix it. This helps us out a lot, and it’s been keeping us trying to get better because most coaches don’t do it that way. His style is unique and I like it a lot.” HUSTLE & HEART STATS
UTsports.com /// @Vol_Hoops Block Or Charge? The block-or-charge call in college basketball will be a little easier for officials to make during the 2011-12 season ... The NCAA instituted a semi-circle line which is 36 inches away from the center of the basket, much like the line on NBA courts ... The short version of the rule is that if a help defender has his feet on or inside the arc when contact is made, the call is a block; if the secondary defender is outside the line, it’s a charge ... It’s still a subjective call because the offensive player cannot be out of control and the defensive player has to be in legal guarding position ... However, an offensive player heading to the goal and leading with a shoulder, a knee or an elbow will likely be called for a charge no matter where the defender’s feet are on the floor. High-Percentage Hall Junior forward Kenny Hall is Tennessee’s leading returner in terms of field-goal percentage from last season, having converted on 19 of 36 attempts from the floor (.528) ... Hall led the team in fieldgoal percentage as a freshman in 2009-10, shooting .578 (52 of 90) from the field—and .617 (29 of 47) in regular-season SEC play ... Hall shoots .566 for his career (73 of 129) ... More than half (37 of 73, .507) of Hall’s career field goals have been dunks; that’s as “high-percentage” as it gets.

FR Guard • 6-3 • 193 Knoxville, Tenn. • Fulton HS
SEASON HIGHS
• Quick, left-handed guard saw action late in the Vols’ season-opening win over UNC Greensboro (11/11/11). • His father, Richard, played basketball at Middle Tennessee (shooting guard), and his mother, Beverly, played basketball at Oral Roberts (point guard). • One of his reasons for choosing to attend Tennessee as a preferred walk-on was the ability to remain close to his church. • Lives with fellow freshman Yemi Makanjuola and the pair is rumored to maintain the cleanest room in Gibbs Hall. • Scored 1,000 career points faster than any player in Fulton High School history. Fulton also produced Tennessee All-Americas and 1,000-point scorers Bill Justus (1967-69) and Ron Widby (1965-67). • Was a summer ball teammate of fellow Vols freshman Brandon Lopez for three years.

• Set numerous career-highs, highlighted by 29 points, in the season-opening win over UNC Greensboro (11/11/11), draining five 3-pointers, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out nine assists (second career start). • Coach Martin has been impressed with Golden’s ability to pressure the ball full-court on defense and looks for Golden to be one of the Vols’ primary backcourt scorers. • Had he met the required statistical minimums last season, he would have ranked third in the SEC in assist/ turnover ratio (2.2). • His career-high for minutes played entering this season was 28 against Missouri State last season; MSU was coached at the time by Cuonzo Martin. • One of four Georgia natives on Tennessee’s roster (joining Kenny Hall, Jordan McRae and Cameron Tatum). • Lives with fellow sophomore guard and former AAU teammate Jordan McRae.

Carson-Newman (Div. II) offered a scholarship, and Middle Tennessee showed interest as well. • Sporting a new look this season, as he grew a moustache late this summer. He got the inspiration after seeing a 1980s-era photo of his father, Doug, with a moustache (it’s worth noting that Cuonzo Martin had a moustache when he played at Purdue in the 1990s). • This is his second season on scholarship; he competed as a preferred walk-on in 2009-10.

SEASON/CAREER HIGHS
• Scored 11 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds vs. UNC Greensboro (11/11/11). • Averaged 3.5 points and 3.0 rebounds while playing 18.5 minutes per game during exhibition action. • Will graduate in May with a degree in Sociology. • Coach Martin has Woolridge focusing on interior post play, whereas Woolridge tended to float on the perimeter earlier in his career. • Saw limited playing time last season as he was hampered by nagging injuries. • His older brother, Zach, played basketball at Princeton (2005-08) and graduated with a degree in Operations Research & Financial Engineering. And his younger sister, Tiana, is a freshman volleyball player at Princeton. • His hip-hop persona, Swiperboy, is “verified” on Twitter (@Swiperboy). • The father-son duo of Orlando and Renaldo Woolridge is believed to be the only such duo in NCAA Division I history to each play against and defeat the No. 1-ranked team in the country.
