 2014 TOURNAMENT WELCOME Welcome to the great state of Tennessee and the 18th Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships! It is our pleasure to host you in Knoxville and treat you to some southern hospitality. Mercedes-Benz has been a strong supporter for our championship for 18 outstanding years and counting. I’d like to thank Sam and Ann Furrow, and Mercedes-Benz of Knoxville for their support. During each of our championships we have honored some wonderful women, both professional and amateur golfers, who have had amazing careers and were great examples to other female athletes. We have been lucky to hear stories of how golf has impacted their lives for the better. In addition, we all have been able to benefit from their valuable words of wisdom. This year will be no exception as we will have the pleasure of celebrating the accomplishments of Dottie Pepper and Jean St. Charles. Throughout the tournament’s history, we have competed on four different golf courses in Knoxville and have crowned some impressive champions along the way. Fall in East Tennessee is beautiful and the Cherokee Country Club is a spectacular venue. Best wishes and we hope you enjoy Big Orange Country! - Coach Pavón and the Lady Vols

TOURNAMENT HISTORY  Situated on the banks of the Tennessee river in west Knoxville, Cherokee Country Club is home to the 2013 Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships. Founded in 1907, Cherokee is Knoxville’s oldest and most prestigious golf course and country club. The course was originally designed by Donald Ross, in his time considered to be one of America’s outstanding golf course architects. The spacious clubhouse stands above the scenic Tennessee River, with a breathtaking view of the Great Smoky Mountains. Cherokee states that its goal is to offer golf at its finest and truly be an “exceptional golf experience” for all levels of players. From 2004-07, Cherokee Country Club also hosted the MercedesBenz Women’s Collegiate Championships. Cherokee has played host to events such as the U.S. Open Qualifier, the UT Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament and numerous other state amateur events. Yardage: 5,897 Par: 71 From 2010-2012, Holston Hills was home to the Mercedes-Benz Championship. Located in just east of Knoxville, the course was built in 1927 and began hosting important regional tournaments, including a PGA Tour Event. The challenging layout features more than one hundred bunkers scattered across the 150-acre property. There are little to no homes or other visual distractions taking away from the links-like feel. The course is situated on an old farm tucked into a bend in the Holston River. The course is arrayed in a broad, fanshaped formation, with both nines returning to the clubhouse that sits on an upslope along the north side of the property. Yardage: 6,447 Par: 72 From 2008-2009, Fox Den Country Club held one of the top collegiate tournaments in the country− the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships. Featuring an 18-hole championship golf course, the club provides an ideal setting to challenge premier golfers and teams from across the nation. Situated in nearby Farragut, Tenn., Fox Den opened in the summer of 1968, and is the result of one golfer’s (Chester A. Massey) enthusiasm for the game and his desire to build one of America’s finest golf courses. As the host of the Knoxville Open, a Nationwide Tour event, it boasts a course that requires finesse as well as long-ball power. Yardage: 7,100 Par: 72 From 1997-2002, the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships were held at the Gettysvue Polo, Golf and Country Club, located in West Knoxville, Tenn. Gettysvue is an exclusive $20 million community located on 300 rolling acres in the heart of Knoxville. The club features beautiful views of the Great Smoky and Cumberland Mountains. It is a difficult course that requires precise shot placement and good course management. It requires players to make shots from various lies and into multi-tiered greens. Yardage: 6,243 Par: 72

LADY VOL TRADITIONS NICKNAME The formation of the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department for the 1976-77 academic year prompted much discussion concerning a proper nickname for the distaff athletes. After long consideration and debate, it was decided the female student-athletes would be known as “Lady Volunteers” or “Lady Vols.” The University of Tennessee, as the state’s land grant university, draws the nickname of its athletic teams (Volunteers) from the name most associated with the state. Tennessee acquired the name “The Volunteer State” in the early days of the 19th century when General Andrew Jackson mustered large armies from his home state to fight the Indians and later the British at the Battle of New Orleans. The name became even more prominent in the Mexican War when Governor Aaron V. Brown issued a call for 2,800 men to battle Santa Ana, and some 30,000 volunteered. The name “Volunteers” or “Lady Volunteers” is frequently shortened to “Vols” or “Lady Vols” for the men’s and women’s athletic teams.

MASCOT The official mascot is Smokey, a rather pleasant blue tick coon hound that has been on the job since 1953. The dog is a native breed of Tennessee and is in a line of dogs used for hunting raccoons. The present Smokey, the ninth in a line of such canines provided by the family of the late Rev. W.C. Brooks of Knoxville, is appropriately called Smokey IX. Smokey was chosen as a result of the 1953 Pep Club contest to select a mascot. At Lady Vol events, a human version of Smokey accompanies the cheerleaders.

SCHOOL COLORS The colors Orange and White were selected by Charles Moore, a member of the first football team in 1891, and were later approved by a vote of the student body. The colors were those of the common American daisy which grew in profusion on “The Hill.”

LEGENDS OF WOMEN'S GOLF On Oct. 17, Mercedes-Benz will present the Legends of Women’s Golf Award to an amateur golfer and a golfer from the professional ranks as well. The awards were created to recognize outstanding golf achievements and contributions to society by female golfers. The awards are given annually by Mercedes-Benz and presented at the Legends Banquet during the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships hosted by the University of Tennessee Athletics Department. The recipients, while choosing different career paths, are honored for being ambassadors for the game of golf as well as being outstanding role models for women collegiate golfers.

Dottie Pepper • Professional Recipient Dottie Pepper, a native of Saratoga Spring, N.Y., was a fierce competitor, not afraid to let her feelings show on the course. Her career began with amateur victories in New York, winning the 1981 state amateur and the 1981 and 1983 New York Junior Amateur titles. She was a member of the 1981 Junior World Cup team and low amateur at the 1984 U.S. Women’s Open. She attended Furman University where she was named All-America three times before turning pro to join the LPGA in 1987. She was inducted into the Furman University Hall of Fame in 1992. Her first victory came at the 1989 Oldsmobile LPGA Classic in a 5-hole playoff win over Beth Daniel. Pepper claimed the first of her two majors at the 1992 Nabisco Dinah Shore. She won the event again in 1999 with a record-setting 10-under par, still the lowest score in relation to par at any LPGA or PGA tour. Pepper was consistent throughout the 1990s, leading the tour in wins in 1992 and 1996. Pepper earned numerous awards throughout her career including the 1993 ESPY Award winner for Outstanding Women’s Golf Performer of the Year. Due to injuries, she retired following the 2004 season but has since then remained close to the sport. Pepper is an assistant captain for the Solheim Cup, having made six overall appearances with a 13-5-2 record. Her record is one of the best ever in U.S. Team History. During 1994 and 1995, she compiled a 10-1 recording during the three Solheim Cups during that stretch. Pepper currently works as a commentator for ESPN while also serving as a contributing writer for Sports Illustrated. - Bio courtesy of LPGA.com

Jean St. Charles • Amateur Recipient A member of the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame, Jean St. Charles didn’t have the typical golf upbringing. Involved with sports starting at a young age, she didn’t play golf until her 30s. Before a golf career, she received an Associate of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Chattanooga and then worked for UnumProvident Corporation for five years. It was on an evening that two members of the Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club asked if she would be interested in joining their club for a reasonable rate that she made the decision to join. For over 50 years, St. Charles has been involved with golf from being a player to an official. As a player, St. Charles is a four-time Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club’s Women’s Championships winner (’66, ’81, ’83, and ’86). She also won the 1967 Chattanooga Women’s Amateur Championship. Her most recent accomplishment was being a runner-up at the 1990 Tennessee Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. St. Charles is a member of nine different golf organizations, including the Tennessee Golf Association. Since ending her playing career, she has been a rules official for over 13 different championship events and has held a rules chairman position for many different events. Since 1990, St. Charles has devoted herself to women’s golf at both the high school, amateur and collegiate levels. - Bio courtesy of Jean St. Charles
