FIRST SERVE Saturday’s matchup against the Rebels marks the 52nd meeting all-time between the two programs. Tennessee owns a 43-8 advantage all-time in the series with a 22-2 edge when playing in Knoxville. Earlier in the season UT fell in three sets (26-24, 25-17, 25-16) in Starkville to MSU. The Big Orange has won 25 of its last 27 matches against the Rebels. Head coach Rob Patrick has a near-perfect 25-2 record vs. Mississippi State since taking over the program in 1997. Tennessee assistant coach Rachel Cooper is a former standout for the Bulldogs where she ranks third in the record books for MSU’s all-time career kills with 1,405. She also was the fi rst Bulldog to earn an SEC weekly honor.
HEERES, MULLINS TO BE HONORED Prior to the first serve of Saturday’s match, seniors Whitney Heeres and Ellen Mullins will be honored as the duo wraps up their careers at Tennessee. Heeres joined the Tennessee volleyball family in 2012 after transferring from Ball State University where she was a MAC All-Freshman honoree and received Second-Team All-Mid-American Conference accolades. Due to shoulder surgery, Heeres sat out the 2012 season. This year, Heeres ranks third on the team in kills per set, averaging 2.20, and in blocks with 58. She has played in all but one match. She has recorded double-digit kills in eight matches this year, including a career-best 14 kills at Ole Miss/ Heeres was named to the Comcast Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament Team after putting down 33 kills in four matches, while hitting at a .263 clip through the tournament, which included 13 kills against VCU where she hit .480 A standout also in the classroom, Heeres earned a perfect 4.0 GPA last spring and was named to the SEC’s Academic Honor Roll in 2012. She will graduate in December with a degree in Speech Pathology.
MULLINS LEAVES A LEGACY Heading into the final regular-season game, Mullins is four digs away from breaking her fifth Tennessee volleyball record this year, as she trails Chloe Goldman’s single-season digs record of 628. Mullins currently has 625 digs and already owns two other spots on the list as she tallied 541 in 2012 and 471 in 2011, marks that are fourth and sixth, respectively. With 11 digs against Florida on Nov. 20, the Nashville native broke Tennessee’s all-time career digs record, surpassing Chloe Goldman (1,755) as she had a then-career total of 1,756. Heading into the final match, the libero has 1,786 career scoops. The All-American standout is averaging 5.68 digs per set, a mark that puts her first currently on UT’s single-season digs per set chart. For her career, Mullins is averaging 4.19 digs per set, a number that places her second on the Big Orange’s career digs per set list.
