The Matchup
Tennessee is 6-0 all-time against the Buckeyes dating back to 1981 and a 73-40 dual-meet win in Knoxville. The Vols and Bucks spent the next five years in a home and home series with Tennessee taking each contest. The two have not squared off since 1986. n This is John Trembley’s first dual-meet against Ohio State. Trembley is 4-3 all-time against the teams that currently comprise the Big Ten Conference. n Two Vols hail from Ohio. Jake Epperson and Scott Friderichs are both Toledo natives. n The last time senior diver Mike Wright competed at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, he won the USA Diving 1M national title in February. With that win, Wright became the first African-American to win a USA diving national championship. n
Fast Off the Blocks
Kovacs Swims to Strong Start n Sophomore Norbert Kovacs leads the Vols through three dual-meets with five individual wins. The Budapest, Hungary, native won three events (500 free, 1000 free, 200 fly) in the Vols season-opening win against Louisville. He added two more wins (200 free, 100 fly) in UT’s triumph over SEC-East rival Kentucky.
Louisville, senior co-captain Michael Wright was named the SEC Diver of the Week (Oct. 25). Wright is no stranger to success. On Feb. 9, 2010, he became the first African-American to ever win a USA Diving national title when he won the one-meter at the Winter Nationals at Ohio State. His 396.00-point championship score was the previous school record. Vols Welcome Lots of Fresh Faces
Three Tennessee freshmen earned the first wins of their career in the Vols dominating win over the Kentucky Wildcats. Christoffer Wallin led UT freshmen at Kentucky with two individual wins (500 free, 200 fly), while Sam Petersen (1000 free) and Samuel Rairden (200 back) also notched their first career wins. Clint Johnson earned his first win the day before in the 50 free during the Vols win at Cumberlands.
Tennessee’s roster is bookended with 16 returning lettermen and 13 newcomers. Freshman Sam Petersen enjoyed a redshirt year of training and is now primed for competition. Meanwhile, mid-year enrollees Norbert Kovacs and Clint Johnson are also suiting up for the Orange and White. Kovacs swam for the Vols in February 2010 at the SEC Championships. The remaining 10-- Zack Burnett, Drew Craig, James Dail, Oystein Hetland, Renato Prono, Samuel Rairden, Troy Tillman, Christoffer Wallin and Alex Ward-- are all true freshmen.

Only Georgia’s Jack Bauerle can claim a longer tenure than Trembley with 28 years in Athens.
