Big Orange Slices First Time In Terre Haute, First Time At Nationals For Sheffey  Running in her 25th career collegiate race, Brittany Sheffey will be making her first NCAA Cross Country Championships appearance.  It will mark her first time running at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, as Tennessee last competed in the ISU Pre-Nationals Invitational and NCAA Championships as a team in 2006.

A Look At Sheffey’s Tennessee Cross Country Season & Career  Monday’s NCAA race will mark Brittany Sheffey’s final career cross country event.  She led Tennessee in all six races this season, posting victories at the 5K Tennessee Invitational (Sept. 17) and the 5K Crimson Classic (Oct. 15).  Sheffey also posted top-10 efforts at the NCAA South Regional (eighth on Nov. 12) and the Belmont-VU Opener (fourth on Sept. 2).  She is a three-time All-South (2011, 2009, 2008) and All-SEC honoree (2011, 2009, 2008).  In 24 career starts, Sheffey contributed to UT’s point total in all of them.  Her career bests include 20:39 for 6K (2009 Brooks Paul Short Run), 17:11.71 for 5K (2011 Crimson Classic) and 14:11.83 for 5K (2011 Belmont-VU Opener).

She Has Championship Experience On The Oval  Sheffey has plenty of NCAA experience during track season, competing in the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championship meets and the 2008 indoor meet.  She won NCAA titles with UT’s distance medley relay in both 2008 and 2010 and anchored the unit to eighth in 2011.  At the 2011 NCAA Outdoor meet, Sheffey was 12th in the 1500m.  In SEC action, Sheffey won the 2011 SEC Outdoor crown in the 1500m and was third in the 3000m.  Indoors last season, Sheffey was on the SEC record-setting distance medley relay unit and placed third in the 3000m behind teammates Jackie Areson and Liz Costello.  Sheffey also owns a 2008 SEC DMR crown and was a four-time league runner-up in 2010 in the indoor mile and 3000m, and outdoor 1500m and 5000m.

Lady Vol NCAA Meet Facts  This marks the eighth time in program history that Tennessee’s women will send an individual qualifier to a national championship meet.  UT has produced 10 women who have garned 13 All-America honors since 1980.  The most recent Lady Vol All-American was Sarah Bowman, who placed 36th in 2008.  The last top 30 finisher was Sharon Dickie in 2000 (29th) and the last to crack the top 10 was Patty Wiegand in 1990 (5th).

Repeat All-South Region Accolades For Sheffey, Bodary  Lady Vol senior Brittany Sheffey and Vol senior Chris Bodary each were repeat members of the All-South Region squad, finishing eighth and 12th in their respective races at the NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 12  Sheffey earned All-South Region distinction for the third time (2011, 2009, 2008), while Bodary reaped his second award in as many years.

At The Starting Line...

NCAA Championships  Brittany Sheffey and UT Director of Track & Field J.J. Clark will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., where Sheffey will run on Monday, Nov. 21, in the NCAA Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.  The men are scheduled to run a 10000m race at 12:08 p.m. ET, followed by the women in a 6000m battle at 12:58 p.m. ET.  A live webcast of the races will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. ET. A link to that webcast will be available on www.utladyvols.com.  Highlights from the championships will be included as part of the CBS NCAA Fall Seasonal Show, which is scheduled to air Dec. 25 from 1-2 p.m. ET on CBS HD. UT NCAA Championships History  This marks the eighth time in J.J. Clark’s 10 seasons at the helm of Lady Vol cross country that either a UT team or runner will be competing at the NCAA Championships.  That total of years with qualifiers by Clark is the most by any women’s coach in UT annals.  Tennessee will have either an individual or team in a national championship race for the 21st time in school history.  UT had no entries a year ago, but Jackie Areson and Katie Van Horn ran at NCAAs in 2009.

Tennessee’s Last Outing - The NCAA South Regional  With three of the Lady Vols’ expected top-five runners either not making the trip or not finishing the race due to injury, UT struggled to 13th out of 27 schools with 384 points.  Brittany Sheffey had her best placing ever at the NCAA South Regional, covering the 6K Harry Pritchett Running Park course in 20:46.2 to come in eighth on Nov. 12.  That time wasn’t far off Sheffey’s 6K career best of 20:39, registered in 2009 at the Brooks Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.  Sheffey led UT to the finish for the sixth time in 2011 and contributed to the Big Orange’s scoring tally for the 24th time in 24 career races.  The Vols, meanwhile, produced a 12th-place performance, tallying 341 points.  Chris Bodary did his usual thing, leading the Vols for the sixth time in as many races this season, crossing the line a career-best 12th at this meet in 31:30.2.  At 35th, Jake Rainey was UT’s second finisher, producing his second solid showing in a row with a time of 32:27.6.

Breaking Down The Big Orange Scoring Five  The Lady Vols had senior Brittany Sheffey (1-1-1-1-1-1) and freshman Amirah Johnson (5-4-5-5-5-4) finish in the UT scoring five in all six team meets in the places indicated.  Junior Kelsey Kane (3-5-4-4-6-3), senior Chanelle Price (X-2-X-2-3-2), freshman Amber Zimmerman (X-DNF-2-3-2-DNF), junior Ramzee Fondren (2-3-X-6-7-X), freshman Kacey Nobert (X-X-3-X-4-X) and junior Nijgia Snapp (X-DNF-6-7-X-5) also were contributors.  For the Vols, senior Chris Bodary (1-1-1-1-1-1), freshman Jeremy Dickie (2-4-5-4-5-5) and freshman Austin Whitelaw (5-2-3-2-3-3) were in the scoring five in all six meets.  Other top-five contributors toward the scoring total and their placing in meets one through six are: senior Tom Gilmartin (4-3-2-3-4-7), sophomore Stephen Derlath (6-6-6-57-4), sophomore Jake Rainey (3-X-4-9-2-2) and Daniel Tobin (10-5-7-6-6-6).

Rebounding From Injury  Brittany Sheffey, Kelsey Kane and Amber Zimmerman returned from injury to aid the Lady Vol cause this season.  Sheffey redshirted last season due to injury and bounced back to lead UT in all six races.  Kane has battled compartment syndrome and related surgery to move into UT’s scoring five this season in five of six outings. She ran third on the team for the Lady Vols in the Belmont-VU Opener, fifth at the Tennessee Invitational, fourth at the Brooks Paul Short Run, fourth at the Crimson Classic and third at the NCAA South Regional.  Amber Zimmerman battled back from injury in 2011 to run second or third for UT in three races.

Family Ties  Kelsey Kane is the daughter of former Lady Vol runner and cross country coach Missy Kane and the step-daughter of former UT volunteer pole vault coach Jim Bemiller.  Vol sophomore Daniel Tobin is the younger brother of Steve Tobin, who lettered in cross country at UT in 2005, 2007 and 2008, and was an All-SEC performer in 2007.  Vol freshman Jeremy Dickie is the younger brother of former Vol Bob Dickie (1993-97) and Lady Vol great Sharon Dickie (1998, 2000-02). Sharon was an All-American and fourtime All-SEC and All-South Region honoree. Bob, meanwhile, was All-SEC in 1994 and allregion in 1997. Sharon is married to former Vol multi-eventer Kevin Thompson (2000-03).

SEC Distinction For Sheffey And Whitelaw  For finishing 12th at the SEC meet for the third time in her career, Lady Vol senior Brittany Sheffey made the All-SEC Second Team for third occasion.  Vol Austin Whitelaw made the SEC All-Freshman Team as one of the league’s top seven rookie finishers.

Tennessee Makes Respectable Showings At SEC Meet  Running on their home course at Lambert Acres Golf Club, Tennessee placed fifth in the men’s 8000-meter race and seventh in the women’s 6000-meter affair at the SEC Championships on Oct. 31.  The UT men matched their preseason prediction by the league’s coaches, while the Lady Vols came in two spots higher than expected.  The Vols managed to nearly match last year’s fourth-place outing despite losing three of their top six runners from 2010 and counting three freshmen and a sophomore in the scoring total in 2011.  The Lady Vols bounced back from a disppointing 12th-place result during an injury-plagued 2010 campaign.  Brittany Sheffey (12th, 21:00.63) led the UT women for the fifth straight meet, while Chris Bodary (28th, 25:07.40) did the same for the Vols.  Six Vols and three Lady Vols carded personal-record times.

Sheffey Victorious, Bodary Second at Crimson Classic  Lady Vol senior Brittany Sheffey picked up her second individual victory of the season, winning the Crimson Classic in a careerbest 5K time of 17:11.71 on Oct. 15 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.  Sheffey now has scored in all 22 races as a Lady Vol and led the squad in all four races this season.  Vol senior Chris Bodary carded his third runner-up individual performance of the season, taking second in 25:01.59 at the 8K Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Oct. 15.  Bodary has paced UT in all four meets thus far in 2011 and has contributed to the scoring cause in 10 straight starts and on 16 occasions during his Vol career.  In the team standings, the Lady Vols placed third in the 25team women’s field, while the Vols were eighth of 21 men’s squads.  Lady Vol senior Chanelle Price was UT’s second finisher for the second time in two complete races in 2011, placing 19th overall in a PR of 18:12.83.  Freshman Austin Whitelaw was the Vols’ second finishing runner, winding up 33rd and counting toward the scoring total for the fourth time this season.

Tough Going At Brooks Paul Short Run  Brittany Sheffey (41st, 21:19) and Chris Bodary (90th, 25:28) once again led UT to the finish line, doing so at the Brooks Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa., on Sept. 30.  Rookie walk-on Kacey Nobert made her college debut, running third for the Lady Vols (189th, 22:56), while Amber Zimmerman made her first 2011 appearance, running second (172nd, 22:47).  Tennessee placed 32nd in the women’s 6K race and 37th in the men’s 8K competition.

Sheffey, Bodary Strong At Tennessee Invitational  Lady Vol senior Brittany Sheffey posted a victory in the 5K women’s race and Vol senior Chris Bodary was the runner-up in the men’s 8K affair at the Tennessee Invitational at Lambert Acres Golf Club on Sept. 17.

 Tennessee dropped dual meets to Kentucky, though, in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with UK defeating the UT men, 23-36, and the Wildcats claiming the women’s title, 26-33.  Sheffey posted her first collegiate victory, winning by nearly 30 seconds in 17:43.46 for the fifth-best 5K mark ever recorded by a Lady Vol on the home course.  Sheffey’s triumph was the seventh time a UT woman has won the Tennessee Invitational in 10 tries.  Bodary, meanwhile, posted his second-consecutive runner-up effort this season, covering the men’s 8K layout in 25:24.52 to finish behind Luis Orta of Kentucky once again as he did at the BelmontVU Opener.  Tennessee also got third-place finishes from rookie Austin Whitelaw (25:32.32) on the men’s side and from Chanelle Price (18:31.13) on the women’s side.

SEC Honors For Sheffey, Whitelaw For Efforts At Tennessee Inv.  For her victorious performance at the Tennessee Invitational, Lady Vol senior Brittany Sheffey was named SEC Co-Women’s Runner of the Week on Sept. 20  For his third-place overall finish at the Tennessee Invitational, Vol rookie Austin Whitelaw was chosen the SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week on Sept. 20.

As Expected, Bodary, Sheffey Blaze Trail In Belmont-VU Opener  Senior Chris Bodary posted the best finish of his career to begin the 2011 campaign. He carded a runner-up and career-best 5K time of 15:26.93 at the Belmont-VU Opener in Nashville.  Brittany Sheffey bounced back from a redshirt season with a strong 2011 debut. The senior from Bellport, N.Y., checked in fourth with a career-best 4K clocking of 14:11.83.  For the first time in their careers, Chris Bodary and Brittany Sheffey led Tennessee to the finish line.  The Vols managed a third-place team finish out of 11 teams with 84 points, sporting a one-through-five spread of 42.31 seconds. UT was second in the 2010 Belmont-VU Opener.  The Lady Vols, meanwhile, checked in fifth out of seven teams with 129 points after coming in seventh in 2010. The UT women’s one-through-five spread was 1:50.98 this time around.

Vols Projected Fifth, Lady Vols Ninth In SEC Coaches Poll  The Vols, who were fourth at the 2010 SEC Championships, were picked to finish fifth in the 2011 SEC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Lady Vols, 12th a year ago, are projected to wind up ninth this time around.

One Program, One Coach  The Tennessee men’s and women’s cross country teams are competing for the first time ever with one coach leading both programs.

After commanding the Lady Vols the past nine seasons, UT Director of Track & Field and Cross Country J.J. Clark has taken on the added responsibility of leading the men’s program in 2011. He replaced 16-year veteran George Watts, who was not retained following the 2010-11 school year.  Clark is in his third season as the director of the entire track program, but Watts had led the men’s cross country program during the first two years of that arrangement. As the women’s coach, Clark has guided the Lady Vols to four NCAA South Region titles, three SEC Championships and five NCAA Championships berths.

Cross Country Staff Changes  J.J. Clark hired Mary Jayne (Harrelson) Reeves as his assistant cross country/distance coach in August. The 2001 graduate of Appalachian State had previous coaching stops at Virginia and Virginia Tech and trained with Clark in Knoxville during part of her 10-year pro career.  Also joining Clark and Reeves is Daniel Goetz, a volunteer assistant. Goetz was an NAIA All-American while running for Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn.

2011 Vol Meet Recaps BELMONT-VU OPENER NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Chris Bodary led the Tennessee men to a third-place team finish, as the Vols popped the top on the 2011 season at the Belmont-VU Opener on Sept. 2.

Bodary, a senior from Downingtown, Pa., covered the 5000-meter Percy Warner Park men’s course in 15 minutes, 26.93 seconds to place second out of 100 runners. Only Kentucky’s Luis Orta prevented the UT standout from taking the individual title, navigating the layout in 15 minutes, 22.40 seconds to break the tape on a sweltering day in the Music City.

Kentucky took the men’s team crown with 62 points, followed by Belmont with 78 and then UT with 84. The Vols were second a year ago.

Freshman Jeremy Dickie, brother of former Vol Bob Dickie and former Lady Vol Sharon Dickie, posted a solid effort in his first collegiate meet. His 16:01.94 output placed him 17th. Sophomore Jake Rainey was the third UT scorer, placing 20th in 16:03.65.

Also counting toward Tennessee’s point total were senior Tom Gilmartin in 22nd at 16:06.45 and rookie Austin Whitelaw in 23rd at 16:09.24. Both Dickie and Whitelaw were state runner-up performers as preps in their native Michigan.

“Chris Bodary looked very good out there today,” UT Director of Track & Field and Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “He’s a talent; we knew that because he was an all-region performer for us last season. I thought he ran a very smart and even race, and it was a good way to start his senior year.

“As far as the rest of the guys, I thought they all had a good showing for this time of the year. We’ll build on it from here” TENNESSEE INVITATIONAL MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Vol Chris Bodary posted his second runner-up finish this season, as the Big Orange cross country team competed Sept. 17 in the Tennessee Invitational at Lambert Acres Golf Club.

Kentucky prevailed in the team race, winning the men’s 8000-meter competition with a score of 23 points to 36 for the UT men.

Bodary, a senior from Downingtown, Pa., was thwarted from winning a men’s individual crown for the second straight meet

by Kentucky’s Luis Orta, who prevailed in 25:07.34 on a course that will be used later this season for the SEC Championships. A runner-up to Orta at the Belmont-VU Opener on Sept. 2, Bodary grabbed second this time at the Tennessee Invitational in 25:24.52.

It wasn’t for a lack of effort, as Bodary and rookie teammate Austin Whitelaw joined Orta in setting the pace for the first three miles. Bodary and Whitelaw actually were running one-two through the two- and three-mile marks, at splits of 10:07 and 15:23, respectively, before Orta pushed the tempo, assumed the lead at the four-mile point and brought it on home for the triumph.

Whitelaw, who was UT’s fifth finisher two weekends ago, scored in the No. 2 slot in his second college meet, taking third overall in 25:32.32. Senior Tom Gilmartin and freshman Jeremy Dickie counted toward the Vol team total for the second time in 2011, with Gilmartin crossing the line ninth in 26:18.01 and Dickie coming home 10th in 26:23.83.

Sophomore Daniel Tobin bounced back from a tough race in the season-opener to score in the fifth position for Tennessee, placing 12th overall in 26:37.60. His performance helped UT post a one-through-five runner spread of one minute, 13.08 seconds.

Also competing but not counting toward the team scoring were sophomore Stephen Derlath in 14th (13th scorer) in 26:49.32, freshman J.R. Creekmore in 16th (14th) at 26:59.92 and sophomore Alex McCandless in 17th at 27:18.02.

“I thought Chris Bodary and Austin Whitelaw looked good for this time of the year,” UT Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “I think the men’s team is in a position to do well. That is something we are looking for and aiming to do. For us to get better and better as the season progresses is my objective.

“We have some room to grow, and we will. I just need to continue to see progression, and I did today. We’re just happy to be healthy and moving forward. We’ll insert people every week as time goes along, and we’ll see what happens.”

MARYVILLE, TENN. -- As he has done in every meet this season, Chris Bodary led the charge for Tennessee, his effort enabling the Big Orange men to place fifth at the SEC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 31 at Lambert Acres Golf Club.

The Vols, picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches poll, matched that prediction by tallying 169 points to tie with Alabama.

Arkansas, led by individual champion Eric Fernandez (24:10.60), took the men’s crown with 33 points, followed by Florida (66), Georgia (68) and Kentucky (126).

The Tennessee men, who lost three of their top six finishers from the 2010 SEC meet and underwent a coaching change in the offseason, managed to avoid a dropoff despite counting the scores of two freshmen and a sophomore at this meet after losing Michael Spooner (11th), Chris Rapp (26th) and Steve Fassino (44th) from a year ago.

“We weren’t scheduled (predicted) to win, but I think we came in here and ran solid,” UT Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “I like to win, but we’re not there yet.

“For the younger guys, it was a difficult situation, coming in not knowing how to respond athletically and what to do. If I could be coaching them right now, (as a starting point) I could probably do some better things with the young gentlemen. They came in, they handled the transition with new coaching, and we came in here and we ran respectable. We like to win. That’s my goal, to win, and I believe we’ll get to that point.”

Instead of playing it safe, Bodary went for a big finish in his final SEC meet by running with the leaders and hoping to hold on at the end on his home course. Over the latter stages of the race, however, he was simply unable to keep up that pace and reported in with a 28th-place finish. The senior navigated the 8000-meter men’s layout in 25:07.40 against a field of 96 runners, setting the tone for his teammates for the fifth time this season.

“Bodary went for the jugular; he went for the whole shebang,” Clark said. “If he had run for the top ten, it would have been a little different run. But he went for something exceptional, which was a top-three finish.

“He went for it. And I commend him for that. He held on well and gave everything he had.”

Sophomore Jake Rainey and freshman Austin Whitelaw weren’t far behind Bodary, crossing the line 30th in 25:12.25 and 32nd (31st scorer) in 25:16.11, respectively.

Rainey improved four places from his SEC All-Freshman effort of 2010, while Whitelaw earned a spot on this year’s all-rookie squad with his performance as one of the top seven newcomers.

Senior Tom Gilmartin ran fourth for Tennessee, placing 34th (33rd scorer) in 25:21.32, while freshman Jeremy Dickie was the fifth man in 52nd place (47th) at 25:53.63. Rainey, Gilmartin and Dickie all had personal-record marks for 8K. “Jake, best race of the season; Whitelaw, best race of the season, doing a nice job of making the SEC All-Freshman Team,” Clark said. “Tommy Gilmartin, best race of the season. That’s what you want.

“Jeremy Dickie, another freshman, ran a good last half of the race. He was a little too far back, a little too far back. But it was a good race for a freshman. He had a lot going on, and he wasn’t feeling well for several weeks coming into this. He pulled it together for the guys today.”

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Senior Chris Bodary once again paced the Tennessee cross country team, leading the Vols at the Brooks Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.

For the third time this season, senior Chris Bodary was out front for the Vols. Making his final collegiate cross country return to his home state, the native of Downingtown covered the 8000-meter Goodman Campus Course in 25 minutes, 28 seconds to finish 90th (87th scorer) in a field of 402 runners in the men’s Gold Race. Bodary had crossed the line 61st a year ago in 25:00.

The Tennessee men finished 37th out of 45 teams on the 8000-meter layout, accumulating 1020 points. Fourth-ranked Oklahoma claimed victory in the men’s competition, tallying 34 points. Twenty-second-ranked Georgetown was a distant second with 134.

Other scorers for the UT men included senior Tom Gilmartin in 249th (217th) at 26:31, freshman Austin Whitelaw in 251st (218th) at 26:32, sophomore Jake Rainey in 267th (232nd) at 26:38 and freshman Jeremy Dickie in 315th (266th) at 27:09. Bodary, Gilmartin, Whitelaw and Dickie have counted toward the scoring total in all three races for UT this season, while Rainey has contributed in each of his two starts in 2011.

Running but not factoring into the points were sophomore Stephen Derlath in 341st (281st) at 27:23, sophomore Daniel Tobin in 353rd (289th) at 27:35, sophomore Alex McCandless in 363rd at 27:43, freshman J.R. Creekmore in 387th at 28:20 and senior Scott March in 395th at 29:09.

“After a good performance on our home course at the Tennessee Invitational, our guys came to a meet that had several good teams and appeared to get a little stage fright,” UT Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “Before going into a conference or regional meet, we needed to have a large meet with pretty decent competition. You don’t want this (performance) to happen, period, but at least it gives us something to evaluate and move forward with.

“We’re a lot better team than we showed today, obviously, and I believe the necessary adjustments will be made.”

CRIMSON CLASSIC TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Tennessee men got a runner-up showing from Chris Bodary on Oct. 15 at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. His effort helped the Vols wind up eighth of 21 squads in the men’s 8K race at Harry Pritchett Running Park. Georgia Tech was the men’s champion with 83 points, with Auburn taking second at 122. The Vols tallied 166 points for their eighth-place outcome.

Bodary, a senior from Downingtown, Pa., set the tone for the Tennessee men for the fourth time in as many races and notched his third runner-up performance of 2011.

His 25:01.59 effort left him behind only Alabama’s Carrison Kemei, who crossed the line first in 24:49.25. Bodary was able to hold off Nabil Hamid of Kennesaw State, who covered the course in 25:02.14.

“Individually, we had a good performance from Chris Bodary against plenty of SEC runners,” UT Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “Stephen Derlath was very tough, with a great second half and was solid in the middle. Tommy Gilmartin is gaining confidence, and we want to see more of that from him. Austin Whitelaw wasn’t at his best all week, but he hung tough today.”

Vols joining Bodary in producing UT’s scoring total were Austin Whitelaw (33rd [31st], 25:59.93), Tom Gilmartin (34th [32nd], 26:00.37), Jeremy Dickie (47th [45th], 26:23.94) and Stephen Derlath (60th [56th], 26:37.13).

“As we head down the stretch, we all have to be right on the right day,” Clark said. “It’s as simple as that, because we just don’t have

NCAA SOUTH REGIONAL TUSCALOOSA, ALA. -- Vol senior Chris Bodary turned in an all-region performance on Nov. 12, placing 12th at the NCAA South Regional at Harry Pritchett Running Park.

While the Big Orange got a superb individual effort from a proven leader, as has been customary this season, nothing else

seemed to fall in place for J.J. Clark’s team. As a result, the Vols turned in a 12th-place showing out of 24 teams, tallying 341 points.

Sixteenth-ranked Florida State captured the men’s title, accumulating 40 points, followed by Florida with 68, sending both on to the NCAA meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 21.

As he has done all season long, Bodary blazed a trail for his Vol teammates to follow, crossing the finish line 12th out of 159 men in 31 minutes, 30.2 seconds over 10,000 meters.

It was an improvement of 11 places over 2010 and enabled the native of Downington, Pa., to earn All-South Region accolades for the second year in a row.

Bodary held nothing back in trying to secure an individual NCAA Championship meet berth, but he came up just short of an automatic bid. The top four runners not on the two NCAA automatic-qualifying squads receive invitations, and Bodary was the sixth such finisher. He hoped for an at-large nod when the NCAA made its announcement on Sunday evening but was denied.

“I am very proud of Chris Bodary and the effort he gave today,” said Clark, UT’s director of track & field/cross country. “He did a great job of executing the plan and was right there in the position he needed to be. He was five seconds out of that fourth automatic individual spot and just a half second behind the fifth guy.”

Sophomore Jake Rainey was Tennessee’s second finisher in the men’s race, winding up 35th in 32:27.6 for his second strong outing in a row after running ninth for the Vols here on Oct. 15 at the Crimson Classic. Freshman Austin Whitelaw was the third Vol to finish, running 33:32.7 to place 80th (79th scorer), followed by sophomore Stephen Derlath in 110th (106th) at 34:13.4 and freshman Jeremy Dickie in 113th (109th) at 34:22.5 to round out the scoring five.

Tennessee’s fortunes took a damaging blow in the early going of the men’s race, when senior Tom Gilmartin suffered an injury. He gamely finished the course, but he wasn’t in UT’s scoring five for the first time this season.

“I’ve said it all season long; everyone has to run perfectly for us to do well,” Clark said.

“That was not the case for us today, due to some circumstances beyond our control.

“Tommy G. wasn’t himself after being injured early in the race, and to lose him out of that top five hurt. I feel that overall, the transition for the guys and me this season was a successful one, and it only gets better from here.”

2011 Lady Vol Meet Recaps BELMONT-VU OPENER NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Brittany Sheffey paced the Lady Vols to fifth place, as the Big Orange women popped the top on the 2011 season at the Belmont-VU Opener on Sept. 2.

Sheffey had an impressive return after redshirting last season due to injury. The product of Bellport, N.Y., turned in a careerbest clocking for 4000 meters with a 14:11.83 readout to place fourth out of 78 runners.

Vanderbilt tallied 18 points to capture top honors in the women’s team standings.

Lipscomb (63), Kentucky (76), Belmont (99) and Tennessee (129) rounded out the top five. The Lady Vols were seventh a year ago.

Two veterans and a pair of freshmen also counted toward the Lady Vols’ scoring total.

Junior Ramzee Fondren was the Big Orange’s second finisher in the women’s race. Her career-best 15:33.13 mark placed her 41st overall (scoring 29th), followed by classmate Kelsey Kane in a personal record of 15:34.57 to wind up 42nd (30th). Freshmen Lizzie Cornell was 43rd (31st) in 15:35.31, while Amirah Johnson wound up 50th (35th) in 16:02.81.

“It was good to have Brittany Sheffey back out there for the women’s team,” UT Director of Track & Field and Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “She knocked some rust off and did a good job today. Obviously, we have some gaps to cover, and I believe we have some people capable of doing that when the time is necessary.”

TENNESSEE INVITATIONAL MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Lady Vol Brittany Sheffey captured her first career victory, as the Big Orange cross country team competed Sept. 17 in the Tennessee Invitational at Lambert Acres Golf Club.

Kentucky prevailed in the team race, winning with a first-place total of 26 points to the Lady Vols’ 33 on the 5000-meter women’s layout.

Sheffey, a senior from Bellport, N.Y., led from start to finish en route to her first collegiate cross country win, paced the team for the second time this season and contributed to UT’s scoring tally for the 20th-consecutive race in her career.

She did so with a readout of 17 minutes, 43.46 seconds that ranks as the fifth-fastest registered by a Lady Vol on the 5K course at Lambert Acres. That mark propelled her across the finish line nearly 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up time of 18:13.22, registered

by Kentucky junior Chelsea Oswald.

“Brittany was expected to run well, and she went out and did that for us today,” UT Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “It’s always good to do what you are expected to do, and it was nice to see her come out of the race with her first win in cross country.”

Making her season debut, senior Chanelle Price posted an impressive third-place result for the home team. Known for her prowess on the oval, the two-time SEC 800m champ rolled to a career-best 18:31.13 clocking on the trail Saturday to aid the cause for the Big Orange.

Junior Ramzee Fondren, who kept pace early with a lead pack that included teammates Sheffey and Price, had easily the finest result of her UT cross country tenure.

Despite dropping off the lead pace as the race wore on, she was able to hold on just enough to deliver the Lady Vols their third top-10 finisher of the race, hitting the chute at 18:45.58 to snare sixth place.

Freshman Amirah Johnson and junior Kelsey Kane counted toward the team total for the second time this season. Johnson did so by covering the distance in 19:29.26 to place 11th, while Kane finished right behind her in 12th at 19:30.44. That gave the Lady Vols a one-through-five runner time spread of one minute, 46.98 seconds.

Other finishers for the Lady Vols included senior Elizabeth Altizer in 14th (13th scorer) at 20:21.90, junior Chelsea Knotts in 15th (14th) at 20:26.24, sophomore Patavia Lowery in 16th at 20:33.94 and senior Elizabeth Tiller in 18th at 20:47.51.

BROOKS PAUL SHORT RUN BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Senior Brittany Sheffey once again paced the Tennessee cross country team, leading the Lady Vols at theBrooks Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.

Sheffey was UT’s top female finisher for the third straight meet and contributed to the scoring cause for J.J. Clark’s squad in her 21st-consecutive race. The product of Bellport, N.Y., crossed the line in 21 minutes, 19 seconds to place 41st in a field of 396 runners in the women’s Gold Race on the 6000-meter Goodman Campus Course. Sheffey had placed 14th here in 2009 in a career-best 20:39.

The Lady Vols, who came in 38th a year ago, climbed to 32nd out of 45 squads this time around with 879 points despite the absence of two of their top-five runners.

Third-ranked Providence captured the women’s team trophy over No. 5 Villanova, 101-104. No. 1 Villanova wound up fourth at 141, just behind the 125-point collaboration of 12th-ranked Syracuse.

The Lady Vols’ Amber Zimmerman, who led UT in five of six races in 2010, completed her first race this season. The sophomore from Knoxville (Webb) concluded the race 172nd (157th scorer) in 22:47. Walk-on Kacey Nobert of St. Agnes Academy in Memphis, who recently joined the squad, ran third for the Big Orange and placed 189th (172nd) in 22:56.

Rounding out the scoring for the UT women were junior Kelsey Kane in 246th (220nd) at 23:23 and freshman Amirah Johnson in 346th (289th) at 24:24. Sheffey, Kane and Johnson have been in UT’s top five all season, while Zimmerman and Nobert were first-time contributors in 2011.

Not factoring into UT’s sum were junior Nijgia Snapp in 354th (293rd) at 24:30, senior Elizabeth Altizer in 371st (300th) at 24:58 and senior Elizabeth Tiller in 380th at 25:26.

Senior Chanelle Price did not finish the race after appearing to twist her ankle, and junior Ramzee Fondren, the team’s No. 2 runner two weekends ago, did not make the trip. Clark said Price’s injury was not serious.

“We had two of our top-five runners not with the team,” said Clark, UT’s director of track & field/cross country. “Ramzee didn’t come, and Chanelle didn’t finish. Otherwise, we had some bright spots with Amber back in the mix and Kacey (Nobert) not too far away from her in her first college meet. We’ll just have to get better races from Sheffey and implement Ramzee and Chanelle, and we’ll be in a better spot.”

CRIMSON CLASSIC TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Tennessee cross country program got a victorious individual performance from Brittany Sheffey in the women’s race on Oct. 15 at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Her effort helped the Lady Vols finish third in the 25-team women’s 5000-meter race at Harry Pritchett Running Park. Alabama won the women’s team title with 88 points, followed by Ole Miss with 91 and UT with 127.

Sheffey, a senior from Bellport, N.Y., cruised to a career-best time 17:11.71, holding off runner-up Lauren D’Alessio of Samford (17:17.34) by nearly six seconds.

The UT standout ran with a lead pack of six runners for much of the race until D’Alessio pushed the pace. With 300 to go, Sheffey overtook the Samford runner and claimed her second victory of the season to go along with her title at the 5K Tennessee Invitational on Sept. 17.

“We had our best team race of the season so far, but I am looking for continued improvement as we move forward,” UT Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark said.

“It was a nice win for Brittany against some SEC runners. She had a lot more left at the end than she realized.”

UT also got scoring help in the women’s race from Chanelle Price (19th, 18:12.83), Amber Zimmerman (27th [26th], 18:22.68),

Kelsey Kane (43rd [40th], 18:48.85) and Amirah Johnson (44th [41st], 18:49.60).

SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS MARYVILLE, TENN. -- As she has done in every meet this season, Brittany Sheffey led the charge for Tennessee, her effort enabling the Big Orange women to place seventh at the SEC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 31 at Lambert Acres Golf Club.

The Lady Vols, who came in expected to place ninth by the coaches, bounced back from last year’s disappointing 12th-place outcome with a 184-point, seventh-place effort. Vanderbilt captured the women’s trophy with 30, followed by Arkansas (61) and Florida (62) in the top three. Kristen Gillespie of Arkansas was the individual winner in a course-record 20:19.84.

Sheffey became only the ninth UT woman to earn All-SEC acclaim three times in a career. She made the second team once again, finishing 12th out of 104 by covering the 6000-meter course in 21:00.63 while running with lead group for much of the race. She also finished 12th in 2008 and 2009.

Sophomore Amber Zimmerman, 42nd a year ago, was UT’s No. 2 finisher and claimed 26th overall in 21:34.13, while Chanelle Price checked in 43rd (41st) in 22:02.84 after taking 72nd in 2010.

Freshman walk-on Kacey Nobert, competing for only the second time this season, filled the No. 4 scoring slot. She did so by clocking a 22:17.45 readout to wind up 53rd (49th). Freshman Amirah Johnson was in the scoring five for the fifth straight meet, placing 62nd in 22:32.57.

Both runners recorded career-best times for 6K. “The women’s race was a little different scenario,” UT Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “We were ranked (in the SEC) early in the season around ninth. We started pulling some things together and we were actually ranked around top five. It might have happened, but Ramzee ran too hard.

She did not follow the plan, and Sheffey could’ve gone a little more, could’ve done a little better. But from a team standpoint, Sheffey locked it in, did O.K. and put us in position to score some points.

“Zimmerman came around pretty well.

Chanelle did this cross country thing for the team and really, really helped us out.

The native of Bellport, N.Y., finished a perfect 24 of 24 races in her college career of counting toward Tennessee’s point total.

She’ll now run individually in the NCAA Championship meet after earning a bid as one of the top four runners not on the two automatic-advancing teams. It marks the eighth time in Clark’s 10 seasons of leading the women’s program that he had either a team or individual competing at the national meet.

“Brittany rebounded very nicely from the SEC meet and beat some runners today that finished ahead of her in that race,” said Clark, UT’s director of track & field/cross country. “It was very rewarding and exciting to see her punch her ticket to the NCAA Championship meet for the first time. We look forward to seeing what she can do in Terre Haute nine days from now.”

As for the team, the absence of junior Ramzee Fondren and freshman Kacey Nobert, and the inability of sophomore Amber Zimmerman to complete the race, proved too much to overcome. All three were expected by Clark to be in his top five based on their performances at the past several meets.

After Sheffey, senior Chanelle Price was the Big Orange’s next female finisher, placing 60th (55th) in 22:13.9. Also counting toward the final total were junior Kelsey Kane in 92nd (85th) with a careerbest 22:48.6, freshman Amirah Johnson in 123rd (115th) at 23:27.9 and junior Nijgia Snapp in 131st with a career-best 23:39.5.

“I’ve said it all season long; everyone has to run perfectly for us to do well,” Clark said. “That was not the case for us today, due to some circumstances beyond our control.

“On the women’s side, I don’t care what kind of team you have, you can’t overcome three runners out of your top five not being in the mix. Considering what we lost, we held together pretty well to finish where we did after coming in ranked 10th in the region.”

NCAA SOUTH REGIONAL TUSCALOOSA, ALA. -- Lady Vol senior Brittany Sheffey qualified for her first NCAA Championship meet, placing eighth at the NCAA South Regional on Nov. 12 at Harry Pritchett Running Park.

While the Big Orange got a superb individual effort from Sheffey, as has been customary this season, nothing else seemed to fall in place for J.J. Clark’s team. As a result, the Lady Vols, who finished the race without three of their projected top-five runners, checked in 13th out of 27 schools with 384 points.

Top-ranked Florida State and No. 4 Vanderbilt advanced to nationals, tallying point totals of 34 and 54, respectively.

Sheffey made her third All-South Region squad and earned her first national bid, covering the 6000-meter course in 20:46.2 to place eighth of 191 runners.

MEET THE COACHES

J.J. CLARK Director of Track & Field and Cross Country J.J. Clark is in his 10th year at Tennessee, where he spent seven seasons as head coach of the women’s cross country and track & field programs before also assuming leadership of the men’s track & field team prior to the 2009-10 campaign.

In 2011-12, Clark adds another responsibility to his list, as he takes over coaching duties of the men’s cross country and distance units after coaching only the women’s group the past nine years.

A two-time NCAA and six-time SEC champion coach with the Lady Vol track & field and cross country teams from 2002-09, Clark heads up one of the most storied collegiate programs in the nation. The cross country teams have thrived at UT, boasting a national championship and 30 SEC titles between them since their inception. The men’s and women’s teams also have made a combined 44 appearances at national championship meets and hosted the NCAA Championships together in 1990 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Rockford, Tenn.

On the oval, Tennessee has won seven national championships and claimed 51 SEC titles (22 indoors/29 outdoors) in track & field through the years.

CLARK’S BIG ORANGE SUCCESS...

The architect of an amazing reclamation project with the women’s cross country and track & field programs at Rocky Top, Clark spent seven impressive seasons in Knoxville before assuming control of both the men’s and women’s teams.

During that time, the women’s cross country program benefited immensely from Clark’s tutelage, claiming SEC hardware from 2003-05 and NCAA South Region plaques from 2002-05, and making NCAA Championships appearances from 2002-06. He stands as the all-time winningest women’s cross country coach in the history of UT Athletics.

On the trails, his distaff troops carved out eight consecutive top-three performances at the SEC Championships (2002-09), including three runner-up finishes to go along with the three victories. At the regional level, Team Orange has wound up fourth or better in eight of nine seasons under his watch, finishing third three times along with the four triumphs the squad has enjoyed.

During the track & field portion of the season, he has directed the Lady Vols to NCAA Indoor National Championships in 2005 and 2009, SEC Indoor Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2009, and an NCAA Mideast Regional crown outdoors in 2005.

With Clark at the helm, Tennessee has enjoyed six top-five NCAA women’s track & field finishes (Indoors: 1st in 2005 and 2009, 2nd in 2010, 3rd in 2007 and 4th in 2004; Outdoors: 4th in 2005) and four additional top-10 outings (Indoors: seventh in 2011, t8th in 2008; Outdoors: t7th in 2004, t10th in 2009) during his stay in Knoxville. UT also has nine SEC top-three outcomes (seven indoors, two outdoors) since 2003, with runner-up efforts indoors in 2004 and 2008 in addition to the titles won in 2005, 2007 and 2009. He now is trying to match that feat with the men’s team.

21-TIME COACH OF THE YEAR...

Clark has been recognized far and wide for his acumen in track & field and cross country, earning a total of 21 coach of the year accolades (11 track & field/10 cross country) during a career which also includes 10 seasons as women’s cross country coach and assistant track & field coach at Florida (1992-2002).

Among his 10 honors for cross country, Clark is a five-time South Region Women’s Coach of the Year (1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) and a five-time SEC Women’s Coach of the Year (1996, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2005). His 1996 and 1997 recognitions came while he was at Florida.

The crafty skipper twice has been named national women’s collegiate indoor track & field coach of the year, reaping the award from the USTFCCCA in 2009 and the USTCA in 2005. Nike also selected him as its 1998 USA Elite Coach of the Year as well.

Clark has garnered regional track & field coach of the year distinction on five occasions, collecting USTFCCCA South Region Indoor women’s accord in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and USTCA South Region Indoor and Mideast Region Outdoor women’s kudos in 2005.

At the SEC level, the Big Orange boss was named the SEC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

DEVELOPING CHAMPIONS AND ALL-AMERICANS AT UT...

While winning national and conference titles now are annual, and realistic, goals, turning recruits into top-flight competitors has long been a hallmark of Clark and the Tennessee program. In cross country, Clark has groomed 14 female 14

athletes who have totaled 31 All-South Region awards in 10 seasons and 13 who’ve accumulated 23 total All-SEC honors. He added his first male honorees in 2011, as Austin Whitelaw earned SEC All-Freshman status and Chris Bodary made the AllSouth Region squad.

In addition to qualifying women’s teams for the NCAA Championships from 2002 to 2006, he also had Jackie Areson (2008, 2009, 2010), Sarah Bowman (2008), Brittany Sheffey (2011) and Katie Van Horn (2009, 2010) qualify as individuals, with Bowman placing 36th in 2008 to become the first female cross country AllAmerican at Tennessee since Sharon Dickie in 2000.

During Clark’s nine years at the wheel of Tennessee track & field, 38 athletes (35 female/three male) have combined to earn 167 (162 female/five male) AllAmerica certificates, with his charges collecting 12 NCAA titles (nine indoors and three outdoors, all by women). He also has produced 55 SEC championships (53 by women [29 indoors/24 outdoors] and two by men [one indoors/one outdoors] during that time period. Evander Wells was his first male All-America recipient, taking fourth in the 200m outdoors in 2010.

Two of Clark’s pupils, 400m whiz DeeDee Trotter and long jump ace Tianna Madison, ascended to stardom on the international stage before their college days were through, resulting in their early departures for the lucrative world of professional track & field.

Among UT’s 12 national women’s event winners under Clark’s watch are 2011 indoor 5000m champ Jackie Areson, 2010 indoor and outdoor 800m champ Wright, 2009 indoor mile champ and NCAA meet-record-holder Bowman, 2005 indoor and outdoor long jump winner Madison, 2004 indoor 800m champ Nicole Cook, 2004 outdoor 400m winner Trotter, 2004 DMR legs Brooke Novak, Trotter, Cook and Lindsay Hyatt; 2008 DMR contributors Brittany Sheffey, Brittany Jones, Wright and Bowman; 2009 world-record-setting DMR members Wright, Chanelle Price, Jones and Bowman, who checked in with a sizzling 10:50.98 readout to rewrite women’s history, and 2010 DMR victors Wright, Ellen Wortham, Price and Sheffey.

ACADEMIC PROWESS...

In the classroom, Clark ’s high expectations have been met with equal success, as his track & field/cross country troops have tallied 197 (157 women/40 men) SEC Academic Honor Roll recognitions, 24 female Capital One Academic AllDistrict IV nods and 10 female Academic All-America citations since 2002.

Bowman became his first two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honoree in 2009, as she followed up second-team distinction in 2008 with firstteam status as a senior. Also earning accolades in 2009 were first-teamer Wright and second-team selection Amanda Alexander. Wright would repeat and be named Academic All-American of the Year for track & field/cross country, while Areson also made the first team in 2010 and Price followed in 2011. Katie Flaute and Christina Billings were second-team ESPN The Magazine honorees in 2007 and 2003, respectively, while Felicia Guliford garnered Academic All-America acclaim from the Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association in fall 2004.

Additionally, Clark’s team and individuals are consistently honored by the USTFCCCA and SEC for academics. In 2008 and 2009, Bowman was named both the USTFCCCA Indoor Women’s Track Scholar Athlete of the Year and the SEC Women’s Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She also joined Guliford and Wright as Lady Vol harriers nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year.

Wright’s 2010 campaign was highlighted by the H. Boyd McWhorter SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, SEC Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and USTFCCCA Indoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year, giving UT the honor three years running. The Lady Vols also were recognized as the USTFCCCA Indoor Scholar Team of the Year in both 2009 and 2010.

Price followed in the footsteps of Bowman and Wright. She became UT’s four-straight SEC Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year honoree in 2011 as a co-winner.

PENN RELAYS AND RECORD-SETTING MARKS...

In 2004, Clark returned the Big Orange women to vogue at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa., as the Lady Vol contingent pulled off a hat trick of baton event victories at the Penn Relays. Tennessee quartets captured a trio of “Championships of America” in the distance medley, 4x800m and sprint medley relays, with the latter establishing a collegiate record. UT, which also added an sprint medley relay title in 2006 and a DMR crown in 2007, had not won that many relays in Philly since 1984.

Tennessee once again pulled off a triple in 2009 and 2010, with Bowman earning athlete of the meet honors for playing a role in UT winning the DMR, 4x1500m and 4x800m events in 2009. The 4x1500m unit ran a world-record clocking, while the 4x8 brought the baton home in an American-record readout. Wright, meanwhile, was instrumental in leading UT to victories in those races in 2010.

Those 2009 efforts came after an indoor campaign where the Lady Vols twice posted eye-catching marks in the DMR. First, UT ran 10:56.40 for an American record at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Then, the Big Orange won the NCAA title in March with the aforementioned world best.

Speaking of records, there also have been some other league and NCAA women’s marks set on Clark’s watch. Among them, the 2004, 2010 and 2011 DMRs lowered the SEC record to 11:16.61, 11:14.59 and 11:05.37, respectively, while Cook’s 2005 collegiate record in the 800m also stands as an SEC best.

MEET THE COACHES In addition to the DMR upgrade in 2011, Areson posted a league 3K indoor best of 9:10.49, while Liz Costello lowered the SEC 10K mark to 33:42.96.

Madison’s leap of 22-8.50 at the 2005 SEC Outdoor meet, while not a record due to a slight gust of 2.2 mps, stood then as the best mark in the 28 years that women had competed in the long jump at the conference championships.

Madison’s measurement of 22-3 at the 2005 NCAA Indoor meet, meanwhile, tied Carol Lewis’ American collegiate record and was just short of the NCAA standard.

During Clark’s first nine years on The Hill, UT women’s marks in 16 events indoors and 18 events outdoors have been revised, while one men’s best (outdoors) has been eclipsed since 2010.

In addition to that, 21 Lady Vol freshman records (10 indoors/11 outdoors) have fallen, and two Vol rookie standards (both indoors in 2011) have tumbled.

Both own the school records in their respective events, part of a total of 12 such marks accomplished by Clark-tutored athletes at Florida.

In cross country, Clark led the school to its first-ever team appearance at the NCAA Championships in 1994. UF was extended invitations four more times to the national meet under his leadership, going in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999 and charting a top team finish of 16th on the third of its five trips. Clark also guided Florida to SEC titles in 1996 and 1997, and the Gators claimed NCAA regional titles in 1997 and 1998.

Among those drawing kudos for their standout cross country performances were Wells, the 1995 and 1996 SEC champion, and Hilary White, the 2000 SEC Freshman Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Wells and Velsen picked up All-America citations during their careers.

REPRESENTING YOUR COUNTRY...

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE COACHING MEN, WOMEN...

Internationally, Tennessee also returned to the scene under Clark, the 2008 U.S. Olympic women’s middle distance coach. His former athletes Bowman (1500m), Cook (800m), Madison (LJ), Trotter (400m/4x400mR), Bennett (800m), Shanna Dickenson (throws), Dickie (distance/XC), Lynne Layne (sprints), Jeneba Tarmoh (sprints) and Cleo Tyson (sprints), and current Lady Vol Price (800m), have performed well for Team USA. Current star Annie Alexander and ex-Lady Vols Rose-Anne Galligan (distance/XC), Toyin Olupona (sprints) and Patricia Hall (sprints), meanwhile, have been fine representatives for Trinidad & Tobago, Ireland, Canada and Jamaica, respectively. Newcomer Justin Hunter became Clark’s first international male competitor, finishing sixth in the long jump at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships.

World success showered the Big Orange in 2004, as college junior Trotter ran on the victorious U.S. Olympic 4x400m relay unit and grabbed fifth in the open 400 meters before becoming the first underclass Lady Vol to turn pro. Clark also moved four of his pupils into the 800m finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials, where Bennett and Cook finished fourth and seventh, respectively.

He advanced two (wife Jearl Miles-Clark and sister Hazel Clark) to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, where Miles-Clark wound up sixth in her fifth trip to the Olympiad, while a freak accident prevented Clark from advancing beyond the prelims in her second visit to the Games.

Hazel would also qualify for the 2008 Games, competing for her brother, J.J., who served as the women’s middle distance coach for the U.S. In 2005, Madison would leap to international stardom, winning the long jump at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships.

As mentioned previously, Clark’s influence also extends into the international arena, and his history of preparing athletes for competition is second to none.

Proof of that was evident in 2000, when three of his pupils, sisters Joetta and Hazel and wife Jearl, finished one-two-three in the 800m at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif., and went on to represent America in Sydney.

During his time as head of “Team Clark,” the 1986 Villanova graduate prepared Joetta to compete in four Olympics prior to retiring, Jearl to make five appearances and win two Olympic golds and two world championships, and Hazel to make the finals in her initial trip to the Olympics in 2000 and qualify again in 2004 and 2008. His spouse also maintains the American record she set in the 800m in 1999 and was the 2004 Olympic Trials champion and 2003 USATF outdoor victor in the 800m as well as the 2002 winner in the 400m.

In addition to the familial success, he also coached three-time Olympian Mark Everett to a No. 1 USA ranking and fourth-place world rating in the 800 meters. Nike recognized Clark for his work in continuing to develop world-class athletes, naming him the 1998 USA Elite Coach of the Year.

Clark’s abilities have also been noticed and rewarded by his sport’s national governing body. After serving as an assistant for the U.S. women at the 1999 IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Greece, he would receive the honor of being named head coach of the 2001 team in Edmonton, Canada. As previously mentioned, he later earned the distinction of being the middle distance coach for the U.S. women at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

BACKGROUND, EDUCATION AND FAMILY...

IMPACTING BIG ORANGE ATHLETICS...

Clark’s impact has been felt beyond the programs he coaches, as well, as his squads’ SEC and NCAA finishes have fueled the most extensive department-wide spree of female sport success in the history of UT Athletics. The Lady Vols were declared the SEC women’s all-sports winners in 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06 by the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group. Though the Lady Vols and Tennessee finished second in the SEC all-sports standings in 2006-07, the women’s and men’s programs combined to place seventh nationally in the U.S. Sports Academy Director’s Cup standings, marking UT’s highest ranking in history.

LIFE BEFORE ROCKY TOP...

One of the most respected distance coaches in the nation, Clark enjoyed 10 successful seasons as an assistant from 1992 to 2002 at the University of Florida and spent the 1991-92 year there as a graduate assistant. His group of athletes played a key role in Florida’s SEC Indoor and Outdoor track & field titles in 1997 and 1998, its indoor crown in 2002 and its third-place national finish indoors in 2002.

It has been estimated that his charges accumulated more than 650 points in SEC action and 110-plus at the NCAA level during his 10 seasons as a full-time aide.

During his tenure with the Gators, Clark groomed two athletes who combined for three SEC Athlete of the Year awards in cross country and track, and developed competitors who racked up five NCAA Championships, 44 NCAA AllAmerica citations and 32 conference championship plaques. Among those were his sister, Hazel, a three-time national champ in the 800 meters and the SEC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 1998 and 1999, and Becki Wells, a two-time vic-

A product of Maplewood, N.J., and a graduate of Columbia High School, Clark made trips to Knoxville during his teen years to watch his sister Joetta compete for the Lady Vols and saw her help Tennessee win the 1981 AIAW National Outdoor Championship. Those examples left an impression on the younger brother, and he blazed his own trail in track & field.

First, he set his own standard of excellence in running, winning the New Jersey high school state title in the mile and two-mile as a senior in 1982. With that kind of effort, he then earned a scholarship to Villanova, where he would develop into a sub-four minute miler in his competitive days en route to qualifying for the 1988 U.S Olympic T rials.

After graduating from VU in May of 1986 with a B.A. in communications, Clark returned to his prep alma mater and served as assistant track coach. While at CHS from 1986 to 1989, he worked with the girls’ and boys’ middle distance and sprints corps. Then, in 1991, he made his transition into collegiate coaching, serving as a graduate assistant at Florida for one year before being hired full time there.

Clark, who resides in Knoxville with wife Jearl and son Jorell, studied anatomy and physiology coursework in graduate school at UF. Bridging the gap between his high school coaching and college experience, he also took courses in nutrition and exercise physiology in 1990 at Kean College in Union, N.J., and became certified as a licensed sports massage therapist in 1991 from the Florida School of Massage in Gainesville. His father is Joe Lewis Clark, the bat-wielding principal of Paterson, New Jersey’s Eastside High School, depicted by actor Morgan Freeman in the 1989 movie “Lean on Me.”

MEET THE COACHES

MARY JAYNE REEVES Assistant Coach Cross Country/Track & Field

An all-state performer in cross country and track in his only season of participation as a senior at Chattanooga Christian School, Goetz was the first recruit by the Bryan program in 2005. He qualified four times for the NAIA Cross Country Championships and earned All-America acclaim in the mile in 2008 for a fourthplace finish on the oval. He also was rewarded for his work in the classroom, picking up NAIA Academic All-America accolades in 2009 and 2010.

Mary Jayne (Harrelson) Reeves is in her first season working with the Tennessee track & field and cross country teams. She joined the Big Orange program after spending the 2010-11 campaign on the staff at the University of Virginia.

Reeves assists J.J. Clark in working with the UT cross country and distance squads and plays a key role in the recruiting process.

In her first season at UT, she helped Clark groom three athletes who earned all-star honors. Lady Vol senior Brittany Sheffey made the All-South Region and All-SEC squads and qualified for her first NCAA Championship meet, while Vol senior Chris Bodary earned All-South Region accolades and rookie Austin Whitelaw was a member of the SEC All-Freshman squad.

At UVa, Reeves coached women’s cross country and distance runners, developing two ACC champions, three regional qualifiers and three NCAA Championship qualifiers. During the campaign, there were three school records broken, two athletes made the finals of the USA Championships and her NCAA qualifiers cranked out an individual runner-up outing and a third-place relay showing at the national championship meet.

In addition to her coaching experience at Virginia, Reeves was at Virginia Tech from 2001 to 2004, serving as an assistant track & field and cross country coach for the Hokie men and women. Besides coordinating the recruitment of male and female student-athletes, she produced two All-Americans (one cross country, one track), six all-region cross country runners and three conference champions.

Between her stints in Blacksburg and Charlottesville, and while continuing her professional running career, the Timberland, N.C., native and her husband, Jon, owned and operated Reeves Tennis and Fitness, Inc., in Newnan, Ga. Among her duties were coordinating strength and conditioning for junior and adult athletes, creating women’s fitness programs, directing summer camps, scheduling programming, and managing the budget and accounting for the business.

Reeves is making her second stop in Knoxville, having trained as a professional distance runner with Clark from 2004-07. In a post-collegiate career that stretched from 2001 to 2010, she represented both Nike and Brooks and was consistently ranked among the top five female 1500m runners in the U.S. Among her accomplishments were gold medals in the 800 and 1500m at the 2007 NACAC Championships, silver medals in the 1500m at both the 2003 and 2007 Pan Am Games and silvers in the 800m and 1500m at the 2002 U.S. Indoor Championships. She also participated in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing fifth in the 1500m in 2000 and 2004.

The recipient of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Appalachian State University in 2001, Reeves was a two-time NCAA champion (1500m), six-time All-American and 26-time conference champion, including three straight titles in cross country, during her collegiate career. She was twice named the Southern Conference’s Female Athlete of the Year and was the 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year in North Carolina. The Southern Conference inducted her into its hall of fame in 2010.

DANIEL GOETZ Volunteer Assistant Cross Country/Track & Field Daniel Goetz is in his first season as a volunteer assistant at Tennessee. He will be working with the men’s and women’s distance runners.

A 2010 graduate of Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn., Goetz began his coaching career in 2010 as an assistant for the Lions’ cross country team. He helped the men’s squad post a seventh-place finish at the NAIA Championships, the best in school history.

In January 2011, he enrolled in graduate school at UT to pursue a master’s in kinesiology with a double focus in biomechanics and exercise physiology.

He teaches an activity class as a graduate teaching assistant in the kinesiology department and observed the Tennessee track & field staff before becoming a part of the unit in 2011.
