OPPONENTS AT A QUICK GLANCE

Following back-to-back home wins, the No. 18 Lady Vols begin another four-match SEC road trip on Wednesday, when they square off against No. 25 Kentucky in Lexington on ESPNU. The match will be a battle of the top two teams in the SEC East, as both squads rank in the top three in hitting percentage in the conference.

By starting the season a perfect 8-0 against SEC schools, the Lady Vols have now won 11 straight matches this season and 11 consecutive conference matches dating back to last season.

Tennessee will also make a stop in Starkville, Miss. on Sunday to battle Mississppi State.

Tennessee has defeated the Wildcats in five consecutive matches, including downing UK on ESPNU a year ago in Knoxville. Prior to UT winning the last five matches versus UK, Kentucky defeated the Big Orange in five straight, spanning from 2006-08.

Under head coach Rob Patrick, the Lady Vols have been a matchup nightmare for Mississippi State.

Patrick is 21-1 against the Bulldogs, including winning the last six meetings.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT The wins continued this past weekend for the Lady Vols, who extended their winning streak to 11 matches with victories over Alabama and Ole Miss. By sweeping the Crimson Tide and gutting out a five-set nail bitter versus the Rebels, Tennessee (15-2, 8-0) is in the midst of its longest winning streak since 2004 and currently one of three teams nationally to have a current winning streak of 11 matches or better. By starting off the SEC slate with eight straight wins, the Lady Vols tied their best conference start all time.

Against Ole Miss and Alabama, sophomore Kelsey Robinson registered her 11th and conference leading 12th double-doubles on the season. She led the team in both kills and digs against the Tide and Rebels, including notching her second 20-20 game of the season versus Ole Miss. Junior Leslie Cikra hit double digit kills in both matches on the weekend, blasting 13 versus UA and 16 against OM. Freshman Tiffany Baker provided a spark off the bench for UT, hitting a combined .393 on the weekend, highlighted by a hitting .444 against Alabama and registering 10 kills versus Ole Miss. Sophomore libero Ellen Mullins has recorded double digit digs in every conference match this season.

THE SEC (HISTORICALLY SPEAKING) Tennessee has won at least 15 SEC matches each of the last three seasons leading up to 2011, finishing with 15 in 2008 and 2010 and 16 in 2009.

Rob Patrick is 152-90 in his career in the SEC. In 12 of his 14 full seasons, he led the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record against the conference. In 2004, Tennessee stormed through the league with a 15-1 record, tying for first in the SEC and winning the SEC Tournament a week later.

PATRICK’S MILESTONE WINS

ROB PATRICK /// HEAD COACH Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 15 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in seven of the last nine campaigns. Prior

to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988.

Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford.

From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively.

During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

UT COACHES WIN TOTAL (LEADERS)

In July, former Iona College head coach Alan Edwards joined the UT staff as the team’s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

“I am very excited about adding Alan to our coaching staff,” Patrick said. “He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, both as a head coach and assistant coach from a number of Division-I programs, and is someone who I feel will be able to assimilate himself into our team very quickly.”

Edwards was most recently the head coach at Iona for the past five seasons, where he led the Gaels to a 75-79 overall record and four appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships.

During his time in New Rochelle, Edwards mentored one of the top defensive players in NCAA history in Allison Neiters. One of the top volleyball performers in Iona College and MAAC history, she shattered the Iona and conference career record for digs with 2,682, the fifth highest all-time total in the NCAA. Neiters was named the 2007 and 2008 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and 2009 MAAC Libero of the Year, as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week 17 times during her career. She was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Honor Roll member, two-time CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict selection and earned Iona’s Academic Merit Award for holding a 3.50 or above grade point average.

After a standout career at Mississippi State as a player and coaching the past three seasons as an assistant at ETSU, Rachel Cooper joined the Tenneessee staff in May. Prior to her time as an assistant coach at ETSU, Cooper served as a graduate assistant with the Buccaneers, where she assisted in recruiting and coordinated team travel and community service.

“The thing that most impresses me about Rachel is her work ethic,” Patrick said. “I’ve gotten to know her in recent years when she has come to work our camps and I am very excited that we have been able to add her to our coaching staff. She has experience in recruiting and understands the day-to-day responsibilities involved with running a high-level volleyball program.

“Rachel was also an outstanding player in the SEC and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in our conference. Her personality is very engaging and inviting, and I expect that our players will be able to easily relate to her.”

A Roscoe, Ill., native, Cooper was a four-year letter winner and starting outside hitter for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. A two-year captain and team Most Valuable Player, Cooper was also the first Bulldog athlete ever named SEC Player of the Week. She finished her career third all-time in kills with 1,405.

WHO’S BACK? Tennessee is returning three starters and a libero from last year’s roster: juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie Cikra, sophomore Kelsey Robinson and sophomore libero Ellen Mullins.

Robinson was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection in her first season with the Lady Vols at outside hitter.

Additional returners include sophomore setter Kylann Scheidt, senior setter Kelsey Mahoney and sophomore outside hitter Carly Sahagian.

WHO’S NEW? For one, most of the coaching staff is new. Patrick added two new assistants in the offseason: Alan Edwards, who was head coach at Iona; and Rachel Cooper, who was as an assistant at East Tennessee State.

On the court, the Lady Vols feature plenty of new faces with the eighth-ranked recruiting class in the country. JETER OUT FOR SEASON Senior leader Kayla Jeter will miss the entire 2011 season with a knee injury, associate athletics director for sports medicine Jenny Moshak reported.

Jeter suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee at team practice Aug. 19. Recovery time is estimated between six and nine months.

Jeter enjoyed her best season as a junior in 2010, earning first-team All-SEC and AVCA All-America honorable mention honors. The Solon, Ohio, native ranked second on the squad with 340 kills (2.98/set) and led UT with 19 solo blocks.

SEC COACHES’ SURVEY SAYS The Southeastern Conference coaches selected Tennessee to finish second in the Eastern Division, and they picked up two votes to win the SEC regularseason title. MOVING UP THE RANKINGS With wins over Alabama and Ole Miss this past weekend, Tennessee climbed up one spot in the AVCA coaching poll to No. 18 after receiving 483 points. The squad returned to the top 25 on Sept. 26, as it was ranked 23rd following wins over South Carolina and No. 6 Florida on the road. Despite going 3-0 to start the season, the Big Orange dropped out of the poll after week one, as it was ranked 24th in the preseason.

The Lady Vols are off to a strong start this season and are currently in the midst of an 11-match winning streak.

By defeating Alabama and Ole Miss this past weekend, Tennessee is currently has its longest winning streak since 2004, when that team rattled off 14 straight victories.

Tennessee is currently one of just four three nationally to have a streak of at least 11 straight wins.

Like UT, No. 5 Nebraska also stands at 11, while and No. 8 Hawaii is currently at 10. No. 1 Illinois remains undeafeated, winning its last 17 matches.

With a sweep over Georgia in the Southeastern Conference opener on Sept. 16, Tennessee Lady Vol head coach Rob Patrick recorded his 300th career win, all of which have come at UT. Patrick now has the highest winning percentage of any UT volleybal coach (.669), along with the most victories (307).

A MONUMENTAL WIN By downing the No. 6 Gators on Sept. 25, Tennessee broke Florida’s streak of 24 straight SEC wins, which dated back to their last conference loss in 2009 — which was also against Tennessee.

It’s been seven years since the Lady Vols defeated Florida on its home court, as the 2004 squad topped Florida in the regular season finale, then returned a week later to win again in Gainesville to capture the SEC Tournament crown.

FLORIDA DOESN’T LOSE AT HOME Florida’s loss to Tennessee was just its 21st defeat at home since Head Coach Mary Wise took over the team in 1991, and just the 52nd loss at home in program history.

By being unofficially ranked No. 26 on Sunday, Tennessee is just the second unranked team to defeat Florida in Gainesville since 1991, and the first in 17 years.

Now with 3 victories in Gainesville, no other team has more wins over the Gators at home under Coach Wise than the Lady Vols.

CAN’T MISS TELEVISION Tennessee games have aired 7 times on an ESPN network over the years and the Lady Vols are 5-2 in those matches. Overall, the team has won 12 of their last 14 televised matches.

TAMING THE TIGERS AND GATORS By topping LSU on Sept. 30 and downing Florida Sept. 25, it is the first time in school history that Tennessee has beaten both the Gators and Tigers on the road in the same season. The Lady Vols had not won in Baton Rouge since 2000, while the last UT victory in Gainesville came in 2004.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS  KENTUCKY The Kentucky volleyball team earned two more victories last weekend to improve to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in SEC play. UK has lost just one match since August. Kentucky overpowered its two opponents with UK charting an above .300 hitting clip and holding its opponents to a mere .072 percentage.

Kentucky’s defense quieted Alabama to a mere 16 kills on a -.012 hitting percentage. It marked the first time a Craig Skinner team limited its opponent to 20 or less kills since 2008. The negative hitting percentage was also the first this season for a Wildcat defense. Junior libero Stephanie Klefot led the charge for UK’s defense with an average of 4.43 digs per set to continue to set the standard for SEC defensive stalwarts. Klefot posted 31 total digs to move into fourth place on UK’s alltime career list. Sophomore Whitney Billings led the offense with back-to-back 11-kill performance on a blazing .447 hitting percentage. Freshman Lauren O’Conner continues to provide a consistent offensive hand as the Wildcats improved to 7-0 in league play when she posts eight or more kills.

 MISSISSIPPI STATE With wins in three of its last four matches, Mississippi State closes out a four-match home stand this weekend when the Bulldogs (9-8/4-4 SEC) entertain a pair of nationallyranked SEC Eastern Division teams. State takes on No. 25 Kentucky Friday in a 7 p.m. “Maroon Madness” match in Humphrey Coliseum and then tests No. 18 SECleading Tennessee on Sunday. The MSU-UK match marks MSU volleyball’s first competition in Humphrey Coliseum since the 2008 season. Senior outside hitter Caitlin Rance piled up a career-best 27 kills and moved into MSU’s career top 10 in kills in a 3-2 Sunday win over Auburn. The win helped MSU eclipse its 2010 SEC win total and earn a split of its weekend competition after bowing to Georgia 3-1 Friday night.

Rance, second in the SEC in per-set average kills (4.31) and points (4.75), notched her eighth double-double of the year and raised her career kills total to 976.

Freshman middle blocker Lainey Wyman hit .327 on the weekend with 22 kills, 22 digs and eight blocks en route to SEC Freshman of the Week honors. It is the second such honor for Wyman.

LAST SEASON VS. KENTUCKY - 9/29/10 KNOXVILLE: Playing in front of a national television audience on ESPNU, the 23rd-ranked Tennessee volleyball team made quick work of a Kentucky squad that had been ranked in the national polls, downing the Wildcats, 25-22, 25-15, 25-22, in front of 1,126 rowdy fans at TBA. Kayla Jeter led a three-pronged attack for the Lady Vols, recording a match-high 13 kills and a career-best 13 digs for the first double-double of her career. DeeDee Harrison reached double-digits in kills as well, hitting a stellar .444 with 10 putaways, in addition to blocking a match-high four Wildcat attacks - 11/24/10 LEXINGTON: The No. 21 University of Tennessee volleyball team finished off the 2010 regular season with an impressive sweep, downing a hot Kentucky team that had won six of its last seven matches, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.

Leading the Lady Vols offensively was DeeDee Harrison who hit at a blistering .529 clip with a teamhigh 11 kills and just two errors on 17 swings. Tennessee out-hit Kentucky, .210 to .095, and tallied 18 more kills, 47 to 29. The Lady Vols also out-dug the Wildcats, 55 to 41 and had nine blocks to UK’s eight.

LAST SEASON VS. MISSISSIPPI STATE - 10/15/10 KNOXVILLE: The No. 24 University of Tennessee volleyball team used a balanced and efficient offensive attack as well as a stifling defensive effort to sweep past Mississippi State, 25-16, 25-17, 25-18.

Nikki Fowler served as the offensive catalyst for the Big Orange, blasting out a match-high 13 kills while hitting at a torrid .478 clip. Kayla Jeter and Dee Harrison each added nine kills.

- 11/7/10 STARKVILLE: The 22nd-ranked University of Tennessee volleyball matched its longest winning streak of the season with its sixth consecutive victory by making quick work of Mississippi State, 2517, 25-18, 25-15.

Kayla Jeter led the way with a match-high 11 kills, in addition to tallying four blocks, three digs and an ace. DeeDee Harrison pounded out 10 putaways on just 13 swings for a stellar .615 attack average.

NATIONALLY KNOWN Kelsey Robinson has been an offensive force through 15 matches this season. Her play has caught the attention of both the Southeastern Conference and on the national level. On Monday she was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Tuesday she grabbed Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week Honors for her efforts this past weekend against Alabama and Ole Miss.

Robinson notched double-doubles in both matches this past weekend and now leads the SEC with 12th double-doubles. Versus the Rebels, Robinson recorded her second 20-20 game of the season, as she blasted 20 kills and had 20 digs. In a three-set sweep of Alabama on Friday, she registered 15 kills, 13 digs and three assists.

She also received the SEC Offensive POW accolde on Sept. 5 after her performance at the Illinois State Farm Classic. She has also earned MVP honors at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Virginia Tech Invite, along with being named to the all-tournament team at the Illinois State Farm Classic.

OFF TO A FAST START After taking care of business at home, sweeping Georgia and Auburn in straight sets, winning four straight on the road and defeating Alabama and Ole Miss this past weekend, the Tennessee Lady Vols are off to their best conference start since 2004.

A win over the Wildcats on Wednesday would give the Lady Vols a 9-0 mark in league play, which would be the best SEC start in school history.

Sophomore Kelsey Robinson has been tremendous through 15 matches, producing 10 performances of at least 20 kills so far this season.

In nine of those matches, she has also recorded a double-double. (The list of 20 kills & doubles doubles is in the box on the right.)

No Lady Vol had as many 20-kill matches in all of 2010. All-American Nikki Fowler reached the mark four times last year to lead the team.

Meanwhile, Robinson has already surpassed her double-double total from last season, when she had five matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs.

Perhaps not suprisingly, she is a national leader offensively. She leads the conference and ranks 11th nationally in kills per set (4.69). She also ranks sixth in Division I in points per set (5.49).

Freshman Mary Pollmiller’s first year in Orange and White is off to a fantastic start. Because of injuries at the setter position, she has played all but a handful of points. Her average of average of 11.72 assists per set is the best in the SEC and also ranks eighth nationally.

She has nine matches of at least 50 assists this season, the last one coming in the Lady Vols’ five-set comeback win against Ole Miss. This season she has also produced four double-doubles, registering 50 or more assists in three of those performances.

RECOGNIZING THE HELP For the second time in less than a month, Mary Pollmiller was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3 for her efforts at LSU and Arkansas. Against the Tigers and Razorbacks, Pollmiller had a hand in 80 percent of the kills, tallying 92 of Tennessee’s 102 assists and added five kills of her own.

She first earned SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept.

12 following her outstanding setting performance in Blacksburg, Va. She is one of just two freshmen currently in the SEC top 10 in assists per set, as she leads the league in assists, averaging 11.72 assists per set.

LADY VOL DUO GETS REWARDED For the first time since Oct. 20, 2008, a pair of Lady Vols in junior DeeDee Harrison and sophomore Carly Sahagian were bestowed conference honors.

On Sept. 26. Carly Sahagian was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Harrison earned the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Sahagian was terrific against South Carolina and Florida, tallying 31 kills, 26 digs, three blocks and two services aces. She recorded double-doubles in both of those matches, and blasted a career-high 19 kills at UF. Against USC and UF, Harrison was a standout allaround performer. She blocked a total of 12 attacks, with an average of 1.33 blocks per set and set careerhighs in blocks assists and total blocks against the Gamecocks. Offensively, she notched double-digits in kills in both matches.

TOP 25 VOLLEYBALL CROWDS The Lady Vols had 10 of their top 25 highest crowds during the 2010 season, including a seasonhigh 1,431 against Florida on Sept. 19.

Twenty-one of Tennessee’s top 25 highest crowds have come in the four years since Thompson-Boling Arena became the team’s primary venue.

After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its fourth year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River.

Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 41-7 in home matches, including a perfect 5-0 this season.  Record at Thompson-Boling Since 2008

With an average home attendance of 983 in 2010, the Lady Vols demolished the previous school record of 772 set the year before. UT also finished with a program record for total home attendance with 13,761 fans.

Through five matches this year, Tennessee is almost two-thirds of the way to match its 2008 total.

To the casual observer, the Lady Vols’ court looks very much the same as always with the checkerboard orange and white beyond each baseline, but the playing surface is brand new.

The court was assembled for the first time in Thompson-Boling Arena last week and is slightly elevated off the ground, which makes for more spring on the court. The Lady Vols’ new practice court is also designed this way.

For their Saturday-night match against Maryland to wrap up the Lady Vol Classic, an announced crowd 1,938 fans were in attendance to see the five-set thriller, marking the second-highest attendance in program history.

The record crowd of 3,311 against Georgia in 2005 happened right before a basketball game.
