OPPONENTS AT A QUICK GLANCE

Coming off a win at Louisville and a victory over Mississippi State at home this past week, the Lady Vols hit the road one last time during the regular season, as the team travels to Oxford, Miss., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for matches against Ole Miss and Alabama. Tennessee has been on a roll, winning sevenstraight matches, including a victory over 13th-ranked Florida in four sets on Oct. 28. After this weeekend, UT will be at home for its final three Southeastern Conference matches. Last year, Tennessee won all but two home SEC matches in the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena.

Friday’s opponent, Ole Miss, is the only SEC team this season to take the Lady Vols to a fifth set at Thompson-Boling Arena. Ole Miss has won four of its last five matches, two of which came on the road. The Tide have dropped three in a row entering Friday’s match against Kentucky. Alabama has been much better at home this year (7-5), as the squad has four sweeps at Foster Auditorium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT The No. 15 University of Tennessee Lady Vol volleyball team notched a pair of victories this past week over Louisville and Mississippi State to improve to 22-3 overall and 14-1 in conference play. Against the Cardinals, UT had six players hit .286 or better, as juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie Cikra, sophomore Kelsey Robinson and freshmen Tiffany Baker, Shelayn Kolosky and Mary Pollmiller accounted for all of UT’s 52 kills. As a team, the Big Orange hit .374 against U of L and tied a season-high of 49 assists in a four set match. Four days later, the Lady Vols had four players reach double digits in kills and four players have 10 or more digs versus MSU. Robinson and Cikra each tallied 15 kills to lead the way, while Baker blasted 11 kills and Harrison recorded 10. The only other time this season that four players reached double digits in kills came on Sept. 25 at Florida. Baker and Pollmiller each had double-doubles againts State, as Baker dug up 10, while Pollmiller tallied 45 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Ellen Mullins and freshman Nikki Brice limited the Bulldog offense, as they had 15 and 11 digs, respectively.

THE SEC (HISTORICALLY SPEAKING) Tennessee has won at least 15 SEC matches each of the last three seasons leading up to 2011, finishing with 15 in 2008 and 2010 and 16 in 2009. Rob Patrick is 158-91 in his career in the SEC. In 13 of his 15 seasons, he led the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record against the conference. In 2004, Tennessee stormed through the league with a 15-1 record, tying for first in the SEC and winning the SEC Tournament a week later.

PATRICK’S MILESTONE WINS

ROB PATRICK /// HEAD COACH Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 15 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in seven of the last nine campaigns. Prior

to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988. Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively. During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

In July, former Iona College head coach Alan Edwards joined the UT staff as the team’s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. “I am very excited about adding Alan to our coaching staff,” Patrick said. “He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, both as a head coach and assistant coach from a number of Division-I programs, and is someone who I feel will be able to assimilate himself into our team very quickly.” Edwards was most recently the head coach at Iona for the past five seasons, where he led the Gaels to a 75-79 overall record and four appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. During his time in New Rochelle, Edwards mentored one of the top defensive players in NCAA history in Allison Neiters. One of the top volleyball performers in Iona College and MAAC history, she shattered the Iona and conference career record for digs with 2,682, the fifth highest all-time total in the NCAA. Neiters was named the 2007 and 2008 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and 2009 MAAC Libero of the Year, as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week 17 times during her career. She was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Honor Roll member, two-time CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict selection and earned Iona’s Academic Merit Award for holding a 3.50 or above grade point average.

After a standout career at Mississippi State as a player and coaching the past three seasons as an assistant at ETSU, Rachel Cooper joined the Tenneessee staff in May. Prior to her time as an assistant coach at ETSU, Cooper served as a graduate assistant with the Buccaneers, where she assisted in recruiting and coordinated team travel and community service. “The thing that most impresses me about Rachel is her work ethic,” Patrick said. “I’ve gotten to know her in recent years when she has come to work our camps and I am very excited that we have been able to add her to our coaching staff. She has experience in recruiting and understands the day-to-day responsibilities involved with running a high-level volleyball program. “Rachel was also an outstanding player in the SEC and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in our conference. Her personality is very engaging and inviting, and I expect that our players will be able to easily relate to her.” A Roscoe, Ill., native, Cooper was a four-year letter winner and starting outside hitter for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. A two-year captain and team Most Valuable Player, Cooper was also the first Bulldog athlete ever named SEC Player of the Week. She finished her career third all-time in kills with 1,405.

WHO’S BACK? Tennessee is returning three starters and a libero from last year’s roster: juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie Cikra, sophomore Kelsey Robinson and sophomore libero Ellen Mullins. Robinson was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection in her first season with the Lady Vols at outside hitter. Additional returners include sophomore setter Kylann Scheidt, senior setter Kelsey Mahoney and sophomore outside hitter Carly Sahagian.

WHO’S NEW? For one, most of the coaching staff is new. Patrick added two new assistants in the offseason: Alan Edwards, who was head coach at Iona; and Rachel Cooper, who was as an assistant at East Tennessee State. On the court, the Lady Vols feature plenty of new faces with the eighth-ranked recruiting class in the country. JETER OUT FOR SEASON Senior leader Kayla Jeter will miss the entire 2011 season with a knee injury, associate athletics director for sports medicine Jenny Moshak reported. Jeter suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee at team practice Aug. 19. Recovery time is estimated between six and nine months.

Jeter enjoyed her best season as a junior in 2010, earning first-team All-SEC and AVCA All-America honorable mention honors. The Solon, Ohio, native ranked second on the squad with 340 kills (2.98/set) and led UT with 19 solo blocks.

SEC COACHES’ SURVEY SAYS The Southeastern Conference coaches selected Tennessee to finish second in the Eastern Division, and they picked up two votes to win the SEC regularseason title. LADY VOLS IN THE RANKINGS Coming off wins this past week at Louisville and at home versus Miss. State, UT moved up one spot to No. 15 in the most recent AVCA coaching poll after receiving 625 points. The squad returned to the top 25 on Sept. 26, as it was ranked 23rd following wins over South Carolina and No. 6 Florida on the road. Despite going 3-0 to start the season, the Big Orange dropped out of the poll after week one.

PAST & PRESENT NOW WE’RE ROLLING Coming off a heartbreaking loss at No. 25 Kentucky in a five-set thriller on Oct. 12, the Wildcats ended the Lady Vols 11-match winning streak. However, since that match, the Lady Vols have won seven-straight matches, and are in sole possesion of first place in the SEC standings. The UK loss ended UT’s streak of 11 straight SEC wins, which dated back to last season. This season, the 8-0 start by the Big Orange in league play tied for the best conference start in UT history.

SHE CAN DIG IT! Sophomore libero Ellen Mullins continues to be a force in the back row for the Lady Vols. Against UK, she dug a career-high 31 balls, which is the secondmost in an SEC match this season. On the season, she ranks fifth in the conference with an average of 3.86 digs per set. Mullins bettered her previous career high by 11, as she notched 20 digs against Dayton. Her 31 digs is the fifth most digs by an SEC player this year, and just the 4th SEC player to reach the 30 dig mark and the 10th most by a Lady Vol in program history.

MR. 300 With a sweep over Georgia in the Southeastern Conference opener on Sept. 16, Tennessee Lady Vol head coach Rob Patrick recorded his 300th career win, all of which have come at UT. Patrick now has the highest winning percentage of any UT volleybal coach (.672), along with the most victories (314).

THE ORIGINAL ORANGE PANTS When UT head football coach Derek Dooley headed out of the Neyland Stadium tunnel in orange pants for the season-opener against Montana, he created a buzz around Knoxville, and even nationally. However, what some may not know is that Lady Vol head volleyball coach Rob Patrick had already donned the orange pants a year ago against Kentucky on Sept. 30, 2010. The match was televised on ESPNU . The Lady Vols swept the Wildcats in that match and Patrick’s orange pants record now stands at 2-1.

CAN’T MISS TELEVISION Tennessee games have aired 8 times on an ESPN network over the years and the Lady Vols are 5-3 in those matches. Overall, the team has won 12 of their last 15 televised matches. The Lady Vols are slated to appear on television at least one more time this season, when the team hosts LSU on Nov. 20 in a match that will be broadcasted by CSS.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS  OLE MISS Ole Miss split a pair of matches on the road last week, downing South Carolina 3-0 on Friday before falling to the nationally ranked Florida 3-0 on Sunday. Juniors Allegra Wells and Whitney Craven helped lead the Rebels to the win on the weekend with Wells hitting .533 and putting down nine kills against the Gamecocks to go along with nine kills, 12 digs and a .421 performance from Craven. Senior middle blocker Regina Thomas also came up with solid numbers against the Gamecocks, putting down seven kills and eight blocks in the win. Thomas continues to lead the Southeastern Conference in two statistical categories, with a .378 hitting percentage and 1.12 blocks per set. Ole Miss will return to action this weekend with a pair of matches against top-20 teams with No. 15 Tennessee and No. 18 Kentucky coming to town.

 ALABAMA Alabama dropped to 11-16 overall and 4-12 in Southeastern Conference play, following back-toback three-set road losses to No. 17 Florida and South Carolina. Alabama averaged 10.83 kills per set, while hitting .124 in the two matches. Kayla Fitterer finished the weekend with 21 kills and 17 digs to average 3.50 kills and 2.83 digs per set. Fitterer notched her 13th double-double of the season, 25th of her career, when she had 12 kills and 11 digs against South Carolina. Fitterer leads the team with 355 kills (4.08 kps), to rank third in the SEC and 28th in the country. Her 395.5 points and 4.55 points per set are also third in the conference. Andrea McQuaid had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs against South Carolina on Sunday, bringing her team-leading total to 15 for the season. McQuaid ranks second in the SEC in double-doubles. She was second on the team with 19 kills in the two matches, averaging 3.17 kills per set with a .192 hitting percentage. She also had a team-best 3.50 digs per set for the weekend. Stephanie Riley played all six rotations on the weekend and totaled 56 of the Tide’s 60 assists. Riley averaged 9.33 assists per set, with 26 assists against Florida and a season-high 30 assists against South Carolina.

WE DON’T MESS AROUND By notching their 20th win in just the 23rd match of the year versus South Carolina on Sunday, the Lady Vols have made it to the 20 win milestone in the third fastest amount of time in Tennessee history. The 1973 team won their first 20 in a row, while the 2004 squad reached 20 wins in 22 matches.

HOME SWEET HOME The Lady Vols have had a lot of success this season, no matter what town or venue they are playing in. However, the Lady Vols have protected their home court, as the team is a perfect 10-0 in matches played in Thompson-Boling Arena this year. Since the start of SEC play, UT has only dropped four sets in the friendly confines of TBA.

ABOVE .500 AGAIN By winning 14 of its first 15 conference matches this year, Tennessee is assured of having an SEC record of above .500. Head Coach Rob Patrick has now lead the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record in 13 of his 15 seasons at Rocky Top.

OLE MISS - 10/1/10 KNOXVILLE: The No. 23 University of Tennessee volleyball team made quick work of a conference opponent, sweeping past Ole Miss in straight sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22, at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Big Orange was led by Nikki Fowler, who registered her 45th career double-double with 10 kills on .375 hitting with a team-high 12 digs. Kayla Jeter hit at a .353 clip with a match-high 16 kills, nine digs and two blocks. - 11/21/10 OXFORD: Propelled by the second double-double of Kayla Jeter’s career, the No. 21 University of Tennessee volleyball team fought off a gritty Ole Miss squad playing its final match of the regular season, downing the Rebels in four sets, 25-15, 1325, 25-20, 25-20. Jeter paced the Big Orange attack, smashing out a team-high 13 kills on 39 swings. The Solon, Ohio, native also added 10 digs, a pair of blocks, an assist and a service ace to UT’s winning effort.

LAST SEASON VS. ALABAMA 10/17/10 KNOXVILLE: The 24th-ranked University of Tennessee volleyball team finished off the first half of its conference schedule with a sweep, downing Alabama, 25-17, 25-21, 26-24, in front of 1,103 Orange and White faithful, which was the ninthlargest crowd in school history at Thompson-Boling Arena. Leslie Cikra finished second on the team with nine putaways, while hitting at a solid .412 clip and blocking three Alabama attacks. Just behind her was fellow classmate DeeDee Harrison with a trio of blocks to go along with eight kills and a .400 attack average. - 11/5/10 TUSCALOOSA: The No. 22 University of Tennessee volleyball team crossed the 20-win threshold for the third straight season and 18th time in school history, as it picked up a 25-17, 25-22, 2522, sweep over Alabama. UT had six different players record at least four kills, as Robinson and Cikra each tallied nine.

TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE

Sophomore Kelsey Robinson has been tremendous through 25 matches, producing 10 performances of at least 20 kills so far this season. In nine of those matches, she has also recorded a double-double. (The list of double-doubles is in the box on the right.) No Lady Vol had as many 20-kill matches in all of 2010. All-American Nikki Fowler reached the mark four times last year to lead the team. Meanwhile, Robinson has already surpassed her double-double total from last season, when she had five matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs. Perhaps not suprisingly, she is a national leader offensively. She leads the conference and ranks 19th nationally in kills per set (4.43). She also ranks 15th in Division I in points per set (5.11).

When a pair of Lady Vols in junior DeeDee Harrison and sophomore Carly Sahagian were bestowed conference honors on Sept. 26, it marked the first time since Oct. 20, 2008, that multiple Lady Vols were recognized by the SEC in the same week. That feat was accomplished again on Oct. 31, as as freshman Tiffany Baker was tabbed the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week., while classmate Mary Pollmiller earned Freshman of the Week honors. In Sept, Sahagian was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Harrison earned the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Sahagian recording double-doubles in both matches versus Florida and South Carolina, including blasting a career-high 19 kills at UF. Harrison was a standout all-around performer, blocking a total of 12 attacks, with an average of 1.33 blocks per set. She als set career-highs in blocks assists and total blocks at USC. Offensively, she also notched double-digits in kills in both matches Baker became the sixth different Lady Vol this season to earn an SEC accolade. By having six different student-athletes be recognized, it is the most in UT history and ties for the most in SEC history (UF also had six players earn honors in 2007). Baker had double-doubles in each match and increased her season averages in almost every statistical category. Pollmiller had 41 assists in a sweep of South Carolina, aiding UT to a season-high .446 hitting percentage versus the Gamecocks.

With Harrison and Sahagian earning conference honors in the same week, and Baker and Pollmiller repeating that accomplishment, Tennessee is the only team this season to have multiple players earn SEC accolades in the same week. The last time the feat happened came in the final week of 2010, as Alabama’s Mary Catherine Aune and Brianne Vande Griend grabbed Freshman and Defensive POW honors.

NIFTY 50 Freshman Mary Pollmiller’s first year in Orange and White is off to a fantastic start. Because of injuries at the setter position, she has played all but a handful of points. Her average of 11.73 assists per set is the second-best in the SEC and also ranks ninth nationally. She has 11 matches of at least 50 assists this season, the last one coming in a 3-1 Lady Vol victory over Georgia. This season she has also produced five double-doubles, registering 50 or more assists in three of those performances.

TAMING THE TIGERS AND GATORS By topping LSU on Sept. 30 and downing Florida Sept. 25, it is the first time in school history that Tennessee has beaten both the Gators and Tigers on the road in the same season. The Lady Vols had not won in Baton Rouge since 2000, while the last UT victory in Gainesville came in 2004.

NATIONALLY KNOWN Kelsey Robinson has been an offensive force this season, as her play has caught the attention of both the SEC and on the national level. On Oct. 10 she was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while a day later she grabbed Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week Honors for her efforts against Alabama and Ole Miss. Robinson notched double-doubles in both matches versus the Rebels and Crimson Tide and leads the SEC with 17 double-doubles. Versus the Rebels, Robinson recorded her second 20-20 game of the season, as she blasted 20 kills and had 20 digs. In a three-set sweep of Alabama, she registered 15 kills, 13 digs and three assists. She also received the SEC Offensive POW accolde on Sept. 5 after her performance at the Illinois State Farm Classic. She has also earned MVP honors at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Virginia Tech Invite, along with being named to the all-tournament team at the Illinois State Farm Classic.

For her second time in the span of less than a month, Mary Pollmiller was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3 for her efforts at LSU and Arkansas. Against the Tigers and Razorbacks, Pollmiller had a hand in 80 percent of the kills, tallying 92 of Tennessee’s 102 assists and added five kills of her own. She first earned SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 12 following her outstanding setting performance in Blacksburg, Va. She is one of just two freshmen currently in the SEC top 10 in assists per set, as she ranks second in the league, averaging 11.73 assists per set.

After grabbing Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31, freshman Tiffany Baker picked up a national accolade a day later, as CVU.com (College Volleyball Update) named her it’s National Player of the Week. Baker lead the Lady Vols to a pair of victories against Florida and South Carolina, tallying doubledoubles in each match. She averaged 4.00 kills per set, hit at a clip of .429, dug up 3.29 balls per set and had a total of six total blocks.

24 NO MORE!

After setting a career-high in digs and being a consistent presence in the Lady Vol back row, the Southeastern Conference announced that Tennessee sophomore libero Ellen Mullins has been named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 24. It was the first time the Nashville native has been recognized by the SEC, as she averaged a team-best 5.75 digs per set this weekend on the road against Kentucky and Mississippi State. Against UK, the Nashville, native set a career-high in digs with 31, which ranks second all time in UT history during the 25-point rally scoring era, and is the most digs by any SEC player in a conference match this season.

The number 24 may be just a number to some, but for the Tennesseee Lady Vol volleyball team, it is a significant number in both matches versus Florida this season. Most recently, in a 3-1 win over UF at home, the Big Orange snapped Florida’s streak of winning 24 consecutive sets. The Gators had not dropped a set prior to UT traveling to Gainesville earlier this season and beating UF in five. By downing the No. 6 Gators on Sept. 25, Tennessee broke Florida’s streak of 24 straight SEC wins, which dated back to their last conference loss in 2009 — which was also against Tennessee. It’s been seven years since the Lady Vols defeated Florida on its home court, as the 2004 squad topped Florida in the regular season finale, then returned a week later to win again in Gainesville to capture the SEC Tournament crown.

FLORIDA DOESN’T LOSE AT HOME Florida’s loss to Tennessee was just its 21st defeat at home since Head Coach Mary Wise took over the team in 1991, and just the 52nd loss at home in program history. By being unofficially ranked No. 26 on Sept. 25, UT is just the second unranked team to defeat Florida in Gainesville since 1991, and the first in 17 years. Now with three victories in Gainesville, no other team has more wins over the Gators at home under Coach Wise than the Lady Vols. DOMINATING ‘D’ The Tennessee defense has been terrific as of late, highlighted by the match at home versus Florida and the road contest versus Mississippi State. Against the Gators, the Big Orange defense limited to UF to a mere .160 hitting percentage, as it marked the first time on the season UF was outhit (.175-.160). At the time, Florida was leading the conference and the nation with a clip of .314. At State on Oct. 16, the team held the Bulldogs to a .025 team hitting percentage. In the match, the highest MSU hit in any set was at .056, which came in the second frame. MSU’s hitting percentage of .025 is the 12th lowest average the Big Orange has held a team to since 2001.

STARTING STRONG The Lady Vols finished off the first half of their SEC double round-robin schedule in first place with a 9-1 mark, which is their best record at the half way point since the conference went to the format in 2006. The next best start came in 2009, as that team went 8-2 in its first 10 against conference opponents. The team went 7-3 last season and in 2006.

RECORD WATCH Through 25 matches this season, two Tennnessee records during the 25-point rally scoring era have been broken, which dates back to 2008. Freshman Mary Pollmiller shattered the total assists record, as the Littleton, Colo., native currently has 1,138 assists on the year. Current Lady Vol Kelsey Mahoney previously held the record, as she tallied 842 helpers in 2009. Outside hitter Kelsey Robinson is just 29 kills short of breaking the kills record held by Nikki Fowler, as she has 430 this year. Her 37 service aces this season is also Lady Vol record. In digs, sophomore Ellen Mullins has dug up 374 balls this season, which ranks fouth. Junior DeeDee Harrison is the team leader in blocks, as she has 101 putbacks in 2011, which ranks sixth.

TOP 25 VOLLEYBALL CROWDS The Lady Vols had six of their top 25 highest crowds during the 2011 season, including a seasonhigh 2,012 against Florida on Oct. 28. Twenty-two of Tennessee’s top 25 highest crowds have come in the four years since Thompson-Boling Arena became the team’s primary venue.

After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its fourth year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River. Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 46-7 in home matches, including a perfect 10-0 this season.  Record at Thompson-Boling Since 2008

With an average home attendance of 983 in 2010, the Lady Vols demolished the previous school record of 772 set the year before. UT also finished with a program record for total home attendance with 13,761 fans. Through 10 matches this year, Tennessee is on pace to shatter its 2010 overall total and average. Three of the four top crowds in UT history have been in this season.

NEW COURT To the casual observer, the Lady Vols’ court looks very much the same as always with the checkerboard orange and white beyond each baseline, but the playing surface is brand new. The court was assembled for the first time in Thompson-Boling Arena last week and is slightly elevated off the ground, which makes for more spring on the court. The Lady Vols’ new practice court is also designed this way.

RECORD SETTER For their Friday-night match against No. 13 Florida on Oct. 28, an announced crowd 2,012 fans were in attendance to see UT win in four sets, marking the second-highest attendance in program history. The record crowd of 3,311 against Georgia in 2005 happened right before a basketball game.
