Big Orange Slices... The All-Time Series Against Ole Miss Tennessee leads its all-time series against Ole Miss by a commanding 33-7 margin, including a 15-1 mark in Knoxville. Under the guidance of Co-Head Coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly, the Big Orange holds a 23-5 record against the Rebels and have won the last five meetings between the two teams. Last season in Oxford, Miss., Tennessee swept a three-contest set from UM by scores of 7-1, 10-3 and 9-1 (5 inn.). The finale victory was extra special for the Big Orange because it marked Ralph Weekly’s 1000th career triumph over a then 24-year coaching career. Lauren Gibson paced the Lady Vol offense during the series, hitting a team-high .556 overall (5-for-9) with a triple and four RBIs, while Ellen Renfroe was one of three UT pitchers to earn a win from the circle (1-0, 0.00 ERA), working a team-best 11.0 innings while striking out 17 and allowing just a .150 opposing batting average. There’s Just Something About the Fifth Inning The Lady Vol offense really seems to enjoy the fifth inning in 2012. Tennessee has put up 60 RUNS DURING THE FRAME this season and has sent at least nine batters to the plate during the fifth on six different occasions. Back on Feb. 9 against UCSB, nine Lady Vols went to the dish in totaling three runs, while on March 16 at Arkansas nine more visited the batter’s box in registering five tallies. UT dug itself out of 2-0 deficits against both Radford (April 10) and #22/21 LSU (April 15) in the fifth by sending 13 (eight-run inning vs. RU) and 11 batters (five-run inning vs. LSU) to the plate, respectively. During the series at South Carolina, the Big Orange used a six-run fifth-inning outburst in rolling to an 8-0 (5 inn.) rout in the opener, and totaled four tallies during the fifth frame of the finale to sweep the series, 6-3. Tennessee has totaled 31 of its 77 total runs (40%) over its current 14-game winning streak during the fifth inning.
