MEMPHIS RECAP

¢ The Vols made a furious comeback in the second half, but were unable to overcome a 21-point deficit and fell to Memphis 85-80 before 19,535 Friday at Thompson-Boling Arena. ¢ Memphis was on fire from floor most of the night as the Tigers shot 56.4 while the Vols (8-4) battled to cut the deficit to just four with less than a minute left. But the Vols were unable to overcome the steep margin. ¢ Jordan McRae had his best game of the season and tallied a career-best 26. He was one of four scorers in double-figures. Josh Richardson also had a career-high with 20 points and tied his career high with nine boards. ¢ Kenny Hall had his third-career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jarnell Stokes added 11 points and nine rebounds. ¢ Down by as many as 21 with 14:04 left in regulation, the Vols mounted a comeback. McRae canned back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a Richardson jumper to cut the deficit to 13 at 6249 with 10:38 left. McRae’s fourth 3-pointer of the half — with 9:20 left — cut the margin to 10,

It was also the Vols’ first regular-season home loss in 13 contests dating to last season. ¢ Tennessee debuted new adidas orange-on-orange uniforms for its “Orange-Out.” It was just the fifth time the Vols wore orange at TBA. ¢ Joe Jackson led Memphis with 20 points while Adonis Thomas added 18. ¢ The Tigers’ 11 blocks were an arena record for a UT opponent.

LAST TIME vs OLE MISS...

¢ After Skylar McBee sent the game to OT with 2.1 seconds left in regulation, Ole Miss withstood the Vols for a 77-72 overtime victory in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals on March 9, 2012. The game was never separated by more than two possessions until the final minutes of overtime. ¢ UT lost for just the second time in 10 games. ¢ McBee, who struggled early, was the key cog in the Vols’ offense down the stretch as he finished with 15 points (5-of-11 from 3-point range).

Freshman Jarnell Stokes grabbed 11 rebounds for his fourth double-figure rebounding game of the season before fouling out in overtime. ¢ Maymon’s 17 rebounds were the second-most by a Vol all-time in the SEC Tournament, behind Steve Hamer’s SEC Tourney record 21 set in 1996. ¢ Ole Miss was led by Terrance Henry, who tallied 19 points and had six rebounds. Jarvis Summers scored 17 points for the Rebels, and Reginald Buckner had 14 points and nine rebounds.

VOLS SECOND IN SEC WINS OVER LAST SEVEN SEASONS ¢ In league play, Tennessee is the SEC’s secondwinningest basketball program over the last seven years, dating to the 2005-06 season. ¢ Tennessee’s 75 SEC regular-season wins during that span are second only to Kentucky (78). ¢ Rounding out the top five is Florida (72), Vanderbilt (66) and Mississippi State (60).

MAYMON REDSHIRTING

¢ It was announced on Jan. 6 that All-SEC forward Jeronne Maymon is redshirting this season due to a left knee injury. ¢ Tennessee’s team MVP last season and a preseason All-SEC first-team selection (coaches), Maymon had yet to practice this season when the announcement was made. In October, he suffered a setback in his rehab from offseason surgery. ¢ Maymon began his college career at Marquette but transferred to UT after one semester. He will be a fifth-year senior in 2013-14.

UT went 2-2 during that stretch, while its opponents averaged 48.3 ppg. ¢ In 1995-96, UT went 3-1 during a similar fourgame streak, and the Big Orange also put together a four-game streak in 1985-86 while going 4-0.

¢ Tennessee fell at No. 20 Georgetown 37-36 Nov. 30 in the SEC/Big East Challenge. It was a game that was noteworthy for several reasons. ¢ The game was the lowest combined score in a UT game since the Vols’ 11-6 win over Temple on Dec. 15, 1973. That was the last time the Vols held a Division I opponent to as few as 37 points. ¢ UT’s 37 points surredered also marked the program’s best defensive scoring effort since holding Ohio Northern to 33 points in a 40-33 win on Nov. 25, 1983. ¢ The Vols held Georgetown scoreless for the final 4:09 in regulation. ¢ The Vols split into two groups on the morning of Jan. 2 to spread some New Year’s cheer. ¢ Half the team made a surprise visit to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, taking time to visit and play with kids. ¢ The other half of the team visited Patricia Neal Rehab Center to visit with patients there.

WINGS DOMINANT LAST THREE GAMES ¢ In Tennessee’s last three games, starting 3-man Josh Richardson and top reserve Jordan McRae have combined to average 30.7 ppg. ¢ Against Memphis last Friday, both players posted career-highs for scoring, as McRae scored 26 and Richardson added 20. ¢ During a 4:58 stretch in the second half vs. Memphis, the duo scored 17 straight points for UT. ¢ Richardson is shooting .643 from the field over the last three games while also averaging 7.0 rpg. ¢ The two share an apartment. ¢ Just as he did during the second half of last season, junior wing Jordan McRae provided an offensive boost off the bench through 12 games for Tennessee (he has started one game when Kenny Hall was out with an injury). ¢ McRae ranks second on the team with 11.6 points per game, and he is shooting a team-best .333 (17-for-51) from 3-point range. ¢ The Midway, Ga., native came off the bench to score in double figures in six of UT’s last 14 games last season.

¢ After averaging 2.9 points per game as a true freshman last year, guard Josh Richardson is averaging 8.4 ppg through UT’s first 12 games. ¢ Now a starter on the wing, Richardson has scored in double figures five times this season.

SUMMER VACATION: VOLS IN ITALY ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE ¢ A total of 17 Tennessee men’s basketball players have earned their UT degree over the last four years. ¢ Those players are: Josh Bone, Quinn Cannington, Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism, John Fields, Melvin Goins, Tony Harris, Michael Hubert, Justin Jackson, Chris Lofton, Steven Pearl, J.P. Prince, Tyler Summitt, Cameron Tatum, C.J. Watson, Tanner Wild and Renaldo Woolridge. ¢ Harris, Lofton and Watson completed their degrees using Tennessee’s “Renewing Academic Commitment” (RAC) program. ¢ The RAC Program enables former studentathletes who left school early to turn pro in their respective sport return to school in the off-season to work toward their degree requirements while still having access to the resources available to current student-athletes (such as the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center, tutors, etc).

EMPHASIS OF THE DAY ¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.” ¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on basketball-specific skills or strategy, as Martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day. ¢ Martin typically begins by reading that day’s “emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words. ¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy Webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys.

It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’ ¢ Added Webster: “If the guys are having a hard time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start. ¢ A few examples:  My desire is that the people who know me the best respect me the most. Success is not measured by how many people I coach or how many games I win; success is living life with such authentic integrity that those who know me best actually respect me the most.  When someone does well, we all do well. When someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake.

Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other.  When we are reliable, others know that they can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.

Cuonzo Martin took the Tennessee basketball team on a 10-day, four-game exhibition tour of Italy Aug. 5-15. The tour began in Rome and progressed north through Florence, Pisa and The Republic of San Marino before concluding in Como.

The Volunteers plowed through each of their four exhibition opponents en route to a perfect 4-0 record. The competition included All-Star Italy (a collection of Italian professional players), the Lithuanian second-division champion BC Atletas, BC Zeta Golubovci from Montenegro and Amici del Campetto.

BC Atletas provided the biggest test for Tennessee — the Lithuanian pros defeated Georgia just days before facing the Vols. Atletas also added a victory over Purdue two days after playing UT. Tennessee handed BC Atletas an 82-68 defeat in what would prove to be the Vols’ lowest-scoring game of the tour.

In total, the Big Orange boasted an average margin of victory of 49.3 points in its four outings. Twice, in a display of sportsmanship, the Vols requested a running clock during the second half.

In an effort to make the trip an educational opportunity for a team with numerous players who had never traveled abroad, Martin called upon UT professor Dr. Robert Bast, Cuonzo Martin (second from left) and who crafted a three-credit course (History 491) appropriately members of his staff at the Leaning Tower named “Renaissance Men.” The class met for several on-cam- of Pisa. pus lectures before the trip, preparing the student-athletes for the culture, cities and landmarks they would encounter once they stepped foot on Italian soil.

Highlights of the trip included visits to the Roman Colosseum, the ruins of the Roman Forum, Vatican City — including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel — Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David in Florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the three towers of San Marino and a cruise on Lake Como (the first-ever boat ride for four team members).

 THOMPSON-BOLING ARENA BY THE NUMBERS Thompson-Boling Arena is hosting its 26th season in 2012-13. The Vols have won nearly 75 percent of their games in Thompson-Boling Arena and have ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance 11 times, including an active streak of seven consecutive seasons in which UT has ranked in the top five.

$40 MILLION COMMITMENT Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top

The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign.

Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena.

The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities.

The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room.

The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs.

And new to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.

It’s so much MORE than just winning ballgames.

¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he relies on Marco Harris, the basketball team’s student-athlete welfare coordinator, to conduct yearround seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life. ¢ Harris was a two-sport athlete in college (basketball and baseball), and he also is a successful private business owner, operating a pair of Subway franchises. ¢ Harris regularly schedules guest speakers and team seminars focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more. ¢ Harris also oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT Medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), Race for the Cure and several other events.

PERSONAL BRANDING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

¢ Rather than banning his players from using various social media services, Cuonzo Martin believes in educating them on how to effectively use social media as a positive personal branding tool.
