REBOUNDING RECORDS REVOLUTION

• The Vols’ 2013-14 roster features 15 players (13 scholarship student-athletes) representing nine states.

• Five Vols hail from the state of Tennessee, while three are from Georgia.

• Tennessee has four seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen.

• The roster includes 11 guards, two forwards, one combo guard/ forward and one center.

• Five Vols stand 6-5 or shorter, and 10 are 6-6 or taller.

Tennessee’s frontcourt tandem of Jeronne Maymon and Jarnell Stokes is rewriting Tennessee’s offensive rebounding records.

• Stokes enters this season averaging 3.64 orpg during his career, while Maymon has a UT career average of 2.51 orpg. If their career averages improve or stand firm, they would rank first and second, respectively, on UT’s all-time list. Former Vol C.J. Black currently stands atop Tennessee’s career list with 2.47 orpg from 1996-2000.

• Since offensive rebounding statistics have been recorded (199697) there have been only two players in Tennessee history to grab 10 or more offensive boards in a single game. Stokes hauled in 12 last season vs. Mercer, and Maymon totaled 10 against Ole Miss in the 2012 SEC Tournament.

• Stokes averaged 4.18 orpg as a sophomore last season. That is the best single-season mark in program history.

ANNIVERSARIES The 2013-14 season marks a few significant anniversaries related to Tennessee basketball.

• The 2013-14 season marks the 35th anniversary of Tennessee’s last SEC Tournament championship. Head coach Don DeVoe led the Vols to wins over Auburn and then Kentucky in Birmingham, Ala., in March 1979.

• Jan. 21, 2014, is the 25th anniversary of the largest home crowd in Tennessee basketball history. On Jan. 21, 1989, a record crowd of 25,610 packed Thompson-Boling Arena to see the Vols host rival Kentucky (the Wildcats won, 66-65).

• This season also marks the 10th anniversary of Scooter McFadgon setting a school record for single-season free-throw percentage, as he shot .912 (134 of 147) from the stripe in 2003-04.

• And 20 years ago, LaMarcus Golden set the school record for steals per game (2.88 in 1993-94).

VOLS SEEKING NINTH STRAIGHT SEASON OF TOP-SIX ATTENDANCE

BACK-TO-BACK FIBA GOLDS FOR STOKES Junior power forward Jarnell Stokes has led a USA Basketball national team to a FIBA gold medal in international competition each of the last two summers.

• In the summer of 2013, Stokes was a starter on the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team, which went 9-0 en route to the gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic.

• In the summer of 2012, Stokes starred for the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team, which captured gold medal at FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil.

• Stokes joins former All-Americans and NBA standouts Ernie Grunfeld and Allan Houston as the only Vols ever to win multiple gold medals in sanctioned international competition.

The Vols finished sixth nationally in average regular-season home attendance last year, drawing 17,395 fans per game.

MARTIN’S VOLS HAVE BEATEN THEM ALL Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin joins Kentucky’s John Calipari as the only coaches in the SEC who have defeated every team in the league at least once over the last two seasons. Martin also has posted triumphs over the defending national champs for two straight years (UConn and Kentucky).

FRESH FACES AT POINT GUARD Tennessee has two true point guards on scholarship, and neither has suited up for the Big Orange prior to this season.

• Senior transfer Antonio Barton spent the previous three years sharing time at the point guard spot at Memphis. He has averaged more than 21 minutes per game during his college career.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Barton is a .417 career shooter from 3-point range.

• True freshman Darius Thompson was a prep standout at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Gatorade State Player of the Year finalist also was a McDonald’s All-American Nominee.

• Junior walk-on Brandon Lopez is the only returning player on the Vols’ roster with significant experience running the point for Tennessee (and he only logged 108 total minutes the past two seasons).

NO TROUBLE LOGGING DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Three returners on the Tennessee roster collectively boast 28 career double-doubles entering this season.

• Jarnell Stokes is UT’s active career leader with 18 double-doubles to his credit. His 16 double-doubles last season rank tied for eighth on Tennessee’s single-season list.

• Redshirt senior Jeronne Maymon has nine career double-doubles and is one away from becoming the 30th Vol ever to record at least 10 in his career.

• Senior wing Jordan McRae has one career double-double. He totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds in last season’s win at Vanderbilt.

STAFF

The Tennessee basketball team’s performance in the classroom has improved dramatically since head coach Cuonzo Martin’s arrival on Rocky Top. There have been several noteworthy highlights.

• When the NCAA released its most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) data in June 2013, the basketball program’s multi-year score of 973 was its best ever.

• Martin has been at the helm for each of the program’s two best multi-year APR scores ever (961 in 2012, 973 in 2013).

• The program’s 2.63 team GPA for the Spring 2013 semester was its best since the data started being recorded in 2003.

• In Martin’s two years at Tennessee, every outgoing senior has received his degree.

• A total of 21 Tennessee men’s basketball players have graduated in the last five years. Those players are: Josh Bone, Quinn Cannington, Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism, John Fields, Melvin Goins, Kenny Hall, Tony Harris, Michael Hubert, Justin Jackson, Chris Lofton, Skylar McBee, Dwight Miller, Rob Murphy, Steven Pearl, J.P. Prince, Tyler Summitt, Cameron Tatum, C.J. Watson, Tanner Wild and Renaldo Woolridge.

• Of those 21 graduates in the last five years, 10 went on to sign professional basketball contracts and two have gone into coaching.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

After redshirting all of last season due to a knee injury, All-SEC forward Jeronne Maymon returns to action this season.

• Tennessee’s team MVP in 2011-12, Maymon led the Vols in scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg) in SEC play as a junior.

• He scored at least 12 points in every SEC game and also led the league in free-throw attempts during the regular season (184).

Senior wing Jordan McRae enters his final season on Rocky Top needing just 171 points to become the 45th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club.

• McRae scored a team-high 518 points last season, and he totaled 293 as UT’s sixth man in 2011-12. McRae appeared in only 10 games as a freshman in 2010-11, scoring 18 points.

This marks the sixth consecutive year that at least one member of the Tennessee roster is the son of an NBA veteran.

Only one returning “major” conference player in Division I boasted a higher scoring average in league games last season than Tennessee senior wing Jordan McRae.

Former Tennessee and NBA standout Dale Ellis will become the fourth UT men’s basketball player to have his jersey retired when the program hangs his No. 14 from the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters prior to the home game against Vanderbilt March 1, 2014.

• A native of Marietta, Ga., and two-time All-American, Ellis suited up for the Vols and head coach Don DeVoe from 1979-83.

• Ellis was twice named the SEC Player of the Year (1982 and 1983), and he was a three-time first-team All-SEC selection.

• As a junior in 1981-82, he led Tennessee to a 20-10 (13-5 SEC) record and the regular-season SEC Championship.

• Close to two decades worth of NBA stardom highlighted Ellis’ outstanding professional basketball playing career after he left Rocky Top. He was picked by the Dallas Mavericks with the ninth overall selection in the 1983 NBA Draft, and he went on to play 19 seasons in the NBA for six different teams.

The 11 players on Tennessee’s roster who own previous Division I experience combine to boast 478 assists.

• Senior guards Jordan McRae and Antonio Barton give the Vols a pair of players who own more than 100 career assists, as McRae has 118 and Barton has 142 (all as a Memphis Tiger).

• The last Tennessee team to enter a season with multiple 100-assist players was the 2009-10 squad, which reached the NCAA Elite Eight. That team entered the season with four 100-assist men: Wayne Chism (115), Bobby Maze (155), J.P. Prince (200) and Tyler Smith (347).

Last season, Tennessee’s opponents suffered through six scoreless droughts lasting longer than six minutes.

Since Cuonzo Martin assumed control of the Tennessee program prior to the 2011-12 season, only eight different players have scored 24+ points against the Volunteers in a 40-minute, regulation game.

That spans 67 total contests.

In September of 2013, Tennessee legend Bernard King was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

• King, who played three seasons (1975-77) for head coach Ray Mears at Tennessee, is the first UT men’s basketball player to be enshrined.

• At 6-7, 205 pounds, King was a three-time first-team AllAmerican, earning consensus All-American acclaim as a junior in 1976-77. He also was a three-time SEC Player of the Year.

• In 76 career games played, King logged a school-record 62 double-doubles and remains the only Vol to average a doubledouble during his career (25.8 points and 13.2 rebounds) with at least 20.0 points per game.

• With King leading the way, Tennessee captured the 1977 SEC Championship with a 16-2 record in league play and a 22-6 mark overall.

• King played 14 seasons in the NBA and totaled 19,655 points in 874 games played, giving him a career NBA scoring average of 22.5 points.

VERSATILE McRAE COULD JOIN RARE COMPANY

One of the most versatile players in college basketball, senior guard Jordan McRae could finish his career with some versatile statistical totals that would put him in rare company.

• McRae enters his senior season well within reach of totaling 1,200 career points, 300 rebounds, 150 assists and 75 blocks.

• Only two Vols have ever reached those totals: the program’s alltime leader in win and games played, Wayne Chism, and 2002 NBA Draft pick Vincent Yarbrough.

Tennessee was featured prominently throughout various college basketball preseason publication top-25 rankings.

BACKCOURT BLOCK PARTY The 11 players on Tennessee’s roster who own previous Division I experience combine to boast 206 blocks.

• Interestingly, more than 65 percent of those blocks (135 of 206) are by guards.

• The Vols’ backcourt blocks leaders are senior Jordan McRae and junior Josh Richardson, who own 59 and 42 career blocks, respectively.

OFFENSIVE OUTBURSTS OUTLAWED

It should be noted that blocks were not recorded during the careers of Vol greats Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld.
