ITEMS OF NOTE
¢ This is Tennessee’s third tournament appearance in Puerto Rico, and the Vols are 4-3 here. ¢ Tennessee went 2-1 at the 1999 Puerto Rico Holiday Classic, defeating American-Puerto Rico and Southern Illinois before falling to Tulsa in the title game. The Vols posted a 1-2 record at the 1991 San Juan Shootout, with a win over American-Puerto Rico followed by losses to TCU and Miami (Fla). ¢ Oklahoma State returns four starters from last year’s 15-18 (7-11 Big XII) team. ¢ Travis Ford is a familiar face to Tennessee fans, as he starred at SEC rival Kentucky during his collegiate playing days from 1992-94. ¢ Senior OSU center Philip Jurick is a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., who originally signed with UT out of East Ridge High School. He redshirted the 2008-09 season before transferring to Chattanooga State and eventually landing at Oklahoma State. No current Vols were with the program in 2008-09. ¢ Freshman OSU guard Marcus Smart was teammates with Vols sophomore Jarnell Stokes on USA Basketball’s gold-medal-winning U18 National Team at the FIBA Americas U18 Championships this past summer in Brazil. Both players started every game. Smart led the team in steals; Stokes was second in scoring and rebounding. ¢ OSU assistant coach Chris Ferguson was an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1997-2003 before serving as UT’s associate head coach from 2003-05. Ferguson worked under former Vol head coaches Jerry Green and Buzz Peterson.

UNC ASHEVILLE RECAP
¢ The Vols’ frontcourt exerted its power, as Jarnell Stokes (14 points and 11 rebounds) and Kenny Hall (14 points and eight rebounds) combined for 28 points and 19 rebounds. It was Stokes’ third-career double-double. ¢ Five Vols scored in double-figures as sophomore Josh Richardson tallied a career-high with 12 points while Trae Golden (14) and Jordan McRae (12) also added 10-plus. ¢ After leading by 10 points at halftime, the Vols kept UNCA at bay for most of the second half as Stokes scored 10 of his points in the final 20 minutes. Tennessee led by double-figures for the first 15 minutes of the second half thanks to stout defense and rebounding. ¢ UNC Asheville cut the deficit to less than 10 for the first time in the second half on an Jeremy Atkinson dunk after Keith Hornsby stole the ball. That put the Bulldogs within 66-58 with four minutes left. UNCA outscored Tennessee 19-10 during an eight-minute stretch while Stokes was on the bench. ¢ The Vols led at halftime, 38-28 as Richardson had nine points in the first period. Tennessee made the most of its aggressive defense converting nine Bulldogs’ turnovers into 15 points in the first half. UT shot 52 percent from the floor. ¢ Tennessee made 11 of its final 12 free throws and finished 19-of-26 (.731) at the charity stripe. ¢ UNC Asheville (1-2) was led by Jeremy Atkinson, who had 18 points and nine rebounds.

EMPHASIS OF THE DAY
UT HAS BEATEN SEVERAL NBA STARS
¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.” ¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on basketball-specific skills or strategy, as Martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day. ¢ Martin typically begins by reading that day’s “emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words. ¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy Webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys. It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’ ¢ Added Webster: “If the guys are having a hard time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start. ¢ A few examples: My desire is that the people who know me the best respect me the most. Success is not measured by how many people I coach or how many games I win; success is living life with such authentic integrity that those who know me best actually respect me the most. When someone does well, we all do well. When someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake. Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other. When we are reliable, others know that they can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.
¢ Over the last five years, several of the NBA's elite stars who didn't experience many losses during their college days have tasted defeat at the hands of the Volunteers.
TURNING A PROFIT ¢ Men’s basketball is one of two sports at the University of Tenessee that turns a profit annually (football is the other). ¢ In the spring of 2012, the Tennessee men’s basketball program was included on Forbes.com’s list of the 20 “most valuable” college basketball programs in the country (No. 18). ¢ The figures showed UT hoops with a value of $12.7 million and a profit of $6.9 million in 2011-12. ¢ Tennessee hoops also made that same Forbes’ Top-20 list in 2011.

STAFF UPDATES
¢ Cuonzo Martin announced on July 3 that he had promoted Tracy Webster to associate head coach. Webster, who, like Martin, is in his second season with the Vols, previously held the title of assistant coach since his hiring on April 5, 2011. ¢ Webster works closely with Tennessee’s guards, and his player development efforts last season helped the Vols finish second in the SEC after initially being projected to finish 11th in the then12-team league. ¢ Martin, along with UT’s head strength and conditioning coach, Ron McKeefery, announced on May 31 that Nicodemus Christopher had been hired to oversee all strength and conditioning efforts related to the men’s basketball program. ¢ A native of San Diego, Calif., Christopher has previous experience as an assistant sports performance coach at Accelerate Performance Enhancement Center (APEC) in Tyler, Texas, and he worked as a sports performance coach at the Michael Johnson Performance Center in Dallas. ¢ He has assisted with NFL training camp preparation and off-season workouts for NFL standouts such as Marion Barber, Bradie James, Akin Ayodele, Donald Driver and Weslye Saunders, just to name a few. ¢ Christopher got his bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from Baylor (2007) and a master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on biomechanics and anatomical kinesiology from the University of Texas at Tyler (2010).
STOKES ON WOODEN AWARD, NAISMITH TROPHY WATCH LISTS
¢ The Los Angeles Athletic Club placed sophomore power forward Jarnell Stokes on its John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-50 list. ¢ Stokes also landed on the 50-player, early-season watch list for the Naismith Trophy.
VOLS SEEKING EIGHTH STRAIGHT SEASON OF TOP-FIVE ATTENDANCE
¢ The Vols finished fifth nationally in average regular-season home attendance last year, drawing 17,411 fans per game. ¢ As of Nov. 3, Tennessee had already sold more season tickets for the 2012-13 campaign (13,000+) than there are total seats at five different SEC arenas.

TWO VOLS LAND ON “TOP 100” LIST
¢ Tennessee’s frontcourt tandem of Jeronne Maymon and Jarnell Stokes was honored by CBSSports.com in the preseason, as each player landed on the website’s list of “College Basketball’s Top 100 Players.” ¢ Stokes and Maymon were listed at Nos. 25 and 69, respectively. ¢ Tennessee was one of 22 schools (and one of four in the SEC) to place multiple players in the list’s top 70. ¢ Stokes and Maymon headline what CBSsports. com college basketball expert Gary Parrish touts as “one of the nation’s best front courts.” ¢ The pair weighs in at 530 pounds and combined for 22.3 points and 15.5 rebounds per game a season ago.
GOLDEN, MAYMON, STOKES GARNER PRESEASON ALL-SEC HONORS
BIG ORANGE ANNIVERSARIES
¢ The 2012-13 season marks the 50th anniversary of legendary head coach Ray Mears’ first season at UT. Mears was the head coach at Tennessee for 15 years from 1962-63 to 1976-77 and boasted a .713 winning percentage (278-112). He passed away on June 11, 2007. ¢ The 2012-13 campaign also is the 70th anniversary of Tennessee’s 1943 SEC Championship team, which finished 14-4 (6-3 SEC) under head coach John Mauer. ¢ Twenty years ago, Allan Houston captured the 1993 SEC scoring title (22.3 ppg) – and he also broke Ernie Grunfeld’s school scoring record. ¢ And Ron Slay was the league’s scoring champion 10 years ago, averaging 21.2 ppg in 2003.
ANOTHER AMBITIOUS SCHEDULE
¢ Trae Golden was s second-team selection on the coaches' preseason All-SEC Team. ¢ Jeronne Maymon made the coaches’ All-SEC first team but was a second-team selection by the league’s media. ¢ Jarnell Stokes was named to the media’s fiveman preseason All-SEC first team (and received three votes for SEC POY), but the league’s coaches tabbed him as a second-teamer.
¢ In keeping with recent tradition, Tennessee’s schedule will once again rank among the most difficult in the nation... ¢ At least 17 games against teams that won 20 or more games last season ¢ At least 13 games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season (and at least seven games against teams who advanced to the Sweet Sixteen) ¢ At least 12 games against teams with a top-50 RPI last season
LEAGUE MEDIA PICKS VOLS FOURTH
80 = TIPPING POINT
¢ A preseason poll of SEC and national media members projected Tennessee to finish fourth in the 14-team SEC this season. ¢ The Vols were picked to finish 11th in last year’s preseason media poll (the league had 12 teams), but went 10-6 to finish second in the final standings in Cuonzo Martin’s first season at UT.
¢ In five seasons as a head coach, Cuonzo Martin’s teams are 15-2 when they score at least 80 points. That’s not surprising given the emphasis Martin places on unrelenting defensive pressure, tenacity and technique.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN
¢ For the second straight year, Tennessee’s roster includes four players from the state of Georgia. ¢ UT’s three returnees from the Peach State are responsible for more than 47 percent of the total Division I points scored (2,541) by this year’s roster. Trae Golden (555), Kenny Hall (331), Jordan McRae (311) combine for 1,197 points entering this season. ¢ Backup point guard Armani Moore is a true freshman from Kennesaw, Ga.
¢ The Vols’ 2012-13 roster features 15 players (13 scholarship student-athletes) representing three nations and seven states. ¢ Four Vols hail from the state of Tennessee, while four are from Georgia. ¢ Tennessee has five seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen. ¢ The roster includes nine guards, five forwards and one center. ¢ Six Vols stand 6-5 or shorter, and nine are 6-6 or taller.

STOKES ENJOYS GOLDEN SUMMER
¢ Sophomore power forward Jarnell Stokes starred this summer for the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team, which won the gold medal at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. ¢ The Memphis, Tenn., native started all five of Team USA’s games at the championship, averaging 14.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game. ¢ The team’s second-leading rebounder and scorer, Stokes was remarkably efficient offensively, shooting .689 from the field. ¢ Stokes was the only player on the U.S. squad who boasted any collegiate experience. ¢ “You leave the SEC and come back to playing with your age group — it’s crazy how much easier it gets and how much smaller the other guys are,” Stokes said. “I can bury guys better. Sometimes I buried them early, before I’d catch the ball, and I already had them sealed.” ¢ Florida coach Billy Donovan was Stokes’ head coach at the FIBA Championship and was impressed by Stokes’ ability to physically dominate. ¢ “There was no one guy down there who could match up to him physically,” Donovan said. “He just overwhelmed other teams’ frontcourts.”
SEC GROWS, TOURNAMENT EXPANDS
¢ The SEC adds Missouri and Texas A&M this season, bringing the total of league teams to 14. ¢ Each program is playing an 18-game SEC schedule (no divisions). ¢ The 2013 SEC Tournament will be held in Nashville, Tenn., at Bridgestone Arena, March 13-17. ¢ The tournament, which had been a four-day event featuring 12 teams, has expanded to 14 teams, adding an extra day of competition. The tournament now begins on Wednesday with two games featuring the four lowest-seeded teams.
SUMMER VACATION: VOLS IN ITALY Cuonzo Martin took the Tennessee basketball team on a 10-day, four-game exhibition tour of Italy Aug. 5-15. The tour began in Rome and progressed north through Florence, Pisa and The Republic of San Marino before concluding in Como. The Volunteers plowed through each of their four exhibition opponents en route to a perfect 4-0 record. The competition included All-Star Italy (a collection of Italian professional players), the Lithuanian second-division champion BC Atletas, BC Zeta Golubovci from Montenegro and Amici del Campetto. BC Atletas provided the biggest test for Tennessee — the Lithuanian pros defeated Georgia just days before facing the Vols. Atletas also added a victory over Purdue two days after playing UT. Tennessee handed BC Atletas an 82-68 defeat in what would prove to be the Vols’ lowest-scoring game of the tour. In total, the Big Orange boasted an average margin of victory of 49.3 points in its four outings. Twice, in a display of sportsmanship, the Vols requested a running clock during the second half. In an effort to make the trip an educational opportunity for a team with numerous players who had never traveled abroad, Martin called upon UT professor Dr. Robert Bast, Cuonzo Martin (second from left) and who crafted a three-credit course (History 491) appropriately members of his staff at the Leaning Tower named “Renaissance Men.” The class met for several on-cam- of Pisa. pus lectures before the trip, preparing the student-athletes for the culture, cities and landmarks they would encounter once they stepped foot on Italian soil. Highlights of the trip included visits to the Roman Colosseum, the ruins of the Roman Forum, Vatican City — including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel — Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David in Florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the three towers of San Marino and a cruise on Lake Como (the first-ever boat ride for four team members).
MARTIN ALWAYS POISED
¢ In 138 games as a college head coach, Cuonzo Martin has never been whistled for a technical foul.
20 = 100 FOR MARTIN
¢ If Tennessee reaches the 20-win mark this season, win No. 20 also will be the 100th victory of Cuonzo Martin’s young head-coaching career. ¢ Martin entered this season with an 80-56 record in four previous seasons as a head coach (three at Missouri State, one at Tennessee).
@CuonzoMartin on Twitter
¢ Head coach Cuonzo Martin is very active on Twitter, @CuonzoMartin. ¢ Martin’s 23,341 followers ranks ninth among all Division I hoops coaches, and he is one of only 10 coaches with more than 20,000 followers. The Tennessee basketball team and staff outisde St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

$40 MILLION COMMITMENT Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top
The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena. The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities. The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room. The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs. And new to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.
It’s so much MORE than just winning ballgames. DEVELOPING WELL-ROUNDED YOUNG MEN
¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he relies on Marco Harris, the basketball team’s student-athlete welfare coordinator, to conduct yearround seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life. ¢ Harris was a two-sport athlete in college (basketball and baseball), and he also is a successful private business owner, operating a pair of Subway franchises. ¢ Harris regularly schedules guest speakers and team seminars focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more. ¢ Harris also oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT Medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), Race for the Cure and several other events.
“Eventually this ball will stop bouncing. So I’ve got to help you find your way in life. And I want you to walk with your head held high and your chest out because you’re a man.” - Cuonzo Martin
PERSONAL BRANDING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA
¢ Rather than banning his players from using various social media services, Cuonzo Martin believes in educating them on how to effectively use social media as a positive personal branding tool.
