¢ This is Tennessee’s third tournament appearance in Puerto Rico, and the Vols are 4-4 here. ¢ Tennessee went 2-1 at the 1999 Puerto Rico Holiday Classic, defeating American-Puerto Rico and Southern Illinois before falling to Tulsa in the title game. The Vols posted a 1-2 record at the 1991 San Juan Shootout, with a win over American-Puerto Rico followed by losses to TCU and Miami (Fla). ¢ The Vols swept a home-and-home series with UMass in 2003 and 2004, the only meetings in the series. Current Brooklyn Nets guard C.J. Watson totaled 20 points and 11 assists for UT in the two wins. ¢ Last season, UMass went 25-11 and advanced to the semfinals of both the Atlantic 10 Championship and the NIT. ¢ Just as he did during the second half of last season, junior wing Jordan McRae has provided an offensive boost off the bench through three games for Tennessee. ¢ McRae ranks second on the team with 11.0 points per game, and he is shooting a teamleading .556 (5-for-9) from 3-point range. ¢ The Midway, Ga., native came off the bench to score in double figures in six of UT’s last 14 games last season.

MISSING MAYMON ON THE GLASS

¢ With its top returning rebounder, Jeronne Maymon, out with a knee injury, Tennessee has been neutralized on the boards. ¢ Maymon was fifth in the SEC with 8.1 rpg last season (including 3.0 offensive rpg). ¢ The Vols own a 0.0 rebounding margin, as they and their opponents each average exactly 32.0 rebounds per game. ¢ Forwards Jarnell Stokes (6.7 rpg) and Kenny Hall (6.3 rpg) lead the Vols in rebounding.

¢ True freshman guard Derek Reese (who is inactive as he rehabs from August shoulder surgery) played for Puerto Rico in July’s Nike Global Challenge. He was eligible for the team because his grandparents, Anselmo and Irma Montanez, were born in Puerto Rico. ¢ Reese led the Puerto Rican team in scoring (21.0 ppg), rebounding (12.3 rpg) and steals (1.3 spg). ¢ Sophomore guard Brandon Lopez’s father, Hector Lopez, is Puerto Rican (now lives in Florida). ¢ Vols assistant coach Kent Williams actually played against Tennessee at the 1999 Puerto Rico Holiday Classic in Bayamón. Then a true freshman at Southern Illinois, Williams led the Salukis with 15 points on 5-of-17 shooting. ¢ In the one-year period spanning from Nov. 19, 2011, to Nov. 19, 2012, the Vols will have spent 10 days in Italy and close to a week in both Maui and Puerto Rico.

STARTING SHORTHANDED

¢ The Vols enter this week’s tournament with three members of its 15-man roster sidelined by injuries. Most notably, senior forward Jeronne Maymon, a second-team All-SEC performer and UT’s second-leading scorer last season, is out with a knee injury. ¢ Fellow senior forward Dwight Miller also is still rehabbing following offseason knee surgery. ¢ Freshman guard Derek Reese had surgery in August to address a labral tear.

OKLAHOMA STATE RECAP

¢ Tennessee suffered its first defeat of the 2012-13 season Friday, falling 62-45 to Oklahoma State in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. ¢ The Vols (2-1) struggled from the floor all afternoon, shooting just 26.0 percent overall and only making 5-of-23 from 3-point range. Oklahoma State outrebounded the Vols 40-30. ¢ Junior point guard Trae Golden led UT with 11 points – the Vols’ only double-figure scorer. ¢ Marcus Smart led three Cowboys in double-figures with 17 points along with a game-high nine rebounds. Le’Bryan Nash also tallied 17, while Markel Brown had 13 points and eight rebounds. ¢ Ahead by 14 on seven different occasions in the first 10 minutes of the second half, OSU finally extended its lead beyond that two-touchdown mark on a 3-pointer by Smart and a layup by Kirby Gardner. Those buckets finished a 7-0 spurt by OSU and put them ahead 54-35 with 7:45 remaining. ¢ In a defensive first half, OSU led 30-19 at halftime as the Cowboys outrebounded the Vols 2013. OSU outscored the Vols 14-7 to end the half. ¢ The offenses struggled on both ends, as the teams were held scoreless for nearly five minutes midway though the half. OSU broke the drought as former Vol Philip Jurick scored with 7:27 left in the half to give the Cowboys as 16-7 lead. ¢ Tennessee missed 10 field goals in a row at one point in the first half, as the Vols did not register a point for 8:21.

EMPHASIS OF THE DAY

UT HAS BEATEN SEVERAL NBA STARS

¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.” ¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on basketball-specific skills or strategy, as Martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day. ¢ Martin typically begins by reading that day’s “emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words. ¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy Webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys. It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’ ¢ Added Webster: “If the guys are having a hard time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start. ¢ A few examples:  My desire is that the people who know me the best respect me the most. Success is not measured by how many people I coach or how many games I win; success is living life with such authentic integrity that those who know me best actually respect me the most.  When someone does well, we all do well. When someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake.

Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other.  When we are reliable, others know that they can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.

LANDRY, DAVIS, HUBBS SIGN WITH VOLS

¢ Cuonzo Martin announced on Nov. 15 that and Travon (pronounced: tray-VAHN) Landry, A.J. Davis and Robert Hubbs III all signed National Letters of Intent to attend UT and play for the Volunteers beginning with the 2013-14 season. ¢ Landry is a 6-0 point guard originally from San Antonio, Texas, who currently starts for the powerhouse program at Huntington St. Joseph Prep in Huntington, W.Va. ¢ Davis is a 6-8 guard/forward from Buford, Ga., and is the son of 13-year NBA veteran and 2001 NBA All-Star Antonio Davis. ¢ Hubbs is a 6-5 shooting guard from Newbern, Tenn. and is rated as a top-15 national prospect.

STAFF UPDATES

¢ Cuonzo Martin announced on July 3 that he had promoted Tracy Webster to associate head coach. Webster, who, like Martin, is in his second season with the Vols, previously held the title of assistant coach since his hiring on April 5, 2011. ¢ Webster works closely with Tennessee’s guards, and his player development efforts last season helped the Vols finish second in the SEC after initially being projected to finish 11th in the then12-team league. ¢ Martin, along with UT’s head strength and conditioning coach, Ron McKeefery, announced on May 31 that Nicodemus Christopher had been hired to oversee all strength and conditioning efforts related to the men’s basketball program. ¢ A native of San Diego, Calif., Christopher has previous experience as an assistant sports performance coach at Accelerate Performance Enhancement Center (APEC) in Tyler, Texas, and he worked as a sports performance coach at the Michael Johnson Performance Center in Dallas. ¢ He has assisted with NFL training camp preparation and off-season workouts for NFL standouts such as Marion Barber, Bradie James, Akin Ayodele, Donald Driver and Weslye Saunders, just to name a few. ¢ Christopher got his bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from Baylor (2007) and a master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on biomechanics and anatomical kinesiology from the University of Texas at Tyler (2010).

STOKES ENJOYS GOLDEN SUMMER

¢ Sophomore power forward Jarnell Stokes starred this summer for the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team, which won the gold medal at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. ¢ The Memphis, Tenn., native started all five of Team USA’s games at the championship, averaging 14.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game. ¢ The team’s second-leading rebounder and scorer, Stokes was remarkably efficient offensively, shooting .689 from the field. ¢ Stokes was the only player on the U.S. squad who boasted any collegiate experience. ¢ “You leave the SEC and come back to playing with your age group — it’s crazy how much easier it gets and how much smaller the other guys are,” Stokes said. “I can bury guys better.

Sometimes I buried them early, before I’d catch the ball, and I already had them sealed.” ¢ Florida coach Billy Donovan was Stokes’ head coach at the FIBA Championship and was impressed by Stokes’ ability to physically dominate. ¢ “There was no one guy down there who could match up to him physically,” Donovan said. “He just overwhelmed other teams’ frontcourts.”

SUMMER VACATION: VOLS IN ITALY Cuonzo Martin took the Tennessee basketball team on a 10-day, four-game exhibition tour of Italy Aug. 5-15. The tour began in Rome and progressed north through Florence, Pisa and The Republic of San Marino before concluding in Como.

The Volunteers plowed through each of their four exhibition opponents en route to a perfect 4-0 record. The competition included All-Star Italy (a collection of Italian professional players), the Lithuanian second-division champion BC Atletas, BC Zeta Golubovci from Montenegro and Amici del Campetto.

BC Atletas provided the biggest test for Tennessee — the Lithuanian pros defeated Georgia just days before facing the Vols. Atletas also added a victory over Purdue two days after playing UT. Tennessee handed BC Atletas an 82-68 defeat in what would prove to be the Vols’ lowest-scoring game of the tour.

In total, the Big Orange boasted an average margin of victory of 49.3 points in its four outings. Twice, in a display of sportsmanship, the Vols requested a running clock during the second half.

In an effort to make the trip an educational opportunity for a team with numerous players who had never traveled abroad, Martin called upon UT professor Dr. Robert Bast, Cuonzo Martin (second from left) and who crafted a three-credit course (History 491) appropriately members of his staff at the Leaning Tower named “Renaissance Men.” The class met for several on-cam- of Pisa. pus lectures before the trip, preparing the student-athletes for the culture, cities and landmarks they would encounter once they stepped foot on Italian soil.

Highlights of the trip included visits to the Roman Colosseum, the ruins of the Roman Forum, Vatican City — including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel — Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David in Florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the three towers of San Marino and a cruise on Lake Como (the first-ever boat ride for four team members).

$40 MILLION COMMITMENT Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top

The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign.

Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena.

The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities.

The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room.

The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs.

And new to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.

DEVELOPING WELL-ROUNDED YOUNG MEN

¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he relies on Marco Harris, the basketball team’s student-athlete welfare coordinator, to conduct yearround seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life. ¢ Harris was a two-sport athlete in college (basketball and baseball), and he also is a successful private business owner, operating a pair of Subway franchises. ¢ Harris regularly schedules guest speakers and team seminars focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more. ¢ Harris also oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT Medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), Race for the Cure and several other events.
