A TENNESSEE WIN WOULD... Extend UT’s active home win streak to five games Be UT’s 300th all-time win at Thompson-Boling Arena Make the Vols 3-0 in their current six-game homestand Improve UT’s record to 74-9 (.892) all-time against current members of the Southern Conference Be UT’s 73rd victory during the careers of four-year seniors Kenny Hall and Skylar McBee
¢ This is the third contest of a six-game homestand for Tennessee that began Dec. 13 and stretches through Jan. 9. The Vols are 2-0. ¢ Friday’s game is Tennessee’s first chance to record the program’s 300th all-time win at Thompson-Boling Arena, which opened for the 1987-88 season. UT is 4-0 at home this year. ¢ Vols point guard Trae Golden is the reigning SEC Player of the Week after scoring a seasonhigh 25 points to lift UT past previously unbeaten and 23rd-ranked Wichita State last Thursday. ¢ UT senior forward Kenny Hall (hamstring strain) did not play Tuesday vs. Presbyterian. ¢ The Vols and Catamounts have shared three common opponents this season — Georgetown, UNC Asheville and Wichita State. Tennessee defeated Asheville and WSU; the Catamounts lost to all three opponents. ¢ WCU averages 71.9 ppg, but the Vols have not allowed more than 69 points all season. ¢ Catamounts forward Tom Tankelewicz made six 3-pointers in WCU’s 81-68 loss at Georgetown Saturday en route to a career-high 24 points. ¢ This will be Western Carolina’s 10th game away from home this season. ¢ The Southern Conference head coaches picked WCU to finish third in the league’s North Division. ¢ Tennessee director of basketball operations Houston Fancher is very familiar with the Southern Conference, as he was the head coach at Appalachian State for nine seasons (2000-08).

BY THE NUMBERS
8
» Sophomore power forward Jarnell Stokes, who at 18-years-old measures in at a chiseled 6-8, 270 pounds, enters the season with eight percent body fat.
PRESBYTERIAN RECAP
¢ Jarnell Stokes dominated inside for 18 points to lead five Vols in double figures as Tennessee cruised to a 78-62 win over Presbyterian. ¢ Tennessee (6-3) outrebounded Presbyterian (2-9), 42-22. The Vols had just six turnovers, the fewest in the Cuonzo Martin era. ¢ Reigning SEC Player of the Week Trae Golden scored 16 points and dished out a season-high eight assists without a turnover. Jordan McRae (12), Skylar McBee (12) and D’Montre Edwards (career-high 11) also scored in double figures. ¢ McRae, who had been challenged by Martin before the game to make an impact on the boards, tied a career-high with eight rebounds. ¢ UT took a 43-13 lead into the break. PC’s 13 points were the fewest Tennessee has allowed in a half all season and the fewest allowed in a first half since leading Georgia at halftime, 35-13, en route to a 77-48 victory on Feb. 4, 1998. ¢ Three players scored in double figures for Presbyterian, led by Khalid Mutakibbir’s 18 points.
11
» Tennessee has drawn 14 charges through the first nine games of the season. Senior forward Kenny Hall leads the way with four charges drawn (11 in his career).
GUARDS GOING TO THE GLASS
¢ Point guard Trae Golden is averaging a careerbest 3.7 rebounds per game, and his season rebounding total stands at 33 through nine games. ¢ Jordan McRae is coming off a career-hightying eight-rebound effort vs. Presbyterian and is averaging 3.0 rpg. ¢ Josh Richardson is UT’s top perimeter rebounder, ranking third on the team with 4.9 rpg. ¢ In total, Tennessee’s regular perimeter starters — Golden, Richardson and senior Skylar McBee (1.1 rpg) — combine to account for 9.7 rpg.
FREE THROWS FINALLY FALLING
¢ During UT’s two-game road losing skid at Georgetown and Virginia early this month, the Vols shot 42.1 percent from the free-throw line as a team (8-for-19). ¢ But in the two games since (both home wins), UT is shooting 80.8 percent at the foul line (42for-52).

QUICK DEFENSIVE NOTES
¢ Tennessee’s half-court defense has caused three shot-clock violations so far this season. ¢ The Vols’ 3-point field-goal defense of .265 is second in the SEC and ranks 15th nationally. ¢ UT's opponents have suffered through four scoreless droughts of at least six minutes this season (Virginia 6:41, Georgetown 6:23, Kennesaw State 6:20, Oakland 6:10). ¢ Tennessee held 20th-ranked Georgetown without a field goal for the final 10:17 of the first half on Nov. 30. The Hoyas also were held scoreless for the final 4:09 of regulation. ¢ Jarnell Stokes recorded a career-high five steals in the season-opener against Kennesaw State.
SHUTTING DOWN THE THREE
¢ The Vols boast a .265 3-point field-goal defense this season, holding opponents to an average of 4.0 made 3-pointers per game (36-of-136).
SACRIFICING THE BODY FOR THE TEAM
¢ Through nine games, Kenny Hall has drawn a team-high four charges this season. ¢ As a team, Tennessee has drawn 14 charges on the year (1.6 per game).
ACTIVE HANDS
¢ The Vols track the number of pass deflections they record every game. Tennessee has had at least 10 deflections in all but one of its games this season, and is averaging 12.7 per game. ¢ Those who attend a Tennessee basketball game in person are sure to hear Cuonzo Martin’s repetitive yell of, “Haaands!” whenever the Vols are on defense.
STARTING STRONG
¢ Martins Vols have held 21 teams to fewer than 30 first-half points.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURSTS OUTLAWED
¢ Since the start of 2012, no opposing player has scored more than 23 points against Tennessee. ¢ In total, only four players have managed 24+ points against the Vols since Cuonzo Martin assumed control of the Tennessee program. ¢ The Lucky Few: 24+ Points vs. Martin’s Vols Player, School Pts Date Reggie Hamilton, Oakland 35 11/28/11 J.P. LAST YEAR’S SEC SCORING DEFENSE BEST SINCE 1969
¢ Tennessee’s scoring defense of 61.6 ppg in SEC play last year was the program’s best in the shotclock era (1986-present). ¢ Not since 1968-69 had a UT team stifled league opponents like last year’s Vols. ¢ The 1968-69 squad held SEC opponents to just 60.9 ppg; at that time, the SEC was composed of only 10 teams and the league schedule featured 18 games.
MARTIN HAS HISTORY WITH DEFENSIVE STOPPERS
¢ During Cuonzo Martin’s assistant/associate head coaching tenure at Purdue from 2000-08, the Boilermakers produced three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honorees. ¢ Guard Kenneth Lowe won the award in both 2003 and 2004, and guard Chris Kramer captured the honor in 2008. ¢ And in 2011, which was Martin’s third and final season as head coach at Missouri State, he coached Jermaine Mallett to a spot on the MVC All-Defense Team.

EMPHASIS OF THE DAY
UT HAS BEATEN SEVERAL NBA STARS
¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.” ¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on basketball-specific skills or strategy, as Martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day. ¢ Martin typically begins by reading that day’s “emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words. ¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy Webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys. It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’ ¢ Added Webster: “If the guys are having a hard time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start. ¢ A few examples: My desire is that the people who know me the best respect me the most. Success is not measured by how many people I coach or how many games I win; success is living life with such authentic integrity that those who know me best actually respect me the most. When someone does well, we all do well. When someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake. Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other. When we are reliable, others know that they can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.
¢ Over the last five years, several of the NBA's elite stars who didn't experience many losses during their college days have tasted defeat at the hands of the Volunteers.
TURNING A PROFIT ¢ Men’s basketball is one of two sports at the University of Tenessee that turns a profit annually (football is the other). ¢ In the spring of 2012, the Tennessee men’s basketball program was included on Forbes.com’s list of the 20 “most valuable” college basketball programs in the country (No. 18). ¢ The figures showed UT hoops with a value of $12.7 million and a profit of $6.9 million in 2011-12. ¢ Tennessee hoops also made that same Forbes’ Top-20 list in 2011.

¢ Fellow senior forward Dwight Miller also is still rehabbing following offseason knee surgery. ¢ Freshman guard Derek Reese had surgery in August to address a labral tear. He started taking part in limited practice drills when the team was in Puerto Rico in mid-November.
VOLS PUT TOGETHER HISTORIC DEFENSIVE EFFORT AT GEORGETOWN
LANDRY, DAVIS, HUBBS SIGN WITH VOLS
¢ Senior forward Kenny Hall leads the Vols with a +13.11 plus/minus rating per 40 minutes. ¢ Other leaders in plus/minus rating per 40 minutes are: Armani Moore (+8.92), Trae Golden (+8.85) and Yemi Makanjuola (+7.31).
¢ Tennessee fell at No. 20 Georgetown 37-36 Nov. 30 in the SEC/Big East Challenge. It was a game that was noteworthy for several reasons. ¢ The game was the lowest combined score in a UT game since the Vols' 11-6 win over Temple on Dec. 15, 1973. That was the last time the Vols held a Division I opponent to as few as 37 points. ¢ UT’s 37 points surredered also marked the program’s best defensive scoring effort since holding Ohio Northern to 33 points in a 40-33 win on Nov. 25, 1983. ¢ The Vols held Georgetown scoreless for the final 4:09 in regulation. The Hoyas were held without a field goal for the final 10:17 of the first half.
SIXTH MAN SPARKPLUG
¢ Just as he did during the second half of last season, junior wing Jordan McRae provided an offensive boost off the bench through eight games for Tennessee before starting for the first time this season Tuesday vs. Presbyterian. ¢ McRae ranks third on the team with 10.1 points per game, and he is shooting a team-best .375 (12-for-32) from 3-point range. ¢ The Midway, Ga., native came off the bench to score in double figures in six of UT’s last 14 games last season.
PRODUCTION INCREASE FOR J-RICH
¢ After averaging 2.9 points per game as a true freshman last year, guard Josh Richardson is averaging 6.3 ppg through UT’s first nine games. ¢ Now a starter on the wing, Richardson had 11 points and nine rebounds in the win over UMass.
STARTING SHORTHANDED
¢ The Vols have begun the season with three members of its 15-man roster sidelined by injuries. Most notably, senior forward Jeronne Maymon, a second-team All-SEC performer and UT’s second-leading scorer last season, is out with a knee injury.
5,381
¢ Cuonzo Martin announced on Nov. 15 that and Travon (pronounced: tray-VAHN) Landry, A.J. Davis and Robert Hubbs III all signed National Letters of Intent to attend UT and play for the Volunteers beginning with the 2013-14 season. ¢ Landry is a 6-0 point guard originally from San Antonio, Texas, who currently starts for the powerhouse program at Huntington St. Joseph Prep in Huntington, W.Va. ¢ Davis is a 6-8 guard/forward from Buford, Ga., and is the son of 13-year NBA veteran and 2001 NBA All-Star Antonio Davis. ¢ Hubbs is a 6-5 shooting guard from Newbern, Tenn. and is rated as a top-15 national prospect.
STOKES ON WOODEN AWARD, NAISMITH TROPHY WATCH LISTS
¢ The Los Angeles Athletic Club placed sophomore power forward Jarnell Stokes on its John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-50 list. ¢ Stokes also landed on the 50-player, early-season watch list for the Naismith Trophy.
VOLS SEEKING EIGHTH STRAIGHT SEASON OF TOP-FIVE ATTENDANCE
¢ The Vols finished fifth nationally in average regular-season home attendance last year, drawing 17,411 fans per game. ¢ As of Nov. 27, Tennessee had sold more season tickets for the 2012-13 campaign (13,150+) than there are total seats at five different SEC arenas.
BOUND 4 BAHAMAS: VOLS IN 2013 BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS FIELD
¢ Tennessee has been confirmed as one eight teams in the field for the 2013 Battle 4 Atlantis, which takes place Nov. 28-30, 2013, at the Atlantis Royal Towers Resort on Paradise Island, Bahamas. ¢ Joining the Vols in the 2013 field are Kansas, Villanova, Wake Forest, USC, UTEP and Xavier. The eighth team will be announced at a later date.
LEAGUE MEDIA PICKS VOLS FOURTH
¢ A preseason poll of SEC and national media members projected Tennessee to finish fourth in the 14-team SEC this season. ¢ The Vols were picked to finish 11th in last year’s preseason media poll (the league had 12 teams), but went 10-6 to finish second in the final standings in Cuonzo Martin’s first season at UT.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN
¢ The Vols’ 2012-13 roster features 15 players (13 scholarship student-athletes) representing three nations and seven states. ¢ Four Vols hail from the state of Tennessee, while four are from Georgia. ¢ Tennessee has five seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen. ¢ The roster includes nine guards, five forwards and one center. ¢ Six Vols stand 6-5 or shorter, and nine are 6-6 or taller.
BIG ORANGE ANNIVERSARIES
¢ The 2012-13 season marks the 50th anniversary of legendary head coach Ray Mears’ first season at UT. Mears was the head coach at Tennessee for 15 years from 1962-63 to 1976-77 and boasted a .713 winning percentage (278-112). He passed away on June 11, 2007. ¢ The 2012-13 campaign also is the 70th anniversary of Tennessee’s 1943 SEC Championship team, which finished 14-4 (6-3 SEC) under head coach John Mauer. ¢ Twenty years ago, Allan Houston captured the 1993 SEC scoring title (22.3 ppg) – and he also broke Ernie Grunfeld’s school scoring record. ¢ And Ron Slay was the league’s scoring champion 10 years ago, averaging 21.2 ppg in 2003.
ANOTHER AMBITIOUS SCHEDULE
¢ In keeping with recent tradition, Tennessee’s schedule will once again rank among the most difficult in the nation. ¢ At least 17 games against teams that won 20 or more games last season ¢ At least 13 games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season (and at least seven games against teams who advanced to the Sweet Sixteen) ¢ At least 12 games against teams with a top-50 RPI last season

STOKES ENJOYED GOLDEN SUMMER
¢ Sophomore power forward Jarnell Stokes starred this summer for the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team, which won the gold medal at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. ¢ The Memphis, Tenn., native started all five of Team USA’s games at the championship, averaging 14.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game. ¢ The team’s second-leading rebounder and scorer, Stokes was remarkably efficient offensively, shooting .689 from the field.
MARTIN ALWAYS POISED
¢ In 145 games as a college head coach, Cuonzo Martin has never been whistled for a technical foul.
20 = 100 FOR MARTIN
¢ If Tennessee reaches the 20-win mark this season, win No. 20 also will be the 100th victory of Cuonzo Martin’s young head-coaching career. ¢ Martin entered this season with an 80-56 record in four previous seasons as a head coach (three at Missouri State, one at Tennessee).
@CuonzoMartin on Twitter
¢ Vols head coach Cuonzo Martin is very active on Twitter, @CuonzoMartin. ¢ Martin’s 27,282 followers rank eighth among all Division I hoops coaches, and he is one of only eight coaches with more than 25,000 followers.
SUMMER VACATION: VOLS IN ITALY Cuonzo Martin took the Tennessee basketball team on a 10-day, four-game exhibition tour of Italy Aug. 5-15. The tour began in Rome and progressed north through Florence, Pisa and The Republic of San Marino before concluding in Como. The Volunteers plowed through each of their four exhibition opponents en route to a perfect 4-0 record. The competition included All-Star Italy (a collection of Italian professional players), the Lithuanian second-division champion BC Atletas, BC Zeta Golubovci from Montenegro and Amici del Campetto. BC Atletas provided the biggest test for Tennessee — the Lithuanian pros defeated Georgia just days before facing the Vols. Atletas also added a victory over Purdue two days after playing UT. Tennessee handed BC Atletas an 82-68 defeat in what would prove to be the Vols’ lowest-scoring game of the tour. In total, the Big Orange boasted an average margin of victory of 49.3 points in its four outings. Twice, in a display of sportsmanship, the Vols requested a running clock during the second half. In an effort to make the trip an educational opportunity for a team with numerous players who had never traveled abroad, Martin called upon UT professor Dr. Robert Bast, Cuonzo Martin (second from left) and who crafted a three-credit course (History 491) appropriately members of his staff at the Leaning Tower named “Renaissance Men.” The class met for several on-cam- of Pisa. pus lectures before the trip, preparing the student-athletes for the culture, cities and landmarks they would encounter once they stepped foot on Italian soil. Highlights of the trip included visits to the Roman Colosseum, the ruins of the Roman Forum, Vatican City — including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel — Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David in Florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the three towers of San Marino and a cruise on Lake Como (the first-ever boat ride for four team members).
BIG ORANGE GLOBETROTTERS
¢ In the one-year period spanning from Nov. 19, 2011, to Nov. 19, 2012, the Vols have 10 days in Italy and close to a week in both Maui and Puerto Rico.
VOLS IN THE NBA
¢ Former Vol Tobias Harris (2011) is in his second season with the Milwaukee Bucks. Through the Bucks’ first 14 contests — each of which Harris has started — he averaged 7.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. ¢ Veteran NBA point guard C.J. Watson (200306) entered his sixth NBA season with a new team: the Brooklyn Nets. Through his first five seasons, Watson averaged 7.8 points and 2.6 assists per game. ¢ Vol legends Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) and Allan Houston (1990-93) each hold NBA front-office titles. Grunfeld is in his 10th year as president of the Washington Wizards, and Houston is the assistant general manager of the New York Knicks.
80 = TIPPING POINT
¢ In five seasons as a head coach, Cuonzo Martin’s teams are 16-2 when they score at least 80 points. That’s not surprising given the emphasis Martin places on unrelenting defensive pressure, tenacity and technique.

$40 MILLION COMMITMENT Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top
The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena. The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities. The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room. The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs. And new to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.
It’s so much MORE than just winning ballgames. “Eventually this ball will stop bouncing. So I’ve got to help you find your way in life. And I want you to walk with your head held high and your chest out because you’re a man.” - Cuonzo Martin DEVELOPING WELL-ROUNDED YOUNG MEN
¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he relies on Marco Harris, the basketball team’s student-athlete welfare coordinator, to conduct yearround seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life. ¢ Harris was a two-sport athlete in college (basketball and baseball), and he also is a successful private business owner, operating a pair of Subway franchises. ¢ Harris regularly schedules guest speakers and team seminars focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more. ¢ Harris also oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT Medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), Race for the Cure and several other events.
PERSONAL BRANDING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA
¢ Rather than banning his players from using various social media services, Cuonzo Martin believes in educating them on how to effectively use social media as a positive personal branding tool.
