¢ This is the first of just five December games for the Vols. Four of those contests take place at Thompson-Boling Arena. The lone road game is a trip to face 11th-ranked Wichita State Dec. 14. ¢ Saturday’s contest marks the second of five games Tennessee will play against in-state teams this season. The Vols have already defeated Tennessee State and are riding a three-game win streak over in-state opposition. ¢ Tennessee Tech assistant coach Brian Kloman has ties to the Vols’ program. He graduated from Tennessee in 2002 and is the son of former UT assistant coach Chris Ferguson (1997-05), who is now an assistant coach at Oklahoma State. ¢ The Vols lead the SEC and ranks 10th nationally in rebounding defense, allowing just 29.3 rpg.

¢ Tennessee throttled Wake Forest 82-63 Saturday in the fifth-place game at the 2013 Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. ¢ Playing their third game in three days, the Vols were led by Wooden Award candidate Jarnell Stokes, who totaled 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. It was his third doubledouble of the tournament. ¢ Freshman Darius Thompson had the best game of his young career, making 9-of-9 shots at the free-throw line en route to a season-high 16 points. He also had three assists. ¢ Tennessee led by as many as 28 points in the second half. ¢ Tennessee led 43-32 at halftime. UT shot 53.2 percent in the game and outscored the Demon Deacons 40-26 in the paint. ¢ The Vols received 29 points off the bench. ¢ Wake Forest was led by Codi Miller-McIntyre and Travis McKie, who scored 17 and 15, respectively.

¢ Tennessee posted a 2-1 record and a fifth-place finish at the 2013 Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in Paradise Island, Bahamas Nov. 28-30. ¢ The Vols fell to UTEP in the opening round before notching dominant wins over Xavier and Wake Forest. ¢ UT played three games in three days, and forward Jarnell Stokes logged three straight double-doubles, averaging 18.0 points and 11.3 rebounds at the event.

McRAE NEARING 1,000-POINT CLUB

¢ Senior wing Jordan McRae needs just 37 points to become the 45th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club. ¢ McRae scored a team-high 518 points last season, and he totaled 293 as UT’s sixth man in 2011-12.

McRae appeared in only 10 games as a freshman in 2010-11, scoring 18 points.

VOLS TO RETIRE DALE ELLIS’ NO. 14 ¢ Former Tennessee and NBA standout Dale Ellis will become the fourth UT men’s basketball player to have his jersey retired when the program hangs his No. 14 from the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters prior to the home game against Vanderbilt March 1, 2014. ¢ A native of Marietta, Ga., and two-time AllAmerican, Ellis suited up for the Vols and head coach Don DeVoe from 1979-83. ¢ Ellis was twice named the SEC Player of the Year (1982 and 1983), and he was a three-time first-team All-SEC selection. ¢ As a junior in 1981-82, he led Tennessee to a 2010 (13-5 SEC) record and the regular-season SEC Championship. ¢ Close to two decades worth of NBA stardom highlighted Ellis’ outstanding professional basketball playing career after he left Rocky Top. VOL IN THE HALL ¢ In September of 2013, Tennessee legend Bernard King was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. ¢ King, who played three seasons (1975-77) for head coach Ray Mears at Tennessee, is the first UT men’s basketball player to be enshrined. ¢ At 6-7, 205 pounds, King was a three-time firstteam All-American, earning consensus All-American acclaim as a junior in 1976-77. He also was a three-time SEC Player of the Year. ¢ In 76 career games played, King logged a school-record 62 double-doubles and remains the only Vol to average a double-double during his career (25.8 points and 13.2 rebounds) with at least 20.0 points per game. ¢ With King leading the way, Tennessee captured the 1977 SEC Championship with a 16-2 record in league play and a 22-6 mark overall. ¢ King played 14 seasons in the NBA and totaled 19,655 points in 874 games played, giving him a career NBA scoring average of 22.5 points. ¢ On Nov. 5, ESPN aired an original “30 For 30” documentary about King and UT teammate Ernie Grunfeld titled “Bernie and Ernie.”

MARTIN’S PROGRAM MANTRA: #TOUGHERBREED ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE ¢ The Tennessee basketball team’s performance in the classroom has improved dramatically since head coach Cuonzo Martin’s arrival on Rocky Top. There have been several noteworthy highlights. ¢ When the NCAA released its most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) data in June 2013, the basketball program’s multi-year score of 973 was its best ever. ¢ Martin has been at the helm for each of the program’s two best multi-year APR scores ever (961 in 2012, 973 in 2013). ¢ The program’s 2.63 team GPA for the Spring 2013 semester was its best since the data started being recorded in 2003. ¢ In Martin’s two years at Tennessee, every outgoing senior has received his degree. ¢ A total of 21 Tennessee men’s basketball players have graduated in the last five years. Those players are: Josh Bone, Quinn Cannington, Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism, John Fields, Melvin Goins, Kenny Hall, Tony Harris, Michael Hubert, Justin Jackson, Chris Lofton, Skylar McBee, Dwight Miller, Rob Murphy, Steven Pearl, J.P. Prince, Tyler Summitt, Cameron Tatum, C.J. Watson, Tanner Wild and Renaldo Woolridge. ¢ Of those 21 graduates in the last five years, 10 went on to sign professional basketball contracts and two have gone into coaching.

EMPHASIS OF THE DAY ¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.” ¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on basketball-specific skills or strategy, as Martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day. ¢ Martin typically begins by reading that day’s “emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words. ¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy Webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys.

It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’ ¢ Added Webster: “If the guys are having a hard time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start. ¢ A few examples:  When someone does well, we all do well. When someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake.

Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other.  When we are reliable, others know that they can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.

Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin introduced a new program slogan this season: A Tougher Breed.

“Toughness has got to be what we are as a program. That’s our brand, our way of life,” Martin said.

So the Vols embody that “tougher breed” approach in all they do. Their workouts, which oftentimes begin long before sunrise. The standards to which coaches hold players and players hold each other. It can hardly be surprising that Tennessee also employs some boxing workouts from time to time, or that the Vols are embracing their lacing up the sneakers like a pugilist tying on gloves. They proudly wear T-shirts with orange boxing gloves that read “Let’s Rumble.”

“That came from the coaching staff. We’ve done boxing workouts as a team. It just shows our toughness and our tenacity,” senior forward Jeronne Maymon explained. “How we get after things.

Especially on the court, we’re always pushing and shoving each other and testing our brothers on the practice court. The sport of boxing is a good translation to what we do in practice and the weight room and other things in life.

“It would be hard to find a tougher team in America than the University of Tennessee men’s basketball program. That’s what we hang our hat on. You’ve got to find something to hang your hat on, and we hang our hat on toughness.”

Proof of said toughness is undeniable across Martin’s first two campaigns in Knoxville; his teams held foes to fewer than 65 points per game both seasons and also ranked second each year in the SEC in rebounding margin.

“Coach Martin has a very steady personality. He doesn’t waver. You always know what you’re going to get, so I think that’s what really keeps us on balance,” said Maymon. “So if (coach’s) personality wavered and sometimes he was happy and sometimes he was sad and he made us do drills off his emotions, then we’d be unbalanced. But he’s very stable, and we know what we’re getting and what we’re getting into every day. So it’s pretty easy for us to adapt to his personality.

Martin now knows without a doubt this Tennessee team wants to earn and desperately craves the opportunity to proclaim and wear that label of toughness.

“The one thing about it, every guy wants to be considered tough; they like the results behind it on the floor but also the stuff we do in the weight room,” Martin said. “Guys love to have a level of toughness, like the shirts we’ve got with the boxing gloves and ’Let’s rumble.’ We enjoy that, we embrace that. $40 MILLION COMMITMENT Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top

The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign.

Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena.

The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities.

The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room.

The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs.

And new to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.

¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he brings in speakers and presenters to conduct year-round seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life. ¢ Guest speakers and team seminars have focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more. ¢ Director of Basketball Operations Marco Harris oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT Medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), Race for the Cure and several other events.

PERSONAL BRANDING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

¢ Rather than banning his players from using various social media services, Cuonzo Martin believes in educating them on how to effectively use social media as a positive personal branding tool. ¢ In the summer of 2012, a national Yahoo!
