Today’s game opens the exhibition portion of Tennessee’s 106th season of varsity men’s basketball.

Pikeville head coach Kelly Wells was UT All-American Chris Lofton’s high school coach for five seasons at Mason County HS in Maysville, Ky. Lofton, the SEC’s all-time 3-point king, played for Wells’ varsity squad from grades 8-12.

Give Tennessee a 10-game win streak in exhibition play.

Tyndall is Tennessee’s third head coach in the last decade. At 44-years-old, Tyndall is the youngest head men’s basketball coach in the SEC.

Wells and Lofton guided Mason County to a state title in 2003, and Lofton was named Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball as a senior in 2004.

» During his two-year tenure at Southern Miss, Donnie Tyndall averaged 28 wins per season. The Golden Eagles won 27 games in 2012-13 and 29 games in 2013-14.

» That’s how many players on Tennessee’s roster have ever scored in double figures in an SEC game. Josh Richardson is the only Vol to have done so.

TEAM NOTES TENNESSEE IN EXHIBITION PLAY • Tennessee is 71-18 all-time in exhibition games. That includes a 54-10 mainland record, and a 17-8 record overseas. • The Vols have won nine straight exhibition games dating to a 79-64 loss to Indianapolis Nov. 8, 2010, at Thompson-Boling Arena. • Tennessee’s Donnie Tyndall owns a 13-1 head coaching record in exhibition play. • Last November, the Vols posted exhibition victories over Florida Southern (105-80 on Nov. 2) and Southern Indiana (78-47 on Nov. 7).

ABOUT PIKEVILLE • Founded in 1889, the University of Pikeville is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, located in Pikeville, Ky. The school is located on a 25-acre campus on a hillside overlooking downtown Pikeville. • On July 1, 2011, the school changed its name from Pikeville College to the University of Pikeville. • Pikeville sponsors an NAIA affiliated athletics program, and its teams compete in the Mid-South Conference. • UPIKE is ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason NAIA coaches’ poll after going 31-3 last year. • The Bears won the NAIA Division I men’s basketball national championship in 2011 and captured both the Mid-South Conference regular-season and tournament championships last year. • Six players on Pikeville’s 2014-15 roster previously played at an NCAA Division I school. • Head coach Kelly Wells is in his ninth season at Pikeville. • Wells, who has led the Bears to the program’s only national championship as well as its only two 30win seasons, also has been the recipient of two donated kidneys.

VOLS PICKED 13th IN SEC • Tennessee was predicted to finish 13th in the 2015 SEC race in voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN • The Vols’ 2014-15 roster features 15 players (12 scholarship student-athletes) representing nine states. • There are four Vols who hail from the state of Tennessee, three from Georgia, and a pair of players are from Florida. Alabama, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma and Texas also are represented. • Tennessee has three seniors, five juniors, two sophomores and five freshmen. • Eight Vols stand 6-5 or shorter, and seven players are 6-6 or taller.

FOUR SCHOLARSHIP RETURNEES, PROGRAM-RECORD EIGHT SCHOLARSHIP NEWCOMERS • Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall’s first season on Rocky Top signals the addition of eight scholarship newcomers, which marks the most in program history (previous high was seven). • The Vols return only four scholarship players: senior guard Josh Richardson, junior forward Armani Moore, junior forward Derek Reese and sophomore guard Robert Hubbs III. Hubbs appeared in only 12 games last season, as his debut campaign was cut short by a shoulder injury that required surgery. • Among SEC teams, Tennessee’s nine newcomers (includes one walk-on) ties Missouri for the most in the league. UT’s four returning lettermen tie Missouri and Texas A&M for fewest among SEC teams. • Richardson is the only returner who started any games last season (36), while Moore started 16 games as a freshman in 2012-13.

POINT GUARD PLIGHT • Tennessee embarks on the Donnie Tyndall era without the benefit of having a healthy true point guard on its roster. • Senior guard Brandon Lopez, a walk-on from Knoxville, is perhaps the most natural “true point guard” on the roster, but he suffered a torn ACL July 26 and underwent surgery Aug. 14. It is expected that he will miss the entire season. • At the time of his injury, Tyndall stated that Lopez was in the mix to earn the starting job. • Junior-college transfer Kevin Punter, a career twoguard, enters the season as one of Tennessee’s top options at the point. He has been learning the position for the first time this fall. • Due to circumstance, senior Josh Richardson is expected to split time with Punter at the point, while also maintaining a prominent role on the wing. • Graduate transfer Ian Chiles, who joined the Vols this summer following an impressive career at IUPUI, also was being looked upon to shoulder a heavy load at the point, but Chiles has battled nagging injuries ever since enrolling at UT (hernia surgery, shoulder and foot injuries).

BACK, BUT ON A DIFFERENT BENCH • Tennessee assistant coach Al Pinkins suffered an 86-70 loss at Thompson-Boling Arena last season when he was an assistant on the Ole Miss staff. • As an assistant coach at Morehead State last year, new UT video coordinator Beau Braden saw the Vols race to an 82-67 win over the Eagles.

Tyndall is a Sneakerhead

Donnie Tyndall has a vast personal collection of close to 500 pairs of sneakers. “I’ve always been a shoe fanatic,” Tyndall said. “I remember my mom and dad would give me a hundred dollars the week before school started and I had to make that work for my clothes. So usually it was three pairs of jeans and three shirts. But one year, they gave me a hundred bucks and the brand-new Jordans came out like the day before and I spent all hundred bucks on those.”

DT Likes Gators?!

Ever since he was a kid, Donnie Tyndall has been fascinated by alligators. He particularly enjoyed watching TV shows about gators. When he was the head coach at Southern Miss, his family surprised him with an actual pet alligator. The gator’s name: Alley-oop. Tyndall eventually had to say goodbye to Alley-oop. The only gator folks in Knoxville approve of is fried gator!

UT Roster Boasts Potential Olympian

If Puerto Rico qualifies for the 2016 Olympics, Vols junior Derek Reese may be boarding a flight to Rio. Reese, whose grandparents, Anselmo and Irma Montañez, were born in Puerto Rico, is active in that country’s national program. He played for Puerto Rico’s Men’s National “B” Team at the 2013 FIBA Stankovic Continental Champions Cup in China.

Michiganders Abound at Tennessee

Each of Tennessee’s “big three” athletic programs prominently feature a Michigan native on the coaching staff. Donnie Tyndall is a native of Grand Rapids. Head football coach Butch Jones hails from Saugatuck. And longtime assistant women’s basketball coach Dean Lockwood is from Bay City.

• This fall, first-year head coach Donnie Tyndall selected Tennessee’s two most experienced players as team co-captains. • Senior guard Josh Richardson and junior forward Armani Moore will serve as captains this season. • Both players have avoided disciplinary issues off the court their entire career and have remained in good academic standing. • Tyndall has praised the duo’s work ethic and willingness to lead by example and mentor the team’s newcomers.

• Junior forward Armani Moore signed with Tennessee in April 2012. But during his recruitment, he gave serious consideration to several schools. • One of the other programs recruiting Moore during his high school days was Morehead State and head coach Donnie Tyndall. • When Tyndall took the Tennessee job in April 2014, one returning Vol—Moore—was already familiar with Tyndall and assured his UT teammates that the Big Orange landed both a good man and a good coach.

HUBBS HEALTHY HEADING INTO SOPHOMORE SEASON

RICHARDSON READY FOR LEADERSHIP ROLE • After earning SEC All-Defensive Team honors as a junior last season, senior guard Josh Richardson is ready to replace departed starters Jeronne Maymon (Israel), Jordan McRae (Australia) and Jarnell Stokes (NBA) and assume the role of team leader. • Richardson is Tennessee’s returning leader in all but one individual statistical category (Derek Reese is the team’s top returning rebounder). • Richardson has started 68 of Tennessee’s last 69 games spanning the past two seasons. • During the 2013-14 regular season, Richardson averaged 9.5 ppg. But in Tennessee’s four NCAA Tournament games, he increased that average to 19.3 ppg.

RICHARDSON LOOKING TO JOIN 1,000-POINT CLUB • Senior guard Josh Richardson enters his final season on Rocky Top needing just 261 points to become the 47th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club. • Richardson scored a career-high 381 points last season, and he totaled 261 as a sophomore starter in 2012-13. He appeared in all 34 games as a freshman in 2011-12, scoring 97 points.

• Sophomore guard Robert Hubbs III enters the season with a clean bill of health after appearing in just 12 games as a true freshman last year (the first 12 games of the season). • Hubbs underwent season-ending surgery on his left shoulder Jan. 14, 2014, to address an injury dating to his senior year in high school. The Newbern, Tenn., native received full medical clearance this summer. • In his limited action last year, during which he wore a soft shoulder brace, Hubbs averaged 5.0 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting .281 from 3-point range.

CARMICHAEL’S MOTOR NEVER STOPS • True freshman forward Willie Carmichael III has drawn the praise of head coach Donnie Tyndall after an outstanding summer and fall. • A native of Apopka, Fla. (less than 20 miles north of Orlando), Carmichael has established a reputation as an eager learner whose motor never stops when he is on the court and a tenacious rebounder who collects boards even outside his area. • Tyndall has even gone on record stating that Carmichael, at this early stage in his career, reminds him of a young Kenneth Faried, who Tyndall coached at Morehead State.

• Carmichael initially signed with Tyndall at Southern Miss before receiving his release and following Tyndall to Tennessee.

TYNDALL CHALLENGING WOODSON • Head coach Donnie Tyndall has not been bashful about stating his expectations for sophomore big man Dominic Woodson, who joined the Vols as a transfer from Memphis in August. • Woodson, who is now down to 274 pounds after enrolling at 308, has been challenged to achieve a weight of 270 before receiving any meaningful minutes in the Vols’ rotation. • Tyndall and his staff also are looking for Woodson to demonstrate a willingness to play through fatigue. • In preseason scrimmage situations, it has been clear that Woodson has the ability to be a contributor in the post. He must prove first, however, that he can give high-level effort for extended stretches.

TYNDALL WANTS VOLS TO OVERACHIEVE

• UT finished 12th nationally in average regularseason home attendance last year, snapping a streak of eight straight seasons finishing in the top six. • The Vols still managed to draw more than 15,000 fans to home games at Thompson-Boling Arena last year, averaging 15,475 in 17 home games. • Tennessee sold more than 12,000 season tickets for each of the last eight years and appears on track to do so again this season.

• First-year Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall has preached a mantra of “overachieving” to his 2014-15 squad, and he hopes the UT fan base will do its part to help give the Vols an edge. • Tyndall: “What I want to really try to get our fans to do this year is help us be the most overachieving team in college basketball. That’s going to be our goal. And I don’t want to say that to undersell our talent level or undersell our players, but we need to overachieve this year to have a good year, and our fans need to help us do that.”

STEALS PREVALENT IN TYNDALL’S SYSTEM • The aggressive, matchup-zone defensive system employed by UT head coach Donnie Tyndall led to both of his Southern Miss teams ranking among the Division I leaders in steals each of the past two seasons. • During the 2012-13 campaign, Southern Miss ranked fifth nationally with an average of 9.6 steals per game. And in 2013-14, Tyndall’s Conference USA championship team ranked 17th nationally with 8.2 steals per game. • To compare, last year’s Tennessee squad averaged just 5.2 steals per game.

TYNDALL’S TEAM POST SOLID RPIs • In his two seasons at Southern Miss, first-year UT head coach Donnie Tyndall’s teams turned in yearend RPIs of No. 27 in 2013 and No. 29 in 2014. • In his last six seasons as a head coach, Tyndall’s teams have an average year-end RPI of 87.5. And that’s while competing in “mid-major” leagues such as the Ohio Valley Conference and Conference USA. • Tennessee’s average year-end RPI the last six years has been 45.5.

DONNIE, NIKKI ESTABLISH TYNDALL #FAMILY FOUNDATION • Shortly after settling in as Tennessee’s new head coach, Donnie Tyndall, his wife, Nikki, and his daughters, Taylor and Grace, formed The Tyndall #Family Foundation, a pending 501(c)(3) public charity that facilitates the family’s involvement in philanthropic causes throughout the state of Tennessee. • In addition to raising funds to give to nonprofit organizations, The Tyndall #Family Foundation strives to raise the public’s level of awareness regarding philanthropy. One of the goals of the foundation is to encourage members of Tennessee communities, and members of the basketball community, to become involved in and support charitable activity in the greater Knoxville area and the state of Tennessee.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE • During Donnie Tyndall’s career as a head coach, 23 of the 24 players who exhausted their eligibility under him have graduated on time. • A total of 25 Tennessee men’s basketball players have graduated in the last six years. The 2014-15 season marks the 40th anniversary of the highest-scoring team in school history. Head coach Ray Mears’ 1974-75 squad averaged 86.6 points per game (2,251 points in 26 games).

Highest Individual Scoring Average

It was also 40 years ago that a member of that team, Hall of Famer Bernard King, set the school record for single-season scoring average. The legendary Vol averaged 26.4 ppg – as a freshman.

Highest Individual Assists Average

That 1974-75 season was a good year to be a Tennessee point guard, and Rodney Woods capitalized. With weapons like Bernard King, Ernie Grunfeld and Mike Jackson flanking him, Woods, a senior, set the UT single-season record for total assists (227) and assists per game (8.73).

Best Team Rebounding Margin

Fifty years ago, head coach Ray Mears put together one of the school’s top-rebounding teams. The 196465 Vols boasted the best rebounding margin in program history, out-rebounding opponents by 16.7 rpg.

Highest-Scoring Debut by a Vol

In Bernard King’s college debut – the 40th anniversary of which takes place Nov. 30, 2014 – he dropped 42 points on Wisconsin-Milwaukee. That still stands as a record for most points in a Tennessee debut.

SCHEDULING NOTES • Tennessee opens the regular season Nov. 14 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where it meets VCU as part of the inaugural Quicken Loans Veterans Classic. • During the week of Thanksgiving, Tennessee takes part in the eight-team Orlando Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World. The tournament field also includes Georgia Tech, Kansas, Marquette, Michigan State, Rhode Island, Rider and Santa Clara. • Tennessee hosts Kansas State Dec. 6 as part of the 2014 SEC/Big 12 Challenge. The Volunteers have never previously faced K-State on the hardwood. Tennessee’s all-time record against current members of the Big 12 stands at 10-15. • Tennessee begins a two-year, home-and-home contract with Butler Dec. 14 in Knoxville. UT trails its alltime series with Butler 2-1, dating to 1958. Tennessee and Butler are two of only 13 programs in the nation to make at least four NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in the last eight seasons. • With the launch of the SEC Network, the scheduling of midweek games has been adjusted. In addition to the traditional Tuesday night games on ESPN and ESPNU, there will also be two Tuesday games on the SEC Network. Wednesdays will feature two contests on the SEC Network, while Thursdays will highlight one game on either ESPN or ESPN2. • And after not playing in Knoxville last season for the first time since 1953, Kentucky returns to Rocky Top Feb. 17 for an ESPN “Super Tuesday” matchup. The Vols do not play at Rupp Arena this season, marking UT’s first hoops campaign without a trip to Lexington, Ky., since 1953. • Texas A&M handed the Big Orange a pair of heartbreaking, buzzer-beater losses last season. That series resumes Jan. 24 in Knoxville when the Aggies visit Thompson-Boling Arena. • Former UT head coach Bruce Pearl (2005-11) returns to Thompson-Boling Arena as Auburn’s head coach Jan. 31. • For the first time since 1964, Georgia does not visit Knoxville. The Bulldogs host Tennessee Feb. 7.

STRONGER HARD WORK BEATS TALENT WHEN TALENT FAILS TO WORK HARD. Strength & Conditioing Notes

The Vols spent their summer working intensely with first-year strength and conditioning coach Todd Moyer, who tracked each player’s development throughout the summer. Junior forward Armani Moore finished the summer owning “team bests” in the 185-pound bench press (17 reps) and body-weight chin-ups (18 reps). Sophomore forward Dominic Woodson shared bench-press honors with Moore by also hoisting 17 reps. True freshman forward Willie Carmichael III showed the team’s biggest improvement in the bench press, increasing his max reps by 10 through the course of summer workouts. Carmichael also added a team-best 11.6 pounds of muscle over June and July. True freshman guard Detrick Mostella posted the team’s highest “standing” vertical jump, leaping 33 inches.

Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena. The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities. The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room. The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs. New to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck. And in March of 2014, TBA became the third college arena to install an LED lighting system (joining Arizona State and Notre Dame).
