TEAM NOTES ABOUT KANSAS STATE • The Volunteers have never previously faced KState on the hardwood.

• Tennessee’s all-time record against current members of the Big 12 Conference stands at 10-16.

• K-State posted a 20-13 (8-8 Big 12) record last season and earned its fifth straight NCAA Tournament berth.

• Wildcats forward Stephen Hurt is a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., who began his career at Lipscomb.

• Kansas State director of athletics John Currie has occupied that position since May 2009.

• Prior to that, Currie worked more than 10 years in the Tennessee athletic department, rising to the title of executive associate AD (overseeing external operations, as well as the men’s basketball program).

FAST BREAK Tennessee is one of only 13 programs in the nation to make at least four NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in the last eight seasons.

MARQUETTE RECAP • Tennessee suffered a 67-59 loss to Marquette in the third-place game of the Orlando Classic at HP Field House Sunday.

• The Vols were led by Armani Moore, who had the first double-double of his career with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He was the Vols’ only scorer or rebounder in double-figures.

• The Vols came out on fire, scoring the game’s first nine points. But, Tennessee was outscored 67-50 over the final 37 minutes. Marquette led 35-30 at halftime.

• Down eight early in the second half, the Vols rallied to within one at 44-43 on Detrick Mostella’s first bucket of the game—a 3-pointer with 10:35 remaining. Duane Wilson then answered for Marquette with consecutive 3-pointers to return the Golden Eagles’ lead to seven, 50-43 with nine minutes left.

• Marquette redshirt freshmen Wilson topped the Golden Eagles’ scoring chart with a career-high 30 points as he connected on 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

TOUR DE KANSAS • In less than a one-year span, Tennessee will have faced Wichita State, Kansas and Kansas State. The Vols lost on the road at 12th-ranked WSU Dec. 14, 2013, and fell to 11th-ranked Kansas at a neutral site last Friday.

EACH MAN HAS FIVE TO GIVE • Through just five games, Tennessee has had six “player disqualifications” for fouling out.

• The school record for DQs in a season is 24, which has happened three times (1962, 1977, 1978).

• The Vols lead the nation in fouls per game, with an average of 26.2.

McGHEE EXTENDING POSSESSIONS • Through his first five college games, freshman Jabari McGhee is averaging 3.2 offensive rebounds.

• 16 of his 24 total rebounds have come on the offensive glass (66.7 percent). The 16 offensive boards leads the team.

• McGhee is averaging 13.0 total rebounds per 40 minutes and 8.6 offensive rebounds per 40 minutes.

He is playing 14.8 minutes per game.

DEFENSIVE NOTES • Through five games, the Vols are forcing 13.8 turnovers per game (leading to 16.0 ppg) and are averaging 7.2 steals and 3.2 blocks per game.

• Tennessee has drawn seven total charges this season.

Donnie Tyndall has a vast personal collection of close to 500 pairs of sneakers.

“I’ve always been a shoe fanatic,” Tyndall said.

“I remember my mom and dad would give me a hundred dollars the week before school started and I had to make that work for my clothes.

So usually it was three pairs of jeans and three shirts. But one year, they gave me a hundred bucks and the brand-new Jordans came out like the day before and I spent all hundred bucks on those.”

DT Likes Gators?!

Ever since he was a kid, Donnie Tyndall has been fascinated by alligators. He particularly enjoyed watching TV shows about gators.

When he was the head coach at Southern Miss, his family surprised him with an actual pet alligator. The gator’s name: Alley-oop.

Tyndall eventually had to say goodbye to Alley-oop. The only gator folks in Knoxville approve of is fried gator!

UT Roster Boasts Potential Olympian

If Puerto Rico qualifies for the 2016 Olympics, Vols junior Derek Reese may be boarding a flight to Rio. Reese, whose grandparents, Anselmo and Irma Montañez, were born in Puerto Rico, is active in that country’s national program.

He played for Puerto Rico’s Men’s National “B” Team at the 2013 FIBA Stankovic Continental Champions Cup in China.

Michiganders Abound at Tennessee

Each of Tennessee’s “big three” athletic programs prominently feature a Michigan native on the coaching staff. Donnie Tyndall is a native of Grand Rapids. Head football coach Butch Jones hails from Saugatuck. And longtime assistant women’s basketball coach Dean Lockwood is from Bay City.

TENNESSEE BASKETBALL TAKING CHARGE • Junior Armani Moore is Tennessee’s active leader in charges drawn, with 11 in his career. He has drawn three this season.

• Freshman forward Jabari McGhee also has three drawn charges this season, tying Moore for most on the team.

FOUR SCHOLARSHIP RETURNEES, PROGRAM-RECORD EIGHT SCHOLARSHIP NEWCOMERS • Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall’s first season on Rocky Top signals the addition of eight scholarship newcomers, which marks the most in program history (previous high was seven).

• The Vols return only four scholarship players: senior guard Josh Richardson, junior forward Armani Moore, junior forward Derek Reese and sophomore guard Robert Hubbs III. Hubbs appeared in only 12 games last season, as his debut campaign was cut short by a shoulder injury that required surgery.

• Among SEC teams, Tennessee’s nine newcomers (includes one walk-on) ties Missouri for the most in the league. UT’s four returning lettermen tie Missouri and Texas A&M for fewest among SEC teams.

• Richardson is the only returner who started any games last season (36), while Moore started 16 games as a freshman in 2012-13.

HOWARD RESIGNS; BRADEN RISES • Tennessee assistant coach Adam Howard resigned Monday, Nov. 24, for personal reasons, effective immediately. Beau Braden has been elevated from his video coordinator role and has assumed Howard’s coaching duties.

FAST BREAK Detrick Mostella’s 17-point Tennessee debut equaled the debut scoring output of former All-Americans Allan Houston (1989) and Ron Slay (1999) and marked the most points by a Vol in his debut since current Orlando Magic star Tobias Harris debuted with 18 points against Belmont Nov. 12, 2010.

RICHARDSON LOOKING TO JOIN 1,000-POINT CLUB • Senior guard Josh Richardson needs just 182 points to become the 47th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club.

• Richardson scored a career-high 381 points last season, and he totaled 261 as a sophomore starter in 2012-13. He appeared in all 34 games as a freshman in 2011-12, scoring 97 points.

• Richardson has started 74 of Tennessee’s last 75 games spanning the past three seasons.

RICHARDSON AMONG SEC’s ELITE ROSTER BREAKDOWN • The Vols’ 2014-15 roster features 15 players (12 scholarship student-athletes) representing nine states.

• A native of Apopka, Fla. (less than 20 miles north of Orlando), Carmichael has established a reputation as an eager learner whose motor never stops when he is on the court and a tenacious rebounder who collects boards even outside his area.

• Tyndall has even gone on record stating that Carmichael, at this early stage in his career, reminds him of a young Kenneth Faried, who Tyndall coached at Morehead State.

• Carmichael initially signed with Tyndall at Southern Miss before following Tyndall to Tennessee.

• Donnie Tyndall announced Nov. 12 that Shembari Phillips and Admiral Schofield have signed NLIs to attend UT and join the Vols as freshmen next year.

• The 6-4, 185-pound Phillips is currently a senior at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Ga. • Phillips attended Tucker High School last season, where he averaged 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

• Schofield, a 6-6, 220-pound combo forward, attends Zion-Benton Township High School in Zion, Ill. • As a junior last season, Schofield earned honorable mention All-State honors from the Champaign-Urbana News Gazette after averaging 16 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

• The aggressive, matchup-zone defensive system employed by coach Donnie Tyndall led to both of his Southern Miss teams ranking among the Division I leaders in steals each of the past two seasons.

• In 2012-13, Southern Miss ranked fifth nationally with an average of 9.6 steals per game. In 2013-14, Tyndall’s Conference USA championship team ranked 17th nationally with 8.2 steals per game.

• This season, Tennessee averages 7.2 steals per game.

POINT GUARD STORYLINES • UT entered the Donnie Tyndall era without the benefit of having a healthy, “true” point guard on its roster.

• Senior wing Josh Richardson made his point guard debut as a Vol Nov. 14 vs. VCU. Throughout much of the preseason, Richardson was expected to serve as the backup at the point, but Tyndall ultimately decided that Richardson was the team’s best option at that critical position.

• Junior-college transfer Kevin Punter, a career twoguard, spent much of the preseason learning the position for the first time. Punter likely will see some minutes at the point guard spot, as he made noticeable strides during his preseason “audition.”

• Senior guard Brandon Lopez, a walk-on from Knoxville, is perhaps the most natural “true point guard” on the roster, but he suffered a torn ACL July 26 and underwent surgery Aug. 14. It is expected that he will miss the entire season.

• At the time of his injury, Tyndall stated that Lopez was in the mix to compete for the starting job.

• Graduate transfer Ian Chiles, who joined the Vols this summer following an impressive career at IUPUI, also was being looked upon to shoulder part of the load at the point, but Chiles has battled nagging injuries ever since enrolling at UT (hernia surgery, shoulder, ankle and toe injuries).

TYNDALL WANTS VOLS TO OVERACHIEVE • First-year head coach Donnie Tyndall has preached a mantra of “overachieving” to his 2014-15 squad, and he hopes the UT fans will help give the Vols an edge.

• Tyndall: “(I want our fans to) help us be the most overachieving team in college basketball. That’s our goal. And I don’t want to say that to undersell our talent level or our players, but we need to overachieve this year to have a good year, and our fans need to help us do that.”

HUBBS HEALTHY • Sophomore guard Robert Hubbs III entered this season with a clean bill of health after appearing in just 12 games as a true freshman last year (the first 12 games of the season).

• Hubbs underwent season-ending surgery on his left shoulder Jan. 14, 2014, to address an injury dating to his senior year in high school. The Newbern, Tenn., native received full medical clearance this summer.

• In his limited action last year, during which he wore a soft shoulder brace, Hubbs averaged 5.0 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting .281 from 3-point range.

With high-scoring teammates, Woods set the UT single-season record for total assists (227) and assists per game (8.73).

The 2014-15 season marks the 40th anniversary of the highest-scoring team in school history. Head coach Ray Mears’ 1974-75 squad averaged 86.6 points per game (2,251 points in 26 games).

Highest Individual Scoring Average

It was also 40 years ago that a member of that team, Hall of Famer Bernard King, set the school record for single-season scoring average. The legendary Vol averaged 26.4 ppg – as a freshman.

Highest Individual Assists Average

That 1974-75 season was a good year to be a Tennessee point guard, and Rodney Woods capitalized.

With weapons like Bernard King, Ernie Grunfeld and Mike Jackson flanking him, Woods, a senior, set the UT single-season record for total assists (227) and assists per game (8.73).

Best Team Rebounding Margin

Fifty years ago, head coach Ray Mears put together one of the school’s top-rebounding teams. The 196465 Vols boasted the best rebounding margin in program history, out-rebounding opponents by 16.7 rpg.

Highest-Scoring Debut by a Vol

In Bernard King’s college debut – the 40th anniversary of which takes place Nov. 30, 2014 – he dropped 42 points on Wisconsin-Milwaukee. That still stands as a record for most points in a Tennessee debut.

UPCOMING SCHEDULING NOTES • With the launch of the SEC Network, the scheduling of midweek games has been adjusted. In addition to the traditional Tuesday night games on ESPN and ESPNU, there will also be two Tuesday games on the SEC Network. Wednesdays will feature two contests on the SEC Network, while Thursdays will highlight one game on either ESPN or ESPN2.

• And after not playing in Knoxville last season for the first time since 1953, Kentucky returns to Rocky Top Feb. 17 for an ESPN “Super Tuesday” matchup. The Vols do not play at Rupp Arena this season, marking UT’s first hoops campaign without a trip to Lexington, Ky., since 1953.

• Texas A&M handed the Big Orange a pair of heartbreaking, buzzer-beater losses last season. That series resumes Jan. 24 in Knoxville when the Aggies visit Thompson-Boling Arena.

• Former UT coach Bruce Pearl (2005-11) returns to Thompson-Boling Arena as Auburn’s coach Jan. 31.

• For the first time since 1964, Georgia does not visit Knoxville. The Bulldogs host Tennessee Feb. 7.

The Vols spent their summer working intensely with first-year strength and conditioning coach Todd Moyer, who tracked each player’s development throughout the summer.

Junior forward Armani Moore finished the summer owning “team bests” in the 185-pound bench press (17 reps) and body-weight chin-ups (18 reps). Sophomore forward Dominic Woodson shared bench-press honors with Moore by also hoisting 17 reps.

TENNESSEE PART OF 2016 MAUI FIELD • Tennessee will join Chaminade (host school), UConn, Georgetown, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Oregon and Wisconsin in the 2016 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational field.

• It will be UT’s third all-time appearance at the Maui Invitational. The Vols also played in the event in 2004 (fourth place) and 2011 (seventh place).

TYNDALL’S TEAM POST SOLID RPIs • In his two seasons at Southern Miss, first-year UT head coach Donnie Tyndall’s teams turned in yearend RPIs of No. 27 in 2013 and No. 29 in 2014.

• In his last six seasons as a head coach, Tyndall’s teams have an average year-end RPI of 87.5. And that’s while competing in “mid-major” leagues such as the Ohio Valley Conference and Conference USA. • Tennessee’s average year-end RPI the last six years has been 45.5.

True freshman forward Willie Carmichael III showed the team’s biggest improvement in the bench press, increasing his max reps by 10 through the course of summer workouts. Carmichael also added a team-best 11.6 pounds of muscle over June and July.

TYNDALL, MOORE FINALLY TOGETHER • Junior forward Armani Moore signed with Tennessee in April 2012. But during his recruitment, he gave serious consideration to several schools.

• One of the other programs recruiting Moore during his high school days was Morehead State and head coach Donnie Tyndall.

• When Tyndall took the Tennessee job in April 2014, one returning Vol—Moore—was already familiar with Tyndall and assured his UT teammates that the Big 2014-15 Tennessee Basketball Orange landed both a good man and a good coach.

True freshman guard Detrick Mostella posted the team’s highest “standing” vertical jump, leaping 33 inches.

The top “max” vertical jump went to fellow freshman Jabari McGhee, who rose 40.5 inches.

That marked a two-inch personal improvement from the beginning of summer workouts.

• Kenneth Faried, one of the NBA’s biggest young stars, was recruited and coached by Donnie Tyndall at Morehead State.

• This past summer, Faried—known as “The Manimal”—led the U.S. National Team to gold at the FIBA World Cup. • The Denver Nuggets signed Faried to a five-year, $60 million contract extension in October.

FAST BREAK Tennessee has produced 45 all-time NBA Draft picks, including eight first-rounders. Two Vols were selected in the 2014 NBA Draft, as Jarnell Stokes was picked 35th, and Jordan McRae was taken 58th.

TENNESSEE AD HART A TRUE BASKETBALL MAN • Tennessee Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Dave Hart is a true “basketball man,” as he played collegiately at Alabama.

• A 1971 Alabama graduate, Hart played under legendary head coach C.M. Newton and earned a master’s degree from UA in 1972 while working as a graduate assistant basketball coach.

• Hart is the only AD in the SEC who was a college basketball player.

TWO VOLS TAKEN IN D-LEAGUE DRAFT • Former Vols forward Kenny Hall (2009-13) was selected by the Deleware 87ers in the fourth round of the NBA D-League Draft Nov. 1. Hall was the first player selected in the fourth round (55th overall).

• Another former UT forward, Renaldo Woolridge (2008-12), was selected in the fourth round by the Grand Rapids Drive (59th overall).

UP NEXT: BUTLER • The Vols host Butler next Sunday, Dec. 14, at Thompson-Boling Arena at 2 p.m. ET (ESPNU).

• Butler is off to a 5-1 start this season under the direction of interim head coach Chris Holtmann. The Bulldogs finished third at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, with wins over North Carolina and Georgetown.

• Tennessee trails its all-time series with Butler 2-1, dating to 1958. Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign.

Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena.

The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities.

The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room.

The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs.

New to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.

And in March of 2014, TBA became the third college arena to install an LED lighting system (joining Arizona State and Notre Dame).

• Earlier this fall, every player on the Tennessee roster was presented with a custom, personalized “dog tag” necklace that is incribed on one side with the phrase “Tennessee Basketball #Family,” along with the player’s name and jersey number. • Graduated from Northview High School in Grand Rapids, Mich., and played one season of junior-college basketball in Fort Dodge, Iowa, before transferring to Morehead State to join its basketball program from 1990-93.

AS A COACH

• His first job in the SEC came as an assistant at LSU under John Brady (1997-01). At 25-years-old when he took that job, Tyndall was the league’s youngest assistant coach.

• As a head coach, Tyndall has led his teams to one regular-season conference title (2014 Conference USA Championship) and a pair of conference tournament crowns (2009 & 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championships).

• Tennessee opened the 2014-15 season with an 85-69 defeat at the hands of 15th-ranked VCU Nov. 14 in the Veterans Classic at the U.S. Naval Academy.

• The game marked the regular-season debut for Donnie Tyndall as the Vols’ head coach.

• Down by as many as 20, Tennessee cut its deficit to eight points on several occasions late in the second half, but couldn’t get any closer.

• VCU’s full-court pressure forced the Vols into 19 turnovers, which the Rams converted into 26 points.

• Tennessee’s Robert Hubbs III, Kevin Punter and Derek Reese made their first career starts. Despite fouling out, Punter finished with eight points, five rebounds and a gamehigh seven assists.

• Senior Josh Richardson catapulted the Vols to a 14-0 run to open the second half as UT rallied from a 30-27 halftime deficit to build a 41-30 lead midway through the second half.

• Junior Armani Moore had a career-high 18 points and six rebounds, while Richardson scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half.

• Jabari McGhee had an all-around game with eight points, a game-high nine rebounds and two steals. He also drew a charge.

• The Vols were led by Armani Moore, who had the first double-double of his career with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He was the Vols’ only scorer or rebounder in double-figures.

• The Vols came out on fire, scoring the game’s first nine points. But, Tennessee was outscored 67-50 over the final 37 minutes. Marquette led 35-30 at halftime.

• Down eight early in the second half, the Vols rallied to within one at 44-43 on Detrick Mostella’s first bucket of the game—a 3-pointer with 10:35 remaining. Duane Wilson then answered for Marquette with consecutive 3-pointers to return the Golden Eagles’ lead to seven, 50-43 with nine minutes left.

• Marquette redshirt freshmen Wilson topped the Golden Eagles’ scoring chart with a career-high 30 points as he connected on 5-of-9 from 3-point range.
