TENNESSEE BASKETBALL

BY THE NUMBERS

28

» During his two-year tenure at Southern Miss, Donnie Tyndall averaged 28 wins per season. The Golden Eagles won 27 games in 2012-13 and 29 games in 2013-14.

1

» That’s how many players on Tennessee’s roster have ever scored in double figures in an SEC game. Josh Richardson is the only Vol to have done so.

TEAM NOTES ABOUT BUTLER • Butler is off to an 8-1 start this season under the direction of interim head coach Chris Holtmann. The Bulldogs finished third at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, with wins over North Carolina and Georgetown. • Butler is ranked 15th in this week’s AP poll (up from 23rd last week) and 19th in the coaches’ poll. • Tennessee trails its all-time series with Butler 2-1, dating to 1958. The Vols won the most recent meeting 76-71, in overtime, in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. • Tennessee and Butler are two of only 13 programs in the nation to make at least four NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in the last eight seasons. The Bulldogs made consecutive national championship game appearances in 2010 and 2011, falling to Duke and UConn, respectively. • To complete this two-game, home-and-home contract, UT will play at Butler’s historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on Dec. 12, 2015, in Indianapolis, Ind.

FAST BREAK Tennessee is one of only 13 programs in the nation to make at least four NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in the last eight seasons.

“QUOTABLE” #21 Jabari McGhee

“That’s what coach recruited me for—to get rebounds. I’m not a scorer. My job is to get rebounds, and I know that. So as long as I know my role, I’ll be fine.” Vols barely won a game they at times threatened to turn into an East Regional rout. • Tennessee scored 38 points in the paint, had five players with multiple fouls by halftime and made only two 3-pointers in the final 40 minutes against the Bulldogs. • The Vols scored six straight points inside after the Bulldogs took their first lead in the final two minutes of overtime, including point guard Ramar Smith’s basket with 27 seconds left to make it 72-68. • Butler’s Pete Campbell followed a missed shot to make it 72-70 with 16 seconds left. • Wayne Chism led foul-plagued Tennessee with 16 points, while Tyler Smith added 15 and eight rebounds and JaJuan Smith had 11. J.P. Prince had nine points, seven rebounds, five assists—and six of the Vols’ 20 turnovers. • A.J. Graves led Butler with 21 points. • Tennessee went on to lose to third-seeded Louisville 79-60 four days later in Charlotte, N.C.

GRUELING GAUNTLET

KANSAS STATE RECAP • Tennessee’s defense keyed a big non-conference victory, as the Vols took down Kansas State, 65-64, Saturday in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. • Kansas State’s Marcus Foster (game-high 23 points) nailed four 3-pointers in the final 57 seconds to nearly bring the Wildcats back after a 10-point deficit in the final minute. But the Vols held on for Donnie Tyndall’s first-career win over a Big 12 team. • K-State committed 22 turnovers as the Vols came away with 12 steals. The 22 turnovers were the most by a Vols’ opponent since North Carolina A&T had 34 in 2009. Tennessee also blocked nine shots. • Senior Josh Richardson led the Vols with 17 points. Junior Armani Moore stuffed the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, a career-high five assists and a career-high five blocks. Freshmen Willie Carmichael III had the best game in his young career with nine points and six rebounds. • Kansas State was within five at 50-45 with 6:22 remaining, but the Wildcats missed their next three shots and turned the ball over three times in a span of two minutes as the Vols took advantage. • In holding K-State to 17 points at the half, the Vols had their best defensive first half since leading Presbyterian, 43-13, on Dec. 18, 2012.

• With Tennessee hosting 15th-ranked Butler Sunday, the Vols’ first seven games will feature three opponents ranked in the Associated Press Top-25 poll at tipoff time. • Tennessee already has faced then-15th-ranked VCU (Nov. 14) and then-11th-ranked Kansas (Nov. 28) on neutral floors. • The last time UT’s schedule has featured at least three top-15 opponents in the first seven games: 1992-93, when coach Wade Houston’s Vols played No. 6 Seton Hall, No. 8 Memphis State and No. 15 Syracuse. Tennessee went 1-2 in that stretch, defeating Memphis State (now Memphis).

LAST MEETING WITH BUTLER

• The Vols rank fourth the nation in fouls per game, with an average of 25.0. • Through just six games, Tennessee has had seven “player disqualifications” for fouling out. • The school record for DQs in a season is 24, which has happened three times (1962, 1977, 1978).

• The second-seeded Volunteers got physical during a second-round NCAA Tournament win over Butler on March 23, 2008, in Birmingham, Ala. • UT posted a 76-71 overtime triumph to advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the second straight season. • Vols senior JaJuan Smith hit four straight free throws in the final 13.6 seconds of overtime, and the

NOBODY DOES MOORE • Junior “human multi-tool” Armani Moore is one of the SEC’s most versatile players, and he is thriving under first-year UT head coach Donnie Tyndall. • Moore has started every game and leads the Vols in rebounding (6.7 rpg, 9th in the SEC), offensive rebounding (2.8 orpg) and blocks (1.5 bpg). • Moore also has set career-highs in every statistical category already this season.

EACH MAN HAS FIVE TO GIVE

5

» That’s how many different starting lineups Donnie Tyndall has used with the Vols this season. No single unit has started consecutive games.

DID

YOU KNOW? Tyndall is a Sneakerhead

Donnie Tyndall has a vast personal collection of close to 500 pairs of sneakers. “I’ve always been a shoe fanatic,” Tyndall said. “I remember my mom and dad would give me a hundred dollars the week before school started and I had to make that work for my clothes. So usually it was three pairs of jeans and three shirts. But one year, they gave me a hundred bucks and the brand-new Jordans came out like the day before and I spent all hundred bucks on those.”

DT Likes Gators?!

Ever since he was a kid, Donnie Tyndall has been fascinated by alligators. He particularly enjoyed watching TV shows about gators. When he was the head coach at Southern Miss, his family surprised him with an actual pet alligator. The gator’s name: Alley-oop. Tyndall eventually had to say goodbye to Alley-oop. The only gator folks in Knoxville approve of is fried gator!

UT Roster Boasts Potential Olympian

If Puerto Rico qualifies for the 2016 Olympics, Vols junior Derek Reese may be boarding a flight to Rio. Reese, whose grandparents, Anselmo and Irma Montañez, were born in Puerto Rico, is active in that country’s national program. He played for Puerto Rico’s Men’s National “B” Team at the 2013 FIBA Stankovic Continental Champions Cup in China.

Michiganders Abound at Tennessee

Each of Tennessee’s “big three” athletic programs prominently feature a Michigan native on the coaching staff. Donnie Tyndall is a native of Grand Rapids. Head football coach Butch Jones hails from Saugatuck. And longtime assistant women’s basketball coach Dean Lockwood is from Bay City.

TENNESSEE BASKETBALL HOME WIN STREAK = FIVE GAMES • Dating to last season, Tennessee has won five straight home games at Thompson-Boling Arena. • Third-ranked Florida was the last visitor to escape Knoxville with a victory, as the Gators posted a 6758 win on Feb. 11, 2014. • The Vols have won nine straight home games against unranked opponents.

McGHEE EXTENDING POSSESSIONS • Through his first six college games, freshman Jabari McGhee is averaging 2.7 offensive rebounds, which ranks tied for eighth in the SEC. • 16 of his 26 total rebounds have come on the offensive glass (61.5 percent). The 16 offensive boards ranks second on the team behind only junior Armani Moore (17). • McGhee is averaging 12.1 total rebounds per 40 minutes and 7.4 offensive rebounds per 40 minutes. He is playing 14.3 minutes per game.

GOOD TO BE HOME IN DECEMBER • Tennessee has won 11 of its last 12 December home games, dating to Dec. 20, 2011. • The lone loss during that span came last season when the Vols suffered a 65-58 setback to NC State (Dec. 18, 2013).

WELCOME TO THE BIG STAGE • Six Vols made their Division I debuts last month. • Four Tennessee true freshmen—Willie Carmichael III, Jabari McGhee, Detrick Mostella and Tariq Owens—made their college debut on national television vs. 15th-ranked VCU Nov. 14. • Junior-college transfer Kevin Punter, a junior, also made his Division I debut against the Rams. And on Nov. 20 against Texas Southern, fellow juco transfer Devon Baulkman made his debut as a Vol.

FAST BREAK Detrick Mostella’s 17-point Tennessee debut equaled the debut scoring output of former All-Americans Allan Houston (1989) and Ron Slay (1999) and marked the most points by a Vol in his debut since current Orlando Magic star Tobias Harris debuted with 18 points against Belmont Nov. 12, 2010.

MICROWAVE MOSTELLA • Offensively, true freshman wing Detrick Mostella has displayed an ability to heat up quickly for UT. • Mostella leads the team in field-goal attempts per 40 minutes this season, averaging 16.4 (10.5 of those attempts are 3-pointers). • Mostella is Tennessee’s top bench scorer (7.7 ppg), and his .320 3-point percentage ranks on the team. • Tennessee has played a pair of top-15 teams away from home this season, and Mostella averaged 15.0 points per game in those contests.

CARMICHAEL’S MOTOR NEVER STOPS VOLS PICKED 13th IN SEC • Tennessee was predicted to finish 13th in the 2015 SEC race by an SEC and national media voting panel.

RICHARDSON LOOKING TO JOIN 1,000-POINT CLUB • Senior guard Josh Richardson needs just 165 points to become the 47th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club. • Richardson scored a career-high 381 points last season, and he totaled 261 as a sophomore starter in 2012-13. He appeared in all 34 games as a freshman in 2011-12, scoring 97 points. • Richardson has started 75 of Tennessee’s last 76 games spanning the past three seasons.

RICHARDSON AMONG SEC’s ELITE • Josh Richardson is the only player in the SEC to rank among the league’s active career top-10 in each of the following statistical categories: points, blocks, steals and assists. • Richardson ranks sixth in points (835), fifth in blocks (78), sixth in steals (88) and ninth in assists (143).

• True freshman forward Willie Carmichael III has earned a starting assignment for five of UT’s six games so far this season, and he averages 4.2 points and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 56 percent • Tyndall has gone on record stating that Carmichael, at this early stage in his career, reminds him of a young Kenneth Faried, who Tyndall coached at Morehead State. • Carmichael initially signed with Tyndall at Southern Miss before following Tyndall to Tennessee.

TENNESSEE OWNS THIRD-MOST WINS IN SEC LAST FIVE YEARS • Dating to the beginning of the 2009-10 season, Tennessee has the third-highest win total among all programs in the SEC (overall and in league play). ¢ TOTAL WINS SINCE 2009-10

FAST BREAK During his two years at Southern Miss, coach Donnie Tyndall led the Golden Eagles to 27 total wins away from home (away/neutral site).

POINT GUARD STORYLINES • UT entered the Donnie Tyndall era without the benefit of having a healthy, “true” point guard on its roster. • Senior wing Josh Richardson made his point guard debut as a Vol Nov. 14 vs. VCU. Throughout much of the preseason, Richardson was expected to serve as the backup at the point, but Tyndall ultimately decided that Richardson was the team’s best option at that critical position. • Junior-college transfer Kevin Punter, a career twoguard, spent much of the preseason learning the position for the first time. Punter likely will see some minutes at the point guard spot, as he made noticeable strides during his preseason “audition.” • Senior guard Brandon Lopez, a walk-on from Knoxville, is perhaps the most natural “true point guard” on the roster, but he suffered a torn ACL July 26 and underwent surgery Aug. 14. It is expected that he will miss the entire season. • At the time of his injury, Tyndall stated that Lopez was in the mix to compete for the starting job. • Graduate transfer Ian Chiles, who joined the Vols this summer following an impressive career at IUPUI, also was being looked upon to shoulder part of the load at the point, but Chiles has battled nagging injuries ever since enrolling at UT (hernia surgery, shoulder, ankle and toe injuries).

FOUR SCHOLARSHIP RETURNEES, PROGRAM-RECORD EIGHT SCHOLARSHIP NEWCOMERS • Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall’s first season on Rocky Top signals the addition of eight scholarship newcomers, which marks the most in program history (previous high was seven). • The Vols return only four scholarship players: senior guard Josh Richardson, junior forward Armani Moore, junior forward Derek Reese and sophomore guard Robert Hubbs III. Hubbs appeared in only 12 games last season, as his debut campaign was cut short by a shoulder injury that required surgery. • Among SEC teams, Tennessee’s nine newcomers (includes one walk-on) ties Missouri for the most in the league. UT’s four returning lettermen tie Missouri and Texas A&M for fewest among SEC teams.

• Richardson is the only returner who started any games last season (36), while Moore started 16 games as a freshman in 2012-13.

VOLS SIGN PHILLIPS, SCHOFIELD • Donnie Tyndall announced Nov. 12 that Shembari Phillips and Admiral Schofield have signed NLIs to attend UT and join the Vols as freshmen next year. • The 6-4, 185-pound Phillips is currently a senior at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Ga. • Phillips attended Tucker High School last season, where he averaged 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. • Schofield, a 6-6, 220-pound combo forward, attends Zion-Benton Township High School in Zion, Ill. • As a junior last season, Schofield earned honorable mention All-State honors from the Champaign-Urbana News Gazette after averaging 16 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

TYNDALL WANTS VOLS TO OVERACHIEVE • First-year head coach Donnie Tyndall has preached a mantra of “overachieving” to his 2014-15 squad, and he hopes the UT fans will help give the Vols an edge. • Tyndall: “(I want our fans to) help us be the most overachieving team in college basketball. That’s our goal. And I don’t want to say that to undersell our talent level or our players, but we need to overachieve this year to have a good year, and our fans need to help us do that.”

HUBBS HEALTHY • Sophomore guard Robert Hubbs III entered this season with a clean bill of health after appearing in just 12 games as a true freshman last year (the first 12 games of the season). • Hubbs underwent season-ending surgery on his left shoulder Jan. 14, 2014, to address an injury dating to his senior year in high school. The Newbern, Tenn., native received full medical clearance this summer. • In his limited action last year, during which he wore a soft shoulder brace, Hubbs averaged 5.0 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting .281 from 3-point range.

(L to R) Rodney Woods, Bernard King and Ernie Grunfield were part of a prolific 1974-75 squad. With high-scoring teammates, Woods set the UT single-season record for total assists (227) and assists per game (8.73).

Highest-Scoring Team

The 2014-15 season marks the 40th anniversary of the highest-scoring team in school history. Head coach Ray Mears’ 1974-75 squad averaged 86.6 points per game (2,251 points in 26 games).

Highest Individual Scoring Average

It was also 40 years ago that a member of that team, Hall of Famer Bernard King, set the school record for single-season scoring average. The legendary Vol averaged 26.4 ppg – as a freshman.

Highest Individual Assists Average

That 1974-75 season was a good year to be a Tennessee point guard, and Rodney Woods capitalized. With weapons like Bernard King, Ernie Grunfeld and Mike Jackson flanking him, Woods, a senior, set the UT single-season record for total assists (227) and assists per game (8.73).

Best Team Rebounding Margin

Fifty years ago, head coach Ray Mears put together one of the school’s top-rebounding teams. The 196465 Vols boasted the best rebounding margin in program history, out-rebounding opponents by 16.7 rpg.

Highest-Scoring Debut by a Vol

In Bernard King’s college debut – the 40th anniversary of which takes place Nov. 30, 2014 – he dropped 42 points on Wisconsin-Milwaukee. That still stands as a record for most points in a Tennessee debut.

HOWARD RESIGNS; BRADEN RISES • Tennessee assistant coach Adam Howard resigned Monday, Nov. 24, for personal reasons, effective immediately. Beau Braden was then elevated from his video coordinator role to assume Howard’s coaching duties. • It’s a familiar role for Braden, who spent the previous two seasons as a full-time assistant coach at Morehead State.

Tyndall: “The nuts and bolts of it are Louisville’s matchup zone. And we just tweaked some things. Even (after Kenneth Faried left Morehead State), I liked it so much we stayed with it.” “QUOTABLE”

Jay Bilas, ESPN “I were a coaching in college now, I would give an awful lot of consideration to playing a zone as a primary defense. I really do think (teams have to) spend so much time preparing for (that zone), that you might not be as proficient in doing what you do. Teams like Syracuse and Louisville, they can really take teams out of what they do and force them to play your way. You’re making a team play in a manner they don’t usually play or want to play. So I think Donnie’s system will work really well if he gets the right personnel.”

TENNESSEE BASKETBALL

“DO WHAT YOU DO, AND DO IT WELL.” THE BIRTH OF TYNDALL’S ZONE • In 2007, with a young Kenneth Faried on his roster at Morehead State, Donnie Tyndall was racking his brain for a way to keep Faried close to the basket on defense. The future NBA All-Star was such a force in the paint in the OVC that opponents went to great lengths to lure him out of the paint. • One common tactic saw opposing teams simply take their center and use him to set ball-screens out front, effectively sacrificing their own big man to try and neutralize Faried. • Said Tyndall: “What teams we’re doing to Kenneth Faried was the biggest impetus for me moving to the matchup zone. He was constantly getting dragged out 25 feet from the rim, hedging ball screens, and good coaches were telling their five men to do that, to drag him out there and try to wear him down or get him to pick up a cheap foul.” • “So protecting Kenneth was the main reason for going in that direction initially, but it’s just continued to evolve over the years as we’ve changed things and tweaked different things inside the scheme. We’ve changed some rules about how we’ve guarded certain actions after seeing some things we didn’t respond well to.”

FAST BREAK In the semifinals of the Orlando Classic, Tennessee forced 11th-ranked Kansas to make 11 second-half turnovers (16 total).

“QUOTABLE”

Drew Kelly, former player

“The general principles aren’t difficult to learn, because it’s just like man. Where it’s different is that your help is all based on zone principles with rules and scripts for every kind of situation.”

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE • UT has forced more turnovers than it has committed in four of its six games this season. • The Vols force opponents into 15.2 turnovers per game while committing only 12.3. • Tennessee’s turnover percentage of 23.9 ranks 31st nationally.

STEALS PREVALENT IN TYNDALL’S SYSTEM • The aggressive, matchup-zone defensive system employed by coach Donnie Tyndall led to both of his Southern Miss teams ranking among the Division I leaders in steals each of the past two seasons. • In 2012-13, Southern Miss ranked fifth nationally with an average of 9.6 steals per game. In 2013-14, Tyndall’s Conference USA championship team ranked 17th nationally with 8.2 steals per game. • This season, Tennessee averages 8.0 steals per game, which ranks 63rd nationally.

TAKING CHARGE QUICK DEFENSIVE NOTES • Through six games, the Vols are forcing 15.2 turnovers per game (leading to 16.8 ppg) and are averaging 8.0 steals and 4.2 blocks per game. • Tennessee has drawn nine total charges this season. • UT also has forced four shot-clock violations and one 10-second call. • The Vols held Kansas State without a field goal for a span of 11:27 during the first half of UT’s win over the Wildcats (12/6/14). • UT also forced 22 turnovers against K-State while logging 12 steals and nine blocks. Armani Moore had five of those blocks, marking a career-high. • Tennessee forced 15th-ranked VCU to commit 18 turnovers when the teams met to open the season at The Veterans Classic at the U.S. Naval Academy (11/14/14). • SEC All-Defensive Team member Josh Richardson blocked three shots in the opener vs. VCU. • Three Vols logged multiple steals in UT’s homeopening win over Texas Southern (11/20/14).

• Freshman forward Jabari McGhee has a team-leading four drawn charges this season. • Junior Armani Moore is Tennessee’s active leader in charges drawn, with 11 in his career. He has drawn three this year. • As a team, the Vols have taken nine charges this season.

10:04 SCORELESS! During Tennessee’s 64-57 victory over Santa Clara in the opening round of the 2014 Orlando Classic at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports, the Volunteers held the Broncos scoreless for a span 10:04. The drought spanned the final 27 seconds of the first half and the first 9:37 of the second half. During that stretch, Santa Clara went 0-for-8 from the floor and committed three turnovers.

RICHARDSON KNOWN FOR DEFENSE • Given the emphasis that coach Donnie Tyndall places on defense, it’s fitting that Tennessee’s best player and team co-captain, senior Josh Richardson, has built a reputation as an elite defender. • Richardson made the 2014 SEC All-Defensive Team as a junior. • Richardson is 12 blocks shy of breaking into UT’s alltime top-10 list for career blocks. He needs 90 to tie for 10th, and he currently has 78.

“QUOTABLE”

Gary Parrish, CBSsports.com “Josh Richardson got a lot of attention last March based on him averaging 19 points per game in the NCAA Tournament while UT made the Sweet Sixteen. But his best attribute, the one that might give him a chance to play in the NBA, is his ability to guard on the perimeter. He’s 6-foot-6 and active with long arms. Just a terrific piece for Donnie Tyndall to inherit.”

UPCOMING SCHEDULING NOTES • With the launch of the SEC Network, the scheduling of midweek games has been adjusted. In addition to the traditional Tuesday night games on ESPN and ESPNU, there will also be two Tuesday games on the SEC Network. Wednesdays will feature two contests on the SEC Network, while Thursdays will highlight one game on either ESPN or ESPN2. • And after not playing in Knoxville last season for the first time since 1953, Kentucky returns to Rocky Top Feb. 17 for an ESPN “Super Tuesday” matchup. The Vols do not play at Rupp Arena this season, marking UT’s first hoops campaign without a trip to Lexington, Ky., since 1953. • Texas A&M handed the Big Orange a pair of heartbreaking, buzzer-beater losses last season. That series resumes Jan. 24 in Knoxville when the Aggies visit Thompson-Boling Arena. • Former UT coach Bruce Pearl (2005-11) returns to Thompson-Boling Arena as Auburn’s coach Jan. 31. • For the first time since 1964, Georgia does not visit Knoxville. The Bulldogs host Tennessee Feb. 7.

FASTER

STRONGER HARD WORK BEATS TALENT WHEN TALENT FAILS TO WORK HARD. Strength & Conditioing Notes

The Vols spent their summer working intensely with first-year strength and conditioning coach Todd Moyer, who tracked each player’s development throughout the summer. Junior forward Armani Moore finished the summer owning “team bests” in the 185-pound bench press (17 reps) and body-weight chin-ups (18 reps). Sophomore forward Dominic Woodson shared bench-press honors with Moore by also hoisting 17 reps.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN

“QUOTABLE”

Donnie Tyndall, Head Coach “(Armani Moore) is an energy guy. He gets deflections that lead to steals. He comes over and blocks shots on the weak side. He is just a complete guy. I wish he was 6-8 instead of 6-4.”

TYNDALL, MOORE FINALLY TOGETHER • Junior forward Armani Moore signed with Tennessee in April 2012. But during his recruitment, he gave serious consideration to several schools. • One of the other programs recruiting Moore during his high school days was Morehead State and head coach Donnie Tyndall. • When Tyndall took the Tennessee job in April 2014, one returning Vol—Moore—was already familiar with Tyndall and assured his UT teammates that the Big Orange landed both a good man and a good coach.

• The Vols’ 2014-15 roster features 15 players (12 scholarship student-athletes) representing nine states. • There are four Vols who hail from the state of Tennessee, three from Georgia, and a pair of players from Florida. Alabama, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma and Texas also are represented. • Tennessee has three seniors, five juniors, two sophomores and five freshmen. • Eight Vols stand 6-5 or shorter, and seven players are 6-6 or taller.

True freshman forward Willie Carmichael III showed the team’s biggest improvement in the bench press, increasing his max reps by 10 through the course of summer workouts. Carmichael also added a team-best 11.6 pounds of muscle over June and July.

TYNDALL’S TEAM POST SOLID RPIs • In his two seasons at Southern Miss, first-year UT head coach Donnie Tyndall’s teams turned in yearend RPIs of No. 27 in 2013 and No. 29 in 2014. • In his last six seasons as a head coach, Tyndall’s teams have an average year-end RPI of 87.5. And that’s while competing in “mid-major” leagues such as the Ohio Valley Conference and Conference USA. • Tennessee’s average year-end RPI the last six years 2014-15 Tennessee Basketball has been 45.5.

True freshman guard Detrick Mostella posted the team’s highest “standing” vertical jump, leaping 33 inches. The top “max” vertical jump went to fellow freshman Jabari McGhee, who rose 40.5 inches. That marked a two-inch personal improvement from the beginning of summer workouts.

When he gets to that (SEC) logo in the center of the paint and elevates up, he’s almost automatic... (Richardson also) is one of the best on-ball defensive players—not just in the SEC—but maybe in all of college basketball. UT HAS BEATEN SEVERAL NBA STARS

“THE MANIMAL” IS A TYNDALL PUPIL

• Over the last eight years, several of the NBA’s elite stars who didn’t experience many losses during their college days have tasted defeat at the hands of the Volunteers.

• Kenneth Faried, one of the NBA’s biggest young stars, was recruited and coached by Donnie Tyndall at Morehead State. • This past summer, Faried—known as “The Manimal”—led the U.S. National Team to gold at the FIBA World Cup. • The Denver Nuggets signed Faried to a five-year, $60 million contract extension in October. • Faried’s impressive development under Tyndall shined most during the 2010-11 campaign, as he won his second consecutive OVC Player of the Year award, earned consensus All-American status and broke Tim Duncan’s career NCAA rebounding record before being selected 22nd overall by Denver in the 2011 NBA Draft.

Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena. The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities. The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room. The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs. New to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck. And in March of 2014, TBA became the third college arena to install an LED lighting system (joining Arizona State and Notre Dame).

“QUOTABLE”

Tobias Harris, Orlando Magic forward “Coach Tyndall is the perfect guy for Tennessee basketball. His energy and passion to help the young men in orange on and off the court is what impresses me the most. He wants the best out of everyone around him, which is great to see.”

TYNDALL FOSTERS FAMILY VIBE

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

• One of the key elements of Donnie Tyndall’s coaching philosophy is fostering a family atmosphere within his program. • Earlier this fall, every player on the Tennessee roster was presented with a custom, personalized “dog tag” necklace that is incribed on one side with the phrase “Tennessee Basketball #Family,” along with the player’s name and jersey number. The opposite side is inscribed with one of Tyndall’s favorite acronyms—Humble Appreciative Thankful (HAT).

• During Donnie Tyndall’s career as a head coach, 23 of the 24 players who exhausted their eligibility under him have graduated on time. • A total of 25 Tennessee men’s basketball players have graduated in the last six years. Those players are: Josh Bone, Quinn Cannington, Quinton Chievous, Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism, D’Montre Edwards, John Fields, Melvin Goins, Kenny Hall, Tony Harris, Michael Hubert, Justin Jackson, Chris Lofton, Jeronne Maymon, Skylar McBee, Jordan McRae, Dwight Miller, Rob Murphy, Steven Pearl, J.P. Prince, Tyler Summitt, Cameron Tatum, C.J. Watson, Tanner Wild and Renaldo Woolridge. • Of those 25 graduates in the last six years, 14 went on to sign professional basketball contracts and two have gone into coaching.

DT MAKING REAL OUTREACH EFFORT • Since his hiring on April 22, head coach Donnie Tyndall has made more than 175 appearances and speaking engagements. • From pumping fuel for patrons at a campus gas station, to hosting a charity golf tournament to visiting UT’s fraternities and sororities, Tyndall has made a real effort to reach out and touch Vol fans.

DONNIE, NIKKI ESTABLISH TYNDALL #FAMILY FOUNDATION • Shortly after settling in as Tennessee’s new head coach, Donnie Tyndall, his wife, Nikki, and his daughters, Taylor and Grace, formed The Tyndall #Family Foundation, a pending 501(c)(3) public charity that facilitates the family’s involvement in philanthropic causes throughout Tennessee. • In addition to raising funds to give to nonprofit organizations, The Tyndall #Family Foundation strives to raise the public’s level of awareness regarding philanthropy. One of the goals of the foundation is to encourage members of Tennessee communities, and members of the basketball community, to become involved in and support charitable activity in the greater Knoxville area and the state of Tennessee.

TYNDALL 13th ON TWITTER • With 37,779 followers as of Dec. 9, Vols head coach Donnie Tyndall (@UTCoachTyndall) ranks 13th among the most-followed Division I basketball coaches nationally.

TENNESSEE A.D. HART A TRUE BASKETBALL MAN • Tennessee Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Dave Hart is a true “basketball man,” as he played collegiately at Alabama. • A 1971 Alabama graduate, Hart played under legendary head coach C.M. Newton and earned a master’s degree from UA in 1972 while working as a graduate assistant basketball coach. • Hart is the only AD in the SEC who was a college basketball player.

JR Guard | 6-4 | 180 Bronx, N.Y. | State Fair Community College (Mo.) PUNTER NOTES

• Leads the Vols in assists (2.7 apg) and steals (1.8 spg) and boasts a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio. • Has not connected on a 3-point attempt in the last four games (0-for-10 during that span). • Recorded career-best 14 points vs. Kansas (11/28/14) on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. • Scored eight points and had a team-high seven assists in the Vols’ opener vs. VCU (11/14/14); it was his first game/start as a Vol. • Career shooting guard will be called upon to share some point guard duties (never previously played PG). • Has added 18 pounds of lean muscle mass since enrolling in June. • Developed his quick-stop, pull-up game out of necessity, as his slight frame made it difficult for him to get to the rim when he was growing up playing on the courts of New York City. • Coach Donnie Tyndall has consistently praised Punter’s “professional” work ethic and traininghabits. • Was a first-team junior college All-American last season, averaging 20.3 points per game. • Lives with teammates Devon Baulkman, Braxton Bonds and Dominic Woodson. • Route to Tennessee: Salesian HS > State Fair CC (Mo.) • Majoring in Recreation/Sport Management
