CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

¢ After taking a week off to train in Knoxville, the Tennessee track & field team will return to the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2013 edition of the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships. The majority of the Big Orange was at the championship site just two weeks ago for the Tyson Invitational. Since opening its doors in 2000, this year marks the seventh time the SEC indoor meet will be held at the Randal Tyson Track Center. ¢ Action is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 22 with the men’s heptathlon and the women’s pentathlon. UT will not have any athletes competing in those events. ¢ The meet will begin for the Vols and Lady Vols on Saturday with the men’s weight throw at 11 a.m. ET and the women’s pole vault at 1 p.m. ET. ¢ Tickets are available through the Arkansas ticket office. Reserved tickets are available for $35, while general admission seating is available for $25. Every ticket is good for all three days of the championships.

FOLLOW THE ACTION

¢ Large portions of the 2013 SEC Indoor Track & Field Championship will be streamed live via ESPN3 on WatchESPN.com. The broadcast windows are scheduled for 3:25-8:15 p.m. ET on Saturday and 1:306 p.m. ET on Sunday. ¢ In addition, RazorVision on ArkansasRazorbacks. com will broadcast the remainder of the event for free. ¢ The 2013 SEC Indoor Championship will also air as part of a 90-minute show on ESPNU on Wednesday, March 13 beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET. ¢ Live results and additional information is available on the meet central page at UTSports.com.

¢ The Vols enter the competition in search of their league-leading 19th SEC indoor title. UT and defending champions Arkansas are currently tied for the league lead with 18 titles on the men’s side. The Vols won their last SEC indoor title in 1996. ¢ The Lady Vols will be looking to capture the SEC indoor crown for the fifth time overall and the fourth time in nine years. The UT women last won the event in 2009 and have won it three times under Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark. ¢ The Big Orange women will also look to extend their winning streak in the DMR at the meet. UT has won six-consecutive women’s distance medley relays and set the meet record in 2011 at 11:05.37. Dating back to 2004, the Lady Vols have won eight of the past nine SEC championships in the indoor DMR. ¢ Since 2002, all but one SEC indoor women’s 800m title has gone to either the Lady Vols or LSU. UT won consecutive titles from 2009-11.

NATION’S BEST COMPETITION

¢ The nation’s top team on both the men’s and women’s sides will be in attendance this weekend, as the USTFCCCA has the Arkansas men and LSU women on top of polls. ¢ In total, the meet will feature a nation-leading 11 ranked teams across the two genders. ¢ On the men’s side, three-time defending NCAA Champion Florida is No. 2, Texas A&M is No. 3, LSU is No. 16 and Ole Miss checks in at No. 19 nationally. ¢ On the women’s side, five SEC teams are ranked among the nation’s top 10, led by No. 1 LSU. Arkansas is No. 3, Florida is No. 6, Georgia is No. 7 and Texas A&M is No. 9. South Carolina checks in at No. 14.

HIGHEST RANKED COMPETITORS IN SEC

¢ Veterans Nijgia Snapp and Kianna Ruff rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women’s 800m in the SEC. Snapp and Ruff both put forth their best times of the season on the Randal Tyson oval, coming in at 2:07.08 and 2:07.48, respectively. ¢ Newcomer Hannah Davidson, a graduate student transfer, ranks fourth in the women’s 5,000m with a mark of 16:22.74, which she set at the UW Husky Classic.

That mark ranks fifth all-time in the UT indoor records. ¢ UT’s top women’s DMR time of the season (11:24.34) ranks fourth in the SEC. ¢ Junior pole vaulter Linda Hadfield’s school record mark of 13-5.75 also ranks fourth in the league this season, while her teammate Erin Champion (12-11.75) ranks seventh in the event. ¢ Freshman thrower Cassie Wertman (51-10.5) ranks sixth in the shot put for the Lady Vols. ¢ Rookie Jake Blankenship (18-1) and junior Chase Brannon (17-8.5) rank second and fifth, respectively, in the men’s pole vault. ¢ Sophomore Peter Okwera (8:18.48) ranks third in the league in the 5,000m, while his teammate Austin Whitelaw sits fourth in the event with a time of 8:20.45. ¢ The top Vol DMR time of the season (9:56.75) ranks second in the SEC. ¢ Throwers Matthew Hoty (60-3.25) and Tavis Bailey (60-0.25) ranks sixth and eighth, respectively, in the SEC shot put competition entering the meet. ¢ Vol thrower Cameron Brown’s freshman record (62-1.25) in the weight throw ranks seventh in the SEC.

VOL VAULTERS

¢ UT has claimed the men’s pole vault crown in five of the past seven seasons (did not win in 2010 and 2012). ¢ The Vols will send four vaulters into competition this weekend as junior Chase Brannon looks to improve on last season’s third-place finish. ¢ Jake Blankenship, who broke Lawrence Johnson’s freshman record this season (18-1), ranks second in the SEC and seventh in the nation. Among freshmen, he tops the league rankings and sits second nationally. ¢ Tyler Porter and Michael Maira will also compete in the event.

LADY VOL DMR STREAK

¢ Tennessee has won six-consecutive SEC titles and eight of the past nine crowns in the women’s distance medley relay (2004-05, 2007-12). ¢ The UT women went on to win NCAA Championships in the DMR in 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2010, including an indoor world-record time of 10:50.98 in 2009. ¢ J.J. Clark has directed all of those winning unites, and UT had not won the event prior to his hiring in 2002-03. ¢ The Lady Vols have improved the SEC meet record three times during their DMR spree. They ran 11:16.61 in 2004, 11:14.59 in 2010 and the current record of 11:05.37 in 2011.

THE CLARK EFFECT

¢ Clark piloted the Lady Vols to NCAA Indoor titles in 2005 and 2009 and SEC Indoor wins in 2005, 2007 and 2009. ¢ Three-time SEC Indoor Track & Field Women’s Coach of the Year (2005, 2007, 2009). ¢ Dating back to 2004, Clark has led the Lady Vols to eight championships in the DMR, five 800m champions, three mile champions, six 3,000m champs and three 5K winners at the SEC indoor meet. ¢ In 10 full seasons leading the Lady Vols and three with the Vols, Clark’s athletes have won 60 SEC titles (Women 31 in/27 Out; Men: 1 in/1 Out).
