FIRST SERVE ON THE ROAD

¢ After posting a 2-1 record at its annual home tournament, the Comcast Lady Vol Classic, last weekend, the University of Tennessee volleyball team will hit the road for the first time of the 2012 season. ¢ In 2011, the Big Orange finished with a 14-3 record in matches away from Thompson-Boling Arena, including a 3-1 mark in a neutral location. ¢ This weekend, the Orange & White takes on unbeaten and 24th-ranked Colorado State (3-0), BYU (3-0) and tournament host Wichita State (2-1) at the annual Shocker Volleyball Classic.

A LOOK AT THE TOURNAMENT FIELD ¢ The Lady Vols will be matching up against Colorado State, BYU and tournament host Wichita State at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. Take a look at how Tennessee has fared against the three opponents in the past: ¢ Colorado State Series Record: CSU leads, 2-1 Last Meeting: Rams won, 3-1 (26-24, 28-26, 23-25, 25-13) on Sept. 12, 2009 in the University of North Carolina Classic. Notes: UT won the opening matchup, 3-2, in 1983, but has lost the most recent two. The only other meeting was on Sept. 8, 1990 and Colorado State won in straight sets.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

¢ After falling to then-No. 12 Florida State on Friday in the home opener, the Lady Vols rebounded Saturday to defeat Cincinnati in four sets and upset then-No. 10 Iowa State in a thrilling five-setter to finish second at the event. ¢ Junior outside hitter Kelsey Robinson led the tournament in total kills (55), kills per set average (4.58) and aces per frame (0.42) and recorded backto-back double-doubles on Saturday. ¢ Junior Ellen Mullins finshed the event with a team-high 42 digs, while sophomore setter Mary Pollmiller dished out 107 assists and recorded a double-double against Iowa State. ¢ Redshirt senior DeeDee Harrison led the defensive effort at the net with 14 total blocks, while Leslie Cikra and Mercedes Vaughn each added 11 rejections. Cikra also finished second on the team with 33 kills.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

¢ For their efforts, Robinson and Mullins both landed on the Comcast Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament Team. ¢ Robinson’s tournament highlight came in the final match of the six-match event, as she tallied a careerhigh 29 kills and tied a career-best with five service aces, including two straight to end the match. She also added 14 digs in the match, marking her 29thcareer double-double. ¢ Mullins’ weekend was also highlighted by Saturday’s nightcap, as she paced the match with 19 digs, including six in the crucial fourth set. She also scooped 14 digs in the Lady Vols’ 3-1 win over Cincinnati on Saturday morning.

MEDIA CREDENTIALS

Requests for working media credentials should be directed to volleyball contact Brian Bruce. Those wishing to attend a match are asked to call the Media Relations Office to be placed on the pass list. Photo credentials will be issued only to accredited photographers or those individuals on special assignment. Because there are specifically designated areas for photographers, we ask that anyone shooting a Lady Vol volleyball match at Thompson-Boling Arena check with Brian prior to the start of the contest.

RADIO

Thompson-Boling Arena is available for radio broadcasts through UT Telephone Services. In order to access these lines, those interested in broadcasting a particular match need to inform the UT Athletics Media Relations Office in writing at their earliest convenience and no later than three weeks prior to the contest. Radio stations also will need to contact UT Telephone Services at (865) 974-3121 to order a telephone line for use at the contest(s).

STATISTICAL SERVICES

Services provided include statistics generated from the StatCrew computer program. Match statistics will be handed to all attending members of the media and sports information personnel after every game. Following the conclusion of the match, final statistics will be faxed/emailed to the visiting sports information director’s fax/ email list. Results will also be emailed to the sports information contact of visiting teams at the conclusion of the match in lieu of a sports information representative traveling with his or her team. Arrangements should be made in advance for any additional services.

INTERVIEWS

Interviews will be available following the match after a 10-minute cooling-off period. Media wishing to interview the coaches or any players other than on game days are required to set up interviews with 24 hours notice through Brian Bruce in the UT Media Relations Office.

» Career number of kills for junior outside hitter Kelsey Robinson entering this weekend’s tournament

SEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

¢ Defending SEC Player of the Year Kelsey Robinson was named the season’s first SEC Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 27 for her performance at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. ¢ Robinson, who was named to the all-tournament team, earned her sixth career weekly honor after leading the league last season with five player of the week awards. ¢ She finished the tournament with 55 kills, 34 digs, 10 assists and five aces in 12 sets.

LADY VOLS IN THE SEC

¢ Following the opening weekend of play, the Lady Vols rank in the top five in the SEC in three major categories. UT is third in blocks per set (2.5), fourth in kills per frame (13.83) and fifth in hitting percentage (.244). Tennessee also ranks sixth in assists per game (12.75). ¢ Individually, Robinson ranks second in kills (4.58) and points (5.17), ninth in aces (0.42) and 20th in digs (2.83). ¢ Harrison is sixth in blocks (1.17), Pollmiller is eighth in assists (8.92), Vaughn is 10th in blocks (1.10), Arellano is 14th in aces (0.33), Cikra is 17th in blocks (0.92) and Mullins is 17th in digs (3.50).

WHO’S BACK? ¢ Tennessee is returning all six starters and its starting libero in 2012: seniors Leslie Cikra and DeeDee Harrison, junior Kelsey Robinson and sophomores Mary Pollmiller, Tiffany Baker and Shealyn Kolosky. Junior Ellen Mullins is the returning starting libero for the Orange & White. In addition, the Lady Vols also welcome back redshirt senior Kayla Jeter, who spent the 2011 campaign sidelined with a knee injury. ¢ Robinson set the tone for the Big Orange last season, earning AVCA Second Team All-American honors. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter became the first UT player to be named SEC Player of the Year after leading the league in kills (4.52/set), points (5.15/set) and double-doubles (23), while rating second in service aces (.35/set). She was also named a Volleyball Magazine All-American and earned AVCA All-South Region honors. ¢ Harrison, Baker and Cikra all earned AVCA AllAmerican Honorable Mention honors last season after helping guide UT to its first outright SEC title. Harrison, a First Team All-SEC member and AVCA AllSouth Region honoree, led the conference in blocks (1.14/set). Baker was tabbed to the All-SEC Second Team and the SEC All-Freshman Team after averaging 2.48 kills/set. The 6-foot-4 outside hitter earned College Volleyball Update National Player of the Week honors on Nov. 1. Cikra was named First Team All-SEC and earned AVCA All-American Honorable Mention accolades after hitting a scorching .330 in league

Cikra was also named to the AVCA’s All-South Region squad. ¢ Pollmiller - the team’s 5-foot-10 setter - returns for her sophomore season after a record breaking freshman campaign. After leading the nation’s freshmen with 11.94 assists per set, she was named the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year, the AVCA’s All-South Region Freshman of the Year, an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, to the AVCA All-South Region Team and to the All-SEC Second Team. Pollmiller rewrote the Tennessee record books, setting single-season marks in total assists (1,480) and assists per set (11.94) during the 25-point rally scoring era. She was just the second Lady Vol to be named the league’s rookie of the year (Nikki Fowler, 2007). ¢ After tearing her ACL in last season’s preseason practice, Jeter returns to the squad in 2012. The 5-foot-11 outside hitter earned 2011 Preseason All-SEC Team honors before being sidelined. In 2010, Jeter was named an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, to the AVCA All-South Region Team and First Team All-SEC. ¢ Also returning for UT is senior Jasmine Brown, sophomores Stephanie Stoll and Nikki Brice, and redshirt freshman Mercedes Vaughn.

¢ For the third consecutive season, the Tennessee volleyball team opened its campaign in the national rankings, as it came in at No. 15 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll, which was released on Aug. 13. ¢ The preseason ranking is the ninth in program history for the Lady Vols, who concluded 2011 rated as the 19th-best team in the nation. ¢ On Aug. 27, the Lady Vols moved up one position to No. 14 in the nation following wins over Cincinnati and then-No. 10 Iowa State. ¢ Dating back to last season, Tennessee has now spent 12 consecutive polling periods in the AVCA’s national rankings ¢ After entering the ranking at No. 24 on Nov. 30, 2009, the Lady Vols spent 19 consecutive polling period in the Top 25, until falling out for a four-week span last season.

WHO’S NEW? ¢ After adding assistant coaches Alan Edwards and Rachel Cooper and director of operations Jenna Dover prior to last season, there was only one addition to the Lady Vol Volleyball coaching staff in 2012. Russ Friedland joined the program this past summer and will serve as the team’s volunteer assistant coach. Friedland spent the last four years as a head coach at the Metro American Volleyball Club in Washington, D.C. He also has experience as an assistant coach at Howard University, George Washington University, American University and the University of Connecticut. ¢ On the court, the Lady Vols welcome six newcomers, including four freshmen. After winning a National Championship last season, Olivia Okoro joins the squad as a transfer in 2012. Whitney Heeres, who transferred from Ball State also joins the Orange & White. Heeres played in 31 matches last season and averaged 2.26 kills/set for the Cardinals. ¢ Freshmen setter Bianca Arellano - an AVCA Under Armour All-American, Volleyball Magazine/Rox Girls’ Fab 50 List and Arizona’s Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year - joins the Lady Vols. ¢ Rookie middle blocker and California native Alex Lynch joins the club after never losing a league match in high school with Bishop O’Dowd High. ¢ Local product Megan Hatcher - an all-state defensive specialist at Webb School of Knoxville - joins the team in 2012. ¢ Lastly, freshman outside hitter Ashlyn Sunseri is now a member of the Lady Vols after playing high school ball at Northridge in Tuscaloosa, Ala. She earned all-state honors her senior season. Her father, Sal, is the defensive coordinator of the Tennessee football team.

SCOUTING THE FIELD #24 COLORADO STATE

¢ The 24th-ranked Rams enter the second week of the season with a perfect 3-0 record after posting sweeps against Virginia, Denver and Rhode Island at their annual home tournament, the Rams Volleyball Rocky Mountain Invitational. ¢ Setter Deedra Foss recorded 90 total assists to take home the tournament MVP honors, while seniors Dana Cranston and Megan Plourde were also named to the all-tournament squad. ¢ Colorado State has been picked to win its fourthstraight Mountain West Conference title. ¢ The Rams have made an impressive 17-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. ¢ CSU went a perfect 6-0 in neutral site matches in 2011 and have actually won 15-straight neutral matches. ¢ The Rams hit a combined .310 in its first three matches of 2012. ¢ Cranston was selected as the 2012 Mountain West Preaseaons Co-Player of the Year. ¢ Now in his 16th season at the helm of the Rams, Tom Hibert has a record of 388-96 at Colorado State. Entering the season, he ranked 19th among active coaches in wins with 559. Hibert has won 13 conference coach of the year awards and has 38 wins against top-25 teams.

¢ BYU finished last season 21-9 overall and 10-6 in league play in its inaugural year in the WCC. ¢ The Cougars finished third in the league and narrowly missed an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. ¢ The Cougars return five starters in 2012 and nine total letterwinners. ¢ Shawn Olmstead is in his second season as head coach at BYU. His team received three-all-conference honorees, one all-region and one All-American honor in its first season in the WCC.

UT VOLLEYBALL HONORS ¢ After capturing its first outright SEC title last season, the Tennessee volleyball team has been unanimously selected to repeat as league champions in a preseason vote by the league’s 13 coaches. ¢ Tournament host Wichita State opens its home slate after posting a 2-1 record on opening weekend. The Shockers lost to New Mexico State and defeated Northern Illinois and North Dakota State at the NIU Invitational. ¢ The Shocks are 21-14-1 in home openers and 10-2 in home openers under head coach Chris Lamb. Wichita State has won seven straight home openers. ¢ Senior libero Jackie Church was named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week this week for her performance at the tournament. She averaged 4.83 digs, 0.33 aces, 1.25 assists and 0.17 kills per set at the tournament. She notched a match-high 15 digs against New Mexico State and posted a careerhigh 31 scoops against Northern Illinois. ¢ Church and junior middle block Elizabeth Field were named to the all-tournament team. Field averaged 2.67 kills per set while hitting .419 at the event. ¢ The Shockers were receiving votes in the AVCA Preseason Poll, but fell out of the rankings this week. ¢ Senior outside hitter Emily Adney and junior Ashley Andrade were both named to the Preseason AllValley Team. The Shocks return four starters from a team that went 21-12 last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-consecutive season. ¢ Head Coach Chris Lamb returns for his 13th season. ¢ The BYU Cougars started the 2012 season with a perfect 3-0 record after posing shutout wins over Arkansas State, Air Force and Rice at the Rice Invitational. ¢ Junior hitter Jennifer Hamson was named Rice Invitational MVP, while Heather Hannemann and Alex Gray were tabbed to the all-tournament team. Hamson also earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for her performance at the tournament.
