Big Orange Slices... So Close to Entering the Rankings! The Tennessee Lady Vol soccer program finds itself sitting just outside of a pair of the latest Top 25 polls following its successful opening weekend with victories at Kansas and Oklahoma. In the most recent release of the SoccerTimes.com ranking, UT received 22 total points to sit 27th, while in the NSCAA/Continental Tire poll, the Big Orange received eight points to rate in a tie for 35th. Long a stalwart in the national rankings, Tennessee’s last listing in any Top 25 occurred back on Aug. 24, 2009, at #23 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll. Call Her “Caroline Clutch” Tennessee sophomore Caroline Brown wasted little time in demonstrating her offensive prowess to open her second season in the Orange & White. The Hershey, Pa., native tallied three goals, including posting the first two-goal match of her career (vs. Oklahoma), with two of those being clutch match-winners as the Lady Vols toppled Kansas (2-1, OT) and Oklahoma (3-1). The 5-9 forward now owns six career scores while amazingly, FOUR OF THOSE GOALS ARE OF THE MATCH-WINNING VARIETY. For her efforts during the road wins at KU and OU, Brown received nods as both the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week (8/22) and as one of CollegeSoccer360.com’s Primetime Performers of the Week. Early Success on the Road Has Often Been Elusive By defeating Kansas and Oklahoma on the road over Aug. 19 & 21, the occurrence marked the first time that Tennessee soccer emerged victorious from its first two pure road matches of the season since back during the 2001 season when UT toppled #13 BYU and James Madison in Provo, Utah, and Harrisonburg, Va., respectively. Perhaps every more stunning is the fact that the back-to-back victories at KU and OU were the first time in program history that Tennessee won its first two matches of the season away from Knoxville (including neutral site contests). The closest the Big Orange had come previously was a 1-0-1 record back in 2009 against #19 Minnesota (0-0, 2OT) and Wisconsin (1-0) in Minneapolis, Minn. Once again the rugged scheduling of UT Coach Angela Kelly has often played a role in an early-season defeat. Loads of Success for Tennessee in Home Openers The Big Orange maintains a 13-2 all-time record in home openers, having won its last two Knoxville lidlifters dating back to a 1-0 defeat to #13 West Virginia on Sept. 5, 2008, during the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic. Under the guidance of Angela Kelly, UT is 9-2 in home openers with victories over foes including #6 Virginia (2006), #7 Penn State (2007), #15 Duke (2004) and #16 Wake Forest (2001). First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic History Tennessee will play host to the 12th Tennessee Lady Vol Classic this weekend (Aug. 26 & 28) at the Regal Soccer Stadium as #15/8 UCLA, #8/7 Florida and #18/NR Texas A&M venture to Knoxville. The Lady Vols will open their participation at the event on Friday at 8 p.m. ET versus the nationally-ranked Bruins before wrapping things up at 11:30 a.m. Sunday versus the #18 Aggies. Last year, the Big Orange posted an 1-1 record during its home-hosted event, dropping a 3-1 decision to #14 Maryland before bouncing back to post a come-from-behind, 2-1 win over Richmond. #14 Maryland won the tournament with a 2-0 record, UT finished second at 1-1 while both Richmond and Kennesaw State tied with 0-1-1 records. Among the top returnees for UCLA are senior F Sydney Leroux (13 G, 1 A in 2010), sophomore MF Jenna Richmond (5 G, 4 A) and redshirt senior GK Chante Sandiford (0.85 GAA, 63 saves, eight ShO). Freshman F/M Allie Bailey already owns two scores for the Aggies who enter the weekend at 1-1 with a 4-2 win over Fresno State and a 1-0 loss to #17 UC Irvine.
