FIRST SERVE Sunday afternoon’s match against the Gamecocks marks the 61st meeting between the two programs. South Carolina is currently the Lady Vols third-most played opponent behind SEC rivals Kentucky (71) and Georgia (66). Tennessee currently leads the all-time series by a 35-25 margin and has won nine straight entering the tilt. UT has claimed four of the nine consecutive victories in straight sets, while needing five sets just once. The Big Orange’s last loss to the Gamecocks came at South Carolina on Oct. 10, 2008. This weekend marks the 29th meeting in Knoxville, with UT currently holding a 19-9 advantage at home. The Lady Vols last loss at home to South Carolina came more than 10 years ago on Nov. 8, 2002. UT lost 3-1 to the then-No. 18 Gamecocks in that matchup. After losing his first eight meetings, head coach Rob Patrick now holds a career record of 18-15 against South Carolina.

The Gamecocks enter their third season under head coach Scott Swanson. Last year’s squad went 18-14, the program’s second winning season in the last decade and the most wins since 2008 (21). The Gamecocks return five letterwinners from a year ago, including two starters in senior Juliette Thevenin and sophomore Darian Dozier. Leading South Carolina is Thevenin, who leads the SEC in kills per set (4.98) and points per set (5.30). She is the defending SEC Player of the Week after averaging 6.00 points per set last weekend. With the departure of 11 letterwinners, the Gamecocks lost 97 percent of its production from last season in assists (1,346), 78.1 percent in digs (1,252) and 58.9 percent in kills (876).
MILESTONE FOR PATRICK In the closing match of the Tennessee Invitational, head coach Rob Patrick earned his 350th career win as the Lady Vols defeated Coastal Carolina, 3-1.
