 This weekend’s series marks the first matchup between Tennessee and Arkansas since 2009. Knoxville L, 8-15  With 553 career defensive assists, Osborne has already shat- 4/26/09 tered the school record previously set by fellow Louisville native and bearer of the number two UT jersey Chris Burke (524). He is currently third in school history with 213 games played.  Osborne is currently second among all regular SEC shortstops with a .980 fielding percentage and five errors, behind only Florida’s Nolan Fontana (.986, three errors).

MEDIA INFORMATION



Media Credentials

Media credentials will be issued to members of the working media only. Children and other non-workers will not be allowed. Requests for credentials should be made by calling Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron Harris at least one day in advance of each home game or series. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations Office will be left at the ticket will call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Postgame Interviews

Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is available to meet any working member of the media following the game on the field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Media are asked to conduct player interviews on the field, and media members are not permitted in the clubhouse area.

Interviews with visiting team members also may be done on the field, subject to the policy of the visiting team’s media relations representative.

Photographers

Media credentials are required for all photographers and television media. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations office will be left at the ticket will-call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Photo decks are located atop the stairwells behind the first- and third-baselines. There are also photo field-level photo wells at the far end of each dugout. Both still and television photographers are welcome to shoot from these spots. Television crews are welcome to film from the mezzanine level underneath the press box.

Photographers will not be permitted in or between the dugouts.

The Press Box

The Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box is for working members of the media only. The press box is located atop the grandstand behind home plate and includes space for working members of the press, official and visiting scorers, public address announcer and scoreboard operator.

Also located on the press level are two radio booths and a television/VIP booth. Admission to the press box is by credential only.

Press Box Services

Updated cumulative statistics, game notes and scorecards, along with team rosters, will be available in the press box at each home game. A final box score will be compiled and distributed at the completion of each game.

An official scorer is assigned to all home games, and Cameron Harris will keep the media informed of all scoring decisions, notable facts and records.

Internet

High-speed wireless Internet is available in the Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box, including both radio booths and the television booth. There also are a limited number of DSL connections available for use by the media in the press box (but not in the radio booths), and phone lines for dial-up access are available as well. 

First Season at Tennessee Overall Record: 313-167-1 (.652) Cerritos College, 1985 Trinity College & University, 2003

Following a nationwide search, Dave Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program. A former UT assistant, he was welcomed back to the Big Orange family on June 15, 2011.

A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 11 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano arrives at Rocky Top with a career record of 289-139-1 (.675) in seven seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year at the helm of the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four campaigns with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009.

Serrano, 46, returns to the site of his first Division I job, as he served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer, as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97-36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995.

Serrano recently finished his fourth season as the head coach at Cal State Fullerton, where he earned Big West Coach of the Year honors for the second season in a row after leading the Titans to their 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. He previously claimed Baseball America National Coach of the Year accolades after guiding UC Irvine to the first College World Series appearance in program history in 2007.

During his 17 seasons at the Division I level, Serrano has posted an impeccable track record that includes continuous top 25 recruiting classes and 16 postseason bids. He has also tutored 161 draft picks, including seven first-round selections, dating back to the start of his coaching career at Cerritos College in 1988, a total of 23 of which have reached the Major League level.

Serrano graduated from Cerritos High School in 1982 and played two seasons at Cerritos College. In 1985, he went 12-1 and earned junior college All-American honors while helping the Falcons to a 39-5 record en route to the state championship. Serrano then pitched for Augie Garrido’s 1986 Cal State Fullerton squad, posting a 3-4 record with one save in 15 appearances.

In 2010, Serrano represented his country for the first time in his career, serving as the pitching coach for Bill Kinneberg’s USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He helped coach the team, which included Titan pupils Nick Ramirez and Noe Ramirez, to a V FISU Championship silver medal in Tokyo, Japan. Serrano has coached 19 players that have starred for USA Baseball National Teams, including Helton, Dickey and Augie Ojeda from Tennessee.

Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003) and was born on June 28, 1964, in Torrence, Calif. He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zachary and Parker.



I look forward to him getting the Tennessee program back on the winning track.”

Notes on the Vols...

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE

 With wins over Texas, South Carolina, Florida and Vanderbilt, Tennessee has at least one victory over exactly half of last year’s College World Series field, including the two finalists.  The Vols have defeated a total of five ranked teams this season, downing No. 16 Texas, No. 2 Kentucky, No. 19 Georgia, No. 10 South Carolina and No. 4 Florida.  The common denominator in three of those contests against ranked teams was UT starting pitcher Zack Godley who started against the Longhorns, Wildcats and Gamecocks, posting a 2-0 record, a 2.61 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 20.2 IP in those games.

IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME...

 It hasn’t taken long for fans in Knoxville to buy in to Coach Serrano and the Vols. Tennessee has already had 12 home crowds of 2,000+, which is twice as many as it had all of last season.  UT’s average attendance of 1,914 through the first 30 home games this season ranks second alltime behind only the 1997 campaign. The team’s total attendance of 57,434 marks just the seventh time it has passed the 50,000 mark. UT has surpassed 60,000 fans in a season just twice (1997 and 2007).  The UT-Florida series saw 9,516 fans click the turnstiles at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, making it the second-highest attended series in school history.

Only the 1994 series against the Gators has been better, as it had a total of 11,280 fans on hand.  Tennessee set a school record for the highest-attended home opener when 2,812 fans were on hand to witness the start of the Dave Serrano era on Feb. 17.  Tennessee Regular-Season Home Attendance

TWO VOLS ON WATCH LISTS

 Senior Zach Osborne and junior Drew Steckenrider have been named to the watch lists for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year and John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year awards, respectively.  The awards will be presented as part of the annual College Baseball Night of Champions on June 30 in Lubbock, Texas.

OSBORNE THE IRONMAN

 The only four-year starter on the UT roster, senior shortstop Zach Osborne is likely to play more games in the Orange and White than almost anyone in Tennessee history. him out of the lineup for two games late during the 2010 campaign. Since returning to the lineup on May 17, 2011 vs. Belmont, Osborne has started his last 56 games.

MR. WIZARD

 The only Vol to start every game this season, senior shortstop Zach Osborne has been a defensive wizard for Tennessee this season, having committed just five errors in the first 52 games for a fielding percentage of .980.  With a 4-6-3 double play at Mississippi State on April 19, Osborne broke the UT career mark for defensive assists previously set at 524 by fellow Louisville native and bearer of the number two Tennessee jersey Chris Burke. Osborne’s total currently stands at 553.  Osborne had a streak of 80 consecutive defensive chances without a miscue snapped on March 28 vs.

STARTERS TWIRLING GEMS

 Sophomore Nick Williams has fired a pair of gems in his last two outings, setting career highs with eight strikeouts and 8.2 innings pitched in UT’s 8-2 win over Vanderbilt before going six strong at Ole Miss (2 ER, 6 H).  Freshman Dalton Saberhagen added a solid effort as well, twirling Tennessee’s first complete game of the season in a 4-2 loss at No. 24 Ole Miss on May 11. It was UT’s first regulation complete game in an SEC contest since Stephen McCray went nine in a 4-1 win against Georgia in Athens on May 7, 2010.

20 IN A HURRY

 The Vols needed just 30 games to reach 20 wins this season, their fastest path to that mark since going 20-8 to open the 2005 campaign, which resulted in a trip to the College World Series.

TAKING THEIR DOSES

 With Tennessee batters having been hit by a pitch 88 times this season, tying for the second-highest total in school history. The Vols currently lead the SEC and rank sixth in the NCAA in hit by pitch. LAYIN' IT DOWN

 For someone who has no recollection of ever laying down a sac bunt until his freshman year of college, Chris Fritts sure has figured it out. The junior outfielder currently leads the SEC with 11 sac bunts.  As a team, Tennessee ranks second in the SEC with 51 sac bunts. Auburn is first with 57.

AND GUNNING 'EM DOWN

 Fritts has also been an asset defensively for the Vols. The team’s starting centerfielder this season, his third at Rocky Top, he has recorded 14 outfield assists, more than any other player at UT since the statistic was first kept in 2000. Former teammates Josh Liles and Charley Thurber are second on that list with 12 each.

WHATEVER IT TAKES...

 Tennessee will take runs any way it can get them.  Tennessee has had nine innings in which it has scored at least one run without the benefit of even a single hit this season, totaling 14 runs in those frames. The Vols accomplished the feat twice in one game against Mississippi Valley State on March 27, scoring three runs in those two frames.

WHEREVER I WIND UP

 Former Vol and current New York Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey’s memoir, entitled “Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball,” officially went on sale Thursday, March 29. In it, he details a difficult childhood and describes his long journey in Major League Baseball.  Dickey became the 18th person inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Hall of Fame at the program’s annual preseason banquet, held this year on Jan. 18.

HAVE A MONTH BUDDY

 After going just 1-for-13 in the month of February, senior Davis Morgan found another gear in March, hitting .390 (23-for-59) with three doubles, a home run and 11 RBIs over 18 games.  Morgan hit safely in 14 of those 18 games, recording six multi-hit contests. He also hit .393 (11for-28) with runners on base, including a .400 mark (6-for-15) with runners in scoring position and was 11-for-21 (.524) with two outs.

300 AND COUNTING...

 Tennessee skipper Dave Serrano picked up his 300th career win and first SEC victory ion the same day as the Vols shut out No. 19 Georgia, 3-0, in Athens on March 18. Serrano’s lifetime record now stands at 311-161-1 (.659) in eight seasons as a Division I head coach.

SERRANO ALREADY MAKING HISTORY

 Head Coach Dave Serrano helped lead the Vols to the second-best start in school history, as they tallied seven straight wins to open the 2012 campaign.  The 7-0 start also marked the best by any UT skipper to start his Tennessee managerial career, topping the previous mark of 4-0 set by William H. Newman in 1902 and tied by Z.G. GODLEY DOWNS CATS, EARNS PITCHER OF THE WEEK HONORS

 After tossing eight strong innings to lead Tennessee to a 4-1 victory over No. 2 Kentucky on Fri-

day, March 23, snapping the Wildcats’ 22-game winning streak and handing them their first loss of the season, junior right-hander Zack Godley was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week, CB360 Primetime Performer of the Week and the College Baseball Insider Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week.  Godley became just the 14th Volunteer pitcher to earn the SEC honors, joining the likes of R.A. Dickey, Todd Helton and Luke Hochevar, and just the third to do so since the 2007 campaign with the last player being Bryan Morgado in 2010.  In the win over Kentucky, Godley held the tophitting team in the SEC to just one run on three hits and struck out four over a career-high tying 8.0 innings. After yielding a first-inning run, he retired 21 of the final 25 batters that he faced and didn’t allow anyone past first base over the next seven frames.

VOLS RETURN TO HOUSTON COLLEGE CLASSIC

 Tennessee made its third appearance in the Houston College Classic when it made the trek to the Lone Star State, March 2-4. The Vols dropped a 7-4 decision to Houston on the first day before bouncing back with an impressive, 5-4, triumph over No. 16 Texas on Saturday. UT then fell to Rice, 11-1, in the final game of the weekend. Senior shortstop Zach Osborne was named to the all-tournament team. The event was held at the home of the Houston Astros, Minute Maid Park. The Vols previously participated in the event in both 2005 and 2008.

VOLS HOOK HORNS DEEP IN HEART OF TEXAS

 Led by a career-high seven strong innings on the mound from Zack Godley, Tennessee defeated No. 16 Texas, 5-4, at Minute Maid Park in the Houston College Classic on March 3.  The win marked UT’s first over a ranked squad since it swept a doubleheader from then No. 15 Vanderbilt in Knoxville on April 10, 2010.

PUPIL TAKES DOWN THE TEACHER

 When the Vols defeated No. 16 Texas, 5-4, at the Houston College Classic on March 3, it marked Dave

Serrano’s third career victory, first at Tennessee, over his former head coach Augie Garrido. Serrano made 15 appearances as part of Garrido’s pitching staff at Cal State Fullerton in 1986.  En route to the program’s first College World Series berth, Serrano’s UC-Irvine squad also defeated Texas twice in the Round Rock Regional in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

ROOF OVER UT’S HEAD

 In the 103-year history of the Tennessee baseball program, the Vols have played 22 games in domes or stadiums with retractable roofs, posting a 12-10 record in those contests.  UT is 4-3 in the Kingdome, playing in the College Baseball Classic in Seattle, Wash., in 1992 and 1994.  The Vols played in the Hormel Foods Classic in the Metrodome in 1996 and 2002, going 5-1 in games played in the Minneapolis, Minn., venue.  Including its three games this season, Tennessee is 3-6 at Minute Maid Park with a pair of wins over Texas and and another over Oklahoma State.

IT’S A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT

 The Vols took that saying a little too literally on Tuesday, Feb. 21, when they played a 13-inning, four hour, 48-minute contest, the longest in school history, against Western Kentucky.  In that game, UT was down to its last strike on two occasions, rallying from a run down in both the ninth and 11th innings.  The game broke the previous school record of four hours, 30 minutes set against Morehead State on Feb. 26, 1989.  The 13-inning game was the longest (by innings) for the Vols since it played 13 against Arkansas on May 26, 2004, in the SEC Tournament.

 Junior Drew Steckenrider got the season off to a scalding start, earning the first SEC Player of the Week honor of the season.  Hitting out of the cleanup spot, the 6-5 switchhitting junior reached base 11 times in 14 plate appearances, going 5-for-8 (.625) with a pair of doubles

and his second career home run. He also served as the team’s Opening Day starter, picking up the win after allowing just two hits and no runs and striking out two in his pre-determined four innings of work.

VOLS UNVEIL NEW UNIS

 Tennessee unveiled a new set of uniforms designed to create more of a traditional look for the Vols when they hit the field this season.

“It brings back a little bit of history to UT baseball and I think it gives us a sharp look,” Serrano said.

In addition to the team’s black batting practice top, Tennessee will also have separate orange and white tops with black piping and script Vols across the chest, as well as a traditional gray road uniform.

The Big Orange will have their choice of plain white or pinstripe pants and will wear a black hat with an orange bill and an orange power T.

ALL THE NEW FACES

 In addition to an entirely new coaching staff, the Vols have also welcomed a grand total of 18 newcomers to the squad as well. The revamped UT roster actually features more new players than returning (16).  The group of first-year Vols is comprised of 13 true freshmen, four junior college players and one transfer from a four-year school. There are four outfielders, five infielders, one catcher and eight pitchers, including six right-handers and two southpaws.

GOOD BLOODLINES

 Tennessee junior Zach Luther, a transfer infielder from Fullerton Junior College, is the son of former NFL quarterback Ed Luther. He played six seasons in the NFL, mostly withthe San Diego Chargers, and amassed nearly 3,200 career passing yards before spending the 1985 season as a quarterback for the USFL’s Jacksonville Bulls.  Vol freshman right-handed pitcher Eric Martin is the son of former Tennessee swimmer Kent Martin, who was a five-time SEC champion and was a member of the 1978 national champion swim team.

 Tennessee freshman second baseman Will Maddox will look to follow the example set this fall by a fellow first-year Vol and Gainesville High School graduate, A.J. Johnson. Maddox’s former prep classmate was named a freshman All-American by five different publications, including the Football Writers Association of America, Yahoo! Sports, Phil Steele, The Sporting News and FoxSports, after racking up 80 tackles for the Vol football team as its starting weakside linebacker.

2012 - SOPHOMORE

• Set to make his 12th start of the season on Saturday against Arkansa and is coming off his two best efforts of the season.

• He led the Vols to an 8-2 win over Vanderbilt with a career-high eight strikeouts in a career-long 8.2 innings two weeks ago before tossing 6.0 frames of two-run ball last week at Ole Miss.

• Lasted just 2.2 innings in his Friday night at Auburn, allowing five runs on a careerhigh tying six hits. Came back with four strong frames in the Sunday contest though, striking out five in 4.0 innings of two-run ball.

• First start saw him go 6.0 shutout innings, tying his career high with five strikeouts at No. 19 Georgia on March 18.

• Second came the No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats. He struck out three in 4.1 IP, with his brother, Michael, recording the only hit against him. Nick got him to foul out in the second matchup between the brothers.

• Allowed three runs on four hits in 3.2 IP against Alabama in his third start (4/1) • Suffered his third loss of the year at #10 South Carolina on April 8 despite not allowing an earned run.

• Struggled against No. 4 Florida, yielding five runs on four hits in just 1.1 IP (4/15) • Came back strong just two days later, striking out four in 3.0 IP vs. ETSU (4/17) • Currently stands in a tie for eighth in Tennessee history with seven career saves, including three this season.

• Picked up first save of the year vs. Northern Illinois, needing just 19 pitches to get through 2.2 perfect frames.

• First two losses came after fter yielding 10th inning RBI singles.

• Second save came against #16 Texas as he came on to record the final six outs at Minute Maid Park.

• Struck out 30 batters in 33.1 innings and helped close out three of the team’s four shutouts on the year.

• Recorded saves against Milwaukee (2/19), at Alabama (4/16), MTSU (5/10) and Auburn (5/19).

• First two career wins came against Ole Miss (3/26) and in the regular-season finale against Auburn (5/21), while his lone loss was at the hands of Indiana (3/5).

2012 - JUNIOR

• Returns to the Tennessee rotation after missing nearly a month with an oblique strain suffered on April 25.

• After leading UT with 28 relief appearances last year, Godley has made a seamless transition to the top spot in the Tennessee rotation.

• Godley’s has started five games this season against ranked teams. The Vols are 3-2 in those efforts with wins over No. 16 Texas, No. 2 Kentucky and No. 10 South Carolina.

• Made his first start in a Tennessee uniform in the first game of a doubleheader against Northern Illinois on the opening weekend of play.

• Claimed his second career victory in that game after needing just 40 pitches (29 strikes) to cruise through four innings of three-hit ball, striking out three as well.

• Struck out seven in 6.0 IP against Seton Hall (3 H, 1 R) on Feb. 25.

• Led the Vols to a victory over No. 16 Texas, needing just 68 pitches (47 strikes) to get through a career-high 7.0 IP in the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

• Was masterful against ULM on March 9, striking out a career-high 10 and yielding just three hits in eight shutout innings to improve to 3-0 on the year.

• Suffered his first setback of the season after getting touched for seven runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings of work, including five runs in one frame, at Georgia on March 17.

• Led the Vols to a 4-1 win over No. 2 Kentucky, handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season, with 8.0 strong innings on March 23. Earned SEC Pitcher of the Week, CB360 Primetime Performer and College Baseball Insider Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week honors for his performance.

• Twirled 5.2 strong frames at No. 10 South Carolina but did not factor into the decision after yielding two earned runs and striking out six.

• Struck out five in 7.1 innings at Mississippi State in the ESPNU Thursday Night SEC Game of the Week on April 19, but was saddled with a no-decision in a 2-1 UT loss.

• Returned from injury at MTSU on May 15, allowing a hit, a walk and retiring a batter on 15 pitches.

• Made a team-high 28 relief appearances, posting a 1-1 record, two saves and a 3.38 ERA while striking out 34 and walking just 13 in 32.0 innings on the mound.

• First Tennessee appearance came in the second game of the season as he struck out three in 2.0 frames against Milwaukee on Feb. 18.

• Recorded his first save against Canisius (2/27) with 1.2 innings of perfect relief to close out a 9-4 victory.

• Second save came just two appearances later when he struck out the final batter of the game in UT’s 10-8 triumph over Morehead State on March 6.

• Picked up his first win of the season against Middle Tennessee State on May 10 with two perfect innings of relief.
