Last Time Out...
Tennessee participated in the 2012 Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park this past weekend, going 1-2 with a victory over No. 16 Texas and losses to Houston and No. 4 Rice. The Vols opened the week with their first defeat of the season, falling in 10 innings to MTSU in Knoxville on Tuesday despite another ninth-inning miracle comeback to tie the game. In the Lone Star State three days later, the Vols tried to put together another late rally, scoring three runs and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth against Houston, but came up just once again, falling 7-4 to the Cougars. On Saturday, junior Zack Godley need just 68 pitches to get through career-high seven innings on the mound to lead the Orange and White to a 5-4 triumph over No. 16 Texas. The Vols then closed out their stay at the Houston College Classic with a tough, 11-1, loss on Sunday night to No. 4 Rice as the Owls turned the tides on UT, scoring four runs in the first two innings. Prior to that game, the Big Orange had outscored its opponents 21-2 in the first two innings of its first 10 games this year. Senior Zach Osborne was named the shortstop on the 2012 Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team.
Pupil Takes Down the Teacher
When the Vols defeated No. 16 Texas, 5-4, at the Houston College Classic on March 3, it marked Dave Serrano’s third career victory, first at Tennessee, over his former head coach Augie Garrido. Serrano made 15 appearances as part of Garrido’s pitching staff at Cal State Fullerton in 1986. En route to the program’s first College World Series berth, Serrano’s UC-Irvine squad also defeated Texas twice in the Round Rock Regional in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
