Tennessee will be making its third appearance at the Houston College Classic after participating in both 2005 and 2008. The Vols are 2-4 all-time at the event. The Vols will play Houston, Texas and Rice. The matchups with the Cougars and Owls will mark the first time the programs have met, while UT’s only showdown with the Longhorns occurred at the same event in 2008, a 6-5 Volunteer victory. The Teacher vs. The Pupil
When the Dave Serrano-led Vols take on Augie Garrido’s Texas Longhorns on Saturday, it will pit a coach against his former player as Serrano made 15 appearances as part of Garrido’s pitching staff at Cal State Fullerton in 1986. Saturday’s contest will mark the third matchup between Serrano and Garrido after two meetings in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. En route to the program’s first College World Series berth, Serrano’s UC-Irvine squad defeated Texas twice in the Round Rock Regional.
Roof Over UT’s Head
In the 103-year history of the Tennessee baseball program, the Vols have played 19 games in domes or stadiums with retractable roofs, posting an 11-8 record in those contests. UT is 4-3 in the Kingdome, playing in the College Baseball Classic in Seattle, Wash., in 1992 and 1994. The Vols played in the Hormel Foods Classic in the Metrodome in 1996 and 2002, going 5-1 in games played in the Minneapolis, Minn., venue. Entering this weekend, Tennessee is 2-4 at Minute Maid Park with wins over Texas and Oklahoma State.
