 Memphis leads the all-time series with Tennessee, 19-11.  Wednesday’s meeting will be the first between the two teams since 1995 when Dave Serrano was an assistant coach at UT, a 17-5 Volunteer victory.

Welcome Back to Rocky Top

 Three former Vols will be making the trip back to Rocky Top this Wednesday as part of the Memphis traveling party in Tigers assistant coaches Fred Corral and Clay Greene, as well as junior pitcher Clayton Gant.  As a freshman at UT, Gant made one appearance, allowing one run on one hit against Radford on March 3, 2009. After redshirting at Memphis in 2010, Gant went 4-3 with a 4.99 ERA in 14 starts for the Tigers in 2011 and is currently 0-2 with a 12.21 ERA in seven appearances this year.  Corral spent five total seasons with the Vols in two stints as UT’s pitching coach from 1993-95 and again from 2007-09.  A former Tennessee player, Greene helped the Vols to back-to-back NCAA Regionals in 1996 and 1997, finishing his career with a .318 average, eight home runs and 87 stolen bases, including a nation-leading 54 as a senior. He also spent three seasons as UT’s volunteer assistant coach from 2003-05.

 Tennessee was a perfect 5-0 against Mississippi Valley State and Alabama last week, as it improved to 18-10 overall and 5-4 in the SEC, marking the first time the Vols have been over .500 in league action since the beginning of the 2008 campaign.  UT’s sweep over Alabama was just the second in school history, dating back to the start of the rivalry in 1897. The only other time the Vols accomplished that feat was in 1994 in Tuscaloosa. Including two wins last season, Tennessee has now defeated the Crimson Tide a school record five consecutive times.  The Tennessee bullpen is working on a run of 16.2 consecutive scoreless innings, including 11.1 shutout innings in the sweep over Alabama. During the run, six pitchers have combined to allow 13 hits and strike out 15.

MEDIA INFORMATION



Media Credentials

Media credentials will be issued to members of the working media only. Children and other non-workers will not be allowed. Requests for credentials should be made by calling Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron Harris at least one day in advance of each home game or series. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations Office will be left at the ticket will call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Postgame Interviews

Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is available to meet any working member of the media following the game on the field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Media are asked to conduct player interviews on the field, and media members are not permitted in the clubhouse area.

Interviews with visiting team members also may be done on the field, subject to the policy of the visiting team’s media relations representative.

Photographers

Media credentials are required for all photographers and television media. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations office will be left at the ticket will-call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Photo decks are located atop the stairwells behind the first- and third-baselines. There are also photo field-level photo wells at the far end of each dugout. Both still and television photographers are welcome to shoot from these spots. Television crews are welcome to film from the mezzanine level underneath the press box.

Photographers will not be permitted in or between the dugouts.

The Press Box

The Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box is for working members of the media only. The press box is located atop the grandstand behind home plate and includes space for working members of the press, official and visiting scorers, public address announcer and scoreboard operator.

Also located on the press level are two radio booths and a television/VIP booth. Admission to the press box is by credential only.

Press Box Services

Updated cumulative statistics, game notes and scorecards, along with team rosters, will be available in the press box at each home game. A final box score will be compiled and distributed at the completion of each game.

An official scorer is assigned to all home games, and Cameron Harris will keep the media informed of all scoring decisions, notable facts and records.

Internet

High-speed wireless Internet is available in the Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box, including both radio booths and the television booth. There also are a limited number of DSL connections available for use by the media in the press box (but not in the radio booths), and phone lines for dial-up access are available as well. First Season at Tennessee Overall Record: 307-149-1 (.672) Cerritos College, 1985 Trinity College & University, 2003

Following a nationwide search, Dave Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program. A former UT assistant, he was welcomed back to the Big Orange family on June 15, 2011.

A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 11 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano arrives at Rocky Top with a career record of 289-139-1 (.675) in seven seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year at the helm of the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four campaigns with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009.

Serrano, 46, returns to the site of his first Division I job, as he served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer, as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97-36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995.

Serrano recently finished his fourth season as the head coach at Cal State Fullerton, where he earned Big West Coach of the Year honors for the second season in a row after leading the Titans to their 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. He previously claimed Baseball America National Coach of the Year accolades after guiding UC Irvine to the first College World Series appearance in program history in 2007.

During his 17 seasons at the Division I level, Serrano has posted an impeccable track record that includes continuous top 25 recruiting classes and 16 postseason bids. He has also tutored 161 draft picks, including seven first-round selections, dating back to the start of his coaching career at Cerritos College in 1988, a total of 23 of which have reached the Major League level.

Serrano graduated from Cerritos High School in 1982 and played two seasons at Cerritos College. In 1985, he went 12-1 and earned junior college All-American honors while helping the Falcons to a 39-5 record en route to the state championship. Serrano then pitched for Augie Garrido’s 1986 Cal State Fullerton squad, posting a 3-4 record with one save in 15 appearances.

In 2010, Serrano represented his country for the first time in his career, serving as the pitching coach for Bill Kinneberg’s USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He helped coach the team, which included Titan pupils Nick Ramirez and Noe Ramirez, to a V FISU Championship silver medal in Tokyo, Japan. Serrano has coached 19 players that have starred for USA Baseball National Teams, including Helton, Dickey and Augie Ojeda from Tennessee.

Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003) and was born on June 28, 1964, in Torrence, Calif. He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zachary and Parker.



Notes on the Vols...

Saving the Day

 After opening the year in the starting rotation, junior Nick Blount has found a new home in the UT bullpen, taking complete control of the closer role.  Blount switched roles with sophomore Nick Williams, who became a starter, on March 18. Since then, all he has done is record six saves in six save opportunities, including five in five consecutive games and two in one day.  Blount became the first pitcher in Tennessee history to record five saves in five games as he did so March 27-April 1, with two against MVSU and three versus Alabama. Layin' It Down

 For someone who has no recollection of ever laying down a sac bunt until his freshman year of college, Chris Fritts sure has figured it out. The junior outfielder currently leads the SEC with eight sacrifice bunts, two more than any other player.  As a team, Tennessee ranks in a tie with South Carolina for second in the SEC with 28 sac bunts.

Godley Downs Cats, Earns Pitcher of the Week Honors

 After tossing eight strong innings to lead Tennessee to a 4-1 victory over No. 2 Kentucky on Friday, March 23, snapping the Wildcats’ 22-game winning streak and handing them their first loss of the season, junior right-hander Zack Godley was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week, CB360 Primetime Performer of the Week and the College Baseball Insider Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week.  Godley became just the 14th Volunteer pitcher to earn the SEC honors, joining the likes of R.A. Dickey, Todd Helton and Luke Hochevar, and just the third to do so since the 2007 campaign with the last player being Bryan Morgado in 2010.  In the win over Kentucky, Godley held the tophitting team in the SEC to just one run on three hits and struck out four over a career-high tying 8.0 innings. After yielding a first-inning run, he retired 21 of the final 25 batters that he faced and didn’t allow anyone past first base over the next seven frames.

 Godley is now 4-1 on the year with a 3.89 ERA in a team-leading 44.0 innings, spanning seven starts.

 After going just 1-for-13 in the month of February, senior Davis Morgan found another gear in March, hitting .390 (23-for-59) with three doubles, a home run and 11 RBIs over 18 games.  Morgan hit safely in 14 of those 18 games, recording six multi-hit contests. He also hit .393 (11for-28) with runners on base, including a .400 mark (6-for-15) with runners in scoring position and was 11-for-21 (.524) with two outs.

Wherever I Wind Up

 Former Vol and current New York Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey’s memoir, entitled “Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball,” officially went on sale Thursday, March 29. In it, he details a difficult childhood and describes his long journey in Major League Baseball.  Dickey became the 18th person inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Hall of Fame at the program’s annual preseason banquet, held this year on Jan. 18.

 Tennessee has already had eight innings in which it has scored at least one run without the benefit of even a single hit this season, totaling 13 runs in those frames. The Vols accomplished the feat twice in one game against Mississippi Valley State on March 27, scoring three runs in those two frames.

Williams Gets the Nod

 The team’s closer for much of his short career, sophomore Nick Williams has grabbed hold of a role in the starting rotation. He opened his stint as a starter with 13.2 consecutive shutout innings, spanning his first two starts and part of his third. In those three starts, he has a 1.93 ERA with eight strikeouts and seven hits allowed.

300 and Counting...

 Tennessee skipper Dave Serrano picked up his 300th career win and first SEC victory in the Vols’ last contest as they shut out No. 19 Georgia, 3-0, in Athens. Serrano’s lifetime record now stands at 307-1491 (.672) in eight seasons as a Division I head coach.

Osborne the Ironman

 The only four-year starter on the UT roster, senior shortstop Zach Osborne is likely to play more games in the Orange and White than almost anyone in Tennessee history.  Osborne has been a defensive wizard for Tennessee this season, having committed just two errors in the first 28 games for a fielding percentage of .986.  Osborne had a streak of 80 consecutive defensive chances without a miscue snapped on Wednesday vs. Mississippi Valley State.

 Tennessee made its third appearance in the Houston College Classic when it made the trek to the Lone Star State, March 2-4. The Vols dropped a 7-4 decision to Houston on the first day before bouncing back with an impressive, 5-4, triumph over No. 16 Texas on Saturday. UT then fell to Rice, 11-1, in the final game of the weekend. Senior shortstop Zach Osborne was named to the all-tournament team. The event was held at the home of the Houston Astros, Minute Maid Park. The Vols previously participated in the event in both 2005 and 2008.

Vols Hook Horns Deep in Heart of Texas

 Led by a career-high seven strong innings on the mound from Zack Godley, Tennessee defeated No. 16 Texas, 5-4, at Minute Maid Park in the Houston College Classic on March 3.  The win marked UT’s first over a ranked squad since it swept a doubleheader from then No. 15 Vanderbilt in Knoxville on April 10, 2010.

Pupil Takes Down the Teacher

 When the Vols defeated No. 16 Texas, 5-4, at the Houston College Classic on March 3, it marked Dave Serrano’s third career victory, first at Tennessee, over his former head coach Augie Garrido. Serrano made 15 appearances as part of Garrido’s pitching staff at Cal State Fullerton in 1986.  En route to the program’s first College World Series berth, Serrano’s UC-Irvine squad also defeated Texas twice in the Round Rock Regional in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

Steckenrider Named SEC POTW

 Junior Drew Steckenrider got the season off to a scalding start, earning the first SEC Player of the Week honor of the season.  Hitting out of the cleanup spot, the 6-5 switchhitting junior reached base 11 times in 14 plate appearances, going 5-for-8 (.625) with a pair of doubles and his second career home run. He also served as the team’s Opening Day starter, picking up the win after allowing just two hits and no runs and striking out two in his pre-determined four innings of work.

 In the 103-year history of the Tennessee baseball program, the Vols have played 22 games in domes or stadiums with retractable roofs, posting a 12-10 record in those contests.  UT is 4-3 in the Kingdome, playing in the College Baseball Classic in Seattle, Wash., in 1992 and 1994.  The Vols played in the Hormel Foods Classic in the Metrodome in 1996 and 2002, going 5-1 in games played in the Minneapolis, Minn., venue.  Including its three games this season, Tennessee is 3-6 at Minute Maid Park with a pair of wins over Texas and and another over Oklahoma State.

 The Vols took that saying a little too literally on Tuesday, Feb. 21, when they played a 13-inning, four hour, 48-minute contest, the longest in school history, against Western Kentucky.  In that game, UT was down to its last strike on two occasions, rallying from a run down in both the ninth and 11th innings.  The game broke the previous school record of four hours, 30 minutes set against Morehead State on Feb. 26, 1989.  The 13-inning game was the longest (by innings) for the Vols since it played 13 against Arkansas on May 26, 2004, in the SEC Tournament.

 Tennessee unveiled a new set of uniforms designed to create more of a traditional look for the Vols when they hit the field this season.

“It brings back a little bit of history to UT baseball and I think it gives us a sharp look,” Serrano said.

In addition to the team’s black batting practice top, Tennessee will also have separate orange and white tops with black piping and script Vols across the chest, as well as a traditional gray road uniform.

The Big Orange will have their choice of plain white or pinstripe pants and will wear a black hat with an orange bill and an orange power T.

 In addition to an entirely new coaching staff, the Vols have also welcomed a grand total of 18 newcomers to the squad as well. The revamped UT roster actually features more new players than returning (16).  The group of first-year Vols is comprised of 13 true freshmen, four junior college players and one transfer from a four-year school. There are four outfielders, five infielders, one catcher and eight pitchers, including six right-handers and two southpaws.

Good Bloodlines

 Tennessee junior Zach Luther, a transfer infielder from Fullerton Junior College, is the son of former NFL quarterback Ed Luther. He played six seasons in the NFL, mostly withthe San Diego Chargers, and

amassed nearly 3,200 career passing yards before spending the 1985 season as a quarterback for the USFL’s Jacksonville Bulls.  Vol freshman right-handed pitcher Eric Martin is the son of former Tennessee swimmer Kent Martin, who was a five-time SEC champion and was a member of the 1978 national champion swim team.

Vols Not Fazed by SEC Coaches Poll

 The Southeastern Conference released its annual preseason coaches’ poll with Tennessee projected to finish sixth in the Eastern Division. While not the most ideal place to start the season, Serrano and his staff just see it as another opportunity and another challenge to overcome.

Serrano to Coach USA Collegiate National Team

 Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano will don the red, white and blue for the second time in his career this summer when he will serve as the manager of the 2012 Team USA Collegiate National Team. He previously served as the team’s pitching coach in 2010.  Joining Serrano on the 2012 Collegiate National Team staff will be Oregon head coach George Horton, Loyola Marymount head coach Jason Gill and Grand Canyon head coach Andy Stankiewicz.  The squad is set to travel to Cuba for a five-game series against its national team, July 5-9, before heading to The Netherlands for Honkbal Week in Haarlem, July 13-22.

Woody Completes Second Tour in Italy

 For the second time in as many summers, Tennessee baseball athletic trainer Jeff Wood traveled to Italy to assist in the Major League Baseball Academy.

The 12-year Vol veteran ventured to Tierrenia on the country’s northwestern Mediterranean coast, near Pisa, where the Italian Olympic Training Center is located. The academy brought together promising European and, in some cases, African baseball players, ages 15-19, for the best in U.S. major league coaching and instruction.

Renovations Continue at Lindsey Nelson Stadium

 Tennessee fans will notice a number of changes to Lindsey Nelson Stadium when they return for the first time in 2012. The most noticeable will be the new black padded wall in the outfield designed to provide more protection for players and create a cleaner, more simple look. In conjunction, the batter’s eye has been painted black as well. Another addition at LNS is the new playground on top of the batting cages down the right-field line for young Vol fans to enjoy during the game.
