RETURNING LEADERS
¢ Aug. 31 represents the earliest date for a UT season opener since 2003, when the Vols defeated Fresno State 24-6 on Aug. 30. Tennessee has won four consecutive August games, including wins over Fresno State, Wyoming (47-7 on 8/31/02), Texas Tech (52-17 on 8/30/97), and UNLV (62-3 on 8/31/96). ¢ UT is opening the season at a neutral site for the first time since defeating Wyoming on 8/31/02 at LP Field in Nashville in front of a decidedly pro-Tennessee crowd. ¢ UT is 85-24-6 (.765) in season openers dating back to 1891. In the last 28 seasons, Tennessee is 23-3-2 (.857) in season openers. Of those 28 games, 13 were played against teams currently in a BCS conference, and UT is 8-3-2 (.692) in those games. ¢ The Vols are 11-7 all-time in games played on Friday, with the most recent game being a 27-14 loss to Clemson on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. ¢ The Vols are 2-0-1 in opening games on neutral sites. ¢ Tennessee Season Openers at Neutral Sites Year/Site Result/Opponent 2002/Nashville W, 47-7 over Wyoming 1990/Anaheim, Calif. SEASON OPENERS
UT All-Time Record: 794-346-53 (.688) UT in August: 5-0-1 UT on Fridays: 11-7 UT in Georgia Dome: 2-6 UT vs. ACC: 98-58-7 (.623)
¢ Friday’s game is the third-ever scheduled meeting between Tennessee and NC State, and the teams have split the previous two meetings (1911 NC State, 16-0; 1939 UT, 13-0). ¢ Tennessee’s last non-Bowl Friday game was the last game vs. NC State (9/29/39), which was the season-opener that year. UT has played seven games on Friday since 1939, all bowl games, six January bowl games. ¢ A Raleigh newspaper from Nov. 8, 1893 references a game between NC State and Tennessee, won 12-0 by NC State. The game does not appear to have been a regularly-scheduled game and UT does not recognize this as official in the all-time record. ¢ Sam Bartholomew, grandfather of current Vol fullback Ben, had a 79-yard kickoff return to set up UT’s first TD in the 1939 game. ¢ The last UT win over a team that was in the ACC at the time of the game was a 23-6 win over Duke on 11/1/03. The last win for the Vols over a current ACC member was the following week, a 10-6 win over Miami (Fla.) at the Orange Bowl on 11/8/03. The game vs. NC State is the first in the regular season against a current ACC school since the consecutive games vs. Duke and Miami in 2003.

TEAM NOTES...
THE 2012 SCHEDULE
¢ Eight of Tennessee’s 2012 opponents earned a bid to play in a bowl game last season, including Alabama (BCS National Championship Game), Florida (Gator), Georgia (Outback), Mississippi State (Music City) Missouri (Independence), NC State (Belk), South Carolina (Capital One), and Mississippi State (Music City). ¢ The Vols have three current top 10 teams on the schedule, including #2/2 Alabama, #6/6 Georgia, and #9/9 South Carolina. #23/25 Florida is also ranked in the top 25. ¢ Tennessee’s 2012 opponents have a combined 2011 record of 81-71, which is the exact same record the Vols’ 2011 opponents compiled the season before, in 2010. Five of the 12 teams on the UT schedule in 2012 posted losing records a year ago: Akron (1-11), Georgia State (3-8), Troy (3-9), Vanderbilt (6-7), and Kentucky (5-7).
EARLY RETURNS
¢ Tennessee received votes in both the preseason Associated Press (15 points) and USA Today Coaches’ polls (3 points). There are six SEC schools currently ranked in the Top 25 in both polls, including five in the top 10: Alabama (2 AP/2 Coaches), LSU (3 AP/1 Coaches), Georgia (6 AP/6 Coaches), South Carolina (9 AP/9 Coaches), Arkansas (10 AP/10 Coaches), Florida (23 AP/25 Coaches). Auburn is also ranked 25th in the Coaches’ poll. UT has not been ranked in the top 25 in either poll since a No. 18 ranking heading into week one of the 2008 season.
FOR STARTERS
¢ The Vols feature 18 returning starters, including nine on offense, seven on defense, placekicker, and punter. Among those, there are seven offensive players who remain listed as starters on the current UT depth chart, including TE Mychal Rivera, LG Dallas Thomas (started at LT in 2010-11), RT Zach Fulton, RT Ja’Wuan James, WR Justin Hunter, QB Tyler Bray and FB Ben Bartholomew.
TV
TIME
SERIES/RESULT NOTE
¢ On defense, there are eight returning starters currently listed as starters or co-starters on the UT depth chart, including DE Maurice Couch, LB Jacques Smith, LB A.J. Johnson, LB Curt Maggitt, DB Prentiss Waggner, DB Brent Brewer, DB Brian Randolph, and DB Marsalis Teague.
BRAND NEW LOOK
¢ While Head Coach Derek Dooley is on his third season with the Vols, there have been some new additions to the Tennessee coaching staff this offseason. In total, seven new coaches were added to the mix while offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and Darin Hinshaw were the only assistant coaches retained on the staff. However, Hinshaw moved from coaching quarterbacks to coaching the wide receivers.
OWNING OVERTIME
¢ UT’s win over Vandy last season marked the 10th all-time victory in overtime for Tennessee, tying Missouri for the most in NCAA history. ¢ The Vols are 6-0 at home all-time in overtime and 4-3 on the road. In overtime games in which a scoring play ends the game, Tennessee is 6-1. ¢ The Vols are 2-1 in overtime in the Derek Dooley era, winning over UAB in 2010 and Vanderbilt last year while losing to North Carolina in the 2010 Franklin American Music City Bowl.
UP NEXT
TWEET THIS... The #Vols have won 15 of their last 17 season openers, including the last three in a row. The #Vols and #Wolfpack play for the first time in 26,635 days dating to the first meeting on Sept. 29, 1939. #Vols FB Ben Bartholomew’s grandfather Sam Bartholomew set up the first TD in the 1939 meeting vs. NC State with a 79KO return. The last time @Vol_Football played a regular-season game on a Friday was also against @PackFootball on Sept. 29, 1939. The #Vols are unbeaten all-time in games played in August (5-0-1), with the last win a 24-6 triumph over Fresno State (8/30/03). The #Vols are seeking to break a six-game losing streak @GeorgiaDome, after winning two #SEC titles in the Dome in 1997 & 1998.
¢ Tennessee plays Georgia State in the Vols’ home opener on Sat., Sept. 8 at Neyland Stadium. The game is the first-ever matchup between the two schools, and the Vols will attempt to extend their streak of consecutive home opener wins to 18.
#Vols QB @TBrayVol8 has thrown 35 career TD passes in just 17 games, already seventh-most in UT history.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The #Vols return 106 career starts on the O-Line for 2012. In 2010, UT had just three starts among its returning OL.
¢ Two current Vol football players have already earned their degree: fullback Ben Bartholomew and linebacker Herman Lathers.

OFFENSE
O-LINE PRIDE
¢ Two years ago, head coach Derek Dooley inherited an offensive line that had made a combined three career starts, all by then-senior Jarrod Shaw. Entering the 2012 season, that number has increased greatly, as the Vols’ offensive line corps features players who have combined for 106 career starts (Ja’Wuan James and Dallas Thomas, 25 each; Zach Fulton, 18; James Stone, 15; Alex Bullard, 12; Darin Gooch, 6; Marcus Jackson, 5). ¢ All five Tennessee offensive line starters return from one of seven units in the nation that did not start a senior last season and has utilized a combined 31 starts from true freshmen over the last two seasons. The group will hope to build on the dividends paid by increased experience in 2011, when the Tennessee offensive line allowed only 18 sacks, the third-lowest total in the SEC and trailing only LSU and Alabama. This was less than half of the 2010 total, when opponents sacked UT quarterbacks 41 times. ¢ Fewest Sacks Allowed, SEC, 2011 LSU 14 Alabama 15 TENNESSEE 18
BRAY TO HUNTER
¢ Bray connected with Hunter for an 81-yard touchdown with 8:36 left in the first quarter against Montana in last year’s season opener. The strike marked the second time the duo has hooked up for 80-plus yards, making them the third pair in UT history to do so. In 2010 on the first play against Ole Miss, Bray hit Hunter for an 80-yard TD. ¢ Other duos are Erik Ainge and Robert Meachem (84 yards at Memphis and 80 yards at Cal in 2006) and Alan Cockrell and Clyde Duncan (85 yards vs. Vanderbilt and 80 yards vs. Alabama in 1983).
HUNTER BACK FROM TORN ACL
¢ As a sophomore last season, wide receiver Justin Hunter recorded 17 receptions for 314 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during the first quarter of Tennessee’s game at Florida on Sept. 17. The Virginia Beach, Va., native missed the remainder of the 2011 season. ¢ Before going down with injury, Hunter’s 302 receiving yards in the first two games were the most all-time by a Tennessee receiver in that span, while his 16 receptions are the second-most. Johnny Mills had 17 receptions after two games in 1966. Robert Meachem had 15 receptions for 297 yards in UT’s first two games of 2007. ¢ At the time of his injury, Hunter was ranked first in the SEC and among the top 10 in the NCAA in both receiving yards and receptions.
BIG PLAY NEAL
¢ After splitting time between tailback and wide receiver last season, Rajion Neal won the starting tailback job coming out of training camp this year. In 2011, he led all active Vols in both average yards per reception (20.7)
and carry (5.0/min. 10 carries). ¢ His first career touchdown, a 20-yard run vs. Buffalo, was Tennessee’s longest rushing TD last season. ¢ Neal’s biggest plays in 2011 came through the air. In the final game of the season vs. UK, Neal hauled in a 53-yard reception for UT’s lone TD. He also caught a 50-yard pass from Justin Worley vs. Arkansas and a 38-yarder from Matt Simms vs. LSU. ¢ Neal’s 134 rushing yards ranked third on the Vols, while his pair of touchdowns on the ground were tied for second. His 269 receiving yards ranked fourth.
RIVERA ROCKIN’ IT
¢ Named to the John Mackey Award Watch List in 2011, UT junior tight end Mychal Rivera is Tennessee’s leading returning receiver after finishing second on the team in receptions (29) and receiving yards (344) last year. ¢ Rivera ranked fourth in the SEC and 35th nationally among tight ends with 29 receptions in 2011. Additionally, he ranked fourth in receiving yards (344) among SEC tight ends, which was also good for 29th in the country.
¢ 2011 Top SEC Tight Ends (By Receptions) Name School Receptions Orson Charles Georgia 45 Chris Gragg Arkansas 41 Brad Smelley Alabama 34 Mychal Rivera Tennessee 29 ¢ 2011 Top SEC Tight Ends (By Receiving Yards) Name School Receiving Yards Orson Charles Georgia 574 Chris Gragg Arkansas 518 Brad Smelley Alabama 356 Mychal Rivera Tennessee 344 ¢ Rivera hauled in a career-high six receptions for 54 yards against Cincinnati on Sept. 10, which marked the most catches in a single game by a Volunteer tight end since Chris Brown had seven at Cal on Sept. 1, 2007.
DEFENSE & SPECIAL TEAMS FANTASTIC FRESHMEN
¢ A five-time freshman All-America honoree, true freshman linebacker A.J. Johnson led all SEC freshmen in tackles and ranked second on the Vols with 80 in 2011. He ranked tied for 14th overall in the SEC in tackles (6.8/ game) and seventh in SEC games only with 65 (8.1/game). ¢ A.J Johnson finished one tackle behind Austin Johnson for the team lead last season, coming up just short of becoming the first true freshman in school history to lead Tennessee in tackles. He and fellow true freshman LB Curt Maggitt ranked 1-2 among SEC freshmen in tackles per game (Johnson, 6.8; Maggitt, 5.1). ¢ Johnson and Maggitt were the first true freshmen to start at linebacker for UT since freshman eligibility was reinstated in 1972. Additionally, DB Justin Coleman was the first true freshman to start in the secondary in the season opener for the Vols since Eric Berry in 2007 at California. ¢ Johnson also ranked second in Tennessee history among true freshmen in tackles, 15 behind Eric Berry’s standard of 86 in 2007. Among UT true freshman who played in the front seven, Johnson had the record for single-season tackles.
PRESEASON ALL-SEC Four current Vols -- seniors Dallas Thomas and Prentiss Waggner, junior Justin Hunter, and sophomore A.J. Johnson -- were named preseason All-SEC by the coaches and/or media. Second Team Justin Hunter, WR
Prentiss Waggner, DB
Third Team Dallas Thomas, OL
A.J. Johnson, LB
SPOTLIGHT ON TYLER BRAY ¢ Sophomore quarterback Tyler Bray missed five games over six weeks in 2011 after suffering a fractured right thumb in the fourth quarter against Georgia on Oct. 8. ¢ The sophomore slinger leads all active SEC quarterbacks with six career 300-yard passing games. Arkansas’ Tyler Wilson is second with five. Bray has eclipsed 300 yards passing in six of his 12 career starts. ¢ Bray’s 14 TDs and 1,579 yards through the first four games of 2011 were the second-most by a Tennessee QB. In 1997, Peyton Manning (1997) compiled 1,669 yards and 16 TDs en route to singleseason school records of 37 TDs and 3,819 yards. ¢ Bray has averaged 294.1 yards passing per game in his 12 career starts, and Tennessee is 8-4 in those games, including a 6-1 mark at Neyland Stadium. At the time of his injury, his 315.8 passing yards per game ranked ninth nationally and first in the SEC. He is 8-3 in regular-season starts. ¢ Since becoming UT’s primary QB at halftime of the South Carolina game on 10/30/10, Bray is 256-of-439 (58.3%) for 3,688 yards, 35 TDs and just 14 INTs. ¢ Bray set a UT record, throwing for at least two touchdowns in 10 consecutive games (10/30/10 at South Carolina-10/1/11 vs. Buffalo). His 17 passing touchdowns still ranked third in the SEC and tied for 54th nationally in 2011. ¢ With 4 TDs vs. Cincinnati last season, Bray set the UT record with eight consecutive games with multiple touchdown throws, breaking Peyton Manning’s previous mark of seven, as Manning accomplished the feat from the 1997 Florida Citrus Bowl vs. Northwestern through the Alabama game in 1997. ¢ Tennessee Career Passing Touchdowns Name TD Years GP 1. Justin Coleman was the first true frosh DB to start since Eric Berry in 2007.
FRESHMAN FOCUS ¢ Three of Tennessee’s five leading tacklers were freshmen in A.J. Johnson (2nd/80), Curt Maggitt (t3rd/56) and Brian Randolph (5th/55), making the Vols the only among all 120 NCAA D-I FBS squads with three of its top five tacklers being freshmen. UT was also the only team in the country with two true freshmen among its top three tacklers. ¢ Additionally, the trio all ranked in the top five on Tennessee’s all-time true freshman tackle-leaders list, including Johnson’s 80 (second-most).
AMAZING A.J. ¢ Johnson finished second on the Vols in tackles with 80, the most among SEC freshmen. He was one of four true freshmen to rank among the top two on his team in tackles among all D-I FBS schools (Mark Murphy - Indiana, Derrick Matthews - Houston, Denzel Perryman- Miami (Fla.)). ¢ Johnson at least shared the Vols’ lead in tackles four times this season (UF, LSU, Bama, SC). ¢ Johnson ranked second on Tennessee’s all-time true freshman tackle-leaders list with 80. ¢ Johnson was the first true freshman in UT history to
record three 10-plus tackle games, recording 13 against No. 2 Alabama, 11 vs. No. 1 LSU and 12 vs. No. 14 South Carolina. He was also the first Tennessee defender to notch three consecutive double-digit tackle performances since Nick Reveiz did it four straight times in 2010 (Oregon-LSU). ¢ Johnson was awarded SEC Freshman of the Week (Oct. 22) honors for his career-best 13-tackle performance at Alabama which rank as the second-most by a Tennessee true freshman, behind only Berry’s 14-tackle game vs. UK in 2007. Johnson now holds three of UT’s top-four tackle games by a true freshman, joining Berry’s two efforts, and a 12-tackle game by Reggie White against Virginia in 1980. ¢ Single-Game Tackles by UT True Freshmen Player Tackles Opponent Date Eric Berry 14 at Kentucky 11/24/07 A.J. He’s the first freshman to have more than one fumble recovery since Eric Berry had a pair in 2007. ¢ Johnson ranked 13th nationally with 46 tackles against opponents ranked in the AP poll. He was also seventh with 8.1 stops per SEC game.
WAGGNER ALL OVER THE SECONDARY ¢ Junior Prentiss Waggner shifted around the secondary in 2011 and produced from all angles. Waggner, who has started the last 25 games, will start at cornerback this season after spending most of last year playing safety. ¢ Waggner had a team-best nine passes defended, matching his total from 2010, and was tied for sixth on the squad with 48 tackles. His 40 solo tackles were second on the Vols. ¢ Waggner turned in five tackles, an interception and a sack against South Carolina. His 54-yard interception return against the Gamecocks matched his career-high 54-yard return against UT Martin in 2010, which was the Vols’ longest INT return that season.
BIG PLAY GORDON ¢ In last year’s final home game, defensive back Eric Gordon returned a game-winning interception 90 yards in overtime vs. Vanderbilt. The INT return for a TD was the first defensive score in OT in the FBS since Sept. 9, 2005, when Ohio DB Dion Byrum picked off Tyler Palko of Pittsburgh and returned it for a score.
SPOTLIGHT ON A.J. JOHNSON ¢ Tennessee true freshman linebacker A.J. Johnson led all SEC freshmen in tackles and ranked second on the Vols with 80 in 2011. ¢ Johnson was named a Freshman All-American by five different organizations (FWAA, Yahoo! Sports, Phil Steele, The Sporting News and FoxSports), setting a school record. His five awards bested the previous mark of four set by Eric Berry in 2007. ¢ Johnson ranked third in total tackles among all true freshmen in the nation. ¢ NCAA D-I FBS True Freshmen Tackle Leaders Player Team Pos. ¢ The 90-yard returned tied for the fifth-longest INT return in school history. His 107 INT return yards in 2011 were the most on the Vols. ¢ Gordon was just the third Vol since 2000 to have at least 100 INT return yards in a season. Janzen Jackson had 114 in 2010, while Eric Berry topped the UT record books with an SEC record 265 INT return yards in 2008 to one-up his 222 return yards as a freshman in 2007.
DEVRIN DASHES ¢ Devrin Young had eight punt returns for 94 yards and 27 kick returns for 628 yards last season. His 94 punt return yards were the most by a Vol in a single season since Gerald Jones recorded 150 yards in 2008 on 15 returns. ¢ Young’s 628 kickoff return yards ranked as the fifth most by a Vol in a single season all-time, while his 722 total kick return yards rank seventh. ¢ Additionally, his 27 kickoff returns were tied for the fourth-most in a season. ¢ UT Single-Season Kickoff Return Yards Player KOR Yards Year 1. The bright future on the horizon for UT football was exemplified by performances from talented freshmen classes. During the last two seasons, Tennessee has played 47 freshmen, including 32 true freshmen, the latter of which ties with Florida’s total for the most in the nation since the beginning of the 2010 season. The infusion of talented young players, almost all of whom will play significant roles on the 2012 team, began shortly after Dooley was named Tennessee’s 22nd football coach on Jan. 15, 2010. Dooley’s first two recruiting classes include six Freshman AllAmericans, and eight players who were named Freshman All-SEC over the last two seasons. Additionally, Freshman All-American linebackers A.J. Johnson and Curt Maggitt ranked first and second, respectively, among SEC freshman tackle leaders per game in 2011. Tennessee was the only team in Division I FBS in 2011 with three freshmen (true or redshirt) among its top five tackle leaders. The increased commitment to excellence in all facets of the program is also present in the state-of-the-art, $40 million Football Training Center that is opening soon. The facility, redesigned by Dooley upon his arrival, will be the finest of its kind in the nation. He also established a new academic accountability system shortly after accepting his current position. Determined to make immediate strides in changing the culture of the program, Dooley created the Vol for Life (VFL) program, a comprehensive player support and character education program, in his first year at Tennessee. The four-year VFL curriculum focuses on the often-overlooked personal growth of the student-athlete, encompassing the following topics: character education, personal finance, life skills, career development, spiritual growth, community service, mental conditioning, personal branding and navigating the social media landscape. Dooley has led by example as well, speaking at numerous events throughout Knoxville and the entire state of Tennessee to help raise more than $1,000,000 for children and other causes in the local community. The youngest son Derek Dooley is in his third season as UT’s head coach of Georgia legend Vince Dooley, who coached the Bulldogs and has an 11-14 record with the Vols. Of the 12 coaches for 25 seasons and claimed six league titles and the 1980 who have seen a third season at Rocky Top, 11 have national championship, Dooley never accepted the predeposted a winning record that year, including five with termined path to success. He played his college football at at least eight wins and two with 10-plus. Philip Fulmer Virginia, turning down scholarship offers elsewhere to walk on and later earn his own scholarship from Cavaliers head had the best third year, going 11-1 and finishing ranked coach George Welsh. third in the nation. ¢ Seven of Tennessee’s nine assistant coaches are new to the staff this season, including defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri, who comes to Rocky Top after three years at Alabama. The lone holdovers are offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and Darin Hinshaw, who has switched to wide receivers and added recruiting coordinator to his title. ¢ Although new to the coaching staff, running backs coach Jay Graham is no stranger to Tennessee having played for the Vols from 1993-96. He ranks seventh all-time on the UT career rushing chart with 2,609 yards. He earned All-SEC Second Team honors as both a junior and a senior, and helped lead the Vols to three bowl victories.

CAPACITY /// 102,455 The Best Just Got Better
The Home of the Vols got a makeover in 2010, transforming one of college football’s meccas into an aesthetic masterpiece. The concrete walls that used to hold up the west side were replaced with brick. Below the press box, six new panels display some of the finest to ever don the Orange and White-- Al Wilson, Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Reggie White, Peyton Manning, Johnny Majors and Doug Atkins. Most noticeable from the outside are the approximately 700,000 bricks that totally transformed the look of the stadium’s north and west sides. Standing in the middle of that transformation is the majestic Gate 21 plaza area. Six lofty archways dominate the entrance, which doubles during the work week as a key campus transportation hub. No doubt the traffic on game days is just as hectic. Adjacent to the Gate 21 plaza is another change, the new amphitheater at the corner of Phillip Fulmer Way and Andy Holt Avenue. The Vol Network’s Kickoff Call-In Show takes place there, sporting spiffy new digs after spending years on a make-shift platform in front of a worn down hillside. Just inside Gate 21, the Tennessee Official Team Shop is open for business six days a week under management of the UT Bookstore. Four other souvenir locations are located throughout the stadium, including one in an exclusive new seating area.
17 Straight Years with 100,000+
Tennessee has had at least one home crowd of 100,000-plus in each of the last 16 seasons. Only Michigan has a longer streak with the Wolverines’ dating back to 1975.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT NEYLAND STADIUM
NEYLAND STADIUM
“The big games I played in Neyland Stadium are right up there with the Super Bowl. It is still one of the most electric atmospheres I have ever experienced, and the passion of the fans is what makes the difference.” -- Peyton Manning, Former Vol and Denver Broncos QB “It is a remarkable experience. It starts with the Vol Walk down to the stadium, and the energy just builds and builds until you run through the ‘T’ for kickoff.” -- Jerod Mayo, Former Vol and New England Patriots LB “I’ve been to LSU, Florida State and Texas and almost every place that could be considered one of the toughest places to play. But we went down to Knoxville for a night game, and that Tennessee crowd was the most impressive that I have ever faced. Neyland Stadium was just electric.” -- Bob Davie, ESPN game analyst and former Notre Dame head coach “It’s static noise. You can’t hear anything. You go up and down the line -- your wide receivers, your running backs, your tight ends -- nobody can hear. Nobody.” -- Nate Longshore, Former Cal quarterback (2006) “If you ever want to know what tradition means, come watch a game at Neyland Stadium.” -- Craig James, ESPN College Football Analyst
THE GENERAL
The Proverbial, Perpetual Yardstick
One of the greatest coaches in the history of the game of football, Gen. Robert Reese Neyland is still, and will most likely always be, the yardstick by which all Tennessee football coaches are measured. For 21 years, he led the Big Orange to win after win and championship after championship. His 173 wins, seven conference titles and four national championships set the bar at one of the nation’s finest football institutions. According to UT legend Gus Manning, no one summed up Neyland and his coaching ability better than Wallace Wade: “He could take his and beat yours or take yours and beat his.” -- Wallace Wade, Alabama and Duke head coach and Neyland rival.
Gen. Neyland’s Maxims of Football
1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. 2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way -- SCORE. 3. If at first the game or the breaks go against you, don’t let up -- put on more steam. 4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game. 5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle -- for this is the WINNING EDGE. 6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made. 7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.

STAT COMPARISON (2011)
TENNESSEE VS. NC STATE LAST TIME OUT Sept. 29, 1939 - Tennessee 13, NC State 0 (Raleigh, N.C.)
From: The Volunteer Yearbooks, 1940 Scoring twice within the first seven minutes of play, the Volunteers opened the season with a 13-0 victory over North Carolina State. The game was played at Raleigh before 13,000 homecoming fans. Tennessee played sluggishly after the first quarter and bore scant resemblance to the outfit that won the 1939 Orange Bowl game from Oklahoma. Tennessee’s first touchdown was featured by Captain Sammy Bartholomew’s 79-yard runback of the opening kickoff to the State six-yard line. Two short gains by Len Coffman advanced the ball to the three and Bob Foxx went over on a reverse. A few minutes later a pass, Cafego to Andridge, netted another touchdown and this time Cafego kicked the extra point. The Vols failed to block up to their usual standard on the offense but a stout defense kept the State backs out of scoring distance. Abe Shires was the outstanding lineman on the field with his jarring tackles. Tennessee made 12 first downs to State’s three and gained a net yardage of 248 to 25 for the Wolfpack. However, penalties totaling 85 yards were called on Tennessee.

LAST 20 SEASON OPENERS
CONTINUING THE FAMILY TRADITION When Tennessee and NC State last played 73 years ago, Sammy Bartholomew, grandfather of current Vol fullback Ben, played a big role in UT’s 13-0 win. The UT blocking back returned a kickoff 76 yards to the six-yard line to set up the Orange and White’s first touchdown of the day. Sammy and Ben aren’t the only Bartholomew’s to suit up for the Big Orange either, as Ben’s brother Will was a fullback at Rocky Top from 1998-2001, serving as team captain as a senior.

¢ Two high-profile NFL Vols are returning to the gridiron after sitting most or all of the 2011 season. Peyton Manning missed all of 2011 with a neck injury which required the four-time NFL regular-season MVP to have four surgeries to repair it. Manning, who is now a Bronco, returned to the field on August Thursday, Aug. 9 for the first time since the 2010 playoffs. 2010 first round draft pick Eric Berry missed almost all of the 2011 season after tearing his ACL in the first quarter of the Chiefs’ first game of the season. Berry has also made his return to the field in this 2012 preseason.
