VOLS OFF TO BEST START EVER ¢ In 105 years of Tennessee baseball history, the Vols have made four College World Series appearances, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and won three SEC championships... But only the 2014 Diamond Vols have started a season 12-0. ¢ Tennessee’s previous best start in program history was 8-0, set in the 1992 and 2003 seasons. ¢ UT has recorded three-straight weekend series sweeps for the first time since 2005. If the Vols were to sweep Arizona State, it would be the first time UT has swept four-consecutive weekend series since the 1997 campaign. Media Credentials

Media credentials will be issued to members of the working media only. Children and other non-workers will not be allowed. Requests for credentials should be made by calling Assistant Media Relations Director Brian Bruce at least one day in advance of each home game or series. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations Office will be left at the ticket will call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Postgame Interviews

Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is available to meet any working member of the media following the game in the video room at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Media are asked to conduct player interviews in the video room, and media members are not permitted in the locker room or or clubhouse area.

Interviews with visiting team members also may be done on the field, subject to the policy of the visiting team’s media relations representative.

Photographers

Media credentials are required for all photographers and television media. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations office will be left at the ticket will-call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Photo decks are located atop the stairwells behind the first- and third-baselines. There are also field-level photo wells at the far end of each dugout. Both still and television photographers are welcome to shoot from these spots. Television crews are welcome to film from the mezzanine level underneath the press box.

Photographers will not be permitted in or between the dugouts.

The Press Box

The Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box is for working members of the media only. The press box is located atop the grandstand behind home plate and includes space for working members of the press, official and visiting scorers, public address announcer and scoreboard operator.

Also located on the press level are two radio booths and a television/VIP booth. Admission to the press box is by credential only.

Press Box Services

Updated cumulative statistics, game notes and scorecards, along with team rosters, will be available in the press box at each home game. A final box score will be compiled and distributed at the completion of each game.

An official scorer is assigned to all home games, and Brian Bruce will keep the media informed of all scoring decisions, notable facts and records.

Internet

High-speed wireless Internet is available in the Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box, including both radio booths and the television booth. There also are a limited number of DSL connections available for use by the media in the press box (but not in the radio booths), and phone lines for dial-up access are available as well. Dave Serrano’s first two seasons at Tennessee were met with a renewed sense of excitement and optimism and now, as he begins his third year as the UT head coach, the Vols look to build on the foundation that has been set and continue their trek to return to a spot among the nation’s elite.

The Orange and White’s first campaign under Serrano saw it record wins over half of the 2011 College World Series field, downing No. 16 Texas, No. 10 South Carolina, No. 4 Florida and Vanderbilt. The Vols also defeated No. 2 Kentucky, handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season, and No. 19 Georgia to give them victories over five different ranked teams in 2012.

Serrano’s second season at Rocky Top featured one of the youngest teams in the nation with a NCAA-leading 18 true freshmen on the roster. The Vols posted a series victory over No. 13 Kentucky and wins over No. 14 Arkansas and perennial power No. 20 Arizona State.

Fans in Knoxville made Serrano’s first two seasons an immediate success in the stands as the Big Orange fan base came out in droves to Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Over the course of the team’s 33-game home schedule in 2012, 63,084 Volunteer faithful clicked the turnstiles, the second-highest total in school history. Right out of the gate in 2013 Tennessee set a school record for a home-opening weekend, as 5,508 fans were on hand for the three games against Arizona State. The Vols averaged 1,881 fans per home contest last season, marking the fourth-highest total in school history.

On the field under Serrano, Tennessee found quick success as well, needing just 30 games to reach 20 wins in 2012, its fastest path to that mark since going 20-8 to open the 2005 campaign which resulted in a trip to the College World Series.

The Vols roared out of the gates in their first season under Serrano, winning their first seven games to get off to the second-best start in school history. That 7-0 record also marked the best by any UT skipper to start his Tennessee managerial career, topping the previous record of 4-0 last attained over 100 years prior in 1911.

Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program following a nationwide search after the 2010 campaign. A former UT assistant, he was welcomed back to the Big Orange family on June 15, 2011.

A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 11 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano enters his third season at Rocky Top with a career record of 347-200-1 (.634) in nine seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year at the helm of the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four campaigns with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009.

Serrano, 49, has returned to the site of his first Division I job, as he served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97-36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995.

Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003) and was born on June 28, 1964, in Torrence, Calif. He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zachary and Parker.

TWO PROGRAMS TO OMAHA Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is one of only 11 coaches in NCAA history to lead two programs to the College World Series.

Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team which he led to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands.

After opening its training with 10 days in North Carolina where it played a selection of collegiate summer teams and participated in the second annual Prospect Classic with the USA Baseball 18U squad, Serrano then led the Collegiate National Team into uncharted territory as it became the first U.S. squad to travel to Cuba to take on its national team in 16 years.

Despite playing a veteran Cuban squad which featured 12 players who have competed in the World Baseball Classic and four who have done so twice, the Collegiate National Team proved its mettle by bookending the five-game series at Latin American Stadium in Havana with victories. That series would continue in the Netherlands where they split two more decisions as the U.S. went 5-2 during Honkbal Week to claim the bronze.

¢ After hitting .625 and slugging 1.250 over a series sweep of Quinnipiac this past weekend, junior infielder Will Maddox was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. ¢ The Gainesville, Ga., native led Tennessee to its third weekend series sweep of the season and to the best start in program history (10-0) with a 5-for-8 performance at the plate. ¢ Maddox hit a three-run homer, two doubles and scored a team-high five runs for the series. He also drew a team-high four walks against the Bobcats. ¢ The middle infielder is currently hitting .385 for the season with team highs in runs scored (13), slugging percentage (.692) and stolen bases (4).

Maddox, who has yet to strikeout in 36 plate appearances, ranks second in the SEC in both slugging and on-base percentage (.543). Senior infielder Taylor Smart leads the category (.579). ¢ Maddox becomes the first Tennessee player to be named SEC Player of the Week since former Vol Drew Steckenrider earned the honor on Feb. 20, 2012. It’s Maddox’s first SEC honor since being named to the 2012 SEC All-Freshman Team after becoming just the third freshman since 1980 to lead UT in batting average (Chris Burke, Kentrail Davis)

¢ Leadoff: Right fielder Scott Price’s 20-game hit streak came to an end on Saturday against Quinnipiac. During the stretch, the Leesville, S.C., native was 31-78 (.397) with 17 RBIs, 15 runs scored, one triple, one home run and three stolen bases. Price tied former Vol Kris Bennett for the fourth-longest hit streak in program history at 20 games, which Bennett did during the 2000 season. ¢ 2nd Spot: Sophomore shortstop A.J. Simcox has been a constant in the No. 2 slot over his first two years at UT, having hit there 39 times in 59 starts. Simcox, who finished his freshman season with a .283 average, is currently hitting at a .381 clip. ¢ 3rd Spot: Left fielder Christin Stewart is tied for the team lead with two home runs. Stewart didn’t hit his second home run until his 32nd game last season on April 21. ¢ Cleanup: Freshman designated hitter Nick Senzel is just the second true freshman to hit cleanup on opening day since 1990. Andrew Lee did so in 2013. The rookie leads all SEC freshman in batting average (.406), slugging percentage (.656), on-base percentage (.535) and runs scored (13). Senzel has reached base safely in all 11 games he’s played in. ¢ 5th Spot: Center fielder Vincent Jackson has drawn a team-high 12 walks this season (T-2nd in the SEC) and is the only UT starter yet to strikeout. ¢ 6th Spot: Catcher David Houser - formerly a switch hitter - is now focusing solely on hitting from the right side. He’s hitting .310 with 11 RBIs. While behind the plate, Houser allowed just one stolen base. ¢ 7th Spot: Freshman first baseman Nathaniel Maggio, who stands 6-4 and weighs in at 220 pounds, owns one of the Vols’ SEC-leading six triples this season. ¢ 8th Spot: Senior infielder Taylor Smart, who hit .267 last season, currently leads the Vols with a .412 batting average and .556 on-base percentage. Smart’s average ranks sixth in the SEC and his on-base clip leads the league. His glove has also been on display through 12 games in 2014. Smart has made spectacular plays at both third base and shortstop this season. The team’s 2013 Phil Garner Defensive Player Award winner is second on the team with 33 assists. ¢ 9th Spot: Junior infielder Will Maddox - the defending SEC Player of the Week - is hitting .409 (9-for-22) against right-handed pitchers this season. He also ranks third in the league with a .091 opposing batting average. ¢ Saturday Starter: Sophomore righty Andrew Lee - the Vols’ cleanup hitter in 2013 - returns to the mound for the first time since Tommy John surgery in the summer of 2012 this season. ¢ Sunday Starter: Freshman righty Kyle Serrano - the son of head coach Dave Serrano - has allowed just nine hits and struck out 11 over his three starts.

QUICK HITS: TEAM ¢ Tennessee is one of just two undefeated teams remaining among the 294 teams in Division I. Both teams reside in the Southeastern Conference, as No. 1 South Carolina is also unbeaten. Two teams Central Connecticut State and Brown - have yet to open their 2014 seasons. ¢ The Volunteers currently hold the nation’s longest winning streak at 13 games, dating to last season’s season-finale win over Texas A&M. ¢ Tennessee has scored at least one run in every inning this season. IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME...  It didn’t take long for fans in Knoxville to buy into Coach Serrano and the Vols. In his first season at Tennessee, the Vols had 13 home crowds of 2,000+, which was twice as many as it had all of 2011.

SERRANO, SIMCOX & STEWART HONORED  Tennessee sophomore shortstop A.J. Simcox, sophomore outfielder Christin Stewart and freshman right-handed pitcher Kyle Serrano were recognized as top 50 players in their classes by Baseball America prior to the start of the season.  The organization tabbed the highly-touted Serrano ninth on its list of freshmen. Serrano ranks as the No. 1 freshman in the SEC and the No. 4 freshman right-hander in the nation.  Perfect Game, one of the nation’s top scouting services, also named Serrano as its preseason favorite for SEC Freshman of the Year.  Baseball America tabbed Simcox the 14thbest sophomore in the country and the No. 2 shortstop in his class. The organization also named

Stewart as the No. 37 sophomore in the nation and the sixth-ranked outfielder in the class.

FATHER/SON-COACH/PLAYER DUOS  With freshman right-hander Kyle Serrano joining his father and Vols head coach Dave Serrano at UT, they become the third father/soncoach/player duo in program history.  From 2006-07, Tony Delmonico - another Farragut grad - played for his father and longtime Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico. An infielder, Tony hit .329 with 142 hits and 85 RBIs over his career. Rod Delmonico coached the Vols for 18 seasons (1990-2007), amassing 699 wins and three College World Series appearances.  The program’s longest tenured coach at 18 seasons (1963-1981), Bill Wright coached his son Barry Wright from 1979-80. A designated hitter both seasons, Barry hit .280 with five home run and 15 RBIs in 1980.

VOLS PICKED 5TH IN SEC EAST  The Tennessee Volunteers were predicted to finish fifth in the SEC Eastern Division, as voted by the league’s 14 head coaches.  Tennessee, which has won six total SEC championships (3 regular season, 3 tournament), received 39 points.  With five first-place votes, the South Carolina Gamecocks were predicted to win the 2014 title.

LSU (4), Mississippi State and Vanderbilt (1) were the other teams to receive first-place votes.

• Struck out 30 batters in 33.1 innings and helped close out three of the team’s four shutouts on the year.

• Recorded saves against Milwaukee (2/19), at Alabama (4/16), MTSU (5/10) and Auburn (5/19).

• First two career wins came against Ole Miss (3/26) and in the regular-season finale against Auburn (5/21), while his lone loss was at the hands of Indiana (3/5).

• Fanned a career-high five in 2.0 innings to earn the win over the Rebels.

HIGH SCHOOL • Graduated from Farragut High School in Knoxville where he was coached by Matt Buckner.

• Helped lead the Admirals to three consecutive state championships, going 19-0 with 137 strikeouts and an 0.85 ERA during his three seasons on the varsity squad.

• Farragut was 125-14 during that span.

• Also played first base, hitting .326 with 18 home runs and 77 RBIs during his prep career.

• Earned all-state, all-district and all-region honors in both 2009 and 2010 and was named a 2010 Honorable Mention Louisville Slugger High School All American.
