¢ UT’s pitchers combined for a 1.04 ERA abd 41 strikeouts over 27.0 innings on the weekend. Erin Gabriel was sensational, posting a perfect 0.00 ERA with 19 strikeouts and one unearned run allowed over 10.1 frames. ¢ Meghan Gregg was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after hitting .688 (11-for-16) with four homers, two doubles, 13 RBIs and six runs. She had five multi-RBI games and four multi-hit games including three games with three RBIs. Gregg came through in clutch moments for UT this week, with a pair of game-winning extra-base hits. She had two home runs, including a walk-off in UT’s 5-4 win over Northern Iowa on March 7. She also had the game-winning two-RBI double to give Tennessee the win by run rule (8-0, 5 innings) over Purdue on March 8. The five-game hitting streak she established this week is her career long. ¢ Gregg is the first Tennessee player to earn conference weekly honors this season and this week’s honor marks the 13th time a UT rookie has won the award. The Williamson, Ga., native is UT’s first SEC Freshman of the Week since Annie Aldrete earned that honor on March 31, 2014. WEEK 6 NOTES (ILLINOIS STATE, SOUTH CAROLINA) ¢ Tennessee enjoyed a pair of dominant wins over Illinois State on Tuesday. The Lady Vols scored a seasonhigh 19 runs, Lexi Overstreet smashed a grand slam and Annie Aldrete hit two home runs in a 19-3 (5) Game 1 win. Erin Gabriel threw a 16-strikeout, seven-inning no-hitter (UT’s 46th all-time). ¢ Gabriel’s Game 2 no-hitter vs. Illinois State was the first UT no-no to go seven frames since Monica Abbott shut down Texas A&M on May 31, 2007. Her 16 Ks were also the most in a Tennessee no-no since Abbott rang up 16 in that same game against the Aggies. ¢ UT’s 19 runs in the Game 1 win vs. Illinois State were its most since scoring 19 against Tennessee State on April 2, 2013. The Lady Vols’ 17 hits in the game were its most since racking up 18 against Texas A&M on April 12, 2014. ¢ Tennessee went 1-2 at South Carolina to open SEC play. Gretchen Aucoin had the best weekend in Columbia, hitting .778 average (7-for-9), three homers, eight RBIs, a 1.889 slugging percentage and a .833 on-base mark. ¢ South Carolina won Game 1 (3/13), 8-0 (6), ending Tennessee’s 28-game winning streak against the Gamecocks and marking the first time UT had been run ruled since June 6, 2010, when the Lady Vols lost to Arizona, 8-0, in five innings in the Women’s College World Series. ¢ The Lady Vols fell to the Gamecocks, 7-6 (9), in Game 2 (3/14). The loss marked UT’s first extra-inning contest since falling to Oklahoma, 5-3, in 12 frames on June 4, 2013, in Game 1 of the 2013 Women’s College World Series Championship Series. ¢ UT ended Week 6 with a 9-1 (5) win in Game 3 (3/15) against South Carolina. Aucoin hit her third homer of the weekend and she, Annie Aldrete, Rainey gaffin and Lexi Overstreet had two RBIs apiece.
WEEK 7 NOTES (WESTERN KENTUCKY, MISSOURI) ¢ Tennessee’s bats struggled to get going on March 17 as the No. 14 Lady Vols fell to Western Kentucky, 2-0, at Lee Stadium. The Lady Vols ran into one of the top pitchers in the nation as Western Kentucky’s (11-5) Miranda Kramer (8-4) ranked first in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings (12.9) and 14th in total strikeouts (130) entering the game. ¢ UT took two out of three against Missouri. Tennessee won Game 1, 12-4, in six innings. The Lady Vols’ 12 runs and 14 hits were its most in an SEC game since an 18-hit, 15-2 (5) win at Texas A&M on April 12, 2014. ¢ The Lady Vols fell to Missouri in Game 2, 9-8. UT scored six runs in the first inning, but the Tigers came back late with a six-run sixth. ¢ Tennessee won Game 3, 10-7, behind home runs from Meghan Gregg, Shaliyah Geathers and Megan Geer. ¢ Tennessee hit 10 home runs in its three-game series against Missouri, setting a new program record for home runs in an SEC season series. WEEK 8 NOTES (ETSU, TENNESSEE TECH, GEORGIA) ¢ Erin Gabriel threw the 12th perfect game in school history, striking out five over five innings in No. 14 Tennessee’s 10-0 (5) victory over ETSU on March 24. Gabriel was efficient throwing just 49 pitches with 37 for strikes. ¢ The win also marked Gabriel’s second no-hitter over the last two weeks as she threw her first no-no against Illinois State (seven innings, 16 strikeouts) on March 10. Gabriel’s perfect game was UT’s 11th solo perfect game (one pitcher used). Entering today, UT’s most recent perfect game was a six-inning, six-strikeout performance by Rainey Gaffin against Wright State on March 5, 2014. ¢ Gabriel now has the distinction of being just the fourth Tennessee pitcher to throw two no-hitters in the same season, joining the great Monica Abbott (four in 2004, six in 2005, six in 2006, seven in 2007), Megan Rhodes (two in 2005) and Ivy Renfroe (two in 2011, two in 2012). ¢ Annie Aldrete led the way offensively for Tennessee, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs. Megan Geer and Rainey Gaffin also homered in the win. Aldrete now has 27 career home runs, tying her with Shelby Burchell (2009-12) for eigth place on UT’s all-time list. ¢ Tennessee defeated Tennessee Tech, 6-1, on March 25. Annie Aldrete hit a three-run homer in the first inning, marking the 28th of her career and moving her into a tie with Carrie Swinford for seventh place on UT’s all-time list. With the win, Tennessee extended its winning streak against in-state opponents to 83 straight. Ralph Weekly and Karen Weekly have led UT to a perfect 78-0 record against in-state foes. The Lady Vols are 112-3 all-time against teams from the state of Tennessee. ¢ UT swept its three-game series against No. 7 Georgia. Tennessee enjoyed thrilling victories with backto-back, seventh-inning homers on Saturday to capture Game 1, 4-3, a five-run fifth inning that gave the Lady Vols a 6-2 win in Game 2 and a strange win by illegal pitch in the eighth inning to take Game 3, 1-0. ¢ Aldrete saw her season-long nine-game hitting streak come to an end with Game 2 of the Georgia series. Aldrete also had a six-game RBI streak end in that game. ¢ With the sweep of Georgia, UT improved to 7-2 agaisnt ranked teams this year, including a 4-0 mark against teams in the Top 10. WEEK 9 NOTES (AUBURN) ¢ Tennessee went 1-2 in a hard-fought three-game series at No. 7 Auburn -- a matchup between the top two power-hitting teams in the SEC. Gretchen Aucoin and Scarlet McSwain hit solo home runs in a 6-2 Game 1 loss. In Game 2, Tennessee surged with home runs by Aucoin, McSwain, Shaliyah Geathers and Tory Lewis to take an 8-6 win.
