AT FIRST GLANCE VOLS VS. CATS: SEC GAME OF THE WEEK ¢ Tennessee enters this weekend’s crucial series against No. 25 Kentucky with a half-game lead on Georgia for the 12th and final slot in the 2014 SEC Tournament, set to be played in Hoover, Ala., at the end of the month. The Vols also enter the series just a game behind both the Wildcats and Auburn. ¢ Thursday night’s opener is the “SEC Game of the Week,” and will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Dave Neal, Kyle Peterson and former Vol Chris Burke on the call (see pg. 4 for more on the VFL). ¢ With Tuesday’s tilt against Middle Tennessee cancelled, the Vols are coming off an impressive offensive showing at then-No. 6 LSU over the weekend. However, despite being tied or leading in the seventh inning or later in each of the three games, UT was only able to steal one win from the Tigers. ¢ Tennessee hit .304 in the three games at LSU and collected more hits (31) than any team has in a three-game series against the Tigers this season. ¢ The Vols chased Aaron Nola – arguably the nation’s best pitcher – in a season-low 5.2 innings. Having allowed just seven runs over 71.2 innings entering the game, UT put a five-spot (all earned) on the board against the Tigers’ ace. UT also registered eight hits against Nola, tying the most he’s allowed all season, and struck out just four times, the fewest of the season for Nola. ¢ UT took game two of the series by a 6-3 margin, marking its first win over LSU since April 2009. ¢ The Orange and White has managed just one win in its last three SEC series, with its last series win coming against Vanderbilt (April 4-6). ¢ No. 25 Kentucky and its high-powered offense enters the series having lost four of five games, and was swept for the first time all season at then-No. 12 Ole Miss last weekend.
