AT FIRST GLANCE
VOLS HIT THE ROAD FOR VITAL SERIES ¢ Tennessee heads to the Magnolia State this weekend for a pivotal three-game set against No. 21 Mississippi State. The Vols have not won a game in Starkville since 2010 and last won a series at Dudy Noble Field in 2004. ¢ UT did not play the Bulldogs last season but will be looking to reverse the results from the 2012 series in Starkville when MSU swept the Vols, including a pair of extra-inning nailbiters. ¢ The only three Vols to have played against MSU are Will Maddox, Parker Wormsley and Nick Williams. Maddox reached base four times and Womsley was 3-for-5 in the 2012 three-game set while Williams pitched once in relief in 2011 and started the series finale in 2012. In his two outings, Williams has struck out six while allowing just two runs on five hits over 7.2 innings of work.
VOLS TAKE DOWN CATS TO STAY IN HUNT ¢ Tennessee got back on track last weekend with a series win over No. 25 Kentucky, the Vols’ first series victory in nearly a month. Taking two out of three, UT improved to 10-14 in league play to stay in the SEC Tournament hunt. ¢ Christin Stewart led the Vols with six RBIs over the series. He leads the team in all major statistical categories, including batting average (.343), runs scores (39), hits (62), doubles (15), triples (6), home runs (4), RBIs (37) and slugging percentage (.558). He is also the only Vol to start all 46 games. ¢ After dropping the series opener on Thursday, UT got stellar starts from Nick Williams on Friday and Andy Cox on Saturday to claim the series win. Williams gave the Vols six gutsy innings, in which he allowed just two runs and struck out a season high eight. Cox carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against one of the nation’s top offenses,
