VOLS LOOKING FOR BEST START ¢ In 104 years of Tennessee baseball history, the Diamond Vols have only started two seasons - 1992 and 2003 - with eight straight wins. ¢ With series sweeps of Purdue and UNLV, and a midweek win over Appalachian State, the 2014 Volunteers have a chance to make it three seasons on Friday against Quinnipiac. ¢ It’s the second time under third-year head coach Dave Serrano that the Vols have started a season 7-0. ¢ In his first year at Tennessee, Serrano led the Vols to the second-best start to a season in school history, as they tallied seven straight wins to open the 2012 campaign. ¢ The 7-0 start also marked the best by any UT skipper to start his Tennessee managerial career, topping the previous mark of 4-0 set by William H. Newman in 1902 and tied by Z.G. Clevenger in 1911. ¢ A win on Friday would also mark the Vols’ fourth undefeated February (1987, 1992 & 2003). FRIDAY’S FIRST PITCH ¢ On Friday, the Tennessee baseball program will honor the memory of Knoxville native Eric Nelson, who passed away on Feb. 9 at age 52 after a lengthy battle with cancer. ¢ Jane Nelson, the wife of Eric and the mother of Quinnipiac sophomore Ryan Nelson, will throw out the first pitch of the series. Ryan, who will catch the pitch, graduated from Knoxville’s Catholic HS and went to Quinnipiac to play baseball and study law. ¢ Nelson owned Gourmet’s Market and Cosmo’s Cafe on Kingston Pike and was close to UT Associate AD Carmen Tegano and head coach Dave Serrano. ¢ Serrano scheduled this weekend’s series to give Nelson a chance to see his son play baseball for the Bobcats. Instead, the Vols will honor his memory.
