VOLS HOST IN-STATE RIVAL VANDY ¢ The 25th-ranked Vols welcome in-state rival Vanderbilt for a three-game SEC series from April 4-6, continuing UT’s stretch of five-consecutive games against teams from The Volunteer State. ¢ After the best start to a season in 105 years of program history, the Vols have struggled recently, dropping four in a row and six of their last seven. ¢ UT won its opening 12 games of the season. ¢ UT out-hit ETSU by a 6-3 margin on Tuesday, but was beat 2-1 off a game-winning two-run homer by National Player of the Week Clinton Freeman. ¢ Last weekend, UT was swept for the first time this season at No. 2 South Carolina. ¢ UT, which never trailed until the final hit of the opening two games, lost on a pair of walk-off home runs against SC. The Vols then suffered their first shutout of the season on Sunday. ¢ SC won the rain-delayed opener 3-2 in 14 innings, scored six runs with two outs in the ninth to take game two, 9-6, and earned the sweep with an 8-0 win. ¢ Tennessee holds the all-time advantage in the series against Vanderbilt by a 168-148-2 margin, dating back to 1897. However, VU has won five games in a row and eight of the last nine meetings. ¢ UT’s last series win over Vanderbilt came in 2010, when UT took two out of three in Knoxville.

Tennessee’s last win over the ‘Dores came in a 8-2 decision on May 4, 2012, also at home. ¢ UT holds a 57-29 advantage in Knoxville.

Media Credentials

Media credentials will be issued to members of the working media only. Children and other non-workers will not be allowed. Requests for credentials should be made by calling Assistant Media Relations Director Brian Bruce at least one day in advance of each home game or series. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations Office will be left at the ticket will call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Postgame Interviews

Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is available to meet any working member of the media following the game in the video room at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Media are asked to conduct player interviews in the video room, and media members are not permitted in the locker room or clubhouse area.

Interviews with visiting team members also may be done on the field, subject to the policy of the visiting team’s media relations representative.

Photographers

Media credentials are required for all photographers and television media. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations office will be left at the ticket will-call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Photo decks are located atop the stairwells behind the first- and third-baselines. There are also field-level photo wells at the far end of each dugout. Both still and television photographers are welcome to shoot from these spots. Television crews are welcome to film from the mezzanine level underneath the press box.

Photographers will not be permitted in or between the dugouts.

The Press Box

The Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box is for working members of the media only. The press box is located atop the grandstand behind home plate and includes space for working members of the press, official and visiting scorers, public address announcer and scoreboard operator.

Also located on the press level are two radio booths and a television/VIP booth. Admission to the press box is by credential only.

Press Box Services

Updated cumulative statistics, game notes and scorecards, along with team rosters, will be available in the press box at each home game. A final box score will be compiled and distributed at the completion of each game.

An official scorer is assigned to all home games, and Brian Bruce will keep the media informed of all scoring decisions, notable facts and records.

Internet

High-speed wireless Internet is available in the Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box, including both radio booths and the television booth. There also are a limited number of DSL connections available for use by the media in the press box (but not in the radio booths), and phone lines for dial-up access are available as well. Third Season at Tennessee Overall Record: 354-208-1 (.630) Cerritos College, 1985 Trinity College & University, 2003

Dave Serrano’s first two seasons at Tennessee were met with a renewed sense of excitement and optimism and now, as he begins his third year as the UT head coach, the Vols look to build on the foundation that has been set and continue their trek to return to a spot among the nation’s elite.

The Orange and White’s first campaign under Serrano saw it record wins over half of the 2011 College World Series field, downing No. 16 Texas, No. 10 South Carolina, No. 4 Florida and Vanderbilt. The Vols also defeated No. 2 Kentucky, handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season, and No. 19 Georgia to give them victories over five different ranked teams in 2012.

Serrano’s second season at Rocky Top featured one of the youngest teams in the nation with a NCAA-leading 18 true freshmen on the roster. The Vols posted a series victory over No. 13 Kentucky and wins over No. 14 Arkansas and perennial power No. 20 Arizona State.

Fans in Knoxville made Serrano’s first two seasons an immediate success in the stands as the Big Orange fan base came out in droves to Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Over the course of the team’s 33-game home schedule in 2012, 63,084 Volunteer faithful clicked the turnstiles, the second-highest total in school history. Right out of the gate in 2013 Tennessee set a school record for a home-opening weekend, as 5,508 fans were on hand for the three games against Arizona State. The Vols averaged 1,881 fans per home contest last season, marking the fourth-highest total in school history.

On the field under Serrano, Tennessee found quick success as well, needing just 30 games to reach 20 wins in 2012, its fastest path to that mark since going 20-8 to open the 2005 campaign which resulted in a trip to the College World Series.

The Vols roared out of the gates in their first season under Serrano, winning their first seven games to get off to the second-best start in school history. That 7-0 record also marked the best by any UT skipper to start his Tennessee managerial career, topping the previous record of 4-0 last attained over 100 years prior in 1911.

Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program following a nationwide search after the 2010 campaign. A former UT assistant, he was welcomed back to the Big Orange family on June 15, 2011.

A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 11 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano is in his third season at Rocky Top and has a career record of 354-208-1 (.630) in nine seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year at the helm of the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four campaigns with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009.

Serrano, 49, has returned to the site of his first Division I job, as he served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97-36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995.

Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003) and was born on June 28, 1964, in Torrence, Calif. He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zachary and Parker.

TWO PROGRAMS TO OMAHA Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is one of only 11 coaches in NCAA history to lead two programs to the College World Series.

Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team which he led to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands.

After opening its training with 10 days in North Carolina where it played a selection of collegiate summer teams and participated in the second annual Prospect Classic with the USA Baseball 18U squad, Serrano then led the Collegiate National Team into uncharted territory as it became the first U.S. squad to travel to Cuba to take on its national team in 16 years.

Despite playing a veteran Cuban squad which featured 12 players who have competed in the World Baseball Classic and four who have done so twice, the Collegiate National Team proved its mettle by bookending the five-game series at Latin American Stadium in Havana with victories. That series would continue in the Netherlands where they split two more decisions as the U.S. went 5-2 during Honkbal Week to claim the bronze.

Notes on the Vols...

VOLS RANKED IN TWO MAJOR POLLS ¢ Following the sweep at No. 2 South Carolina, the Vols dropped out of three of the five major college baseball polls. NEARLY 70 PERCENT WINS AT HOME ¢ Tennessee is 14-3 at home this season. ¢ With an all-time record of 490-222 (.688), the Vols have won nearly 70 percent of their games at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. COMING OUT SWINGING ¢ Tennessee has done the most damage early in games, outscoring its opponents 66-21 over the first three innings. ¢ The Vols have scored over 41 percent (66-of158) of their runs in the first three frames. ¢ Tennessee has plated an impressive 54 combined runs in the second and third innings in 2014.

The Vols are hitting .343 and .305 in the second and third frames, respectively in 2014. ¢ Individually, senior Taylor Smart is hitting .600 (9-for-15) and .364 (4-for-11) in the second and third innings this season, while freshman Nick Senzel is hitting .444 (4-for-9) in the second and .545 (6-for-11) in the third frame. Smart has six of his 13 RBIs in those innings, and Senzel has combined to score 11 of his 21 runs. ¢ Tennessee is 13-3 this season when scoring first and 6-0 when scoring in the first inning. ¢ The Vols have five wins when being out-hit by their opponents and are 12-2 when out-hitting the opposition in 2014.

DEFENSIVELY SOUND ¢ Following the coaching staff’s philosophy, the Vols rank sixth in the nation and second in the SEC with a .981 fielding percentage. The Big Orange has made just 21 errors this season, second-lowest in the league (Mississippi State, 18). ¢ Just nine Vols have committed errors this season and none have committed more than four. ¢ Senior infielder Taylor Smart has continued to stand out with his glove this season, flashing the leather on multiple occasions at both third base and shortstop. Smart is second on the team with 65 assists. Shortstop A.J. Simcox leads the way with 79.

SWIPING BAGS ¢ Tennessee was 6-for-7 on stolen base attempts in its last midweek game against Austin Peay (March 18). The six stolen bases are a seasonhigh for the Vols in 2014. ¢ Since, UT has been held to a combined three stolen bases against Auburn, South Carolina and ETSU. ¢ The Vols have stolen 50 bases this season, a mark ranks second in the SEC and eighth in the nation. Tennessee has been thrown out 16 times. ¢ Wofford leads the country with a ridiculous 88 stolen bases through 29 games. The Terriers have been caught stealing 18 times. ¢ 11 Vols have stolen at least one base in 2014. ¢ The race for the team lead in the category is a tight one. Junior Will Maddox and freshman Nick Senzel enter the series tied for the team lead with nine each. Senzel has been thrown out just once.

Maddox, who has been gunned down three times, has led the Vols in stolen bases the past two seasons (22 in 2013, 14 in 2012). ¢ Sophomore A.J. Simcox follows closely with eight. Vincent Jackson has six and junior college transfer Johnny Youngblood is 5-for-6. ¢ Youngblood, a native of Lexington, Ky., is a two-time MLB Draftee (2011 & 2012) and the Vols’ top pinch runner. ¢ Opponents have only stolen nine bases against the Volunteers in 2014. Sophomore catcher David Houser has caught 5-of-9 attempted base stealers, while junior Tyler Schultz has gunned out 4-of-9.

LAYING ONE DOWN ¢ A staple of the Tennessee approach, the Vols have dropped down 27 sacrifice bunts this season, which ranks sixth in the SEC and 50th in the nation. ¢ A.J. Simcox leads the team with eight sac bunts in 2014, which stands tied for second in the conference and 25th in the country. ¢ In addition, UT has executed 14 bunt singles and is hitting .583 (14-for-24) when squaring to bunt. ¢ Speedster Johnny Youngblood is a perfect 4-for-4 on bunt-single attempts in his first season as a Vol. Youngblood successfully executed three bunt singles in game two against South Carolina last weekend.

TOUGH TO SIT DOWN ¢ Tennessee sophomore center fielder Vincent Jackson has proven to be one of the toughest players in the SEC to strike out so far this season. ¢ Entering the series, Jackson has struck out a team-low six times (min. 50 ABs). The McDonough, Ga., native ranks third on the team with 13 walks. ¢ On average, Jackson strikes out just once every 14 at-bats, which ranks 96th in the nation and sixth in the SEC.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS

ON THE HILL ¢ Tennessee, which finished the 2013 season with a team ERA of 5.37, currently sports an impressive 2.83 clip on the mound this season. ¢ The Vols’ 2.83 ERA ranks 41st in the nation.

Amazingly, the 2.83 clip is only good enough for ninth-best in the SEC. ¢ The Vols rank 32nd in the nation with 7.55 hits allowed per nine innings. ¢ Tennessee has 10 pitchers currently under a

His 71 appearances rank fifth on the Vols’ all-time list. Vol great Todd Helton stands fourth with 72.  Sophomore southpaw Drake Owenby’s five saves this season moved him onto Tennessee’s top 10 all-time saves list with seven career saves.  The closer’s five saves are tied for fourth in the

SEC and 40th in the nation. He’s finished nine games for UT this season - tied for seventh-most in the SEC.  Helton holds the Tennessee saves record with 23 from 1993-95.

BACK TO BACK SEC HONORS ¢ After leading the Vols to a midweek sweep of La Salle and a series win at No. 24 Arizona State, freshman designated hitter Nick Senzel was named the SEC Player of the Week (March 3), marking the second-straight week a Vol earned the award. ¢ The Farragut HS alum hit .417 for the week, going 5-for-12 at the plate with a double and four runs scored. Senzel led UT with seven RBIs, drew three walks and was 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts. ¢ Will Maddox was named the SEC Player of the Week (March 10) after posting monster numbers vs.

Quinnipiac. Maddox hit .625, and slugged 1.250, going 5-for-8 with a three-run home run, two doubles and scored a team-best five runs over the series. ¢ The Vols earned back-to-back SEC Player of the Week accolades for the first time since 1995 one of four seasons the Vols went to Omaha. ¢ Dating back to 1985, UT earned consecutive SEC Player of the Week awards on just the one other occasion. In 1995, Scott Vieira (April 17) and Todd Helton (April 24) took home the honors.

FATHER/SON-COACH/PLAYER DUOS  With freshman Kyle Serrano joining his father Dave Serrano at UT, they become the third father/ son-coach/player duo in program history.  From 2006-07, Tony Delmonico - another Farragut grad - played for his father and longtime Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico. An infielder, Tony hit .329 with 142 hits and 85 RBIs over his career. Rod Delmonico coached the Vols for 18 seasons (1990-2007), amassing 699 wins and three College World Series appearances.  The program’s longest tenured coach at 18 seasons (1963-1981), Bill Wright coached his son Barry Wright from 1979-80. A designated hitter both seasons, Barry hit .280 with five home run and 15 RBIs in 1980.

2012 - SOPHOMORE • Led the Vols with 12 starts during the 2012 campaign, in addition to making 10 other appearances out of the bullpen for a total of 22 trips to the mound.

• Posted a 3-5 record and three saves with a 4.33 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 72.2 innings of work.

• Opposing hitters hit just .264 off of him.

• Started the season as the team’s closer, earning saves against Northern Illinois (Feb. 18), Texas (March 3) and Ball State (March 7) before moving into the starting rotation.

• First win of the year came out of the bullpen vs. Seton Hall (Feb. 25), before winning games at Georgia (March 18) and vs. Vanderbilt (May 4) as the starting pitcher.

• Struck out a eight in a personal-best 8.2 innings of two-run ball to claim the victory over the Commodores.

• Allowed just one hit in 4.1 shutout innings against Kentucky on March 25, but it came off the bat of his brother, Michael.

• Struck out 18 batters and allowed just eight hits in 14.1 scoreless innings over eight relief appearances.

2011 - FRESHMAN • Took over the role of UT’s closer during his freshman year, finishing with a 2-1 record, team-high four saves and 6.48 ERA in 23 relief appearances.

• Four saves rank as the second-most by a freshman in Vol history.

• Struck out 30 batters in 33.1 innings and helped close out three of the team’s four shutouts on the year.

• Recorded saves against Milwaukee (2/19), at Alabama (4/16), MTSU (5/10) and Auburn (5/19).

• First two career wins came against Ole Miss (3/26) and in the regular-season finale against Auburn (5/21), while his lone loss was at the hands of Indiana (3/5).

HIGH SCHOOL • Graduated from Farragut High School in Knoxville where he was coached by Matt Buckner.

• Helped lead the Admirals to three consecutive state championships, going 19-0 with 137 strikeouts and an 0.85 ERA during his three seasons on the varsity squad.

• Farragut was 125-14 during that span.

• Also played first base, hitting .326 with 18 home runs and 77 RBIs during his prep career.

• Earned all-state, all-district and all-region honors in both 2009 and 2010 and was named a 2010 Honorable Mention Louisville Slugger High School All American.
