Weather Forecast Wednesday
¢ With the cancellation of the Hokie-Smokey Classic, originally scheduled for Tuesday at LewisGale Field in Salem, Va., the Vols will now host Western Carolina at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Wednesday night. ¢ Winners of four of their last six, the 29thranked Volunteers look to get back on track against the Catamounts after dropping their third SEC series of the season at Georgia over the weekend. ¢ Tennessee opened the series with a 5-3 win over the Bulldogs in front of a nation audience on ESPNU, but lost the final two contests by 4-1 and 7-4 margins, respectively. ¢ Head coach Dave Serrano and his Vols opened the season a perfect 12-0, marking the best start in 105 years of program history. ¢ At the halfway point of the SEC slate, the Vols stand 23-11 overall and 6-9 in conference play. The Big Orange has already eclipsed last season’s win total (22) and won as just as many SEC series (2) as 2013 with 20 games to go in the regular season.
¢ UT has won back-to-back meetings against Western Carolina by a combined margin of 15 runs.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
THE THIRD WEEKEND IN APRIL
¢ UT and WCU have met 26 times previously on the diamond, with the Vols holding a 19-7 all-time advantage, in a series that dates back to 1964. ¢ In 2013, the Catamounts raced out to a 5-0 lead in the season’s only meeting, but the Vols scored nine runs on nine hits with two outs in the third inning to defeat WCU, 10-5, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on March 20. ¢ The Orange and White holds a 14-3 advantage in the series in games played in Knoxville, and is 8-2 over the last 10 meetings.
