FIRST SERVE
¢ Tennessee faces its highest-ranked opponent of the 2014 season when it welcomes No. 8 Florida to Thompson-Boling Arena on Sunday. ¢ Sunday marks the 59th meeting all-time between the Lady Vols and Gators in a series that dates back to 1978. UF leads the series 44-13-1. ¢ The Gators claimed both meetings between the programs last year, taking identical 3-0 decisions in both matches. The wins snapped a three-match winning streak for UT over UF that covered the 2011 and 2012 seasons. It was Tennessee’s second-longest winning streak over UF in series history. ¢ In their most recent action, the Lady Vols fell, 3-0, at No. 18 Kentucky on Wednesday night. The loss dropped UT to 0-3 against ranked foes this season and just 1-8 on the road. ¢ Kendra Turner led the Lady Vols with 12 kills on the night, giving her five matches this season of double digit kills. It was also the sixth time this season she has paced UT in the kills column. ¢ Ashley Mariani recorded 11 kills for the second straight match at UK -- her fourth match of the year with 10 or more kills. ¢ DS/L Bridgette Villano and RS Kanisha Jimenez are each ranked inside the SEC’s top 20 in digs per set. Villano holds the No. 11 spot with a 3.26 digs per set average while Jimenez sits at No. 20, averaging 2.60 scoops per frame. ¢ Junior setter Lexi Dempsey and fresheman Iesha Bryant are currently the only Lady Vols to rank inside the SEC top 10 in any statistical category. Dempsey’s 8.16 assists per set and Bryant’s 1.02 blocks per frame are both good for 10th in the league. ¢ Tennessee posted a season-best attack percentage of .291 in its home win over Ole Miss on Oct. 26. That figure is also the second-highest for UT over the last two seasons.
ABOUT #8 FLORIDA
¢ The Gators are the only unbeaten team in SEC play and enter the match ranked eighth in the AVCA Coaches Poll. ¢ With UF’s 3-0 win over Georgia on Wednesday night, the Gators are now on a 12-match winning streak -- the 11th longest active streak in the country and the longest in the SEC. ¢ Florida has dropped only two sets through 11 conference matches (3-1 wins at LSU and South Carolina). ¢ Middle blocker Rhamat Alhassan currently ranks second in the NCAA in hitting efficiency. The true freshman owns an attack perentage of .463, converting 189 kills on 315 swings with just 43 errors. It’s also the top mark in the SEC. ¢ As a team, the Gators have posted an attack percentage of .305 -- the best figure in the SEC by 40 points and the fourth-best in the country. Conversely, UF also leads the league in opponent hitting percentage, limiting foes to an attacking clip of just .159 this season. ¢ Sophomore right side Alex Holston currently leads the team in kills at 3.49 per frame. She posted 12 kills in Athens on Wednesday night, doing her damage on a .526 attacking clip. She completed the double-double with 11 digs along the way. ¢ Florida is 6-1 on the season in true road matches, including a victory at No. 6 USC on Sept. 12. Its only blemish came in Tallahassee in a tough 3-2 loss to then No. 8 and now No. 3 Florida State.

LADY VOLS’ RECORD WHEN ... Category Overall SEC
LAST TIME OUT: #18 KENTUCKY #18 KENTUCKY 3, TENNESSEE 0 ¢ Tennessee dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 18 Kentucky on Wednesday night in Lexington. It was UT’s fifth straight loss to the Wildcats. ¢ The Lady Vols got 12 kills from Kendra Turner and 11 from Ashley Mariani, but no other UT player had more than three as Tennessee finished with just 32 kills on the night. ¢ UT held the Wildcats to an attack percentage of just .179 in the first frame, but UK responded with a .459 clip in the second set and .379 in the third to finish things out with a hitting percentage of .333.
TNVB MOVES INTO CRONAN CENTER
¢ Tennessee volleyball’s dedicated practice facility, the Joan Cronan Volleyball Center, was dedicated on Oct. 24 and UT began practicing in the new facility that week. ¢ The $3 million dollar facility features three courts, a locker room and lounge, equipment room, film study room, and coaches’ offices. It was constructed adjacent to Regal Soccer Stadium off Neyland Drive. ¢ With the opening of the Joan Cronan Volleyball center, each varsity sport at UT now has its own dedicated practice space. ¢ The facility’s namesake, Joan Cronan, was the women’s athletic director for twenty-eight years at UT and served a three-month term as vice chancellor and director of athletics when the men’s and women’s departments merged in 2011.
DEMPSEY MOVES INSIDE TOP 10
¢ Junior setter Lexi Dempsey climbed into ninth place on UT’s career assist list earlier this season when she delivered her 1,531st career assist in the third set at Mississippi State. ¢ Dempsey passes Allison Stricklin (1994-97) for ninth place and is now directly behind eighth-place Kelsey Mahoney, who handed out 1,857 helpers for UT between 2008-11. ¢ First-year assistant coach Erica Lear (1998-01) graduated as the program’s all-time leader in assists with 5,069. She now ranks second behind Julie Kny-

BAWCOMBE'S BIG WEEKEND
¢ Outside hitter Kelsey Bawcombe became the second Tennessee freshman to earn All-Tournament team honors when she earned the special recognition at UT’s DISH Lady Vol Classic. ¢ In four matches, Bawcombe tallied 35 kills, 31 digs, and 10 blocks to earn the distincition. ¢ The California native helped the Lady Vols to their first home win of the season when she delivered a career-high 17 kills and 13 digs to lift UT over Mercer in a tight 3-2 contest. ¢ The effort marked the first double-double of Bawcombe’s career. She also had four blocks on the day.
FRESHMAN FOURSOME
¢ A quartet of first year players consisting of Kelsey Bawcombe, Iesha Bryant, Kanisha Jimenez, and Kendra Turner started together in each of the final three matches of the DISH Lady Vol Classic. ¢ That foursome factored prominently into Tennessee’s attack as the quartet combined to take 75 percent of the team’s 507 attack attempts through four matches. ¢ Not surprisingly, the foursome also delivered 75 percent of the team’s kills over the weekend, led by Jimenez’s 43.

TURNING UP TURNER
¢ After seeing action in only two sets over Tennessee’s first six matches, freshman Kendra Turner has become a staple in the starting lineup for UT since early September. ¢ Turner has earned the starting nod in 14 of the last 16 matches she has appeared in, only missing action against Kentucky and LSU due to an injury. She now ranks second on the team in total kills with 147 and leads the squad in kills per set at 2.67. ¢ The true freshman found her offensive rhythm and earned a spot in the regular rotation after tallying four kills in the third set of a 3-0 loss to Omaha on Sept. 6. She earned her first start in the very next match at Evansville on Sept. 9. ¢ On Sept. 12, Turner blasted a career-high 19 kills against Kennesaw State, lifing UT to a 3-1 win. Those 19 kills are the most produced by any Lady Vol this season. ¢ Turner has had four more matches of 10 or more kills since that outburst, including a 17-kill performance against Mercer on Sept. 20.
ALL-TOURNAMENT FOR LEA
¢ Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lea earned All-Tournament recognition at the Coastal Carolina Tournament after posting 43 kills and 36 digs in three matches for UT. ¢ Lea recorded two double-doubles on the weekend, smashing 18 kills to go along with 13 digs against Kennesaw State, then notching 14 kills plus a career-
¢ The Efland, N.C., native has now earned All-Tournament team honors twice in her career.
BRYANT, VILLANO ALL-TOURNAMENT
¢ Tennessee true freshman middle blocker Iesha Bryant and sophomore defensive specialist Bridgette Villano were named to the All-Tournament team after helping Tennessee to a 2-1 mark at the the Appalachian Invitational. ¢ Bryant totalled a tournament-best 17 total blocks while also finishing with 16 total kills. ¢ She came away with five total blocks in her first collegiate match against Tennessee Tech, then followed that performance with a weekend-high of eight in a 3-1 win over Cleveland State. ¢ Meanwhile, Villano led the Lady Vols in total digs with 44, including a 16-dig performance against Tennessee Tech.

10 FOR THE ROAD
¢ For the second consecutive season, Tennessee is starting its campaign away from the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. ¢ In fact, this season the Lady Vols will play 10 consecutive contests away from home to begin the year. ¢ The 10 consecutive matches on the road mark the longest road trip in head coach Rob Patrick’s 17-year tenure, besting the previous mark of eight set in 1999 and matched in 2011. ¢ It is also the longest road swing for the program since 1996 when it started the year with 11 straight away from Knoxville.
#TNVB ON NATIONAL TV
¢ Tennessee volleyball will be highlighted on national television on six ocassions in 2014. ¢ The recently launched SEC Network will pick up four Lady Vol matches (at Mizzou, at Georgia, vs. Florida, vs. Arkansas), while ESPNU is slated to televise two more (at Kentucky, vs. South Carolina).
TENNESSEE 11th IN PRESEASON
¢ Two years removed from a trip to the NCAA Tournament, UT was picked to finish 11th in the 2014 SEC Volleyball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. ¢ In 2013, the Lady Vols saw their streak of five straight NCAA Tournament berths snapped following a 9-23 record and a 1-17 mark in SEC play. The 2013 team featured nine newcomers and featured just one returning starter in All-American libero Ellen Mullins. ¢ Florida was picked to finish first in the poll behind 12 first-place votes, while defending SEC champion Missouri was third.
CUATRO FOR COCO
¢ UT freshman defensive specialist Claudia Coco was named to four All-American teams at the conclusion of her senior high school season. ¢ Coco amassed 2,574 digs over four seasons, setting the national dig record at Chattahoochee High. ¢ In addition to being named the 2013 Georgia Defensive Player of the Year, she was also named a PrepVolleyball.com All-American, Under Armour AllAmerican Honorable Mention, Max Preps High School All-American, and to the American Family Insurance

¢ Tennessee returns five starters from its 2013 squad -- a quintet comprised of senior Shealyn Kolosky, junior Lexi Dempsey, and sophomores Raina Hembry, Jamie Lea, and Ashley Mariani. ¢ Kolosky is the lone senior on the 2014 squad and is coming off a season in which she started all 32 matches. A middle blocker standing at 6-3, Kolosky was sidelined with an injury for much of her sophomore campaign. But the Wheaton, Ill., native stormed back to set a career-high in kills last season with 202. She also ranked among the team leaders in total blocks, turning in 65 with five solo. ¢ A transfer from the University of Portland, Dempsey burst on to the scene in her first season with Tennessee. The setter finished the year with 16 total double-doubles -- a figure that was the thirdbest in the SEC. Those double-doubles often came in bunches as she strung together streaks two or more double-dips on four separate occasions in 2013. Her best run came in early September when she recorded three in a row against Chattanooga, UNC-Asheville, and UT-Martin. In all, Dempsey saw starts in 31 of 32 matches for the Lady Vols, finishing the season with 976 total assists (8.64/set). She also fired in 19 service aces, the second-best mark on the team. ¢ One of three true freshmen thrust into a starting role in 2013, Hembry proved to be a defensive force at the net. The 6-3 middle blocker posted a team-high 72 total blocks during her opening act at UT. The Portland, Ore., native also finished the year with 147 kills (good for 1.67 per set) and swung at a .171 clip -- the second highest percentage on the team for players with more than 100 attacks. ¢ An outside hitter from Efland, N.C., Lea also wasted little time in making her mark in Knoxville. In her first collegiate action, the 6-2 outside hitter flirted with a triple-double after tallying 10 kills, eight digs, and five blocks. Lea would go on to lead the Lady Vols in kills per set with 2.99 after hammering 281 kills with an attack percentage of .143. Lea was voted a team captain before the season alongside senior Kolosky and junior Megan Hatcher. ¢ Mariani started all 32 matches of her freshman campaign -- the only Lady Vol freshman to do so. With 292 total kills, the 6-1 native of Arlington, Texas, paced the Lady Vols on the attack. She recorded 13 matches of double digit kills while also compiling 121 digs and 44 total blocks on the season.
OTHER RETURNERS ¢ Three more letterwinners also return for Tennessee in 2014, consisting of junior Megan Hatcher and sophomores Kayleigh Moody and Bridgette Villano. ¢ A Knoxville native, Hatcher has earned a captain’s role on the 2014 Lady Vols. The 5-5 defensive specialist saw action in 32 matches for UT last season af2014 TENNESSEE VOLLEYBALL » UTSPORTS.COM » @LADYVOL_VBALL
ter appearing in only six as a true freshman. Hatcher scooped up 162 digs in 100 sets of action. ¢ Moody, a walk-on, appeared in two sets for Tennessee last season. ¢ A native of Davie, Fla., Villano arrived on UT campus as one of PrepVolleyball.com’s top-250 recruits. She saw plenty of action during her true freshman season, logging 80 sets played over 29 matches. She finished the year with 162 digs and a .936 reception percentage. ¢ After sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, Tennessee native Kalyn Helton will make her Orange & White debut this fall. Helton played at Lee University as a sophomore, helping guide the Flames to a 30-11 record and a 13-1 mark in conference play. She spent her freshman year at Harding University where she was named Conference Freshman of the Year.
WHO’S NEW? ¢ Besides Helton, seven other newcomers join the fold in 2014, including a class of six true freshmen. ¢ Freshman Claudia Coco joined Tennessee in the spring after a stellar prep career in which she racked up 2,754 digs to set the national dig record for a high school career. She was the 2013 Georgia Defensive Player of the Year and earned four All-American accolades. She was recognized as a PrepVolleyball. com High School All-American, Under Armour AllAmerican Honorable Mention, Max Preps High School All-American, and to the American Family Insurance All-USA Volleyball Team. ¢ Texas native Iesha Bryant is a 6-1 middle blocker that joins the Lady Vols following a 2013 District 203A Overall MVP award following her senior season at Carthage HS. Bryant closed out her senior campaign with 481 kills and 103 blocks. She was also a standout in both basketball and track & field. ¢ From California comes Kelsey Bawcombe, a libero turned outside hitter with a wealth of experience at the highest level of club competition. Twice she competed at the Junior Olympics with the 951 Elite Club Volleyball team, earning both a bronze medal and a fifth-place finish. As a senior at Temecula Valley HS, Bawcombe was named to the Southwestern League First Team. ¢ Kanisha Jimenez arrives in Knoxville with a wealth of international experience. The Bayamón, Puerto Rico, native has competed for her country’s junior and national teams, earning a bronze medal at the Norcerca Continental Championships in 2013. She represented Puerto Rico at the U-20 World Cup last summer and made her national team debut the following fall at the Grand Prix of the International Volleyball Federation. ¢ Kendra Turner joined the fold in early June following the completion of her high school career at Riverside Academy in Reserve, La. While there, Turner earned New Orleans Area All-District Volleyball Team and NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune All-New Orleans Area Volleyball Team honors under the direction of cousin and high school head coach Chelsey Nicholas. ¢ Rounding out the freshman class is Corona, Calif., native Sabrina Tavakoli. A four-year letterwinnner and two-time captain at Centennial HS, Tavakoli was named All-League during each of her high school seasons. including first team recognition after her junior and senior years. She spent the high school offseason training with the Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club. ¢ Taylor Johnson will also be making her Orange & White debut this season after starting off her collegiate career at Long Beach State. The California-born setter saw action in seven sets over four matches for the 49ers last season after completing a high school career that featured two first team All-League and All-Valley selections. Johnson also excelled on the beach, winning a gold medal at the 2011 AAU/USA Volleyball L.A. Open..
