LOOKING BACK
¢ The Big Orange produced five event wins, including four on the final day, at last season’s UK Invitational. Redshirt freshman Matthew Hoty and Lady Vol senior Annie Alexander led UT to an impressive sweep of shot put titles at the meet. ¢ In his first collegiate meet, Hoty took down a 44-year old Tennessee freshman record with a toss of 58 feet, 7 1/2-inches. The now-sophomore went on to shatter that record back at Nutter Field House with a third-place throw of 62-3 1/4 at the 2012 SEC Indoor Championships. That mark has the Sandusky, Ohio, native ranked ninth in the nation in the event entering the 2013 slate. ¢ Senior Nijgia Snapp and junior Chase Brannon will also look to repeat as champions in their respective events. Snapp – a three-time indoor AllAmerican – cruised to the 800-meter title with a readout of 2:08.55 and went on to best that time at Nutter Field House with a fifth-place finish in the event at last season’s SEC Championships. The Mays Landing, N.J., native will also compete in the 4x400m relay and the 4,000m distance medley relay. ¢ Brannon sailed over the bar at a then-careerhigh height of 17-7 1/2 to win the pole vault. The Brentwood, Tenn., native upped that mark with a leap of 17-8 1/4 at the Virginia Tech Qualifier and went on to place 16th at the NCAA Indoor Championships and earn All-American status. Brannon enters the indoor campaign as the 10th-best men’s pole vaulter in the NCAA based on last season’s marks. ¢ Former Vol Desmond Brown also added a win for UT at last season’s UK Invitational, jumping to an opening-day victory in the men’s long jump with a leap of 24-4 1/4.
