TO NOTE... HITTING THE SEC TRAIL

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

This weekend, the Lady Vols begin a four-match Southeastern Conference road trip, beginning with a match against South Carolina on Friday. Tennessee has won five straight meetings over the Gamecocks, including six of the last seven, dating back to Nov. of 2007. Friday will also mark the conference home opener for South Carolina. The Orange and White will then travel to Gainesville for a nationally televised match on ESPNU against the Gators on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Last weekend, the Lady Vols opened their conference slate with a bang, sweeping both Georgia and Auburn at home. The victory over Georgia on Friday also gave UT head coach his 300th career win, all of which have come at the Tennessee. Sophomore Kelsey Robinson recorded 30 kills, 20 digs and three aces against the league foes, including notching her seventh double-double of the year against Auburn. She also blasted 20 kills against Georgia, which ranks second in UT history for the number of kills in a three-set match. Freshman Shealyn Kolosky provided the Lady Vols with a strong presence at the net both offensively and defensively. Kolosky recorded seven kills and hit .500 or higher in both matches this weekend in addition to a team-best four blocks versus Auburn.

A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS South Carolina enters Friday’s match against UT with an identical overall record (9-2), but has only played one SEC opponent in Mississippi State. In that match, USC fell short, losing in five sets (16-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23, 8-15). Wise’s Gators have long been a national power, as Florida has captured at least a share of 19 of the last 20 SEC titles. This season, Florida opened SEC play with a 3-0 sweep over MSU.

FIRST HONOR Mary Pollmiller was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 12 following her setting performance in Blacksburg, Va. She is one of just two freshmen currently in the SEC top 10 in assists per set, joining LSU’s Malorie Pardo. Pollmiller ranks second with 11.51, while Pardo is first with 11.65.

AWARDS KEEP ROLLING Robinson has been a force against the opposition through 11 matches this season. She has earned MVP honors at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Virginia Tech Invite, along with being named to the all-tournament team at the Illinois State Farm Classic. The Southeastern Conference recognized her performance at the Illinois State Farm Classic, naming her SEC Player of the Week on Sept. 5.

THE SEC (HISTORICALLY SPEAKING) Tennessee has won at least 15 SEC matches each of the last three seasons leading up to 2011, finishing with 15 in 2008 and 2010 and 16 in 2009. Patrick is 146-90 in his career in the SEC. In 12 of his 14 seasons, he led the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record against the conference. In 2004, Tennessee roared through the conference with a 15-1 record, tying for first in the SEC and winning the SEC Tournament a week later.
