AT FIRST GLANCE

¢ Sophomore Will Maddox has gotten off to a quick start at the plate this season, hitting safely in all but one game this year, including at least two hits in nine of the team’s 11 games. For the year, he leads the squad with a .420 batting average, nine RBIs and nine runs scored. ¢ The Gainesville, Ga., native has now notched multi-hit contests in each of his last six games, including three-hit efforts against ETSU and Virginia Tech last week. ¢ During his current six-game hitting streak, the Maddox is hitting at a scalding .520 clip (13-for-25) with seven RBIs and five runs scored. ¢ Making his efforts even more impressive is the fact that most of his damage has come with two outs on the scoreboard. When put in that situation, Maddox is hitting .588 (10-for-17) this season. All nine of his RBIs this year have come with two outs as well.

RECORD-BREAKING NUMBER OF ROOKIES

¢ With 18 freshmen on this year’s roster, Tennessee set the school record for the highest percentage of true freshmen on an Opening Day roster when it hit the field last Friday in Las Vegas. True freshmen make up 56.25 percent of this year’s roster, with 18 of 32 players. That breaks the previous record of 53.66 percent previously set in 1989. ¢ Most True Freshmen (Pct.), UT History Year Fr. AND THEY PLAY TOO...

¢ To this point in the season, Tennessee played a total of 14 true freshmen, tying Iona for the most of any school in the nation. ¢ 2013 NCAA Most True Freshmen Played 14 Tennessee 11 Florida 14 Iona 11 Northern Illinois 12 Florida A&M 11 Purdue 12 Radford 11 St. John’s 12 Cincinnati 11 Virginia 11 Clemson ¢ The Vols set the school record for most true freshmen in an Opening Day starting lineup as well. With five in the lineup against UNLV on Feb. 15, the Vols topped the previous mark of four set during the 1989 campaign when true freshmen Mike Basse, Jason Imperial, Shawn McDonnell and Lar Gilligan earned starting nods in the first game. ¢ Freshman Andrew Lee also accomplished a rare feat on Opening Day, becoming the first true freshman since 1990 to hit in the cleanup slot for the Vols on the first day of a new season. The last UT player to do so was Doug Hecker against ETSU on Feb. 21, 1990.
