NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS Despite three quality pitching performances, the Tennessee baseball team couldn't quite break through offensively as it dropped three hard-fought contests to No. 3 South Carolina last week. The Volunteer pitching staff held the Gamecocks to just eight runs and a .232 batting average, but managed just one run itself over the course of the three-game set. Tennessee hosted the inaugural ESPNU Thursday Night SEC Game of the Week on April 7, welcoming 3,435 fans to Lindsey Nelson Stadium, the largest home crowd in the Todd Raleigh era. The last time the Vols hosted a crowd of that size was against Arkansas on March 30, 2007 (3,987). For the weekend, a total of 7,749 fans made their way through the turnstiles, setting a season-high for a three-game series. In the nationally-televised Thursday night contest, junior Zach Osborne was a career-best 4-for-4 at the plate for the Big Orange, while senior Tyler Horne added two hits as well in the 4-0 loss. On Friday, junior Steven Gruver allowed just two runs in eight strong innings on the mound, but the offense was unable to get going once again as the Vols dropped a 2-0 decision. The Orange and White finally got on the scoreboard in the first inning of Saturday afternoon's contest, but South Carolina scored a pair of runs in the sixth to claim the series finale, 2-1. The series against SC pitted the top two defensive teams in the SEC against each other, as UT and the Gamecocks are currently tied for the league lead with a .980 fielding percentage. Tennessee will look to return to the win column on Tuesday when it closes out a five-game homestand against Appalachian State at 7 p.m. From there, the Vols will take part in their second consecutive ESPNU Thursday Night SEC Game of the Week when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to kick off a three-game series against No. 19 Alabama at 7:30 p.m. on April 14. The two teams will go to battle again at the same time on Friday before closing out the series at 6 p.m. on Saturday. SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS Appalachian State enters Tuesday night's contest with an 18-15 overall record, including wins in 10 of its last 15 games. The Mountaineers are coming off their second straight Southern Conference series victory, having taken two game from Furman on the road last weekend. Freshman Lawrence Pardo will take the mound for the Mountaineers on Tuesday, looking to add a second victory over a college-baseball blue blood to his resume. On Feb. 25, the southpaw held No. 20 Miami (Fla.) without an earned run over six innings to earn his first career victory. The Miami, Fla., native is 1-3 with a 6.32 ERA in seven starts this season. In 31.1 innings of work, he has recorded 21 strikeouts and 19 walks while yielding 34 hits, 14 of which have gone for extra bases. Opponents are hitting .281 off the lefty whose father, Larry Pardo, is currently a scout for the Houston Astros and previously signed Ryan Braun for the Milwaukee Brewers.
