TEAM NOTES AND STORYLINES uTennessee set a new school-record for total attendance in a home-opening series, drawing 6,111 fans (2,037/game) to the three-game set against Milwaukee, Feb. 18-20. The previous record was set in 1997 when the Vols drew 5,877 over three games against Eastern Kentucky. With 2,345 on hand on the first day of the 2011 season, UT had its second-highest attendance for a home-opening contest, behind only the 2.753 that saw the Vols take on Louisville on Feb. 25, 1995. uWith a 4-0 win over Milwaukee on Feb. 18, Tennessee improved to 67-33-2 all-time in season openers, including a 4-0 mark under head coach Todd Raleigh. The Vols defeated Xavier, 16-6, on Feb. 19 last season. uThe Vols return three-fourths of their starting infield, which played a large role in helping the team finish 24th in the nation at .974 in 2010. The only addition, first baseman Josh Liles, should improve the overall athleticism of the infield as well. Tennessee recorded only one error in the opening weekend of play and that came from a pitcher on a failed pick-off attempt. INDIVIDUAL NOTES AND STORYLINES uSenior Khayyan Norfork got the season started in style, hitting a team-best .556 (5-for-9) with the squad's only triple and home run. He also knocked in four runs, slugged at a 1.222 clip, got on base 66.7 percent of the time and stole a base. uUT Opening Day starter junior Steven Gruver set the tone for the Vol pitching staff, tossing six shutout innings and striking out eigth while leading the Big Orange to a 4-0 win and its first shutout since 2007. UT's last shutout came on March 10, 2007, a span of three years, 11 months and eight days (209 games). uThe Vols have two players trying their hands at a new position this season in senior Josh Liles and junior Matt Ramsey. Liles will move from centerfield to first base, while Ramsey will spend time catching after playing the outfield and designated hitter last season. Ramsey will also serve as the team's closer. uFreshman Andrew Toles will look to make an immediate impact as Tennessee's starting centerfielder. The speedy rookie was drafted in the fourth round last June by the Florida Marlins. He is the son of former Vol linebacker Alvin Toles and the nephew of former UT running back Johnnie Jones. THIS WEEKEND'S PROMOTIONS Friday: $1 Hot Dogs Saturday: Show basketball ticket and receive free admission Sunday: Kids 17 & under get in free and can run the bases and get autographs postgame
