NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS The Tennessee baseball team dropped to 22-20 overall and 5-16 in SEC play after suffering a trio of setbacks at No. 3 Vanderbilt in Nashville last weekend. Although the Vols were able to generate a respectable 41 baserunners against the talented Commodore pitching staff, they had trouble coming up with the big hit needed to bring them around the basepaths, finishing just 2-for-48 at the plate with runners on base, including a 1-for-20 mark with runners in scoring position. Over the course of the three games, the Big Orange had its leadoff hitter reach base 16 times in 27 total innings, but just three of those runners were able to score. A bright spot for Tennessee was the play of a trio of underclassmen in freshmen Ethan Bennett and Andrew Toles and sophomore Drew Steckenrider. Those three players combined for 13 of the team's 19 hits on the weekend, including five from Bennett and four each from Toles and Steckenrider. SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS The Bulldogs dropped a pair of 5-4 contests in a rare Saturday twinbill at home to Alabama last weekend but claimed the Sunday finale 8-5 to stay within two games of first place in the SEC Western Division race. The three-game series had a running time of nine hours and 24 minutes played over a 27-hour span. State out-hit the Tide .327 to .291 and slugged five home runs on the weekend, two by senior outfielder Jaron Shepherd. Shepherd (.290) paced State at the plate going 5-for-8 (.625) with one double and his first two home runs of the year. Junior relief pitcher Caleb Reed (0-1, 1.00) absorbed his first loss of the season and saw his impressive run of consecutive scoreless innings pitched halted at 17.1 innings. It was the only run allowed by Reed in three weekend relief appearances (2.2 innings), the last earning him his team-leading eighth save. Senior third baseman Jarrod Parks (.406) collected four hits on the weekend, maintaining his SEC-leading batting average and extending his current hitting streak to 16 games, the longest by a Bulldog since 2007 (Brandon Turner).
