NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS In the first week of the second half of its SEC schedule, Tennessee opened with a dramatic, walk-off 10-inning win on Friday before dropping a pair of two-run games and the series to the visiting Georgia Bulldogs. UT’s record now stands at 22-17, including a 5-13 mark in league play. Junior Steven Gruver put the Vols in position to win on Friday with yet another quality start, allowing just three earned runs in 7.1 innings. He scattered eight hits, struck out seven and walked just one. The 6-1 southpaw didn’t get the win as the game went to extra-innings, but senior Matt Duffy made sure the Big Orange came away victorious, following an intentional walk to Khayyan Norfork that loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th with a shot high off the right-field wall for a walk-off single that gave UT a 5-4 triumph. Tennessee kept the next two games in the series close, but a total of eight two-out runs, including six on Saturday alone, proved too much to overcome as the Vols dropped 8-6 and 5-3 decisions. Senior designated hitter Tyler Horne was UT’s most consistent offensive performer last week against Georgia, hitting at a squadbest .364 clip with four singles in 11 at-bats. He also scored two runs and knocked in another. Horne is currently in the midst of a career-long seven-game hitting streak, during which he is 10-for-23 (.435) and has raised his overall batting average 45 points, going from .250 to .295. SCOUTING THE BLUE RAIDERS Middle Tennessee State will head to Knoxville with a 15-26 overall record after taking two of three from UL-Monroe last weekend. The Blue Raiders will send junior right-hander Matt Drake to the mound against the Vols. It will be just his second start of the season and sixth appearance of the year. He currently sports a 1-1 record and 1.74 ERA with four strikeouts and a walk in 10.1 innings pitched. He picked up a rain-shortened complete game last week, shutting out Memphis, 4-0, in five innings at FedEx Park. Tennessee is 31-17 all-time against MTSU, including four consecutive wins and victories in 18 of the last 20 matchups between the two squads. In Knoxville, the Big Orange is 14-9 against the Blue Raiders. SCOUTING THE golden eagles Tennessee Tech will welcome the Volunteers to the Averitt Express Baseball Complex in Cookeville on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles are 17-21 on the year, including an 11-11 mark at home. Junior outfielder Casanova Donaldson has been the team's top offensive performer, hitting .336 this season with three home runs and eight RBIs. Dual-threat senior Chad Oberacker has a team-high eight home runs and 37 RBIs at the plate, as well as a 1-2 record and 4.71 ERA in 10 appearances on the mound. Tennessee holds a 66-28-1 advantage all-time over the Golden Eagles, including a 9-3 victory in Knoxville last season. In Cookeville, the Vols are 23-15-1, but lost 9-7 in their last visit on April 1, 2008.
