NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS The Tennessee baseball returns home to Rocky Top with a 19-9 overall record and 2-7 mark in SEC play after dropping a three-game set on the road to No. 3 Florida. The Volunteers opened the week with a 14-6 victory over UNC Asheville, in which the first four hitters in the UT lineup combined for nine hits, eight runs, six walks and nine RBIs. In the series opener against the Gators, senior Rob Catapano earned his first Friday night starting assignment, holding third-ranked UF to just two runs over a career-high 6.2 innings of work. On Saturday, junior Steven Gruver posted another solid performance, going 5.1 frames, yielding three earned runs. The Vols made another change to the starting rotation on Sunday, sending junior Matt Ramsey to the mound to make his first collegiate start. Normally the team’s fireballing closer, Ramsey struck out one, walked three and gave up one run on a hit in two innings. The Orange and White returns to Knoxville to start a five-game homestand. The Vols will first take on Presbyterian at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Redshirt freshman Jon Reed will get the starting assignment for the Big Orange. It will mark his seventh start of the season. In his first six starts, the Tulsa, Okla., native has a 1-0 record with a 4.91 ERA. Reed has tossed 22.0 total innings, striking out eight and walking 10. Following Tuesday's contest, No. 4 South Carolina will then travel to Lindsey Nelson Stadium to help Tennessee kick off the ESPN Thursday Night Game of the Week series at 7:30 p.m. two days later. The Vols and Gamecocks will also play at 6 p.m. on Friday and noon on Sunday, with the series finale set to be televised live on SportSouth. SCOUTING THE BLUE HOSE Presbyterian College makes the trek to Rocky Top with a 17-11 overall record, including a 4-2 road victory over Clemson earlier this year. The Blue Hose are led by freshman 1B/C Brad Zebedis who is hitting a stellar .438 with eight home runs in 29 RBIs. Not far behind him in the power categories is junior catcher Tony Micklon with seven longballs and 27 RBIs. Those two hitters have combined for 15 of the team's 21 homers this year. On Tuesday, the Blue Hose will send junior southpaw Steven Richardson to the mound. He is currently 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 11 appearances, including five starts. In 36.0 innings of work, he has struck out 18 and walked 13. Opponents are hitting .295 off of him. Aptly named Chandler Knox, a freshman from Columbia, S.C., has served as the team's closer. In 14 appearances, he has posted a 3-1 record, 3.55 ERA and four saves.
