NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS The Tennessee baseball team will close out the 2011 campaign this week with a four-game homestand. The Volunteers will open with a Tuesday night tilt against Belmont at 7 p.m. before welcoming Auburn to Lindsey Nelson Stadium for a three-game set, Thursday through Saturday. The first two games are set to start at 6 p.m. and first pitch for the series finale will be at 2 p.m. Prior to Saturday’s contest, the Big Orange will honor its five seniors – Rob Catapano, Matt Duffy, Tyler Horne, Josh Liles and Khayyan Norfork. Tennessee was 1-4 last week, splitting a home-and-home midweek series with Middle Tennessee State before dropping a trio of contests at LSU in Baton Rouge. Junior Charley Thurber returned to the lineup after missing 14 games with a wrist injury and immediately made his presence known, hitting safely in all three games of UT’s series at LSU. The Elmira, N.Y., native was 5-for-10 (.500) on the weekend with a double, three RBIs and three stolen bases. After going 1-for-3 in the series opener, Thurber recorded a pair of hits in the second game against the Tigers with a single to center and a double high off the wall in right. He also stole his second base of the season. The 6-4 outfielder was even more impressive on Sunday, collecting two more hits, driving in three runs and swiping a career-best two bags. In the series finale against the Tigers, Liles played in his 184th collegiate contest, placing him in a tie with Stevie Daniel (1999-2001) for the 10th most in Tennessee history. Freshman Andrew Toles stole his 20th base of the season in that same game, tying him with Lar Gilligan (1989) for the third-most ever by a UT rookie. SCOUTING THE BRUINS Belmont enters its Tuesday night tilt at Tennessee with a 29-23 overall record after dropping two of the three contests at home to Florida Gulf Coast last weekend. The Bruins staved off a sweep with a 4-3 victory on Sunday. They are an even 10-10 on the road this season. Senior Nate Woods has been impressive in pulling double duty for Belmont this season. At the plate, he leads the squad with a .358 batting average and ranks second with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs. He also has a teamhigh 17 doubles and has swiped eight bases. Woods will get the start on the mound against the Vols on Tuesday night as well. As a pitcher, the 6-6 righthander is 4-5 with a 7.60 ERA in 11 appearances, including 10 starts. Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he has struck out 22 and walked 16 in 45.0 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .313 off of him. Backing him offensively will be a trio of long-ball threats in seniors Derek Hamblen and Tim Egerton and freshman Greg Brody. A 6-0 infielder, Brody is hitting .322 with seven home runs and 35 RBIs. Egerton, a transfer outfielder from Columbia State CC, tops the team with 12 bombs and 51 RBIs, while Hamblen, a Plano, Texas, native, is hitting .311 with nine four-baggers, 30 RBIs and a squad-best 22 stolen bases in 25 attempts.
