NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS After hosting the inaugural ESPNU Thursday Night SEC Game of the Week against South Carolina on April 7 with a season-high 3,434 on hand at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, Tennessee will take part in the event once again this Thursday in Tuscaloosa. The nationally-televised contest will open a three-game series between the Vols and 24th-ranked Alabama.

Tennessee will be looking to get back into the win column for the first time this month as it has dropped eight straight, including a 6-5 setback to Appalachian State on Tuesday night. The loss was UT's first of the season when collecting more hits than its opponent and is now 14-1 in such contests after out-hitting the Mountaineers, 8-7.

Despite three quality pitching performances last weekend, the Vols never could quite break through offensively as they dropped three hard-fought contests to No. 3 South Carolina. The Orange and White pitching staff held the Gamecocks to just eight runs and a .232 batting average, but managed just one run itself over the course of the three-game set.

In the nationally-televised Thursday night contest, junior Zach Osborne was a career-best 4-for-4 at the plate for the Big Orange, while senior Tyler Horne added two hits as well in the 4-0 loss. On Friday, junior Steven Gruver allowed just two runs in eight strong innings on the mound, but the offense was unable to get going once again as the Vols dropped a 2-0 decision.

The Orange and White finally got on the scoreboard in the first inning of Saturday afternoon’s contest, but South Carolina scored a pair of runs in the sixth to claim the series finale, 2-1. SCOUTING THE CRIMSON TIDE SEC Western Division leader Alabama is currently ranked No. 24 in the Baseball America poll with a record of 22-13, including a 7-5 mark in league play. The Crimson Tide, which closes out a two-game set against Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday, was swept at No. 1 Vanderbilt last weekend, but did manage nine runs off the Commodore pitching staff.

Alabama will send senior right-hander Nathan Kilcrease (4-2, 2.63) to the mound on Thursday night, junior southpaw Adam Morgan (4-2, 4.34) on Friday and sophomore righty Trey Pilkington (1-2, 3.41) on Saturday.

Junior centerfielder Taylor Dugas has paced the team's offensive effort, hitting .357 on the year with four of the team's 11 home runs.

MEDIA INFORMATION Media Credentials Media credentials will be issued to members of the working media only. Children and other non-workers will not be allowed. Requests for credentials should be made by calling Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron Harris at least one day in advance of each home game or series. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations Office will be left at the ticket will call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Interview Policy Players and coaches are available for interviews during weekly media opportunities or by appointment arranged through Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron Harris.

Interviews with coaches or players while the team is on the road also should be arranged through Cameron Harris.

Postgame Interviews Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is available to meet any working member of the media following the game on the field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Media are asked to conduct player interviews on the field, and media members are not permitted in the clubhouse area.

Interviews with visiting team members also may be done on the field, subject to the policy of the visiting team’s media relations representative.

Photographers Media credentials are required for all photographers and television media. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations office will be left at the ticket will-call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Photo decks are located atop the stairwells behind the first- and third-baselines. There are also photo field-level photo wells at the far end of each dugout. Both still and television photographers are welcome to shoot from these spots. Television crews are welcome to film from the mezzanine level underneath the press box.

Photographers will not be permitted in or between the dugouts.

The Press Box The Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box is for working members of the media only. The press box is located atop the grandstand behind home plate and includes space for working members of the press, official and visiting scorers, public address announcer and scoreboard operator.

Also located on the press level are two radio booths and a television/VIP booth. Admission to the press box is by credential only.

Press Box Services Updated cumulative statistics, game notes and scorecards, along with team rosters, will be available in the press box at each home game. A final box score will be compiled and distributed at the completion of each game.

An official scorer is assigned to all home games, and Cameron Harris will keep the media informed of all scoring decisions, notable facts and records.

Telephones The Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box is equipped with two telephones for use by the media only. Each radio booth is equipped with two courtesy phone lines and an ISDN line, use of which will be granted on a reciprocal basis. Visiting radio crews needing assistance should contact Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron Harris at (865) 974-8876.

Internet High-speed wireless Internet is available in the Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box, including both radio booths and the television booth. There also are a limited number of DSL connections available for use by the media in the press box (but not in the radio booths), and phone lines for dial-up access are available as well. Fourth Season Western Carolina, 1991 Record at UT: 102-98 (.510) Career Record: 359-307 (.539) Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is in his fourth season at Rocky Top after guiding his alma mater, Western Carolina, for eight seasons.

While at UT, Raleigh has had 12 players drafted, including two in 2008 and five more in both 2009 and 2010, and two more sign free-agent contracts following the completion of their eligibility. Nine of those players were drafted in the top-20 rounds, highlighted by 2009 first-round selection Kentrail Davis. In 19 seasons as a collegiate coach, Raleigh has now produced a total of 45 MLB draft picks and 63 professional players.

Under Raleigh's guidance, the Vols have steadily moved up in the NCAA RPI in each of the last three seasons, improving from 91 in 2008 to 58 in 2009 and 45 in 2010. Over the past two seasons, Raleigh’s squads have belted out 168 round-trippers (87 in 2009, 81 in 2010), good for the second-most prolific two-year period in school history.

During his tenure in Cullowhee, Raleigh’s clubs won two regular-season Southern Conference championships, one Southern Conference tournament title, turned in five top-three league finishes and made a pair of NCAA Regional appearances—reaching the Regional final both times.

His 2007 WCU team posted a winning record against teams in the top 35 of the RPI and earned a rare mid-major at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Catamounts were touted by ESPN’s Kyle Peterson as featuring an “SEC-style offense.”

In his 19 seasons as a collegiate assistant or head coach, Raleigh’s teams have finished third or better in their respective league 12 times (63 percent).

Raleigh and his wife, Stephanie, have four children: Caleb John “Cal” (13), Emma Grace (11), Carley Elizabeth (4) and Todd Anthony “T” (1).

“We have been working on a lot of small ball stuff. We don't have as many power guys, so we have to get back to the basics. A lot of bunting, base running and just small ball stuff. It's not a traditional team like we have had in the past but we are getting use to it. Top to bottom, it's just a group of scrappy guys. We are going to score runs in many different ways and put pressure on the other team to make mistakes."

The chemisty on this team is definitely improved over what it has been in the last couple of years. We have a close-knit group and a group of seniors to lead us. NOTEWORTHY TEAM QUICK HITS uUT currently sports the second-best fielding percentage in the SEC at .975 with just 31 errors in the first 33 games of the season. uTennessee hosted the first ESPNU Thursday Night SEC Game of the Week when South Carolina made the trek to Rocky Top on April 7. The Vols will also play in the second such game at Alabama on April 14. uAfter starting the season on a roll at the plate, the Vols have hit a rough patch offensively lately.

The team batting average topped out at .342 15 games into the year, but has since dropped to .292 as the Big Orange is hitting just .216 in SEC games. uThe Vols have hit six home runs on the first pitch of an at-bat this season. uSeven different UT pitchers have combined to record a total of 10 saves this year, after the entire team had just four in 2010. uTennessee pinch hitters are 9-for-27 (.333). uUT has 68 two-out RBIs on the year, while holding its opponents to just 51.

uTennessee has struck out just 173 times this season, the second-fewest of any team in the SEC. uUT's five-game run without an error from 3/254/1 was its longest since posting five straight errorless contests from 5/9-5/16 in the 1993 campaign. uThe Big Orange ranks seventh in the nation with 67 stolen bases in 84 attempts. uThe contest with Austin Peay on March 16 marked the Orange and White's first road game of the year, as Tennessee opened the 2011 season with 16 straight home games. That is the longest homestand for the Vols since they played 22 consecutive games in Knoxville to open the 1963 campaign.

INDIVIDUAL QUICK HITS uSenior Josh Liles needs 19 more hits to become the 15th member of Tennessee's 200-hits club. uWith 16 stolen bases, Andrew Toles has the second-most thefts of any freshman in the nation this year, behind only Iona's Joe Torres who has 18. uJunior Zach Osborne ranks second in school history with 19 career sacrifice bunts. He needs just three more to tie Bryce Christensen (94-95) for the all-time lead. uOver his last nine games, Osborne has been on fire at the plate, hitting .444 (16-for-36) with at least two hits in seven of those contests. uOn the other end of the spectrum, UT senior Matt Duffy has hit a rough patch as he is hitless in his last 16 at-bats, dating back to April 3 at Florida. uWith three saves this season, junior Matt Ramsey has increased his career total to nine, placing him in a tie with Rich DeLucia (83-86) for the fifth-most in the UT annals. Todd Helton holds the school record with 23.

Senior third baseman Matt Duffy posted one of the most memorable offensive performances in Tennessee history against New Orleans on March 9, 2011, becoming just the second UT player to ever hit for the cycle.

Duffy finished the contest 4-for-6 at the plate with a career-high three runs scored and four RBIs. He had a double in the first inning, a triple in the fourth, his second home run of the season in the fifth and a single in the eighth.

uWhen Ramsey took the mound at the start of UT's contest against South Carolina on April 9, it marked his 56th career appearance, tying him with Brandon Crowe (00-04), Jeff Owen (83, 85-87) and Rich DeLucia (83-86) for the 10th most all-time in Tennessee history. uUT senior Tyler Horne is hitting .571 (4-for-7) in two career games against Alabama. Fellow classmate Josh Liles has two home runs against the Tide in nine career contests. uAlthough he is 0-1 against Alabama in two relielf appearances, junior Matt Ramsey has struck out nine Tide hitters in just seven innings of work. uIn two career appearances against Alabama, including one start, Steven Gruver has a 1.69 ERA. He has five strikeouts and has allowed just one run in 5.1 innings.

SIX VOLS ON MLB OPENING DAY ROSTERS A total of six former Vols were on the Opening Day roster of an MLB team, not including members of two coaching staffs.

Luke Hochevar became just the third UT player to ever earn the honor of being his team's Opening Day starting pitcher, doing so for this year's Kansas City Royals. The only other two Vols to do so are Tommy Bridges with the Detroit Tigers (1933, 1939 and 1943) and Tommy Smithson with the Texas Rangers (1983).

In his first full season in the bigs is Toronto Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia. Chase Headley enters his fifth year with the San Diego Padres while Julio Borbon begins his third year with the Texas Rangers.

A nine-year MLB veteran, R.A. Dickey is in his second year with the New York Mets, while Todd Helton

is the longest-tenured former Vol as he begins his 15th season in a Colorado Rockies uniform.

THE TALENTED MR. NORFORK (FROM RIPLEY) One of the premier hitters in the nation so far this season, UT senior second baseman Khayyan Norfork has hit safely in 27 of the first 33 games of the 2011 campaign and leads the team with 16 multiple-hit contests. The Ripley, Tenn., native is also tied for fifth in the nation and leads the SEC with 21 stolen bases.

So far this year, he has struck out 53 and walked just 11 in 55.1 innings of work, averaging nearly seven innings per start. He went six scoreless against Milwaukee on Opening Day before shutting down Canisius for seven frames on Feb. 26 when he posted a career-high 10 strikeouts. He has now pitched 6.0+ innings 10 times in his career, including seven of his eight starts this season.

DUFFY LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACK A transfer from Vermont, UT senior third baseman Matt Duffy has been one of the team's most consistent players this season, starting all 33 games and hitting .336 in the middle of the lineup. He has struggled of late though, as he is hitless in his last 16 at-bats. Regardlesss, the Milton, Mass., native has the sixth-most RBIs of any player in the SEC with 30, holds the team lead with five home runs and ranks fifth in the league in on-base percentage (.476) and ninth in slugging percentage (.558). He also ranks second in the SEC with 10 HBPs. After a slow start in 2010, his first at Tennessee, Duffy picked up the pace at the end of the year, leading the Big Orange with a .348 batting average in SEC play.

CATAPANO = WINNER Including his two seasons at North Carolina, Tennessee senior and Knoxville native Rob Catapano has started 17 collegiate games. The team he has started for has won 15 of those contests with his only two losses coming earlier this year at No. 3 Florida on April 1 and at home against defending national champion South Carolina on April 7.

CATAPANO HAS SIGHTS SET ON MARINES Unless the option to continue his baseball career presents itself, Catapano plans on entering Officer Candidates School, a 10-week program in Quantico, Va., designed to train, evaluate and screen candidates for potential as Marine Corp officers.

Graduates of OCC are commissioned immediately upon graduation as Second Lieutenants and sent to The Basic School at Quantico for six months of further training.

RAMSEY ON JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST In his first season as the starting catcher at Tennessee, junior Matt Ramsey has solidified himself as one of the top catch-and-throw backstops in the country, gunning down 13 of 29 potential baserunners (44.8%). He was recently added to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, given to the top catcher in the country.

BENNETT OFF TO STRONG START After hitting 27 home runs as a senior at Farragut High School, UT freshman catcher/DH Ethan Bennett has wasted little time adjusting to the college game, as he is second on the team behind only Matt Duffy with four home runs and is hitting .302 (19-for-63) with 19 RBIs through his first 21 games at Rocky Top. After missing the first two weekends with a hamstring injury, Bennett exploded onto the scene with four home runs in three games. During that stretch, he hitting .583 (7-for-12) with 16 RBIs and six runs scored.

Bennett's talent isn't limited to the baseball diamond though, as he is also an accomplished musician with the ability to play the guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano.

VOLS OFF AND RUNNING Prior to the season, there was quite a bit of talk about Tennessee implementing a new, more aggressive baserunning philosophy. The Vols have walked-the-walk so far in 2011 as they have recorded 67 stolen bases in the first 33 games of the season to rank second in the SEC. By comparison, it took UT 48 games to reach that mark in 2010 and never got there in 2009 when it had just 39 thefts in 55 games.

The new baserunning program was on full display on Feb. 27 against Canisius, when the Big Orange was a near-perfect 9-for-10 on the basepaths, including a pair of double steals and three thefts of third. The last time a Tennessee team had nine stolen bases in one game came against Morehead State on Feb. 8, 2003.

UT had been successful in 20 straight stolen base attempts and 29 of 30 tries before having a runner thrown out on March 9. With 21 thefts, senior Khayyan Norfork is first in the league and has equaled the totals for the entire South Carolina and Auburn teams.

Not far behind Norfork is speedy freshman Andrew Toles who has the fourth-most stolen bases in the SEC with 16 in 20 attempts. That already bests current Texas Ranger centerfielder Julio Borbon for the fifth-most by a Tennessee freshman and ranks second among all freshmen in the NCAA, behind only Iona's Joe Torres who has 18.

UT-ALABAMA SERIES HISTORY SERIES HISTORY Alabama leads the all-time series with Tennessee, 68-28, dating back to the first meeting between the two squads in 1897, an 8-4 Crimson Tide win. Over the last 10 contests, Alabama holds a 7-3 advantage, including sweeps in each of the past two seasons. UT's last series win in Tuscaloosa, where it holds an all-time record of 9-28, came in 2000.

LAST SEASON Tennessee entered the final weekend of the 2010 regular season with a prime opportunity to earn a berth into the SEC Tournament, but three hard-fought losses knocked the Vols out of contention. Cody Hawn and Blake Forsythe carried the majority of the offensive load for the Big Orange, combining to hit three home runs and produce five of the team's 12 RBIs. P.J. Polk knocked in three runs of his own as well.

On the mound, Matt Ramsey pitched a career-high six innings of relief in the Saturday contest, striking out eight, but suffered the tough-luck loss in the heartbreaking defeat after yielding an 11th-inning home run to the Tide's Jake Smith. Steven Gruver started that game, allowing just a single run on four hits and recording five punchouts in his five frames of work.

TYLER HORNE | Senior Third Baseman In an effort to get a few laughs out of his teammates and fans this season, senior Tyler Horne selected Elton John's "Circle of Life" from the animated motion picture "The Lion King," as his walk-up song.

It has achieved its stated goal as both players and fans alike have embraced it. When Horne strides to the dish, it is not uncommon to see people imitating the scene from the movie where Rafiki presents Simba for all of the kingdom to see.

SAVING THE DAY One of the most eye-popping stats for Tennessee this season has come from the back of the team's bullpen. After recording four saves over the course of the entire 2010 campaign, the Vols already have 10 saves in 33 games this season, with seven different pitchers doing the honors no less. Matt Ramsey has -three and Zack Godley has two, while Nick Blount, T.J. Thornton, Levi Dean, Nick Williams and Drew Steckenrider each have one.

With nine career saves, Ramsey is currently tied with Rich DeLucia (83-86) for the fifth most in Tennessee history.

VOLS MAKING THE GRADE

Academics have been a top priority for the Vols since Todd Raleigh arrived in 2008. Proving that point, Tennessee increased its multi-year APR to 936, up from 850 in 2005. That increase represented the largest single-year jump by any team at UT as it had an APR of 898 last year. For the 2009-10 school year alone, the Vol baseball team posted a spectacular 982 APR. VOLS NOT LISTED IN NOTICE OF ALLEGATIONS The University of Tennessee received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA on Feb. 23. While an examination into potential rules violations by the University of Tennessee baseball program was referenced in the initial Letter of Inquiry from the NCAA, there were no alleged violations by the baseball program listed in this Notice.

RALEIGH REACHES CENTURY MARK AT UT With a 7-3 road victory over Lipscomb on March 23, Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh collected his 100th win at Rocky Top. In his fourth season with the Vols, the UT skipper is now 102-98 (.510).

Raleigh becomes just the fourth Tennessee coach to reach that mark in Knoxville, joining John Whited (145 wins/1982-87), Bill Wright (408/196381) and Rod Delmonico (699/1990-2007).

SHUTOUT STREAK OVER Prior to its 4-0 victory over Milwaukee on Opening Day (2/18), Tennessee's last shutout came on March 10, 2007, a span of three years, 11 months and eight days (209 games), when James Adkins and Ryne Simpson combined to blank Siena, 5-0, in Knoxville.

It didn't take the Vols to pick up another shutout as they accomplished the feat once again just a week later against Canisius (2/25), also by a 4-0 score. UT picked up another on March 9 with a 14-0 blanking over New Orleans.

NORFORK EXCELS ON OPENING DAY...AGAIN For the second straight season, Vol second baseman Khayyan Norfork opened the year with a bang.

After going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base in his UT debut against Xavier in 2010, Norfork kicked off the 2011 campaign with a 2-for4 effort, knocking in three of the team's four runs against Milwaukee in its 4-0 victory.

In his two Opening Day starts combined, Norfork is 6-for-9 (.667) with four RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

RECORD-SETTING ATTENDANCE ON OPENING WEEKEND Tennessee set a new school-record for total attendance in a home-opening series, drawing 6,111 fans (2,037/game) to the three-game set against Milwaukee, Feb. 18-20. The previous record was set in 1997 when the Vols drew 5,877 over three games against Eastern Kentucky. With 2,345 on hand on the first day of the 2011 season, UT had its secondhighest attendance for a home-opening contest, behind only the 2.753 that saw the Vols take on Louisville on Feb. 25, 1995.

rocky top bloodlines Freshman centerfielder Andrew Toles was born to bleed orange. A fourth-round selection by the Florida Marlins last June, Toles decded to put his professional career on hold in order to attend the same school where his father and uncle both excelled on the gridiron.

His father, Alvin, was a hard-hitting linebacker at Tennessee (1981-84) before being drafted in the first round of the 1985 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. His uncle, Johnnie Jones, also is the fourth-leading rusher in Tennessee history (82-84) and spent time with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL. His mother, Vicky, meanwhile, played basketball at the University of New Orleans, and his sister, Morgan plays basketball at Auburn. new faces in the crowd The Volunteers return 17 players, including seven starters, from last year's squad which finished with a record of 30-26. Joining them is a talented group of 14 newcomers, headlined by freshman Andrew Toles, a fourth-round pick by the Florida Marlins in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, and last year's Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year, Ethan Bennett from Farragut High School. All 14 newcomers have already made their way into a game this season. new faces on the coaching staff In addition to the 14 new players, Tennessee also welcomes a pair of new coaches in assistant coach Ash Lawson and volunteer assistant Barrett Shaft.

A former head coach at Tennessee Wesleyan, Lawson comes to Rocky Top from the San Diego Padres for whom he was a regional crosschecker. He was named the Padres' Scout of the Year in 2006.

Shaft is in his first season as a volunteer assistant after serving as a manager for the team last year. He is a 2008 graduate of Western Carolina.

homegrown talent plentiful on tennessee roster Tennessee’s roster includes 12 players from the state of Tennessee (38.7 percent of the roster). Five Vols are from Knox County and one is from Sevier County (Seymour), while two others hail from West Tennessee and four are from Middle Tennessee.

Four of the local players hail from Farragut High School, including senior Rob Catapano, junior Matt Ramsey and freshmen Ethan Bennett and Nick Williams.

Bennett was named a 2010 Louisville Slugger High School All American, Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year and TBCA Class AAA Player of the Year after setting a state single-season record with 27 home runs. He also hit .420 with 73 RBIs and scored 57 runs and set the national record for home runs in consecutive games, belting 16 during a 10-game stretch in April.

Williams also played a big role in leading Farragut to three straight state titles with Bennett, going 19-0 with 137 strikeouts and an 0.85 ERA during his three seasons on the varsity squad.

The COLOR orange On Sunday, Feb. 20, ESPN aired a feature-length documentary on former two-sport Tennessee star Condredge Holloway, entitled "The Color Orange."

The documentary, produced and directed by country music star Kenny Chesney, detailed Holloway's collegiate career as the first black quarterback in the SEC. In addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Holloway also served as the starting shortstop at UT, garnering first-team All-America recognition in 1975 after hitting .396 with 20 RBIs and two home runs.

Tennessee freshman catcher Ethan Bennett's talent isn't limited to the baseball field as he also has quite the ear for music. The Knoxville native plays five instruments, including the banjo, guitar, bass guitar, mandolin and piano.

Baseball Participates in Light the Night Walk, Raises More than $5,000 for Cancer Research For the fourth straight year, the University of Tennessee baseball team participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk Thursday evening at Circle Park on the UT campus. Since becoming involved with the event in 2007, the Volunteers have now helped to raise nearly $30,000, including over $5,000 this year, in support of research into the treatment and prevention of cancer.
