NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS The Tennessee baseball team will face its first ranked opponent of the season this weekend as it travels to the Sunshine State for a three-game series at No. 3 Florida. The Vols dropped two of three at home to Ole Miss last weekend, but rebounded on Wednesday with a 14-6 mid-week victory over UNC Asheville. The Volunteers are now 19-6 overall this season, including a 2-4 mark in SEC play. Senior third baseman Matt Duffy paved the way offensively last week, hitting .500 (7-for-14) with three doubles, a home run and three stolen bases. The Milton, Mass., native continues to lead the league with 30 RBIs and ranks second in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. On the mound, freshman Carter Watson has picked up two of the team's last three wins to move to a teambest 5-1 on the season. On the road at Lipscomb last week, the Murfreesboro native struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief. He followed that up with three more punchouts in two frames of work against the Bulldogs on Wednesday night. Another freshman earned the decision in Tennessee's other win, 6-4 over Ole Miss on Saturday, as Nick Williams was dominant in his two innings of action, striking out five. In that triumph over the Rebels, Tennessee junior closer Matt Ramsey collected his third save of the year by striking out the side in the ninth around two walks. The Knoxville native has now struck out 12 and allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings of work. With nine career saves, Ramsey moved into a tie for fifth all-time at UT with Rich Delucia (1983-86). For the season, he is averaging an astounding 19.06 strikeouts per nine innings. As a team, Tennessee has been flawless in the field recently, not making even a single error in its last four games. The Vols are now tied with Mississippi State for second in the SEC with a .975 fielding percentage, behind only Ole miss at .978. SCOUTING THE GATORS Ranked No. 1 for most of the season, Florida has dropped three of its last four games, falling twice to South Carolina last weekend before suffering a mid-week setback to in-state rival Florida State. The USC series ended a stretch of 13-consecutive weekend series triumphs for Florida and marked the Gators’ first loss in a league series since March 26-28, 2010, at Ole Miss and the squad’s first conference series setback at home since April 17-19, 2009, to Ole Miss. Sophomore catcher Mike Zunino batted a sizzling .583 (7-for-12) in the series with South Carolina, with two runs and a double. USC held Florida to a .217 (20-for-92) batting average on the weekend. In the Saturday contest, sophomore Hudson Randall (4-0, 0.66) went the distance for his first career complete game and retired the final 19 USC hitters of the contest. The righty gave up five singles, permitted an unearned run and registered four strikeouts without issuing any walks. In lowering his earned run average to 0.66 on the campaign, Randall has not allowed any earned runs in 15.2 innings of league action versus No. 5 LSU and No. 4 South Carolina.

TODD RALEIGH
Turn up the VOLume
Fourth Season Western Carolina, 1991 Record at UT: 102-90 (.531) Career Record: 359-299 (.546) Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is in his fourth season at Rocky Top after guiding his alma mater, Western Carolina, for eight seasons. While at UT, Raleigh has had 12 players drafted, including two in 2008 and five more in both 2009 and 2010, and two more sign free-agent contracts following the completion of their eligibility. Nine of those players were drafted in the top-20 rounds, highlighted by 2009 first-round selection Kentrail Davis. In 19 seasons as a collegiate coach, Raleigh has now produced a total of 45 MLB draft picks and 63 professional players. Under Raleigh's guidance, the Vols have steadily moved up in the NCAA RPI in each of the last three seasons, improving from 91 in 2008 to 58 in 2009 and 45 in 2010. Over the past two seasons, Raleigh’s squads have belted out 168 round-trippers (87 in 2009, 81 in 2010), good for the second-most prolific two-year period in school history. During his tenure in Cullowhee, Raleigh’s clubs won two regular-season Southern Conference championships, one Southern Conference tournament title, turned in five top-three league finishes and made a pair of NCAA Regional appearances—reaching the Regional final both times. His 2007 WCU team posted a winning record against teams in the top 35 of the RPI and earned a rare mid-major at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Catamounts were touted by ESPN’s Kyle Peterson as featuring an “SEC-style offense.” In his 19 seasons as a collegiate assistant or head coach, Raleigh’s teams have finished third or better in their respective league 12 times (63 percent). Raleigh and his wife, Stephanie, have four children: Caleb John “Cal” (13), Emma Grace (11), Carley Elizabeth (4) and Todd Anthony “T” (1).
““There is not another person that puts higher expectations on myself and this program than I do,” UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh said. “There is no doubt in my mind that we have this program headed in the right direction, especially this season. Everyone is on the same page in terms of coming to work every single day with the mindset of getting better. In the long run, that is really the only thing we can control.” — Head Coach Todd Raleigh
“Since I got here in the fall of 2007, we have improved every aspect of this program, from the facilities, to the Academic Progress Rate to the NCAA RPI. The last piece of the puzzle is putting it all together on the field and getting to the postseason. Has it happened as fast as we would have liked? Most certainly not. I understand the expectations of our fans, and this may sound odd, but I like the fact that some of them aren’t too happy right now. I love that they expect greatness, just like I do. Have there been some extenuating circumstances that have slowed us down a little? Sure, but our goal from day one has been to build a program, not a team. I have no doubt that that stuff is in the past and we are moving forward. We are going to be a national power, no question about that. I am confident that we are headed TODD RALEIGH NOTES in the right direction and cannot wait to get this u The Vols have steadily moved up in the NCAA RPI in each of the last three seasons, improving from 91 in season started.” — Head Coach Todd Raleigh 2008 to 58 in 2009 and 45 in 2010. “Ash brings a lot of energy and great ideas to our staff, especially with his insight on base running. “We have been working on a lot of small ball stuff. We don't have as many power guys, so we have to get back to the basics. A lot of bunting, base running and just small ball stuff. It's not a traditional team like we have had in the past but we are getting use to it. Top to bottom, it's just a group of scrappy guys. We are going to score runs in many different ways and put pressure on the other team to make mistakes." — Senior First Baseman Josh Liles “Our attitude is one of high intensity. That is one thing that we have focused on in our practices and scrimmages this fall and leading up to the spring. The chemisty on this team is definitely improved over what it has been in the last couple of years. We have a close-knit group and a group of seniors to lead us. We've set the bar high from the very beginning. The SEC Tournament is a bare minimum." — Junior Catcher/Closer Matt Ramsey

NOTEWORTHY TEAM QUICK HITS uTennessee is off to its best start through 25 games since opening with a 21-4 record in 2004. uThe Tennessee bullpen has a solid ERA of 3.04 in 112.2 innings of work this season. uSeven different UT pitchers have combined to record a total of 10 saves this year, after the entire team had just four in 2010. uTennessee pinch hitters are 7-for-20 (.350). uThe Vols are hitting .330 (96-for-291) with RISP and .335 (94-for-281) with two outs as a team. uUT has 64 two-out RBIs on the year, while holding its opponents to just 31. uTennessee has struck out just 115 times this season, the fewest of any team in the SEC. uThe Big Orange ranks third in the nation with 63 stolen bases in 77 attempts. uThe contest with Austin Peay on March 16 marked the Orange and White's first road game of the year, as Tennessee opened the 2011 season with 16 straight home games. That is the longest homestand for the Vols since they played 22 consecutive games in Knoxville to open the 1963 campaign.
DUFFY HITS FOR THE CYCLE
Senior third baseman Matt Duffy posted one of the most memorable offensive performances in Tennessee history against New Orleans on March 9, 2011, becoming just the second UT player to ever hit for the cycle. Duffy finished the contest 4-for-6 at the plate with a career-high three runs scored and four RBIs. He had a double in the first inning, a triple in the fourth, his second home run of the season in the fifth and a single in the eighth. INDIVIDUAL QUICK HITS uSenior Josh Liles needs 22 more hits to become the 15th member of Tennessee's 200-hits club. uWith 13 stolen bases, Andrew Toles has the second-most thefts of any freshman in the nation this year, behind only Jacksonville's Taylor Ratliff who has 15. uJunior Zach Osborne ranks second in school history with 19 career sacrifice bunts. He needs just three more to tie Bryce Christensen (94-95) for the all-time lead. uWith three saves this season, junior Matt Ramsey has increased his career total to nine, placing him in a tie with Rich DeLucia (83-86) for the fifth-most in the UT annals. Todd Helton holds the school record with 23. uIn nine career games against Florida, senior Josh Liles is hitting .333 (10-for-30) with five runs scored, three doubles, a home run, three RBIs and a stolen base. uJunior Matt Ramsey is hitting .444 (4-for-9) in three games against the Gators with a solo home run and two runs scored. uJunior Steven Gruver started the Sunday contest against UF last season, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He walked two and struck out one on 88 pitches (53 strikes). VOLS TOP HITTING TEAM IN SEC The Tennessee offense currently ranks among the top three in the Southeastern Conference in almost every major offensive category. It leads the league with a .319 batting average, 272 hits and 63 stolen bases, ranks second with a .414 on base percentage, .468 slugging percentage, 19 home runs and 393 total bases and third with 181 runs scored, 167 RBIs and 37 HBPs.
GRUVER SETTING THE TONE ON THE MOUND Junior starting pitcher Steven Gruver has done a fantastic job setting the tone for a UT pitching staff that looks much improved over recent years. In his first three starts alone, he led the Vols to a pair of shutouts before tossing a complete game in his fourth start. So far this year, he has struck out 45 and walked just six in 42.0 innings of work. He went six scoreless against Milwaukee on Opening Day before shutting down Canisius for seven frames on Feb. 26 when he posted a career-high 10 strikeouts. He has now pitched 6.0+ innings nine times in his career. In those nine games, he is 5-2 with a 2.18 ERA and 62 strikeouts to just 10 walks.

The transfer from Vermont has picked up right where he left off as he is currently hitting at a blistering .409 clip (36-for-88). A native of Milton, Mass., Duffy also has the most RBIs of any player in the SEC with 30, holds the team lead with five home runs and ranks second in the league in batting average, slugging percentage (.711) and on-base percentage (.545). He also tops the SEC with 10 HBPs. CATAPANO = WINNER Including his two seasons at North Carolina, Tennessee senior and Knoxville native Rob Catapano has started 15 collegiate games. The team he has started for has won all 15 contests, including all five of the games he started in 2010 for the Big Orange and all three of his starts so far this season. CATAPANO HAS SIGHTS SET ON MARINES Unless the option to continue his baseball career presents itself, Catapano plans on entering Officer Candidates School, a 10-week program in Quantico, Va., designed to train, evaluate and screen candidates for potential as Marine Corp officers. Graduates of OCC are commissioned immediately upon graduation as Second Lietenants and sent to The Basic School at Quantico for six months of further training. BENNETT OFF TO STRONG START After hitting 27 home runs as a senior at Farragut High School, UT freshman catcher/DH Ethan Bennett has wasted little time adjusting to the college game, as he is second on the team behind only Matt Duffy with five home runs and is hitting .315 (17-for-54) with 19 RBIs through his first 16 games at Rocky Top. After missing the first two weekends with a hamstring injury, Bennett exploded onto the scene with four home runs in three games. During that stretch, he hitting .583 (7-for-12) with 16 RBIs and six runs scored. Bennett's talent isn't limited to the baseball diamond though, as he is also an accomplished musician with the ability to play the guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano. VOLS OFF AND RUNNING Prior to the season, there was quite a bit of talk about Tennessee implementing a new, more aggressive baserunning philosophy. The Vols have walked-the-walk so far in 2011 as they have already recorded an SEC leading 63 stolen bases in the first 25 games of the season. By comparison, it took UT 46 games to reach that mark in 2010 and never got there in 2009 when it had just 39 thefts in 55 games. The new baserunning program was on full dis-
play on Feb. 27 against Canisius, when the Big Orange was a near-perfect 9-for-10 on the basepaths, including a pair of double steals and three thefts of third. The last time a Tennessee team had nine stolen bases in one game came against Morehead State on Feb. 8, 2003. UT had been successful in 20 straight stolen base attempts and 29 of 30 tries before having a runner thrown out on March 9. With 20 thefts, senior Khayyan Norfork is first in the league and has as many or more stolen bases than three different SEC teams (Auburn, S. Carolina, Alabama) by himself. Not far behind Norfork is speedy freshman Andrew Toles who has the third-most stolen bases in the SEC with 13 in 16 attempts. That already bests current Texas Ranger centerfielder Julio Borbon for the fifth-most by a Tennessee freshman. SAVING THE DAY One of the most eye-popping stats for Tennessee this season has come from the back of the team's bullpen. After recording four saves over the course of the entire 2010 campaign, the Vols already have 10 saves in the first 25 games this season, with seven different pitchers doing the honors no less. Matt Ramsey has three and Zack Godley has two, while Nick Blount, T.J. Thornton, Levi Dean, Nick Williams and Drew Steckenrider each have one. With nine career saves, Ramsey is currently tied with Rich DeLucia (83-86) for the fifth most in Tennessee history. VOLS MAKING THE GRADE Academics have been a top priority for the Vols since Todd Raleigh arrived in 2008. Proving that point, Tennessee increased its multi-year APR to 936, up from 850 in 2005. That increase represented the largest single-year jump by any team at UT as it had an APR of 898 last year. For the 2009-10 school year alone, the Vol baseball team posted a spectacular 982 APR. VOLS NOT LISTED IN NOTICE OF ALLEGATIONS The University of Tennessee received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA on Feb. 23. While an examination into potential rules violations by the University of Tennessee baseball program was referenced in the initial Letter of Inquiry from the NCAA, there were no alleged violations by the baseball program listed in this Notice. RALEIGH REACHES CENTURY MARK AT UT With a 7-3 road victory over Lipscomb on March 23, Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh collected his 100th win at Rocky Top. In his fourth season with

TYLER HORNE | Senior Third Baseman In an effort to get a few laughs out of his teammates and fans this season, senior Tyler Horne selected Elton John's "Circle of Life" from the animated motion picture "The Lion King," as his walk-up song. It has achieved its stated goal as both players and fans alike have embraced it. When Horne strides to the dish, it is not uncommon to see people imitating the scene from the movie where Rafiki presents Simba for all of the kingdom to see. the Vols, the UT skipper is now 102-90 (.531). Raleigh becomes just the fourth Tennessee coach to reach that mark in Knoxville, joining John Whited (145 wins/1982-87), Bill Wright (408/196381) and Rod Delmonico (699/1990-2007). NORFORK EXCELS ON OPENING DAY...AGAIN For the second straight season, Vol second baseman Khayyan Norfork opened the year with a bang. After going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base in his UT debut against Xavier in 2010, Norfork kicked off the 2011 campaign with a 2-for4 effort, knocking in three of the team's four runs against Milwaukee in its 4-0 victory. In his two Opening Day starts combined, Norfork is 6-for-9 (.667) with four RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs scored. OPENING DAY SOUTHPAWS With Steven Gruver earning the Opening Day start for the Vols this season, it marked the third consecutive campaign that the Vols have trotted a southpaw out to the mound to open the year.

UT-FLORIDA SERIES HISTORY SERIES HISTORY Florida leads the all-time series with Tennessee, 135-75, dating back to the first meeting between the two squads in 1916, a 10-2 Gator win in Gainesville. Over the last 10 contests, UF holds a slim, 6-4, advantage, including taking two of three in Knoxville last year. UT's last series win in Gainesville, where it holds an all-time record of 34-74, came in 2007. LAST SEASON Tennessee dropped two of three to No. 8 Florida in Knoxville last year, falling in the first and third games of its weekend series. The Orange and White’s lone win on the week came against the Gators on Saturday when Stephen McCray tossed 6.1 strong innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just one run while tying his career high with seven strikeouts and not walking a batter. With his effort, the Lilburn, Ga., native staked claim to his team-leading fourth win of the season. D.J. Leffler came out of the bullpen in all three games against UF, finishing the weekend with four punchouts in 3.1 scoreless innings. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native allowed just one hit and retired 10 of the 11 batters that he faced. Offensively, Matt Ramsey and P.J. Polk paced the Big Orange, hitting .444 with a home run and .385 with two stolen bases, respectively, in the series. Cody Hawn was the team’s top run producer over the course of the three games, knocking in five runs with three doubles. Joining them is a talented group of 14 newcomers, headlined by freshman Andrew Toles, a fourth-round pick by the Florida Marlins in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, and last year's Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year, Ethan Bennett from Farragut High School. All 14 newcomers have already made their way into a game this season. new faces on the coaching staff In addition to the 14 new players, Tennessee also welcomes a pair of new coaches in assistant coach Ash Lawson and volunteer assistant Barrett Shaft. A former head coach at Tennessee Wesleyan, Lawson comes to Rocky Top from the San Diego Padres for whom he was a regional crosschecker. He was named the Padres' Scout of the Year in 2006. Five Vols are from Knox County and one is from Sevier County (Seymour), while two others hail from West Tennessee and four are from Middle Tennessee. Four of the local players hail from Farragut High School, including senior Rob Catapano, junior Matt Ramsey and freshmen Ethan Bennett and Nick Williams. Bennett was named a 2010 Louisville Slugger High School All American, Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year and TBCA Class AAA Player of the Year after setting a state single-season record with 27 home runs. He also hit .420 with 73 RBIs and scored 57 runs and set the national record for home runs in consecutive games, belting 16 during a 10-game stretch in April. Williams also played a big role in leading Farragut to three straight state titles with Bennett, going 19-0 with 137 strikeouts and an 0.85 ERA during his three seasons on the varsity squad.

The COLOR orange On Sunday, Feb. 20, ESPN aired a feature-length documentary on former two-sport Tennessee star Condredge Holloway, entitled "The Color Orange." The documentary, produced and directed by country music star Kenny Chesney, detailed Holloway's collegiate career as the first black quarterback in the SEC. In addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Holloway also served as the starting shortstop at UT, garnering first-team All-America recognition in 1975 after hitting .396 with 20 RBIs and two home runs.
