NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS The Tennessee baseball team will face its first ranked opponent of the season this weekend as it travels to the Sunshine State for a three-game series at No. 3 Florida. The Vols dropped two of three at home to Ole Miss last weekend, but rebounded on Wednesday with a 14-6 mid-week victory over UNC Asheville. The Volunteers are now 19-6 overall this season, including a 2-4 mark in SEC play. Senior third baseman Matt Duffy paved the way offensively last week, hitting .500 (7-for-14) with three doubles, a home run and three stolen bases. The Milton, Mass., native continues to lead the league with 30 RBIs and ranks second in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. On the mound, freshman Carter Watson has picked up two of the team's last three wins to move to a teambest 5-1 on the season. On the road at Lipscomb last week, the Murfreesboro native struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief. He followed that up with three more punchouts in two frames of work against the Bulldogs on Wednesday night. Another freshman earned the decision in Tennessee's other win, 6-4 over Ole Miss on Saturday, as Nick Williams was dominant in his two innings of action, striking out five. In that triumph over the Rebels, Tennessee junior closer Matt Ramsey collected his third save of the year by striking out the side in the ninth around two walks. The Knoxville native has now struck out 12 and allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings of work. With nine career saves, Ramsey moved into a tie for fifth all-time at UT with Rich Delucia (1983-86). For the season, he is averaging an astounding 19.06 strikeouts per nine innings. As a team, Tennessee has been flawless in the field recently, not making even a single error in its last four games. The Vols are now tied with Mississippi State for second in the SEC with a .975 fielding percentage, behind only Ole miss at .978. SCOUTING THE GATORS Ranked No. 1 for most of the season, Florida has dropped three of its last four games, falling twice to South Carolina last weekend before suffering a mid-week setback to in-state rival Florida State. The USC series ended a stretch of 13-consecutive weekend series triumphs for Florida and marked the Gators’ first loss in a league series since March 26-28, 2010, at Ole Miss and the squad’s first conference series setback at home since April 17-19, 2009, to Ole Miss. Sophomore catcher Mike Zunino batted a sizzling .583 (7-for-12) in the series with South Carolina, with two runs and a double. USC held Florida to a .217 (20-for-92) batting average on the weekend. In the Saturday contest, sophomore Hudson Randall (4-0, 0.66) went the distance for his first career complete game and retired the final 19 USC hitters of the contest. The righty gave up five singles, permitted an unearned run and registered four strikeouts without issuing any walks. In lowering his earned run average to 0.66 on the campaign, Randall has not allowed any earned runs in 15.2 innings of league action versus No. 5 LSU and No. 4 South Carolina.
