NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS The Tennessee baseball team will close out a busy week with a three-game set at LSU after splitting a midweek home-and-home series against Middle Tennessee State. The Volunteers claimed a 5-4 victory at home over the Blue Raiders on Tuesday before dropping a 12-3 decision in Murfreesboro on Wednesday. The Big Orange will square off in a three-game set against LSU at Alex Box Stadium this weekend. The two teams will kick off the series at 8 p.m. ET on Friday. Game two will be televised on CSS at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday before the finale at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. On Tuesday against MTSU, Tennessee rallied from a three-run deficit and the bullpen closed out the game with three scoreless innings to snap an eight-game skid. Sophomore Zack Godley picked up the first win of his collegiate career with two perfect innings out of the bullpen, striking out two. He then handed the ball over to freshman Nick Williams who posted a scoreless ninth to tally his third save of the season. Senior Matt Duffy had a pair of doubles and scored two runs to pace the Big Orange offense. Junior Davis Morgan added a couple of singles, while sophomore Chris Fritts drove in two runs with a two-out single and a bases-loaded walk. Freshman Andrew Toles and senior Josh Liles each had a sacrifice fly in the contest as well. The Vols got solo home runs from Duffy, Khayyan Norfork and Ethan Bennett on Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough as MTSU jumped out to a double-digit lead after the first three innings. The longballs were the sixth of the year for both Duffy and Bennett, while Norfork's was his fourth. SCOUTING THE TIGERS LSU enters the weekend with a 30-19 overall record and an 8-16 mark in SEC play after dropping two of three at Alabama last week. Freshman second baseman JaCoby Jones enjoyed a productive week at the plate, batting .538 (7-for-13) in four games with one RBI, one stolen base and two runs scored. Sophomore first baseman/outfielder Mason Katz hit .375 (6-for-16) on the week with one double, two runs score and four RBI, while sophomore designated hitter Raph Rhymes batted .385 (5-for-13) with two RBI and one run scored. Freshman right-hander Ryan Eades posted a 1.12 ERA in two appearances, allowing one run on five hits in eight innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Eades defeated Tulane in a starting role last Tuesday, limiting the Green Wave to one run on two hits in six innings with four walks and one strikeout. Freshman right-hander Kevin Gausman fired a career-high 10 strikeouts against Alabama on Saturday. Gausman limited the Crimson Tide to four earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings, walking one Alabama hitter. Junior right-hander Matty Ott has fired 12 innings of scoreless relief for the Tigers over his past 10 appearances, limiting opponents to seven hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts. Ott, who has six saves this season, is LSU’s all-time saves leader with 32 in his career. Junior centerfielder Mikie Mahtook has increased his career stolen base total to 57, moving him into sixth place on the all-time LSU steals list. LSU will honor on Saturday College Baseball Hall of Fame member Eddy Furniss, who was inducted into the hall last summer. Furniss, who played first base at LSU from 1995-98, will be recognized in Alex Box Stadium prior to the Tigers’ game with Tennessee.
