WELCOME TO 2014 FIRST SERVE This weekend marks the start of the 2014 season for the Lady Vols, the 42nd in the recorded history of the program. On the heels of a 20-win season in 2012, a young roster that featured nine newcomers finished the 2013 season at 9-23 with a 1-17 mark in SEC play. After opening the season at home for four straight seasons from 2009-12, the Big Orange will be opening its season on the road for the second consecutive season. In fact, UT plays its first 10 matches of 2014 away from Knoxville. Since 2001 - when the Big Orange really began playing matches in August - UT is 34-6 in the month, including a 17-1 mark at home. Rob Patrick, now entering his 18th season as head coach, has made nine NCAA appearances with the Lady Vols, including five in the past six years. He recorded his 350th career victory last season in a 3-1 win over Coastal Carolina on Sept. 21. Under Coach Patrick, Tennessee is 13-4 in season openers and has begun five of its last six seasons with a ‘W.’ Tennessee welcomes eight newcomers to the 2014 squad, a figure that includes six freshmen.
Tennessee meets in-state foe Tennessee Tech, Cleveland State, and host Appalachian State at the 2014 Appalachian Invitational. It is the first weekend of competition for all four teams. Here’s how UT has fared historically against each of this weekend’s opponents: Tennessee Tech Series Record: UT leads, 28-4-1 Last Meeting: Tennessee won, 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-14) on Aug. 29, 2009 in the season-opener for both teams Notes: Friday marks the 34th meeting all-time between the two programs and dates all the way back to 1973. UT and TTU have met only once in the rally scoring era as the second most previous meeting was played in 1997. Cleveland State Series Record: Series tied, 1-1 Last Meeting: Tennessee won, 3-2 (15-13. 15-8, 12-15, 9-15, 15-8) on Sept. 5, 1998 Notes: The Lady Vols and Vikings last met in 1998 -- 24 years after the initial meeting between the two programs in 1974. UT has now faced a school from Ohio in its opening weekend for five straight seasons. Appalachian State Series Record: UT leads, 8-1 Last Meeting: Tennessee won, 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-14) Notes: Tenth meeting all-time. ASU’s only win in the series was a straight-sets victory in 1974 -- the first-ever meeting between the programs.
