UT OPENS UP AT CHATTANOOGA Tennessee tips off the 2012-13 regular season and the Holly Warlick era Friday night, as the Lady Volunteers travel to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to take on the Lady Mocs at 7 p.m. UT enters the 32nd meeting between these schools with a 19-game winning streak in the series and leads 25-6. UTC’s last win over Tennessee came on Jan. 26, 1973, with the Lady Mocs triumphing at Alumni Gym in Knoxville, 58-55. This marks the seventh time the Lady Vols have opened a season with Chattanooga, holding a 6-0 record in those matchups, including wins on the road in 2001 and 2004. The most recent season opener vs. UTC came on Nov. 11, 2007, as No. 1 Tennessee began what would become a second-straight NCAA Championship season with a 76-56 win in Knoxville. The last time the Big Orange played Chattanooga in McKenzie Arena (Nov. 21, 2008), the Lady Vols needed a clutch threepointer from Alicia Manning to tie the game with 1:22 to go and free throws in the closing minute from Vicki Baugh, Cait McMahan and Shekinna Stricklen to secure a 66-63 victory.
A ROOKIE IN THE STARTING LINEUP? Freshman Andraya Carter is listed as a probable starter vs. Chattanooga. Only 14 freshmen have started their first game as a Lady Vol. The current team has two players who did, including Ariel Massengale (Pepperdine, 11/13/11) and Taber Spani (Baylor, 11/15/09).
THE LAST TIME THEY MET In game 13 of the 2011-12 season, the Lady Vols used a 30-0 run to race to a 50-16 halftime lead. The end result was a 90-47 win in Knoxville on Jan. 3, 2012. (Then) freshman Ariel Massengale was a perfect six of six from the floor, draining all four of her three-point attempts and scoring 19 points. That effort propelled Tennessee to victory in its final non-conference game. Other UT returnee highlights: (then) freshman Isabelle Harrison added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Meighan Simmons scored 10. Glory Johnson contributed 10 more points, as the Big Orange outscored UTC in the paint, 30-12.
