SEASON OUTLOOK The Tennessee Lady Vol golf team has become synonymous with success under 11th-year head coach Judi Pavon. Tennessee has been to six of the last seven NCAA Championships and finished above .500 in head-to-head matchups every season, while nabbing 14 All-America awards, 28 All-SEC nods and capturing 13 tournaments since Pavon took over the program in 2000. Still Pavon, assistant coach Andrew Pratt and the rest of the Lady Vols aspire for more. They want to win an SEC Championship; they want better finishes at the NCAA Championships. They don’t just want to sustain their success. They want to build on their success. “Two huge goals for us in the next couple of years are to win the SEC Championship and become more competitive at the NCAA Championships,” Pavon said. “We’ve been successful, but I’d like to take us to a new level and reach some of those ultimate goals in the next few years.” The 2010-11 edition of the Lady Vols is as equipped as any Orange and White squad to make both of those goals a reality as UT begins a second decade with Pavon at the helm. With four of its top five returning, including a pair of All-America candidates, a No. 12 national ranking in the preseason and an outstanding schedule, this season has all of the makings of an historic campaign. The Lady Vols return two-time AllAmerican Nathalie Mansson, 2010 SEC Championship runner-up Erica Popson, senior Lauren Spurlock and sophomore Sara Monberg from the team that finished second at the 2010 NCAA East Regional and later
Sophomore Erica Popson is seeking to carry momentum from her phenomenal 2010 postseason into the 2010-11 campaign.

tied for 19th at the NCAA Championships. “Nathalie and Erica are going to be a great No. 1 and No. 2 players for us, and Sara Monberg gets better every day,” Pavon said. “I expect our returners to continue to improve and set high standards for themselves and the new players coming in.” In just two seasons, Mansson has already put together one of the finest careers ever by a Lady Vol. The junior from Stockholm, Sweden, set new Big Orange single-season marks for stroke average 73.06 and rounds of par or better (16) in 2009-10. She also ranked second in the country in final round average (71.17) and was named First Team All-SEC and Second Team NGCA AllAmerican. “Nathalie is ultra competitive,” Pavon said. “Collegiate golf is a step in a career she intends to continue past college. I know she will be working hard, performing well and I don’t expect any bumps in the road from her.” In her second season on Rocky Top, in addition to improving on her freshmanrecord stroke average (from 73.79-73.06), Mansson won medalist honors at backto-back tournaments, the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships and the Alamo Invitational. Her performances at the events also led UT to the team titles. “Hopefully she will win a major tournament this season,” Pavon said. “She got two wins last year, and the Mercedes-Benz victory was against a really good field.” Also expecting to contend for individual hardware will be Popson, a sophomore. After battling a wrist injury for most of the season that sidelined her for parts of three tournaments, the Davenport, Fla., native broke out in a big way at the SEC Championships en route to an incredible postseason run to end the season. Popson fired the lowest three-day total (208) in Tennessee history at the NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and was tied for top honors with Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex at the conference tournament. The rookie shook off the pain of losing a playoff to Alex to rebound and lead Tennessee at the NCAA East Regional and the NCAA Championships, tying for fourth and 18th, respectively. She didn’t shoot above a 73 in her final 10 rounds of the 2009-10 season and earned All-East Region and SEC All-Freshmen honors. She averaged a ridiculously low 71.10 over the final three events of her debut campaign. Pavon expects a healthy Popson to pick up right where she left off and give the Big Orange a lethal 1-2 combo at the top of the lineup. “She has very high expectations of herself and for her team, and the thing about Erica is she works to back them up,” Pavon said. “She doesn’t just talk about it, she
really works at it. She’ll shoot a lot of scores around even, par, breaking par some, and I hope that she’ll break through and get a win this year. I know she really is after winning a tournament, individually. Obviously, anything that she does individually will also benefit our team greatly.” Spurlock and Monberg are also expected to contribute and compete for a top-four position after returning from the 2010 NCAA lineup. Spurlock enters her final season as a twotime NCAA Championships competitor with a career average of 78.8. Since transferring to Rocky Top from Belmont University, the Memphis, Tenn. native has been tenacious in battling to get into the traveling lineup for the postseason. “Lauren has been a fantastic Lady Vol and a great leader,” Pavon said. “She saw a new swing coach this summer and really dedicated herself to improving her game. I’m excited to see how she comes in. She is very competitive and always gives the team a good spark when she plays. I’m looking forward to Lauren having a fantastic senior season.” Monberg was a consistent presence in the Lady Vol top-five as a rookie and ranked fourth on the team in scoring average. The Juelsminde, Denmark, native has a knack for the low round and the spectacular shot, ranking second on the Lady Vols in birdies (70) and carding five rounds of par or better. This past summer, she won the Danish Stroke Play Championship. “Sara was a really great asset for us last year,” Pavon said. “She is starting to realize little-by-little how great she is and how great she can be. Over the summer, she competed a lot and played really well. She is going to be a big key to our success over the next three years while she is here. I expect her to continue her solid play and even improve more because she is so motivated.” That veteran quartet is expected to be the core of the 2010-11 squad, but four other Lady Vols will push to play each weekend. UT also returns senior Rebecca Watson and sophomore Leigh Henderson, while welcoming freshmen Kaitlyn Rohrback and Chessey Thomas. Watson has seen plenty of time in the Lady Vols’ lineup over the last three years and shown flashes of success. She led UT at the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championship with a careerbest finish (t15th) and score (219), but only played in one tournament a year ago. She competed on a college golf all-star team in Asia over the summer. “Like Lauren, Rebecca has been a pleasure to coach and is just a great allaround person,” Pavon said. “She had the opportunity to make the Asia trip over the summer which I think gave her some
SEASON OUTLOOK
After a stellar summer, sophomore Sara Monberg is expected to be among UT top-three performers in 2010-11.
renewed vigor and energy for golf. Her game looks solid and I expect her to be back in the lineup at some point this season. I know she wants to contribute and enjoy her senior year to the fullest.” Henderson has also flashed promise in her short Lady Vol career. As a freshman, she competed in two tournaments and recorded her season-best round of 74 at the Mercedes-Benz. However, this season, the Knoxville native also fired a hole-in-one during practice and looks ready to make a leap in her game this season. “Leigh really improved over the summer and her game looks great,” Pavon said. “I think she is going to be really competitive for us this season. Her long game has always been good, and she has made good gains in her short game. I’m excited for it all to be coming together for Leigh.” Rohrback and Thomas come in with impressive prep résumés. Both won state championships this past year in Maryland and Washington, respectively. Rohrback’s win was actually in the boys high school division, while Thomas was a four-time league player of the year. “We’re very excited to welcome Kaitlyn and Chessey to the Lady Vol family,” Pavon said. “Kaitlyn and Chessey have different games, but I expect both to be very successful this season. Kaitlyn, is an accurate player – not quite as long as Chessey, but she has had some big wins in her career including her high school boys championship. I think with her determination she will be a key player for us this season. “Chessey is a long hitter and that will suit her well in the college game. She has played basketball her whole career, so this year will be her first being a single-sport athlete. And being from the state of Washington, it will
be her first season of year-round golf, which I expect to really help her game. She is a great player and a great competitor, and I expect her to step up and make a difference this year.” The talent and competitiveness of this season’s team will make determining a lineup each week a difficult task for Pavon. She concedes it’s a good problem to have, though. “I’m excited,” the former All-American and LPGA player said. “Qualifying is going to be really competitive this year. I could not predict our lineup for the first tournament right now at all. I expect us to have a lot of qualifying throughout the season to determine the lineup. I won’t be picking, players will be earning exemptions or playing in qualifying. So I think it will be on their shoulders, and they will know what’s expected and what to do to be in the lineup.” Pavon has set up one of the toughest schedules in the country to prepare her squad for success in the postseason. The Lady Vols added the prestigious Fall Preview, the Golfweek Conference Challenge, the SEC/Pac-10 Challenge, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, the LSU Classic and the Rebel Intercollegiate to their upcoming schedule to go along with mainstay tournaments, the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships and the Bryan National Collegiate, as well as postseason events, the SEC Championships, NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships. UT will host the annual Mercedes-Benz competition, now in its 14th year, for the first time ever at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. “Our schedule will be very challenging this season, so that will really help us prepare to
be tougher next postseason than we were last year,” Pavon said. “We will be striving to win our first SEC Championship and will be looking for a top-five performance at the NCAA Championships.” Beginning the season at the Fall Preview in College Station, Texas, could be very beneficial for the Lady Vols. The tournament is set at the site of the NCAA Championships and thus gives teams a sneak peak at what the course will be like for Nationals. Tennessee hasn’t played at the preview tournament since 2006. “We’re really thankful and excited to be playing at the Fall Preview,” Pavon said. “I think missing the Fall Preview in the last two years, but making it the championship has been great. It also hurt us at the championship that we were not at the preview. We are really going to use this as an opportunity to see what that championship course is like and compete against the best teams.” The plan is for the Lady Vols’ performance at the season-opener to provide the momentum for them to build on throughout the fall and into the spring season. The Orange and White are hoping another Mercedes-Benz championship will be in the cards after taking an individual and team sweep at the event last season. The Lady Vols will remain focused on the end of the season, however. As Pavon’s successful philosophy has been the past decade, contending for the Big Orange’s first-ever conference title and a top spot on the leaderboard at the national tournament are perennially the two main goals. “These have always been the goals each year,” Pavon said. “We just have to hit them. We want to reach the next level.”
A two-time medalist winner, junior Nathalie Mansson’s 2010-11 season is expected to include more fist pumps.

THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE “THE STANDARD FOR EXCELLENCE” he Southeastern Conference, with its T storied 77-year history of athletic achievements and academic excellence, has built perhaps the greatest tradition of intercollegiate competition of any league in the country since its inception in 1933. The 2009-10 academic year was another season to remember for the SEC as conference teams captured four national titles and four national runner-up finishes. The SEC has won consecutive national championships in baseball and football. Since 1990, the SEC has won 135 national team championships for an average of more than six per year. Alabama won the SEC’s first national title of the year with its win in the BCS National Championship Game in football. It is the SEC’s fourth consecutive football national title. Florida captured its second women’s swimming and diving national championship. Florida also won its first ever championship in men’s indoor track and field. South Carolina won the national championship in the sport of baseball. Florida finished first among Southeastern Conference schools and second overall in the Director’s Cup final standings. Overall, the SEC finished in the top two in nine of its 20 sponsored sports and in the top five in 14 of the 20 sports. Ten SEC teams participated in football postseason bowls with Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn and Georgia winning the BCS National Title Game, Sugar, Cotton, Liberty, Outback, and Independence bowls, respectively. Four men’s basketball teams were invited to the NCAA Tournament and seven women’s basketball teams were also invited to the NCAA Tournament. The SEC had a eight teams advance to postseason play in baseball hosting four regionals with South Carolina and Florida advancing to the College World Series. With 145 teams advancing to NCAA postseason competition, the SEC continued to solidify its place as the nation’s premier conference. In addition to the four team championships, 41 SEC student-athletes garnered individual national championships, while 440 individuals were awarded with First-Team AllAmerican Honors. Student-athletes around the league continued to excel in the classroom as well with more than 2,300 earning recognition on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. On the national all-sport level, 11 SEC schools placed in the top 60 of the NACDA Director’s Cup rankings. Florida led the league with a second place finish. Tennessee placed 16th while LSU was 19th; Georgia finished 20th, Alabama 23rd, Auburn 26th, Kentucky 29th, South Carolina 41st, Arkansas 46th, Ole Miss 56th and Vanderbilt 59th to round out the league’s top-60 finishes.
SEC WOMEN’S GOLF HIGHLIGHTS Throughout the history of golf in the Southeastern Conference, the league has provided a strong tradition of excellence on the links. The SEC has won 10 men’s and three women’s golf NCAA crowns in its history, with the latest coming in 2005, when Georgia captured the men’s national championship. Since 1985, the SEC has captured seven team national titles – four men’s and three women’s crowns (Georgia, 2001; Florida, 1985 and 1986). Since 1985, 48 SEC men’s teams have finished in the top 10 of the NCAA Championships, 37 since 1990. On the women’s side, 61 teams have broken into the top 10 at the NCAA Championships and 57 individuals have been named first-team All-America. Individually, the SEC has 11 national champions, with Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis winning the latest title in 2007. On the men’s side, Florida’s Nick Gilliam won the last title in 2001. Last season, the SEC had Florida, LSU and Tennessee finish in the top 25 of the NCAA men’s national championships, while conference champion Alabama (third) and Vanderbilt (seventh) placed in the NCAA women’s national championships top 10, while Auburn, South Carolina and Tennessee also competed at the tournament.

JUDI PAVON HEAD COACH • 11TH SEASON PRESIDENT • nATIONAL GOLF COACHES ASSOCIATION
A Decade of Success Over the last decade, the Lady Volunteer golf program has been a constant force in the Southeastern Conference and on the national level under the guidance of Judi Pavon, the current National Golf Coaches Association President. Since Pavon became head coach in 2000, the Big Orange has captured 13 tournament titles, competed at seven NCAA Championships and been a constant presence in top 25 rankings. Individually, Lady Vols have captured 14 AllAmerica awards, 28 All-SEC nods and 21 NGCA Academic All-America citations under the tutelage of Pavon. In the “decade of success” with Pavon, the Orange and White have continued UT’s streak of finishing above .500 in head-to-head matchups and competing at the NCAA Regional Championships every season. A Helena, Mon., native, Pavon took charge of the Lady Vol golf program after serving as the interim head coach for the final two events of the 1999-2000 season and as an assistant coach on The Hill for three seasons (1997-2000). Before coming to Rocky Top, Pavon had a standout golf career, playing professionally from 1990-1994 and earning All-America honors as a collegian at Alabama. She and her husband, Luis, a former UA golfer, live in Knoxville with their two daughters, Alexa and Maya.
Another Impressive Season The 2009-10 season was one of Pavon’s most successful campaigns with the Orange and White, as UT won back-to-back tournaments, the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships and the Alamo Invitational, in October to wrap up the fall. Sophomore star Nathalie Mansson nabbed medalist honors at both tournaments, as well, while the MercedesBenz win was by a tournament-record 19 strokes. UT vaulted to as high as No. 6 in the country in the rankings after the fall portion of the schedule. In the spring, the Lady Vols nearly won their fourth NCAA Regional crown. UT placed second at the NCAA East Regional to vault the squad to its unprecedented sixth NCAA Championship in seven years, where it placed 19th. At the regional, UT broke its record for low score through 36 holes, tallying a two-day mark of 570 to break the 574 tally set at the Mercedes-Benz event earlier in the season. Along the way, freshman Erica Popson cemented herself as a force to be reckoned with on the national scene, recording a stroke average of 71.10 over the final three tournaments of the season. She nearly won the SEC Championship, tying for first, before nabbing runner-up accolades

in a playoff, and set the Tennessee record for 54hole total (208) in the process. She also led three Lady Vols in the top 10 at the regional competition, tying for fourth, with senior Diana Cantú tying for seventh and Mansson tying for ninth. Mansson had one of the finest individual seasons in Lady Vol history, as she set new single-season marks for stroke average (73.06) and rounds of par of better (16) in addition to her two tournament victories and eight top 10 placements. She was named to the All-SEC First Team, while Cantú captured second team allconference honors and Popson was tabbed to the SEC’s All-Freshman squad. The trio became the 26th, 27th and 28th All-SEC honorees under Pavon. Mansson also was named a Second Team All-American by the NGCA and Golfweek. Cantú and fellow senior Ginny Brown both wrapped up their playing careers. Cantú had the best season of her four-year stretch at Rocky Top in 2009-10 and completes her career among UT’s top 10 in career stroke average and rounds played. Brown became one of Pavon’s and the Lady Vols’ greatest success stories, shaving nearly five strokes off her season average between the 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns and finishing with a 78.10 career average. For the season, UT won two tournaments – increasing Pavon’s UT alltime best record to 13 titles – while producing 135 head-to-head wins, the second most in a season in Big Orange history. Academically, Pavon’s charges continued to find just as much success in the classroom. Junior Lauren Spurlock and freshman Sara Monberg were named to the NGCA All-Scholar (Academic All-America) Team and the pair was joined on the SEC Spring Honor Roll by teammates Cantú, Mansson, Popson, Brown and Rebecca Watson.
Lady Vols in the Pros, Coaching Ranks Three of Pavon’s former star pupils at UT are currently competing on the Duramed FUTURES Tour. Angela Oh, who played for UT from 200608, won the 2010 season-opener on the LPGA feeder circuit’s schedule, the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic in March and earned her LPGA card after capturing five top-10 finishes to vault her among the tour’s top-10 money winners over the past season. Current volunteer assistant Jessica Shepley and recent UT graduate Nichole Smith are also in the midst of wrapping up successful 2009-10 professional campaigns. Smith snagged two top-10 placements in her inaugural FUTURES season, while Shepley has banked nearly $100,000 in six years on the tour. She also has status on the LPGA Tour and recently competed at the CN Canadian Women’s Open. Shepley played for the Big Orange and Pavon from 2001-05, while Smith competed from 2005-09. Both earned AllSEC and All-America honors during their careers. Additionally, former Tennessee star Young-A Yang competes on the LPGA Tour. Yang, who is Tennessee’s only four-time All-American, played in five tournaments in 2010 and has career earnings of nearly $700,000. Yang has played in over 100 LPGA events and nabbed six top-10 performances since joining the tour in 2003. Her
career-best finish of second-place came at the 2004 Giant Eagle Classic. Since Pavon became head coach of the Orange and White in 2000, nine Lady Vols have competed in the pro ranks. Playing for Pavon also appears to be a great prep for a career in coaching after an athlete’s competitive days wrap up. Carrie Parnaby (née Cole), who played at UT from 1998-02 and then was an assistant coach at Rocky Top, was named the head women’s golf coach at UTSA in 2008. This past summer, a pair of recent Tennessee grads nabbed coaching positions in the SEC. Golda Johansson Borst was named the head women’s golf coach at the University of Kentucky, while Vanderbilt selected Holly Clark (née Cantwell), to be its assistant coach. Borst played at Tennessee from 2002-06 before spending three years as an assistant coach at LSU. Clark played for Tennessee from 2003-07 and was previously the head coach at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.
She Was a Star Student-Athlete Too Tennessee decade of success under Pavon should come as no surprise, as not only does she have an extensive coaching background, but she was also a star golfer on the high school, collegiate and professional levels. Pavon (formerly Schneider) graduated magna cum laude from the University of Alabama in 1989. At The Capstone, she was an NGCA All-American as a senior and a three-time NGCA Academic All-American. The SEC also tabbed Pavon as a first-team all-conference selection in 1989. She claimed two individual titles and qualified as an individual for the NCAA Championships in 1989. Moreover, she was honored with the prestigious Paul “Bear” Bryant Student-Athlete of the Year award. As a team, the Crimson Tide finished ninth at the 1987 NCAA Championships, Alabama’s
JUDI PAVON a decade of excellence • Current President of the NGCA • UT coaching record for head-to-head wins (1,777) • UT coaching record for tournament titles (13) • Has taken Tennessee to seven NCAA Championships • 2006 SEC Coach of the Year • 14 All-America citations • 28 All-SEC nods • 21 NGCA Academic All-America selections • Lady Vols have never missed the NCAA Regional Tournament • Six NCAA appearances in seven years (2004-07, 09-10) first appearance ever. She led the club in stroke average her junior and senior seasons. After her collegiate career wrapped up, Pavon continued her success in the professional ranks, where she competed in five LPGA major championships – the 1992 and 1997 LPGA Championships, 1991 and 1993 U.S. Open and the 1992 duMaurier Championship. She also captured the LPGA Southeast Section Championship in 1997. Overall, she was a member of the LPGA Tour from 1991-92 and competed on the FUTURES Tour in 1990 and 1993-94. Her career began in Montana, as she became a prep star and captured the 1984 and 1985 Montana State High School titles. Additionally, she was crowned the state’s Amateur Champion in 1986 and 1989 and was inducted into the Montana State Women’s Golf Hall of Fame in 1996.
Success from the Start Pavon has had success from the minute she took over the Lady Vol program as the interim head coach for the final two tournaments of the 1999-00 season. After serving as an assistant since 1997, she took her first team to the NCAA Championships, where it finished fifth – still the best national tournament finish in Orange and White history. A year later, Pavon was named the Southeast Section Coach of the Year by the LPGA and although the Lady Vols didn’t make a return trip to the NCAA Championships, Yang placed fifth as individual at the national event and captured First Team All-America honors. In Pavon’s second full year as head coach, 2001-02, the Lady Vols finished the season ranked No. 8 for the second straight year. Yang capped
her career as the first four-time All-American in program history. In 2002-03, Tennessee won three tournament titles and freshman Violeta Retamoza took the college scene by storm, gaining Second Team All-America accolades and joining Shepley on the All-SEC First Team. In a little over three seasons, Pavon already had led UT to a new-coaching record of six event titles, coached a four-time All-American and led the Lady Vols to their highest placement ever in the national tournament.
Four in a Row Despite the success, the Lady Vols failed to qualify as a team to the NCAA Championship in the three years after Pavon took over. However, that quickly changed, as UT returned to the national event each of the next four seasons. Heading into this season, Tennessee has cemented itself as a perennial national power, competing at NCAAs in six of the last seven seasons including two regional titles. Pavon guided the Lady Vols back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2000 campaign in 2003-04, where they finished 11th. Individual achievements continued as well, with Shepley earning honorable mention All-America laurels and Retamoza tying for first at the SEC Championship. During the 2004-05 season, Tennessee tied for sixth place at the NCAA Championships, qualifying to the tournament by winning the NCAA West Regional. Retamoza had one of the best seasons in Big Orange history by capturing SEC Player of the Year and First Team All-SEC honors. Pavon snagged SEC Coach of the Year accolades after leading the Lady Vols to three event titles in 2005-06. The season included
what is still the finest Lady Vol team performance ever at a tournament, as Lady Vols placed 1-23-4 at the Donnis Thompson, firing school record 855. Sophomore Marci Turner rode a final round 64 to medalist honors at the Honolulu, Hawaii competition. The Big Orange took first at the NCAA East Regional and 13th at the NCAA Championships. Turner captured her second All-America award in 2006-07, while sophomore Nicole Smith nabbed her first A-A honor, as the Lady Vols capped the season with a 17th-place finish at their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship. Turner also became the second Lady Vol to earn the prestigious Edith Cummings Munson Award given to the All-American with the highest grade point average in the country.
Wrapping Up an Impressive Decade
Tennessee bounced back from missing the 2008 NCAA Championship by advancing to the next two national tournaments. The 200809 campaign was one of Pavon’s finest as a coach, as she guided the team a No. 72 ranking in the fall to final rating of No. 20 and an NCAA Championships berth. After placing in the top-10 only once in four fall tournaments, the Lady Vols reeled off six consecutive top-eight placements en route to the national championships. Mansson burst on to the collegiate scene that season by capturing All-East Region, AllSEC Second Team and SEC All-Freshman Team honors, while leading the Lady Vols with a UT freshman record average of 73.79. It was a performance the Stockholm, Sweden, native improved on as she and the Lady Vols advanced to NCAA Championships a second straight year in 2009-10.
TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT HEAD COACH JUDI PAVON What is your favorite memory from your playing days? “Every tournament I played on the LPGA Tour. It was such a great experience. To realize my dream and be a tour player was something I’m very proud of. Being able to compete day in and day out with the best players in the world was unbelievable.” What are your strengths as a coach? “I really focus on helping the girls become better players overall. They already know how to swing and hit good shots, so I focus on teaching them to make better decisions. Self confidence is also a huge part of golf, so I take the time to get to know each player and figure out how to make them feel great about themselves and get the most out of their game.” What is an interesting fact about you or something that might surprise people? “I play golf left handed. I was the second lefty ever to play the LPGA tour and the only lefty during my two seasons on tour. Also, I’m from a small town in Montana named Helena – it would take three of my hometown to fill Neyland Stadium!”

ANDREW PRATT ASSISTANT COACH • 3RD SEASON
Andrew Pratt begins his third season as the assistant coach with the Lady Vol golf team looking to help guide the squad to a third consecutive NCAA Championships appearance. A 2004 Tennessee graduate, Pratt was a standout golfer on the Tennessee men’s team before spending four years playing golf professionally on the Nationwide Tour. Two of Pratt’s biggest strengths while playing at UT and professionally were his short game (putting, chipping and bunker play) and course management skills (knowing when and how to play a certain shot). His knowledge in those areas is a huge asset to the Orange and White. The Bartlett, Tenn., native’s professional and collegiate experience has proved to be an immediate asset to the Lady Vols’ program. After missing the 2008 NCAA Championships, Tennessee has competed at the national tournament the past two seasons. “One of the reasons why Judi hired me was to help her team improve its overall short game,” Pratt said. “We worked extremely hard the last two years, not only on their short games, but also on their decision making on the course. The hard work that these young ladies have put forth is starting to pay off.” In 2008-09, UT bounced back from a slow start in the fall to cap the season by
placing fourth at the SEC Championships, third at the NCAA East Regional and 17th at the NCAA Championships. After dropping to No. 72 in the Golfstat rankings in the fall, the Lady Vols’ outstanding spring gave them a season-ending ranking of No. 20. In Golfstat’s various statistical categories, the Lady Vols made a significant leap in rankings during Pratt’s first season. In total short game, Tennessee improved from 67th in 2007-08 to 31st in 2008-09. The Lady Vols also improved in sand saves, from 59th to 27th, three putts, 69th to 27th, putts per green in regulation, 36th to 18th, and average putts per round, 80th to 16th. Last season, Tennessee captured back-to-back tournaments in the fall, the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships and Alamo Invitational, placed runner-up at the NCAA East Regional and tied for 19th at NCAAs. Mansson nabbed individual medalist honors at the Mercedes-Benz and Alamo tournaments. The Lady Vols also continued to improve their short game as a team, moving from 31st nationally to 14th in 2009-10 in the Golfstat rankings. Additionally, the Lady Vols were eighth in the country in non-sand up and downs, ninth in putts per round, 13th in putts per greens in regulation and 18th in three putt holes. During his professional career on the Nationwide Tour, Pratt had five top-10 finishes, including a runner-up performance at the 2005 Xerox Classic. He also was the 2004 and 2005 Tennessee State Open Champion, and the 2004 Tennessee State Amateur Champion. By winning the 2004 Tennessee State Open and State Amateur Championship, Pratt became only the third
player in Tennessee golf history to capture both titles in the same year. He played in four consecutive U.S. Amateur Championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003) and the 2004 British Amateur Championship. While at UT, Pratt competed at the 2000 and 2003 NCAA Championships, earned AllSEC Second Team honors in 2002 and was a two-time Academic All-American. In 2003, he led the Vols to a fourth-place finish at the SEC Championships by firing a 211 (72-6970) to place fourth individually. Pratt is married to UT alum Sara Buff Pratt, and they reside in Knoxville with their 1-year-old son Cooper. Outside of golf, Pratt enjoys fly-fishing and the outdoors.
TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT ASSISTANT COACH ANDREW PRATT What is your favorite memory from your playing days? “I have a lot of great memories from playing, but the one that sticks out the most was finishing second in a Nationwide event (Xerox Classic) in 2005. It was my first full year as a professional and at the time I was playing on the NGA Hooters Tour. I had a few investors from Rochester, N.Y., that told me to come up and try to qualify for this Nationwide event. I figured if I didn’t make it through the qualifier I would just stay the week and play golf with them. I ended up getting into a playoff in the Monday qualifier and birdied my second hole to get myself into the tournament. I was so excited having just qualified for my first Nationwide event, and I had know idea what to expect in the tournament. To make a long story short, I ended up losing by one shot and the $59,400 that I made that week gave me status for the following year on the Nationwide Tour. This was the tournament that jump-started my professional golfing career.” What is an interesting fact about you or something that might surprise people? “I play golf left-handed, and people always ask how I started to play that way. My dad was a hockey player, so when he got me started into hockey he just gave me a left-handed hockey stick. When he got me started playing golf, I immediately picked up a left-handed club. So anything that involves hitting I do it left-handed (golf, hockey, baseball), but anything that involves throwing I do it right-handed.”

2009-10 SEASON REVIEW In 2009-10, the Tennessee women’s golf team invited you to “Take a Closer Look” at one of the country’s elite programs. Under the guidance of Judi Pavon, the Lady Vols have been a constant presence in the top 25 rankings and threat to capture every tournament they enter. The 2009-10 squad did not disappoint, putting forth another successful season that included back-toback tournament wins and a ninth trip to the NCAA Championships. The Big Orange captured the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships and the Alamo Invitational, in October – a two-week span where the Lady Vols played some of their best golf of the season to cap the fall. Sophomore star Nathalie Mansson nabbed medalist honors at both tournaments, as well, while the Mercedes-Benz win was by a tournament-record 19 strokes. UT vaulted to as high as No. 6 in the country in the rankings after the fall portion of the schedule. In the spring, the Lady Vols nearly won their fourth NCAA Regional crown. UT placed second at the NCAA East Regional to advance the squad to its unprecedented sixth NCAA Championship in seven years, where it placed 19th. She nearly won the SEC Championship, tying for first, before nabbing runnerup accolades in a playoff, and set the Tennessee record for 54-hole total (208) in the process. She was named to the AllSEC First Team, while Cantú captured second team all-conference honors and Popson was tabbed to the SEC’s AllFreshman squad. The trio became the 26th, 27th and 28th All-SEC honorees under Pavon. Mansson also was named a

second-team All-American by the NGCA and Golfweek. Cantú and fellow senior Ginny Brown both wrapped up their playing careers. Cantú had the best season of her fouryear stretch at Rocky Top in 2009-10 and completed her career among UT’s top 10 in career stroke average and rounds played. Brown became one of Pavon’s and the Lady Vols’ greatest success stories, shaving nearly five strokes off her season average between the 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns and finishing with a 78.10 career average. For the season, UT won two tournaments – increasing Pavon’s UT all-time best record to 13 titles – while producing 135 head-to-head wins, the second most in a season in Big Orange history. Academically, Pavon’s charges continued to find just as much success in the classroom. Junior Lauren Spurlock and freshman Sara Monberg were named to the NGCA All-Scholar (Academic AllAmerica) Team and the pair was joined on the SEC Spring Honor Roll by teammates Cantú, Mansson, Popson, Brown and Rebecca Watson. The Lady Vols opened the season with a fourth-place finish at the Cougar Classic in September at the Yeamans Hall course in Charleston, S.C. Mansson led four Lady Vols in the top-21 at the tournament, as she fired a 1-under 215 to tie for 10th. Cantú, Popson and Brown all carded 3-over 219 scores to tie for 21st as UT totaled its best score in three years, 872. Following the season-opener, Tennessee again placed its top four
among the top 21 finishers at the Tar Heel Invitational in October at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Durham, N.C. This time, Cantú led the charge with a 2-over 218 tally and a tied-for-11th placement. Mansson, Popson and Brown all tied for 21st as the Orange and White finished sixth. A week later, the Lady Vols had arguably their finest performance of the season at their home tournament, the Mercedes-Benz Championships, held at Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville. UT jumped out to a 13-stroke lead after firing a 3-under 283 team total during the opening round and never let off the gas en route to winning the competition by a tournament record. Mansson was tied with Louisville’s Laura Anderson after 54 holes (3-under 213) and was able to shake off a final hole bogey to outlast her opponent in playoff. The Stockholm, Sweden, native made five straight pars to win her first collegiate individual title. UT totaled 881 (+4) as Brown (third) fired a career-best 1-under 215 to place third and Cantú fired a 3-over 219 to tie for eighth. Monberg tied for 13th to round out the scoring with a 6-over 222 total. Tennessee made it back-to-back wins a week later at the rain-shortened Alamo event. Mansson tied for medalist honors with Notre Dame’s Annie Brophy with a 2-under 70 score, while Cantú and Monberg tied for fourth with even-par 72s and Popson wrapped up the title with a 3-over 75 in 19th. Tennessee tallied a 1-over 289 to cap the fall portion of the schedule. After an over three-month absence
2009-10 SEASON REVIEW from competition, the Lady Vols opened the spring by placing 11th in wet and windy conditions at the Wildcat Invitational at Arizona National in Tuscon, Ariz. In February. Mansson and Cantú led UT at the 36-hole event, tying for 22nd and 27th, respectively. A little over a week later, Tennessee contended for the title at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga. Paced by Cantú’s sixth-place performance and Mansson’s tie for 10th, the Lady Vols settled for third. Back-to-back sixth-place finishes from Mansson followed for the Big Orange in March. Led by Mansson’s 5-over 221 total the Orange and White carded a 905 team score over 54 holes to finish alone in sixth at the Tiger-Wave Classic at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans. Mansson added another sixth-place performance two weeks later at the Liz Murphey Classic, but the Lady Vols struggled to 16th at the tournament in Athens, Ga. Popson returned to the lineup for her first full competition of the spring at the Liz Murphey, but it would take a few more events before she was back to normal following a wrist injury. She tied for 69th at the University of Georgia-hosted tourney before tying for 75th at the Bryan National Collegiate to open April. Mansson continued to carry the squad at the Bryan National event held and Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C., earning runner-up with a season-best score of 3-under 213 as UT tied for sixth. Cantú added a tied-for-20th placement in the final regular season tournament. Following her fourth-straight top-10 finish, Mansson was named the SEC Golfer of the Week on April 13. At the 2010 SEC Championship, Popson had the tournament of a lifetime, nearly becoming the second Lady Vol to earn medalist honors at the conference event, while setting the Tennessee record for 54-hole score. In only her third full
tournament of the spring, the Davenport, Fla., native tied with Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex after three rounds before falling on the second playoff hole to earn runnerup honors at NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Her score in relation to par (-5) was also the third-best in Lady Vol history. Mansson added a tied-for-17th finish, but she was the only other Orange and White player to crack the top 40, as Tennessee landed at a disappointing ninth. The freshman phenom continued her hot streak at the NCAA East Regional in Greenville, N.C. in May, as the Lady Vols bounced back from their lackluster conference competition in a big way by placing second to vault to the NCAA Championships. UT opened the tournament red hot, firing a 5-under 283 and a 1-under 287 to set the Tennessee 36-hole scoring record (6-under 570). The Big Orange added a third-round tally of 8-over 296 for an 866 (+2) total, the third–lowest score in Lady Vol history. Tennessee ended up finishing just two strokes behind regional champion South Carolina. Popson led a trio of Lady Vols in the top-10, as she tied for fourth at 3-under 213. Cantú finished two strokes behind her rookie teammate in a tie for seventh, while Mansson carded an even-par 216 and tied for ninth. Monberg (t40th) and Spurlock (t95th) rounded out the Lady Vol lineup headed to the NCAA Championships for the sixth time in seven years. At the national tournament, Popson again led the way, tying for 18th and ending the season without shooting over 73 her final 10 rounds. She totaled 7273-72-73=290 (+2) at the Country Club of Landfall course in Wilmington, N.C. Mansson had a disappointing finish – tied for 67th, but recorded a 1-under 71 on the final day which enabled her to break the UT records for rounds of par or under and season stroke average. Cantú wrapped up her collegiate career by tying for 86th, while Monberg tied for 99th at her NCAA

debut. Spurlock rounded out the Big Orange competitors, taking 123rd at her second straight NCAA Championships. After the final round of the national championship competition, the Lady Vols joined the other 23 teams for a banquet where the NGCA’s season-ending awards were announced. There, the rest of the top teams in the country got to take a closer look at Mansson and Pavon – two major components to UT’s success the past two years. Mansson was honored with a second-team All-America selection, while Pavon was announced as the incoming NGCA President for the next two years. Tennessee ended the year with recognition for its top player and head coach after just battling for the NCAA title – a fitting end to another successful Orange and White season.

For the final day of the 2000 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships, the Lady Vols brought out the orange shorts and made their presence known on the golf course in more ways than one. Tennessee combined for a final round 301 to claim fifth place and the program’s best-ever performance at the national tournament. UT fired the second-lowest round of the day, as the team trekked through cold, rainy and windy conditions. The Lady Vols totaled 1206 (301-298-306-301=1206) for the four rounds on the par 72, 6,502-yard Crosswater Course in Sunriver, Ore. UT ended as the top team from the East Region and the top school from the Southeastern Conference, closing out the 1999-2000 campaign on a high note. Freshman Erin Simmons carded a one-over 73 to finish tied for 68th place, shooting 309 for the 72 holes. Young-A Yang turned in a three-over 75 in the final round to earn a spot among the top 10 at the tournament. She shared the No. 10 slot with two other individuals (76-71-75-75=297), the second-best showing by a Lady Vol in NCAA Championships history. Tina Schneeberger also pushed through on the final day, carding a 77 to finish among the top 20, ending tied for 18th place (72-74-76-77=299). Senior Stacey Bergman finished strong in her final collegiate tournament. She carded a four-over 76 on the last day to finish tied for 81st (76-78-82-76=312). Freshman Rosanna Zernatto rounded out the Lady Vol lineup, closing out her first trip to NCAAs tied for 77th place (77-75-78-81=311).

LADY VOL FACILITIES The University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf team is fortunate to have membership privileges at three of the top country clubs in Knoxville. Holston Hills is rated as the fifth-best course in the state by Golf Digest, Cherokee is considered the most prestigious club in Knoxville, and Gettysvue offers one of the most challenging courses most golfers will ever face. In addition, the Lady Vols have their choice of nine other facilities all within just an hour of campus. Tennessee will host the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships at Holston Hills Country Club.
Holston Hills Country Club
Located just east of campus on the banks of the Holston River, Holston Hills is the fifth-ranked course in the state of Tennessee. It is a long course with thick Bermuda rough and fast, tricky bent grass greens. Designed in 1927 by legendary Scottish designer Donald Ross, it has a long history of hosting prestigious events, including the men’s NCAA Championships (twice), the U.S. Open, USGA women’s mid amateur and the UT men’s golf Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions. History of Lady Vol Athletics Though female athletes have competed at UT since 1903, they have been managed by a separate administration only since 1976. For over 30 years, athletics for women at Tennessee have enjoyed an enormous amount of growth and success. The department has been a model for other women’s programs across the country because of its competitive teams, outstanding facilities, quality staff members and excellent graduation rates among student-athletes. Intercollegiate athletics for women at the University of Tennessee officially began during the 1976-77 academic year. The UT women’s department had nine intercollegiate sports at that time, including basketball, cross country, field hockey, gymnastics, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. In the inaugural year, the staff numbered 17 and a budget of $120,000 serviced approximately 75 athletes. Despite the fact that field hockey and gymnastics are no longer a part of the department, growth in staff, budget and sports continually increased through the 1970s and into the 21st century. Under current athletics director Joan Cronan, nearly 115 staff members are on hand to support 227 studentathletes. Cronan directs a department that posts an operating budget of nearly $16.5 million.
With the passage of the Restoration Act of 1988, the original mandates of Title IX were met at Tennessee with the annexation of four sports. Golf was the first added to UT’s plate in 1992. Rowing and softball joined the family during the 1995-96 season, and soccer, the 11th women’s intercollegiate sport at Tennessee, began play in the fall of 1996. The 2009-10 academic and athletic campaigns for the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers culminated with 127 student-athletes earning academic honors (an amazing 56 percent) while the Orange and White teams placed third in the Southeastern Conference AllSports Trophy standings. In the field of competition, the overall winning percentage for all Lady Vol teams during the 2009-10 season was a stellar 70.3 percent. A total of 11 Tennessee student-athletes earned All-America citations. UT claimed the SEC regular season and tournament championships in basketball. The softball team finished third at the Women’s College World Series, missing the Championship series by one game. Phoebe Wright captured NCAA titles in the indoor and outdoor 800m and was a member of the NCAA Indoor DMR championship squad. The doubles team of Caitlin Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota reached the finals of the NCAA Tournament in tennis, while the 200y medley relay squad of Jenny Connolly, Alex Barsanti, Kelsey Floyd and Michelle King finished runner-up at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Women’s Athletics Director Triumphant collegiate programs are able to distinguish themselves from their counterparts because of superiority on the field of competition and within the classroom. Under the vision and direction of Women’s Athletics Director Joan Cronan, a heavily-requested speaker on leadership and motivation on the national and local levels, the University of Tennessee Lady Vols have garnered a reputation as one of the most visible and respected programs throughout the nation. UT’s success in both the athletic and academic realms speaks volumes to her decision-making and leadership ability, as demonstrated by her peers at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) as they named her as president of their organization for 2008-09. Cronan is also a former president of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA). Both organizations have also honored Cronan as well. She was selected by NACWAA to receive their 2005 Athletic Director of the Year award. In 2004, Cronan was honored by NACDA with their Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year award. Women of Achievement Award: “Women Who Make a Difference” by the International Women’s Forum. Now entering her 28th year at Tennessee, Cronan’s continued admiration by her peers and the community is well deserved because of her efforts in facilitating the operation of a first-class program, which has finished in the top two in the Southeastern Conference Women’s All-Sports Award from The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group for five of the past six years, including three first-place finishes. In three of the past five years, all 11 Lady Vol teams participated in postseason play. The UT women’s athletics department achieved a seventh place finish in the 2007 Director’s Cup – Tennessee’s highest finish ever. She strives not only to keep UT as one of the premier women’s athletics departments in the nation but also to improve women’s athletics on a local, regional and national level. Cronan joined UT from the College of Charleston in South Carolina, where she served as the athletics director for 10 years and was later inducted into that institution’s hall of fame. Under Cronan, the school was selected as the No. 1 women’s athletics program in the country in 1980 by the American Women’s Sports Foundation. Closer to home, Cronan is a past president of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, is active on the boards of First Tennessee Bank and the YMCA, and has served as vice chair of the Leadership Knoxville board. She also works closely with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action, having served as a board member for the local FCA chapter and as a national trustee. In 2003, Cronan was inducted into the FCA Hall of Champions. Additionally, she finds time to be a deacon at Central Baptist Church-Bearden. In 1998, Cronan’s work earned her accord from the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame, as she was named its Administrator of the Year. Other honors include chairing the 1991 Knoxville area United Way Fund Drive, serving as president of the Executive Women’s Association, receiving the 1994 Toastmaster’s International Communication and Leadership Award and earning the 1994 AOPi Citizen of the Year Award. In March of 1987, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association honored her hard work, dedication and success by presenting her with its leadership award. She also won the 1995 regional award for the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators. Cronan has served on the NCAA’s Executive Committee, Management Council, as well as the NCAA’s Council, and is a member of the NCAA Championship Cabinet. She also has been a member of

Tennessee Traditions NICKNAME The formation of the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department for the 1976-77 academic year prompted much discussion concerning a proper nickname for the distaff athletes. After long consideration and debate, it was decided the female student-athletes would be known as “Lady Volunteers” or “Lady Vols.” The University of Tennessee, as the state’s land grant university, draws the nickname of its athletic teams (Volunteers) from the name most associated with the state. Tennessee acquired the name “The Volunteer State” in the early days of the 19th Century when General Andrew Jackson mustered large armies from his home state to fight the Indians and later the British at the Battle of New Orleans. The name became even more prominent in the Mexican War when Governor Aaron V. Brown issued a call for 2,800 men to battle Santa Anna, and some 30,000 volunteered. The name “Volunteers” or “Lady Volunteers” is frequently shortened to “Vols” or “Lady Vols” for the men’s and women’s athletic teams.
THE Volunteer Statue The spirit of university youth and its ideal of service, the statue was cast, placed in Circle Park and unveiled on April, 19, 1968.
Rocky Top
MASCOT The official mascot is Smokey, a rather pleasant blue tick coon hound that has been on the job since 1953. The dog is a native breed of Tennessee and is in a line of canines used for hunting raccoons. The present Smokey, the ninth in a line of such dogs provided by the family of the late Rev. W.C. Brooks of Knoxville, is appropriately called Smokey IX. Smokey was chosen as a result of the 1953 Pep Club contest to select a mascot. At Lady Vol events, a human version of Smokey accompanies the cheerleaders.
Wish that I was on ol’ ROCKY TOP, Down in the Tennessee hills; Ain’t no smoggy smoke on ROCKY TOP, Ain’t no telephone bills. Once I had a girl on ROCKY TOP, Half bear, other half cat; Wild as mink, but sweet as soda pop, I still dream about that.
[CHORUS] ROCKY TOP, you’ll always be Home sweet home to me; Good ol’ ROCKY TOP-ROCKY TOP Tennessee.
Once two strangers climbed ol’ ROCKY TOP Looking for a moonshine still; Strangers ain’t come down from ROCKY TOP, Reckon they never will. Corn won’t grow at all on ROCKY TOP, Dirt’s too rocky by far; That’s why all the folks on ROCKY TOP Get their corn from a jar.

CHEERLEADERS Tennessee is one of a handful of women’s athletics programs that sponsors its own varsity cheerleading squad complete with full grant-inaid. The Lady Vol cheerleaders and mascot Smokey are chosen from a large try-out group in the spring. SCHOOL COLORS The colors Orange and White were selected by Charles Moore, a member of the first football team in 1891, and were later approved by a vote of the student body. The colors were those of the common American daisy which grew in profusion on “The Hill.” SPORTSMANSHIP Good sportsmanship is a necessary ingredient for wholesome athletic competition. The University of Tennessee cherishes the reputation its fans, students and athletes have earned for sportsmanship and for extending hospitality to our visitors. The Athletics Department urges Lady Vols fans to conduct themselves in such a way that will enhance the University’s reputation for providing a cordial atmosphere at sporting events.
The Endowments
the rock Unearthed in the 1960s, “The Rock” soon thereafter became a “canvas” for student messages. For years the university sandblasted away the messages but eventually deferred to students’ public artistic endeavors at the corner of Volunteer Blvd. and Pat Head Summitt Street. ROCKY TOP Over 40 years ago, a husband-wife song writing team, Boudleaux and Felice Bryant from Gatlinburg, Tenn., penned the song “Rocky Top.” Since that time, the tune has emerged as the unofficial fight song for UT athletic teams.

2009 MERCEDES-BENZ 2009 MERCEDES-BENZ WOMEN’S COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS The Tennessee women’s golf team made it a clean sweep at Fox Den Country Club from Oct. 16-18. The Lady Vols captured the 2009 Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships team title by 19 strokes, and sophomore Nathalie Mansson took home medalist honors by winning a five-hole playoff over Louisville’s Laura Anderson. Tennessee’s winning margin was the highest ever in the 13-year history of their home tournament, as the host ignored cold, windy and rainy conditions over three days and dominated the 18-team field from the start by building a 13-shot lead after the first round and finishing with a 283-291-294=868 (+4) total. “It feels fantastic to win the Mercedes-Benz Championships,” Lady Vol head coach Judi Pavon said after the win. “We had the lead coming into the final day, which was great, but in college golf with four scores counting it can turn very quickly. It wasn’t until about three holes left that I felt we had finally separated ourselves and had it wrapped up. I’m really proud of them. It’s really hard to play with a lead, and for each one of them to stay focused was awesome.” Louisville finished second (887), while South Carolina (889) was third. Kent State (897) and Wake Forest (899) rounded out the top five. The team victory was Tennessee’s first tournament title since the 2006 Mercedes-Benz Championships and the Orange and White’s 19th win overall. UT’s team total (868) was its fourth-lowest ever. Mansson and Anderson each shot final day 71s to tie at 2-under 213 for the three-day tourney. On the fifth hole of the playoff, which saw the players alternating play on No. 10 and No. 18, Mansson knocked in her second putt to make par on No. 10 and clinch the first victory of her career. “I’m really proud of Nathalie,” Pavon said. “She is a fierce competitor and hates to lose. I’m happy she was able to stay patient in the playoff. It got to the point where somebody was going to have to make a mistake, and luckily it wasn’t her.”
During the final round, the Stockholm, Sweden, native made birdie on holes 16 and 17 before bogeying No. 18 to force the playoff. She shook off the bogey to outlast Anderson and the rest of the 96-person field. Mansson’s win is UT’s 16th individual championship all-time. “I kept my focus and stayed patient with it being such a long day,” Mansson said. “I just focused on one shot at a time. It feels really good - especially because it’s my first one. It’s great we won as a team, too. We have really worked hard for this. We figured we were due to win a tournament sometime soon and decided it might as well be this weekend.” UT placed all four of its scores in the top 15, as senior Ginny Brown turned in career bests for her finish (third) and score (1-under 215). Senior Diana Cantú tied for eighth (3-over 219), while freshman Sara Monberg finished in a tied for 13th (6-over 22) to round out the scoring for the Big Orange.

2009 MERCEDES-BENZ
In 1997, a new tradition began in the collegiate women’s golf world: the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships. Established by the Tennessee Women’s Athletics Department with the support of MercedesBenz of North America, top-notch women’s golf made a home in Knoxville. The annual fall tournament showcases premier women’s golf programs from across the nation. More than half of the teams competing were ranked among the top-25 squads in the country in the first eight editions of the event. Each year, records are set, marking a standard for excellence in the following years. The tournament returned to Fox Den Country Club in 2008-09 after serving as the host in 2003. The Mercedes-Benz relocates to Holston Hills in 2010 and features a highly competitive 15-team field, including seven teams that competed at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
